As per harvest,
I am fortunate to have a 4kw PV array being controlled by a classic 150 mppt device. My battery bank is 48v 450ah Trojans. My inverter is also a 4kw Mustpower Inverter charger. From lessons learnt from seniors, I had to add 2 MNSPD for extra protection against surges, ligthnenng etc.
I have been living off grid for almost 6 months now.
My harvest has between 10kwh and 16kwh daily.
By 6am my battery voltage is usually not less than 49v except for few instances where I recorded 48.5v.
Even though I recently observed some slacks in 2 of my Trojans (bought June 2014) but the overall performance is still like new. I observed that each time I drain the battery bank below 47V, those 2 batts will drop to 3.8v while others remain at 5.9v. Since I observed this I have always avoided deep discharge though once in a while I have to. But I can comfortable discharge my battery to 47v without any worries. The problem starts when I go deeper than 47v which should be totally avoided.
So I plan to remove the the 2 batteries over time but replacement is not an option for now due to unavailability of the batts nationwide. (interested seller can pm me if you have 2 spare T105 Trojan for sale).
Saipro was kind enough to share a solution to me(not battery repairs) I am yet to implement his ideas but I am sure it's going to work since he uses d same.
Owning the classic mppt was one of the best decision I have taken thanks to Saipro.

For those who think most of us are not sharing enough about our set up, kindly direct specific questions to individuals, others can contribute too.
Fortunately for some of us here we have taken our relationship in this forum beyond nairaland. Nothing stops you from being more diplomatic in asking for help, trust me many will be willing to help.
Do you equalize? I had the same experience and after a series of equalization routines they stopped. Turn the inverter off and let your midnight classic equalize at 62 for 1 hour. Repeat every thirty days.
Also move the batteries around or change your connections. I do mine once a year. I run my strings through a bus bar and I have had better results since.

You 'll need two solar panels of 300 watts each, a 2.5kva 24v inverter, four 200ah 12v batteries. Note that the system will last for 3 to 4 hours on full load when there is no sunshine or utility grid.
For more information, reach me on 07037819785, esimikeolise@yahoo.com.
I am sure you asked him how many hours a day he intends to power each item. And you calculated that the 600 watts in panels will take how many hours to charge 400 Ah in batteries?
And what formula did you use to get your 3 to 4 hours?

Poor quality products don't encourage patronage and that's why Nigerians cease to patronize made in Nigeria products. I can't buy something because of where it was manufactured but because of how well it was manufactured irrespective of its price because I don't want to come back soon to pay the same amount for the same product
So you prefer to buy Chinese made junk? A lot of Nigerian manufacturers make very good quality products. We have customers who insist on Nigerian made cables when we install for them. They must know something you don't. When you let price be the primary driver you will suffer the consequence of that decision by getting inferior quality offerings.

My people, I bought a 12v 100ah battery and 1000w Intelligent Inverter but I never enjoyed it.

I visited a battery charger with it, he emptied the content and tasted the electrolytes which he confirm it's dead so he changed it.

The battery worked abit but yet not to my satisfaction.

My question is there a composition of the content of the electrolytes, how thick it will be etc. Please.
He tasted the electrolyte and poured it out. So he has a hydrometer in his mouth abi. Why did he empty the content?

1. What type of battery did you buy? Is it a deep cycle battery or a car battery.
2. What are you charging it with and for how long?
3. As it is a flooded battery. What is the maximum voltage your charge your battery to.
4. Have you tried an equalization charger.

It would not hurt if you took time to Google what batteries should do before you take them to a quack.

Please house, I live offgrid and recently upgraded my 24v setup to a 48v system (since I had 12 units of 100ah batteries sitting on corner), Now I have a setup of 48v 300ah (2 parallel connections). The batteries are fully charged before 12 to 1pm daily depending on sunlight available and batteries are hardly drained to 80% daily. Most times, the next day, I do have my batteries at 85 to 90% remaining. My bank is highly oversized considering the fact that it powers very little load .

My question, will the batteries still degrade quickly even as they are mostly on float always?

Are there any advantages or disadvantages of this setup cos am being advised by friends that the batteries are too much.

I will appreciate all input from the house.
Your set up is ideal. Once every blue moon do a deep discharge for maintenance. I dream to be where you are some day

Hi all, I have a question.

Electricity from solar seems pretty inefficient to me. Panels supply DC, inverter converts To AC and excess to DC. When panels are not supplying power, inverter converts DC back to AC.

If I want to use only DC gadgets in my house or a hybrid where all my lights are to be fed by DC with dedicated points for any battery charging also fed by DC, pumping machine fed by DC then the rest of the house fed by AC, what options do I have?
If you can afford the cost of the items you list, it is actually more efficient to go that route.
All you will need are your panels, a charge controller with a DC load option and batteries. There is no need for an inverter.

I'm writing this thread seated at the back of a Hilux truck just outside our apartment. Yaa, that me in the picture. You

While playing game, she walked into the seating room and demanded for my router. Mine, not hers. With her tone and facial expression demanding the router, I didn't respond because there was an indication that she was warming up for a quarrel. I wasn't just in the mood. The thing is, she is very skilled in extending her anger phases. That is one thing I can't understand till today. Believe me, it was not like this while we were dating. Sorry, I forgot to tell you I married my university girlfriend, she years my junior and the same department. Ya, I'm one of those guys that dated and planned for the future with their girls at the same time. God blessed that plan but at this point I don't understand everything that has been happening for the past one year plus since we got married. She repeatedly demanded that I handed over my router to her but I was quiet. Meanwhile, it occurred to me that I forgot the router in my office the minute she first asked about it. Truth is, I actually needed to use the internet that night for my online FIFA.

After several times of asking for the router and no response from me, she took the TV remote and switched off the TV. She walked straight to the kitchen and hid the remote. I approached her in the kitchen and told her I was not ready for any kinda quarrel. We have had enough for the past one year of getting married. I then told her I forgot the router in my office, I didn't have it. I guess she didn't believe me, she never did. She told me to leave her alone. I returned back to the seating room with my heart beating fast. I knew she wanted a serious quarrel that night. After some minutes, I returned to the kitchen and requested for the remote. Then I figured out she hid it in her pant. Pretending I was passing by, I swiftly went for the remote from under her short gown and grabbed it.

I watched her hide the console in her pant yet again. I shuddered in obvious fear because I knew what the woman wanted, a fight. Unable to deal with it,the intimidation and the shame, I went for the console

I managed to play a few games which I lost mostly and then slept off around past 5am this morning. Around 3pm, I woke up and went to the office. Not like I had work but I needed to clear my head away from the house. If only there was alcohol in Saudi, I would have been somewhere in a hotel drinking away the shame. When I returned home by past 7pm, hungry and tired. I needed to continue my game but I could no longer find the game console and the TV remote. I asked for it and she ignored me. I managed to eat and then left the house to this truck.

I want to send her back to Nigeria in few days time and I hope I'm not making a mistake!!! Spitting on my face, nah nah....am so fed up!!!!
You ignored the message she was sending. Obviously you are not giving her the attention she deserves. Does she have friends? Does she have an outlet? You work, you come home watch TV or play games. When do you make time to talk to her or show her affection.
She hid the remote in her undies. You went in there and all you took was the remote. I am sure she was in the mood and you had ignored all the cues you had been sent.
Take your wife out on a date bring her home and make love to her

Yes, on a smaller scale on the AC load side. (Though, according to SMA you can build up to 12 x 3 Sunny Island 8 = 36 in a cluster, up to 300 kW. That would be a nice project!)

100 MW solar plant (upstream) will fail.
(Or you use large battery storage? Is it then economically viable?)
Battery based systems are limited to about 5 MW. (not 100% on that). Someone claims he is doing a 10 MW battery based and the comment was met with derision.
100 MW will not fail. There are solution the world over that exceed the 100 MW. Ivanpah is a concentrated solar solution. Those will work in our environment

Good point @Chris81964!

@BlackBaron

In case you are not familiar, in Europe it is required that an on-grid inverter only works when there's light.
I.e. the on-grid inverter "listens" to the grid, the grid is like a "heartbeat" and if voltage and frequency of the grid are within given thresholds (depends on country), then the on-grid inverter will start to operate and "sends" the energy to the grid and to the loads in the house. It is a safety measurement.
(Of course, there are inverters that provide the "heartbeat" as well, so that you can connect an on-grid inverter. Normally you find those type of inverters in the US ...rather small scale for homeowners ... just saying to complete the picture.)

(By the way, sometimes I smile when I read that big investors plan to build 100 MW of solar plants/parks. Those people are financial guys, not knowing about the technical challenges, I guess?! If light is not available, the plant won't
operate... = no power = no income.)
You can do AC coupled solutions. You need a battery inverter to do the job of the grid. There are few that can do it. The three that I know that can are SMA, Schneider and Victron.
Some contributors to this forum have done AC coupled solutions.

Good day al,
Please I need some clarification and advice.
By my own calculations need 3.5kva to run all home appliances
However based on cost of setup looking at a 1kwh system to power small-mid sized freezer, a TV and lights. Cfl& leds up to 10
I intend to power only the freezer during 9am-3pm and tv+ lights during 8pm-10pm.
Generator will be on between 6-8pm for water pumping.
I am presently 100% off grid.
My situation is that even though the promotional materials I read seems to suggest 1kwh is good for a 3 bedroom 24 hours I am kind of worried may not satisfy me and i don't want to end worse off.
I have also not been able to understand or convert kva to kwh.
So will appreciate advice on if 1kwh system can work as I planned or not.
Thanks a lot.
1 Kva is 0.8kw. Take your loads multiply by the number of hours you want to run them for. Divide the result by 4 and you will have how much in watts you need in panels.
Lcd TV 8 hours. 8 x 100 w = 800 Watt hours. Divide by 4 = 200. You need 200 watts in panels to power your 100 Watt TV for 8 hours.
I hope this helps.
