I agree . Low socioeconomic status seems to be underlying factor. Nobody will dare try to take advantage of you when they know your parents are neither poor nor ignorant. |
Family › What Are The PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS To Ending Child Abuse In Nigeria? by Chinwem(op): 1:22pm On Dec 27, 2015 |
This is not a thread to share gory details or examples of child abuse or abusers.
What we need are practical solutions to ending it in Nigerian society.
I was in Nigeria briefly and I had to go knock on somebodys gate and enter the compound before someone's child is killed.I understand the guardians pay for education and all for this girl but why they are so harsh with Her is unjustifiable. I needed to make sure they know that somebody has their eye on them and if anything happens to that child they will answer for it.
The thing is these 'looked like' distinguished people who I am sure will not be too proud of themselves if this is made public or brought to attention of colleagues in workplace. That's one way to know that what you're doing is wrong- if your colleagues in the office find out will you hold your head high or hang it in shame?
I plan to make regular visits as I am able and took some phone numbers as well. The little girl communicates with me via email so I have a direct link with her if she needs anything from me.The aim was not to go in guns blazing and passing judgement but to try and reason with them small if that is at all possible. They just have to get used to the fact that I m in the little girls life now and I m not going anywhere.
Looking back now having grown up and realised what safeguarding children is all about, there were numerous cases of abused children that I saw while growing up but didn't even realise it. That child always in torn clothes at school or with sores on their body. That child who is just skin and bones and always hungry . That child that has zero self esteem because they be been shouted and talked down at.
You guys, if you have a neighbour that's always beating or abusing a child especially when the child isn't theirs, please don't turn a blind eye. Invite yourself over and ask to see the child: make sure they know that the child is your priority. Give the child food when they re not around or money for food.
If you take an abused child out of an abusive home, where can you put them? Is there any law to back up ones action? What are the agencies/ NGOs in Nigeria for abused children?
Sensible responses please. |

eyinjuege: I seem to agree with your comment.
There really is a policy on ground that emergency cases are treated as such, and at least basic treatments should be started in a public institution.
Op, don't you guys have an emergency tray in your A&E? Wasn't your pharmacy open?
You failed in your primary responsibility in the care of your patient, and that supposed boss you called on phone will conveniently deny that your conversation ever occured.
In short, you should be given some extension in your A&E posting, in order to learn the basic mgt of trauma patients- A/B/C.
So you just folded your arms and was a spectator like the other market women and passersby who were responsible enough to bring the accident victims to the hospital.
Common IV canula you could not set in place. You could not ask the nurses to apply firm dressings even if you dont know how to secure hemostasis?
Like seriously? Even if those patients already had a poor prognosis and would still have died despite having all the necessary things on ground, you would have known you tried your minimum best, and not just watched them die doing nothing... Thank you my brother Responses like this give me hope for Nigeria So there are still people out there like you? |

cramjones: You still don't get it...do you? Why did he make the call in the first place? Is that what a first-on-call suppose to do on sighting accident victims. What happened to the ABCD of resuscitation? What happened to being the first on call? How did he know his limit when he did not even set a simple line? Even if he was referring shouldn't the patients at least have a line for IV access? Are you really defending this profoundly dumb and criminal action by the OP? Are you really that stuupid?
-CramJones Thank you Sir I have hope for Nigeria if I can find more like you If there's a critical mass of doctors who do what they re supposed to change will come |

As 'bitter' as you claim your experience as a doctor was today, It's nowhere near as bitter as the young lady who lost her life or the young man robbed of his fiancé under your watch |

wunmi590: And everyday some people keep shouting, Nigeria will get there, when is it with this sane attitude?
I shake my head for the new generation of this country.
You can imagine where a senior doctor for that matter is saying money first before life.
@OP you have done your best God gives live and take it, you shall be rewarded by God with the little time you spent in trying to proffer solution.
RIP to the dead Really? |

LadyFiona: You called exchange blood transfusion simple thing and photo therapy even.?? In Nigeria, the attitude of the health workers is directly proportional to the environment the person grew up in, trained, work and also the equipment and renumeration/incentives accrued from the job.
The person you quoted isn't bragging but stating a fact. I am also stating a fact What does ECMO and level 3 NICU have to do with it Provide good service with the things that are more readily available By the way there is no excuse for a poor attitude Once you sign that job offer and show up at work in that white coat or dress You better deliver Telling me about attitude being proportional to upbringing and equipment available ........smh Too many people in the wrong profession |

josite: I stopped reading your story where u said he was in distress but Hus condition doesn't seems life threatening. so the fact that he is in distress is not good enough to warrant immediate attention. your case is lost.you are one of them nurses. Gbam. For every life that is lost all you get are excuses. If you work in a place that is unsafe /under equipped/understaffed and you don't raise it with management or strike for better conditions (Yes strike for better conditions and NOT just for your pay) You are putting the patients lives in danger and your license in jeopardy If patients do not reject bad healthcare and DEMAND to be treated as human beings then the status quo remains Patients need to name and shame whoever is not up to scratch Nurses, your patients are under your care Your job is to protect them and not make things worse I appreciate some of you do a good job I see and hear of many who do not The solution is not necessarily PLAB/IELTS or whatever professional exam you write to go abroad Because if you travel with that shitty attitude and lack of concern for the patient they will roast you, trust me You will appear on daily mail front page Hospitals that cannot stabilize an accident victim so that he/she can be transferred to a better centre should be renamed clinics Stop deceiving yourselves and wasting people's time For me it's the attitude , government is not going to come and change attitudes, they can invest in the health sector , assign particular hospitals and equip them to handle accident cases, dedicate a fund for specifically for that but if the attitude is awful, people will die needless and painful deaths. |
Health › Re: Unfortunate Deaths In Our Hospitals; A Nurse's Perspective by Chinwem(f): 10:24am On Nov 07, 2015 |
helpee: so sorry for your loss but that doesnt mean the hospital is to blame. look, the mere fact they knew your baby had jaundice doesnt mean they must be able to save your baby unless you tell us what they were supposed to do that they didnt do. it may interest you to know that we dont have any level 3 NICU in nigeria where we can take care of extremely sick babies. no faacilities for ECMO, HFOV etc. so even if your baby is seriously sick and i know your baby needs any of these, i cant help cos we dont have such facilities. moreso, jaundice from what? is your wife O NEGATIVE? was the jauncice physiological or was it as a result of infection or even congenital problem ? i am not standing in for them but the mere fact they knew your baby had jaundice does not mean they must be able to save your baby. people still die even in the best setting despite advanced medical procedures. my intention is to set up a level 3 NICU in nigeria with facilties for ECMO but even in such centres the minimum deposit will still be like 500,000 naira only. i need close to 500milliion to set it up and to maintain is very expensive. i am presently studying neonatal medicine at cardiff and my total school fees when i finish this post graduate program will be about 15million in 2yrs. so, it will still be impossible for me to help the very sick children of poor people even after setting it up so if you bring your sick baby in emergency without deposit i wont admit you and that doesnt mean i am wicked. It's not so much about the facilities but the appalling attitude of staff and extreme lack of empathy to patients We are talking jaundice and you re mentioning ECMO ??!? Even in the UK how many ECMO centers are there? Simple things like taking a good history , keep baby under blue light/phototherapy , blood exchange As for the bolded, jaundice from what .......that's for the doctors and nurses to find out and tell us. You can study to the highest level and provide all the multi million equipment But if your attitude stinks from a mile away......you re in the wrong vocation. Medicine is not about bragging rights..... It's about human life |

omoarole: Actually, it isn't like that. But you see, it is very very irritating when people believe what they have is the only way in life. It's EXACTLY the same as religious or ethnic bias. Married people are happy, but some married people are also unhappy. Some single people are happy, but some single people are also unhappy. That is the way life is. There should be no feud. it is just irritating when some people feel they have a monopoly on happiness, and if you don't have happiness their way, you are nothing. Well said |

How can we turn things around in this country? How can we teach empathy to medical personnel?
The patient before you is somebody's mother/ brother/ wife / sister. Treat them the way you would want your own mother treated . If you claim you ve done all you can for the patient, I hope if someone does the same treatment for your mother that you will be satisfied? |
