LOL my JeSoul, you're too funny!! LOL@ Carmelo for Bynum+Odom+Gasol. The Cavs have really lost 25 games? Na wa oo. I mean I thought Dan Gilbert done lost his mind when he said they'd win a championship before LeBron does but I didn't know LeBron's absence would affect them this much. Chai!

A-40:

I am sure you would be only satisfied if the entire all star teams where from the Celtics! Too bad all of them are Reserves lol.
This A-40 sef, hater. I don't see your Mavs on the starting teams either. That little win you guys had in Boston is giving you all this new-found confidence. grin

Funny how a poster, bashr, who claimed to have studied medicine in the states and how anyone could do medicine, hasn't replied the query on the medical school he attended. Only on nairaland. psh!

zeeko:

With this thread, i notice doctors or even medical students don't even see any need to participate in this crazy motion. They are prolly doing their shift, resting at home after a hard day's job, or don't even have time to laze around on some online forum gisting crap.

Example is the guy whose wife studied O & G in the U.S - It was her hubby that replied for her and i guess if she was to say something about what she thinks, y'all will keep shut and put your not too long I.T tails between your legs.

Doctors ve got lots on their minds and in their lives to deal with. That's why most good doctors are the quiet type. I see Nigerian programmers as very lousy and quite unreasonable.
I agree with your posts but you know the sentences in bold are just your own personal stereotypes. Maybe the doctors you've met were quiet, some can be chatty. It's actually a good skill - being able to communicate, esp. for a pediatrician, makes the kids more comfortable. I think your comment is just a typical naija mentality  tongue Being quiet has nothing to do with anything.
Politics / Re: Who Are Worse: Nigerian Citizens Or The Nigerian Government? by chiogo(f): 12:23am On Feb 02, 2011
Well, the government were once citizens too so it only makes sense that they're no different from one another. And poster, when you say "Nigerians are fuck ups", you're part of it too. #justsaying.

I think the word you're looking for here is 'ethnocentric'. What's with all this 'tribalist' nonsense? Is that even a word?
Even Nigerians using the word 'tribe' in this day and age is appalling. Only on nairaland.

Politics / Re: 79.6% Students Fails Again In Waec Exams by chiogo(f): 9:28pm On Jan 19, 2011
The whole point of HS is to prepare one for college, for those who plan on going anyway but choosing art and whatnot while in high school is not the way either. They probably think they're making students think of college more and what they plan to do with it by using this concept. Even while in college, a lot of people change their majors at least once before they discover their real interests. Why not prepare students to get into college first and then they can decide what they want to do without all the pressure.

But then considering how certain professional degrees are obtained in Nigeria, I kinda see why they use this method. For instance, a medical degree is obtained as an undergraduate degree once you get accepted into a college from HS.  You just work your butt off for 6/7 years and hope not to flunk out.
Politics / Re: 79.6% Students Fails Again In Waec Exams by chiogo(f): 8:55pm On Jan 19, 2011
I know Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English writing, Math, Foreign language are all mandatory and not dependent on what you plan to study in college be it in the art or science field. Electives could be music, mosaic, philosophy, Psych, etc. They may even be requirements in some schools. In Naija, you supposedly have to pick if you're going into Art or science in SS1 or thereabout. I don't think that prepares students for standardized tests.

Anyway, I'd like to know what classes the poster, Natasha took while in the Art department seeing as she claims it worked for her.

There's no way that bum is in college! Be surprised if he completed high school with a GED. What serious college student goes and does something so stuuupid? He def. has a lot of time on his hands hanging with fellow bums.
Politics / Re: 79.6% Students Fails Again In Waec Exams by chiogo(f): 8:32pm On Jan 19, 2011
The whole concept of art/science doesn't even make sense. Art coo, sculpture nee. They basically make you pick your career path in High school and you stick to specific classes Whatever happened to having a curriculum?

opribo:

This is a big lesson for us in Naija, imagine if this murder happened in Naija, would they ever find the killer but here we are in less than one month the killer is napped and in custody.
How is it a lesson? That a useless bum who refused to make use of the opportunities in the U.S. picks up a gun and takes away a promising young man's life? The naija police is piss-poor alright but the police here just did their job anyway. Kudos to them and all but for a developed country, the amount of crime overshadows most of the good. Something needs to be done about gun control for sure and all these trigger-happy hoodrats. It's been over a month by the way, he was shot on the 28th of November, right after Thanksgiving. angry

@topic, this is some progress at least even though it doesn't erase the damage done. But that muthachoker has to pay for his crime. I don't even consider a life imprisonment effective in this case. We all know some of these people get out later and cause more damage. If it's gonna be a life sentence, the court should declare him not qualified for bail at all. I'd prefer the electric chair though. Thank you very much.

Family / Re: My Friend Just Got Pregnant, Things Are Really Awkward Between Us And I Don't Know How To Treat Her. by chiogo(f): 10:03pm On Jan 11, 2011
This is like The Secret Life of the American Teenager. Atreides, you probably know that show. LOL. This is a serious issue though, couldn't help it. How did it happen though? Assuming she wasn't on the pill, was there condom, which ended up breaking? Or they just didn't use any form of protection? It's 2011!!

It's really a tough situation and I'm guessing she's in Nigeria too. Now this is what I'd do if I were you: tell her to woman up because let's face it, if she's keeping that baby, that's a prerequisite. She needs to tell her parents ASAP because the more she delays it, the less time she has on her hands regarding making decisions on whether or not to keep the baby. She can't hide for long anyway, it's pregnancy - she'd show sooner or later. You obviously can't do much for her besides emotional support and I don't blame you if you're not up for that either. So yeah, the first step would be communicating with her parents and if she's too cowardly to do that, let her know you'd be taking it up a notch by doing her the favor.

Politics / Re: 79.6% Students Fails Again In Waec Exams by chiogo(f): 7:01am On Jan 11, 2011
^ Did you get banned?
I really don't believe high cost correlates that much with quality education esp. if we're talking about naija. Let's face it, private schools in naija is just another way for rich kids not to face the reality of the Nigerian education system, imagine going to a fed. govt. school where you're bullied by "seniors", given bad food, etc as opposed to going to somewhere like chrisland filled with "aje-butter" kids like you, where are the bullies and daily torture, which in itself is a distraction? The same with college, I think the best schools in Naija are Public/State ones, on the University level anyway. High school is another thing entirely; in that case, Govt schools would replace "public", which are kinda in two different categories.

@chiogo: He was joking, hence the Larry Summers reference.
I'm sure he was, I'm used to SEFAGO and his ways  grin

Ibime:

@ Chiogo,

Nigerian Math is way more advanced than Yankee or Britico match.

Of course after doing Matrices and Advanced Calculus (which we did in SS1 Further Maths), why wouldn't you appreciate your American teacher more for giving you simple algebra?

Its nothing to do with Naija, its just that you are slow with figures and prefer 1+1. Hehehe.

Naija Maths is the best (after China). I can say that anywhere cos I still met my SS1 Further Maths in 2nd Year University.
Yes, definitely prefer 1+1.  grin
Nah, didn't even do up to SS1 in naija so I was definitely still dealing with basic math, which they made so complicated. There was no Algebra by itself, it was like trig/algebra/geometry combined into one. I can see why you think it's more advanced when courses that should be taught separately are merged into one. That's why the average Nigerian student learns by cramming a bunch of notes. Here, it's more broken down - geometry, algebra, adv. alg, pre-calc, calc, etc are all taught separately, works for me personally.

Doing HS math in college is normal esp. for ppl who their forte doesn't lie there, the system ensures you revise old materials because let's face it, after HS, most ppl(even ppl who are naturally good at math) usually forget those things. Besides, don't you get placed based on your proficiency level from HS? If you were made to do ALL of what you learned in HS while in college then maybe you didn't do so well in naija.
Politics / Re: 79.6% Students Fails Again In Waec Exams by chiogo(f): 2:59am On Jan 11, 2011
SEFAGO:

True. I used to get caned everyday by my math teacher just for existing. The teachers themselves dont even know what they are teaching. The US system actually is very education friendly- basically the teachers make an effort to teach you and your education is their joy. Having observed higher education in a number of countries- I would consider the handholding that goes on in US system- while detrimental to the curriculum- actually helps bring most students to some level of literacy in Math and English. In Nigeria, its sink or swim- you are either good at something or you are not.
Poor you, and you went to a top school, right? tongue I got caned for tardiness, noise-making or for not writing names of noise-makers as a class captain So stupid! All I remember my teachers doing was copying notes on the board from a book, that's not teaching. I remember getting flogged by this woman for forgetting to get the notes from her during LUNCH BREAK to copy to the class by myself. That's not even my job to begin with. Thinking of stuff like this just makes me laugh now. Guess anyone with a wicked heart qualifies for teaching.

SEFAGO:

Dont worry most girls suck at math and science. Its your gender not you.  Ask Larry Summers.
I don't think so. How sexist! In my case, it just didn't interest me, it's like I develop ADD in math class but not anymore. However, no more math for me. . .DONE!
