EPISODE 3 'Chad house boys wake up!' I heard someone shout like a mad dog from my dream, or so I thought. '5...4...3...2...1... And finally...!' I heard the same voice shout again and then, I heard the sound of a belt hit something or maybe somebody before a scream followed suite; 'Ah!'. 'Who are all this ones acting drama by this time of the morning and disturbing my beauty sleep?' I wondered as I fought the urge to open my eyes because I knew once my eyes were open, then no more sleeping for me. 'bang bang bang!' I heard someone hit a metal box so vigorously that I was sure the box would most definitely develop a scar. At this point, I had enough of the noise so with my eyes still closed and partially in my subconscious state I screamed; 'Who is that one that's making noise this early morning nah? You be winch wey no they sleep?!' and that was how I killed myself with my own mouth. 'who said that?' I heard someone ask, he got no response at first and I wondered why everywhere was suddenly as quiet as a grave yard. 'I said, who is the person that asked that question now?' He asked again but got no response. 'are you all deaf and dumb now? In fact! Last boy!' The person screamed. Before I could ponder on what he meant by 'Last boy' I heard multiple footsteps running towards the door region and at this point I was forced to open my eyes to know why they were running, let it not be that a lion is coming or something worse. I opened my eyes and stood up beside my bed and to my greatest surprise, I saw the people running lined up on a straight queue. 'What is the meaning of this?' I wondered, totally confused just like most of you reading this. 'I asked who is the bastärd that just spoke some moments ago?' The person asked the people on the queue, they looked smaller than the person talking or maybe he was just older than them, but that wasn't really my problem at the moment. My problem was that he just called me a bastärd indirectly, I didn't exactly know what a 'bastärd' meant but I knew it had something to my parents not being married or perhaps dead so I did what any ignorant, big headed, oversabi kid in my shoes would do, I tried to defend my parents; 'Am not a bastärd oh!' I screamed back at the person who just called me a bastärd. 'so you are the one who spoke now? Oya come here now!' He screamed at me. I assumed he couldn't do anything to me since I had literally done nothing wrong, or did I? So I went closer to him and then before I could blink twice he launched my soft chubby cheek with a thunderous slap and for a split second, I lost my ability to hear. 'anhan! What did I do na?!' I screamed at him hopelessly, since I couldn't return the slap, I got another slap on the other cheek as a response and this time I was smart enough to keep my silly questions to myself and simply start crying. He ignored my tears and instructed me to follow him as he led the way out of my hostel, I followed him of course, I wasn't sure if I would have been able to endure a third slap. We walked for about 5minutes and passed the front of two identical hostels which were both brown bungalows just like my hostel, Government Block, before we turned and entered the third hostel on the same row of hostel. *** It was totally different from my hostel and the other two Identical hostels as while others were bungalows, it was a two story 'high rise' building, but it was painted brown too. There was an identical building right beside side it. I later got to understand how the boys hostels are being segmented; there are actually five hostels in total, with three bungalows and two 'high rise' buildings which had three floors each. While the three bungalows are for JSS1, JSS2 and JSS3 respectively, the 'high rise' had three floors which accommodated the SS1 - SS3 students, with the SS3 staying on the ground floor, SS2 in the middle floor and SS1 on the top floor. *** As we walked into the building, we walked down a long corridor on the ground floor and just before we got to the extreme end, we turned and passed an open door, therefore entering a room painted green. 'Jerry, abeg, you fit borrow me that boy make hin rush go fetch water for me?' A rather macho dude sitting on a bed in a corner asked the person who brought me. 'no o!, me and the smallie get scores to settle first' Jerry replied. 'wetin hin do?' 'Mr macho' again I wanted to ask him to mind his business but after taking a good look at his muscles I couldn't find the courage to speak. 'imagine oh! the bastärd son call me winch because I go wake them up' Jerry replied. 'serious?' the macho dude asked as he stood up and started searching for something in his locker. 'I be like person wey dey joke?' Jerry asked. 'Ah!! Bastärd son of a thousand fathers! Lie down flat on the floor now!' Mr macho screamed at me. 'Me?' I asked. 'No, Me' He replied sarcastically. I made the worse mistake of my life when I asked; 'Why?' TO BE CONTINUED. |

'I'm definitely proud of him' my dad replied and then tapped me on the shoulder for reasons best know to him. 'Fine boy, I hope you would keep up the good job?' the dude asked me, I assumed the question was rhetorical so I just smiled in response, but within me I said; 'I hope so too o'. 'Ok, so what house do you want us to put you in?' He asked after he realised I wasn't going to reply him. 'Red house!' I replied not because of any reasonable reason but simply because of my house in primary school was 'Red', little did I know that things were a little bit different. The dude chuckled at my eager response then went ahead to explain after my dad asked him to; 'There are four houses in this school, namely, Chad, Cross, Niger and Osun, they are named after four famous water bodies, like lake chad and cross rivers, also they..' 'are they represented by different colours?' My dad cut in after staring at his wrist watch, he didn't seem to be interested in the lecture that the dude was giving us. 'Yes they are, chad house is represented by...' 'Is any of them represented by the red colour?' my dad cut in again, I began to wonder why he was in a hurry. 'Yes, I was just about to tell you that' the corper replied, and I could see that the bright smile which had been on his face was suddenly no more. 'ok so which one is red?' My dad asked, still not caring about how rude he sounded. 'Chad house' 'Good! My son said he wanted to be in red house and since red house is same thing as Chad house, put him in red house! Simple' my dad replied, fairly raising his voice. 'what's up with this change of attitude?' I wondered as I watched the nice drama going on in my presence. 'Ok, I just wanted to let him know more about the houses before making a decision' He replied and brought out a big green file, her thereafter wrote somethings on the file then handed it over to my dad and gave him some instructions. I later got to know was a 'Corper' who was doing his service in the school because of the 'NYSC' written on his shirt. NB: NYSC - National Youth Service Corps, in my opinion, it's just simply a way the government of Nigeria try to steal free labour from the highly educated citizen who are already graduates. Yes! Free! What can the #20,000 in which they pay the corpers add to thier lives? Considering the current bad economy of the nation. Anyway, lets leave that argument for another day. BACK TO MY STORY... My dad and I left the 'dude' office or should I just say 'corner' because it was actually a big hall which had several tables and chairs with many other corpers who sat on them while attending to other people who I assumed were newly admitted. My dad opened the file and there were over fifteen forms in it, which I assumed we were to fill, and I assumed right. The forms contained so many questions I deemed unnecessary and probably silly like; 'what's you mother's phone number?' 'home address of your father?' 'what is your home address?' The questions that flooded my mind as I filled the forms were, what do you people need my mummy number for? Do you want to start flashing her? If you have asked me for my daddy house address, why are you asking for mine again? Whereelse do you expect me to be living?. Dumb people, I said to myself. We finally filled the forms and then proceeded to another office in the same building but on a different floor to submit the form, my dad got further instructions from the person he submitted the form to. We walked out of the building and headed to the school park before walking towards the northern region where there was a light crowd which seemed to be increasing by the second. I didn't have any idea about what was happening but I just followed my dad like a dummy. I was instructed by my dad to sit on one of the chairs in the park before he went to join the crowd. I obeyed and few minutes later, he came out with a really tiny bed, a bucket, a 5 liters white keg and a nylon bag which I assumed contained my school wears. 'Daddy, why did you buy a new bed?' I asked ignorant of the fact that I needed something to sleep on. He just smiled and said; 'It's for you, lets try and located your hostel quickly before it start to rain, I was told its called 'Government Block'' He replied and started walking eastward, I just followed him quietly. After about 15 minutes of foolishly walking round the school all in the name of looking for 'Government Block' we finally decided to ask for directions and we found out it was just right behind us, I felt like slapping my dad for making me walk so Long whereas the building was just by the corner but I 'was' a well mannered kid.. Yes! 'Was', any questions?. Long story cut short, My dad finally left me alone in the hostel to face my fate all alone. Less I forget, my dad actually left with Bunmi's mum in his car but I don't know what happened afterwards but as I stated earlier; 'Like father, Like son' .END OF EPISODE 2. |
EPISODE 2. Bunmi wore one of those blue boot cut jeans that was in vogue then and a pink shirt, while her sister wore a black three quarter jeans and a pink top too. 'Girls and Pink sha' I mummerd under my breath. As Bunmi and her sister walked closer to my my direction, I looked up to my dad who towered me to see if he noticed what was going on but he seemed to have all his attention totally focused at the Admin Block. 'should I tap him and show him the girls that are approaching or just let time decide' while I was contemplating the girls got close enough and Bunmi spoke first; 'Michael, what are you doing here?' I wonder why Nigerians like to ask questions that the answers are highly obvious. 'Ayam a new student here' I replied unintentionally replacing the 'I am' with 'Ayam'. Am sure most of us spoke like that as kids .'Ah! Which house did they put you in?' she asked me. 'I dunno oh, ayam just coming now' I replied. 'ok, is this your daddy?' Bunmi's sister, Shola, asked me. I had already forgotten my dad was even by my side although we both faced different directions. 'Yes. daddy see my class mates, Bunmi and Shola' I replied and then tapped my dad who was staring at the Admin block with full interest asif he had a hidden agenda for it. 'Good afternoon sir' They both greeted him as he turned towards them. he smiled at them looked at his wristwatch before saying; 'the time is still 11:15am and not yet 12pm so its still morning. How do you greet someone in the morning?' 'good morning sir' They both replied in unison. Don't mind my dad, that's just how he was and probably still is, he likes to do 'Over sabi' attimes. 'Good! How are you?' He asked. 'we are fine' They both replied as if they knew what was in eachother's mind. 'who brought you people here?' 'Our mummy' 'Where is she?' 'see her' Shola who was the older one, probably with just some months difference pointed at a woman who ironically enough, was staring at the Admin block just like my dad earlier did. 'Is there something in this building that only adults can see?' I wondered. 'Ok, lets go and talk to her' My dad replied and followed suite as the girls led the way. The girls mum looked extraordinarily beautiful and rather too young to have given birth to kids who were roughly within the ages of 9, 10 and 11, she looked like someone in her late twenties or perhaps early thirties. And unless she gave birth to her first kid around 20, then maybe she wasn't Bunmi and Shola's biological mum, but that's not really the topic of the day so back to my story. 'hello!' My dad said to the lady with an extra wide grin on his face, I didn't understand why he shined his 32 teeth so widely then but I guess I do now. Men would always be men*winks*. 'Hi, good afternoon' she replied and gave him a warm smile. I expected him to give her the 'it's not yet 12pm lecture' but he strangely skipped the lecture and gave a replied that wasn't expected; 'Good afternoon, how are you?' he said and the offered her his hand for a hand shake. She grabbed the hand and replied in the affirmative. He then went ahead to state his reasons of approaching her, saying somethings about am his kid and I just got admitted, that he also needs directions on what to do first since it was obvious she and her kids had passed the basic stage. She had a really tiny voice so I couldn't hear are reply, I simply turned to Bunmi and her sister then started chating with them. We said nothing worth writing, just the usual kids talk. Few minutes later I heard my dad say 'thank you' and then take his phone from her. Why he gave her his phone and what she did with it baffled me, all I can tell you guys is 'like father like son' .My dad and I then walked towards the building and entered it. *** 'Fine boy, what's your name?' A fairly young dude who wore a white T-shirt with 'NYSC' written on it asked me. 'Michael Odoh' I replied smartly. 'how old are you?' 'Am 9 years old sir' I replied, intentionally adding the 'sir' inother to sound really polite. 'hmm, is that his real age sir?' He asked my dad who was just staring at the interogator. 'Yes, he would be ten years old by October, any problem?' My dad asked with a rather curious tone. 'no, not atall, just that he is quite young. Most of his class mates are already 10, 11 or maybe more' 'yes, you are right, thanks to his mother who insisted he started schooling early and his sharp brain which earned him a double promotion in his primary school' My dad replied proudly and Ironically, I could see his head was already swelling instead of mine. Truth be told, I was a pretty intelligent kid in primary school, I wonder what happened to that part of my brain , all that is in it now is how to... (fill in the blank space with what ever you feel is suitable) .'interesting, you should be proud of your son then' The dude replied totally ignorant of the proud tone my dad used earlier.... |

EPISODE 1. My story actually starts from the first day I stepped into F.G.C odogbolu, or better still known as FEDGO. It was a sunny Thursday and that was kindof weird because rain had been falling consistently for over a week. I woke up that morning feeling so anxious & happy. Unlike the usual 'Me' who wakes up by 9am daily and still wants to sleep more, I looked at the wall clock and saw the time was barely 5am. The reason was probably because of the anxiety of how school life would be like. I had high hopes of it being fun since staying at home wasn't that fun anymore because all my siblings were already at different boarding schools all over Nigeria. My dad is one of those people who believe in the famous saying which states; 'school life is the best life' so he made it one of his major priority that all his children went to a boarding school, and frankly speakin, we all did, determined father right? Anyway, I immediately went to kitchen to put a kettle of water on the fire for it to boil since I wasn't a fan of the early morning cold water, little did I know that nobody would boil the water in school. I was done bathing before my dad finally decided to wake up. He came to my room probably with the intent of waking me up only to see me awake and even ready for the long day ahead. 'Good morning dad' I greeted him. 'morning, how are you?' 'I'm fine, thank you' I replied in an unusual polite manner. 'so are you ready?' He asked the obvious question. I wanted to reply sarcastically and say something like 'No o, I just like to bath as early as 5am then lay on my bed after wearing my best t-shirt' but my brain told me I would have to relocate to a 'cozy' spot under any nearby bridge if I dare said that. My lips slowly curved into a smile as I replied him; 'yes, am ready' 'hmm, ok, give me a few minutes to go and prepare too so we can get going' He replied and left my room with a mysterious smile planted on his face which I couldn't really understand until later on in the day. True to his word, few minutes later we were both heading to the car after I said goodbye to my mum who was still in dreamland. *** 'Are we there yet?' I asked my dad as I opened my eyes and the environment we were in wasn't familiar in anyway. 'we are almost there, the school gate is right after that turn' He replied pointing to a sharp turn some metres away. This response was rather unexpected because I had plans of staying awake all through the journey but the last thing I remembered was admiring the magnificent skyscrapers that lined up side by side somewhere in the Lagos Island as we drove pass them, and all of a sudden we had arrived at our destination. Nevertheless, I became really excited and the last thing that I could possibly do was sleep again. *** The school gate was not as big as I expected, it was just of average size and was painted light green and white, there was a huge signboard by the side of the gate which had 'WELCOME TO FEDERAL GOVERNMENT COLLEGE, ODOGBOLU' boldly written on it. My dad punched the car horn and the security officer came over to attend to us. He looked so skinny, lanky and old , I could only imagine why the windy rain of Ogun state hasn't him away. 'papa ékàróó' My dad greeted the security man as he leaned on the car. NB: Ekàróó is the yoruba language translation of Good Morning. 'ekàróó oh' He replied. 'papa! My pikin just get admission for here, I say make we come do register am make him resume today' My dad spoke pigin English in a way that sounded really funny and weird probably because he doesn't speak it often. 'Ok, na new student?' the man asked again. 'yes' my dad replied. 'Ok, you go go the admin block and them go tell you wetin to do again for there' He replied and wanted to go go and open the gate for my dad to drive through but my dad called him back to ask for directions to the 'admin block' 'Shey na so the school big wey them need directions to on top motor again?' I wondered. NB: Admin block - Administration Block, it can be likened to the 'power house' of the school. My dad was directed and we zoomed pass the gate. After getting more directions from a couple of students who wore white shirts and green trousers, we finally got to the admin block. The building was a two story building painted white and green, I began to wonder why almost everything in the school was green & white As I and my dad stood still, probably trying to scan the building before proceeding, my eyes caught the glimpse of a someone familiar. 'is that Bunmi from my primary school?' I wondered as I strained my eyes to get a clearer view of the person. Talking about the devil, it was Bunmi and she turned towards my direction at that moment, I could see her eyes suddenly brighten, she tapped her sister who was by her side and pointed at me, they both stood up and started walking towards me. I was still a kid so I wasn't bothered about my dad presence, but... TO BE CONTINUED™ |
