CultureRe: Did You Hawk Anything On The Streets As A Child ? by chiogo(f): 10:22pm On Jul 10, 2009
lastpage:
@osisi
Pardon me, but l will say it depends on what you "invest" in that child, and You ain't hear nothing yet!

For example, why many of her contemporaries where busy hoping-off to parties and buying "Aso-ebi", my Mum restrained herself, so she could meet-up with the expenses of "child-training."

Buying a brand new car (by a 'honest' pry school Teacher) was like a dream, some decades ago.
After many years of musing over it, then selecting the Toyota Corolla from RT Briscoe, black color , taking three months driving lesson, my Mum finally got her "Car loan" approval in 1985 and the cash was paid into her account.
The next day, the Unilag admission letter for our first-born, the eldest, male child (crown prince, as we would say!) came-in!!
What will you do, with a choice between buying the long -sort after car or using the money to pay for your son's admission tuition, Books, "Matric-Suit", e.t.c?
Of course, money was just #3,000 and CAN'T satisfy both!

That is one of the days l would remember for life
.
Till her death, Mum never bought a car! She diverted the whole money to my brothers education!!
'Bros' bought all the books he would use from year one to final year before even starting the first lecture!

How many Mums can make such sacrifice for a child? Would "you" do that?
That is an example of where MY MUM IS NOT ONLY DIFFERENT, BUT SHE'S SPECIAL!, BEST AMONG EQUALS.!!

Its sad she's slept in the Lord now, otherwise, anyway sha,
You know what, years later when l bought my first car, it was a shiny black "American spec", V-Boot.
I took it home and called her out to see a gift l bought for her (she was a bit old and too weak to drive).
She was railing about "who is the person that used 'this black car' to block our entrance! grin). I told her "that car" is the gift am talking about and "it is you" who blocked your entrance so, no raking! shocked

Like the good Mum she is, she was dancing and hoping towards the car and in the same breath asking me: Where did you get the money to buy such a car? She would not enter the car until l showed her documents that proved that the "sale of my FBN shares and a large draw-down of savings account" paid for it.

Now, it was late, around 9pm. So l asked her to enter and sit in "owner's corner" while l drove her around the neighborhood. I reminded her that "that car" you sacrificed and invested in my senior brother's education, has come back to you, today, "sleeker and better" kiss grin
I imagined she had a good night sleep, that day!

You people are making me cry now a l am writing, but not sorrowful tears, l just miss her soo much,
She was 70yrs when she passed-on.
There are still some other things about her that if you hear it, you would know, , and agree when l say "She is the BEST, even among the best of Mothers"

I tell friends, if all Mums where like mine, there wouldn't be touts and armed robbers around.
He Motto was: Education! Education!! Education!!!

You need to know how many Masters degrees, (including an MBA), I.T Certifications, and professional "chartered-ship" grin l have today, to realize that "l drank" too much from my Mums cup!

Maybe one day, l would write a book, in her Memory, for other younger Mums to just "peep" into!

The only person, as far as l know, that did a better sacrifice and paid a bigger price than her,
was Jesus Christ, in that HE laid down his life, for another ,
am sure, if it came to that, Mum would have said "take me", in his place!

Adieu, Mummy!Even in death, Blessed are you among women.

BTW: last word: for all Nigerian women on Nairaland, "what kind of Mum are you, or will you be"? We reap, what we sow o! Nuff-said.
WOW!!! This is so touching. R.I.P to your mother. May her soul rest in perfect peace. smiley

It probably is, I dunno what shoe is in igbo. But you spelt it as 'Opkanka' at first; that was why Ify gave you that broken-down definition.

The ex-guy left the bitch chic when he heard she was dating the dead guy. According to the chic, she was only using the dead guy and wanted to prove her love for the supposedly ex-guy. . .So they arranged for the dead guy and was murdered in cold blood in the streets of London.

It was one of the many knife cases in London last year but after full investigation and enough CCTV footages, the girl was seen as the chief planner of the evil act.
Hmm, ok. Thanks.

CultureRe: Why Do Africans Like To To Imitate The Western Culture? by chiogo(f): 6:09pm On Jul 08, 2009
I totally agree with Sugabelly, Nigerians always have this delusion that they're more 'decent' compared to westerners. The truth is, they're really not. The only difference is that westerners can be 'indecent' and get away with it where as, a Nigerian/African can not due to the ridicule s(he) will receive from the society. Hence many of them tend to live false lives and hide their dirty laundries, which will still be aired sooner or later.

@poster, you did not make much sense when you say that "We never dated before, why have guys and girls begun to do that sort of thing?", what's that supposed to mean? Even in the bible, it's called 'courting'. Really don't see anything wrong with dating so long as you don't do things you're not supposed to do. Yes, Nigerians used to date even in the olden days, most of them just hid it from their parents. watch one of those 'way back' naija movies and you'll be sure to find a scene where a boy and a girl are sneaking up to meet behind a tree or in the bush.

And you bearing sweetpie23 don't seem so patriotic either. Last time I checked, pie is a western food. J/K tongue
