Technology MarketRe: World's Smallest Power Inverter by chris81964(m): 11:18am On Jul 02, 2016
olabakefish:
I can't tell the exact mistake I made, what happened was that I saw the inverter with a guy that sells power tools like drilling machine, grinders and the rest, he only happens to have the inverter in his shop and I asked him if it works and he said it is working fine, we could not even test it that day as there was no battery in his shop since that is not what he deals on. I was desperate for that inverter because the one at home was bad, he gave me his word that I can return it if it doesn't work, I connected it to my battery of less than 6 months brand new slim Ritar 200ah and there was light all night till 6am the next morning, then I put it on blving that it must have charged very well only for it to go off in 20min. I couldn't do anything about I left till I came back from work and I was told that there was light for considerable hours so I bliv it must be charged like the new one does only for it to do same.
I called the guy he asked me to bring it on getting there I tot he will refund my money, collected it and told me tp come back some days after that he would have fixed it, I he went back on the said day he gave back to me and was requesting that I give more money and I refused collected the inverter and left. During that time I had located the service centre and fixed my new inverter that went bad that's when I noticed the battery had gone bad. I took the inverter from the guy straight to the office and connect it to the battery in the office in less than 30mins it ran down a battery dat lasts hours, that went I knew I had use my money to buy wahala. The inverter actually damaged 2 batteries, one at home another at office, the run time for the at office was seriously reduced to like 45mins after the incident. That is when I new the that the inverter was the culprit. I just dump it somewhere. I will post the picture later for you to see. The most painful part was that I had a blue gate ups at home that I could have converted in the meam time. So when I stumbled on this thread I felt like crying because the cost of the battery now is so painful. With the way things are in the era of CHANGE. So please what was my mistake...
Revisit your batteries again. Unless you have shorted cells the issue you describe defies logic. Get a good charger and run a four hour equalize charge. The batteries have to be fully charged before the equalization will start. Good luck

Okay sir. I plan on using a Fangpusun Flexmax 60A. Approximate distance between panels and controller is about 40ft from my estimation.

Batteries are 2V 500Ah Huawei Agisson setup in series for 24V.
Inverter is a 1.5KVA Safe power.

Please let me know if i missed something out.

Thanks
Good choice. The flex max can handle up to 150 volts. I would not advice that you go that high. I average between 70 and 110 volts on my installations that use the controller. No issues so far. I will run higher voltage to reduce string size. Also allows you to use smaller size pv breakers or fuses. Most panels are limited to 15 amps series connections.
The 2 V batteries are smart. Check the charge parameters for them and set them in your FM60.
Good luck.

You don't need 3.5kva for solar system to power just a fridege a d maximum load. Plan for 1.5-2kva. Solar panel of 250W*8 will cost you 520k, Charge controller@ 80k, inverter 1.5kva 50k, battery 200AH*4 @ 360k, installation 30k. This system should fix ur need wella
Here we go again. What calculations did you use to arrive at 2 kw in panels?
Did you do an actual analysis of his usage? How many Watt hours did you calculations account for?

Hello experts. I have a 1.5Kva inverter. Can I use a small freezer with input power of 122w on it? I put it on while every other thing is off and it works fine, but I am concerned it may just be wrong. I have attached the ratings of the freezer.
Your 1.5Kva is 1.2 kw. As long as it can handle the surge it would work. I don't know what else you have connected. If they are less than half the inverter capacity combined with the freezer I will leave them on.
Here is the important caveat!!!!!!!!!!!!! How much storage do you have? Are your batteries enough to manage the load?

morning. i dont understand what you mean by solar configuration but i assume you mean you will like to get a solar inverter inculcated into the system.
If so is the case, get an additional battery so you will enjoy the system well.
You will require the following
1. (4) 200w/12v solar panel
2. (1) 200ah/12v battery
3. charge controller
4. ceiling mount ( you may use clips, ties & nails if you have a steep roof)
5. s6mm cable roll
6. nails, clips
7. service fee.

Do this & you can confidently kiss nepa, phcn & generator goodbye

if u need further inquiry 08137539988

Get a quack installer & you may risk burning down your house. (warning)
How did you arrive at 800 watts in panels without knowing what he intends to power and for how long? Blows my mind each time I see stuff like this.

Great Job. Congrats.

What are the specs of the system and what are your comments on the Fangpusun inverter.
Very small system. We have the Prosine 1800 24V we have a 30 amp mppt controller and 4 130 watt panels. For batteries we used 4 100 AH 12 V AGM batteries. They are powering a small modem and router that combined use about 100 W.
If you have ever used the Prosine then you know it is an incredibly durable inverter that operates in very high temp environments like what is found in the North.
Thank you

And what do the British use on the war fronts?? Land Rovers have more off roading capabilities that any other Off Roader.
Without modifications.
The British are obligated to use home manufactured vehicles. And the Brit's are not really that formidable a fighting force. How did they di in Afghanistan. They could barely do Libya America and France had to come to the rescue If you want to use pure off roading capabilities I am not sure the Defender is a match for a G wagon. For what Dunka is looking to do there are many vehicles that meet the test and are more comfortable and reliable.
A range rover is just as capable so is an LR3 or Disco. Most jeeps will do the job. The Landcruiser in LWB and SWB form will do

Where I live they command a high resale because of their rarity. However the Australians swear by the Landcruiser. They say if you see a person under a Landrover it is a mechanic. If you see a person under a Landcruiser he has been run over.
When you see your rebels in the middle east or any theater of war in Africa, the vehicle of choice is a Landcruiser or a Hilux. Those folks are on to something. You almost never see a Defender.
My 2 cents

Sad or not, that is my take on things. The averge Nigerian vehicle operator or owner doesn't even bother with the basic maintenance, and when they can be bothered, they use rubbish parts, and persons not qualified to work on a wheelbarrow.

The same applies to Nigerians outside Nigeria. They destroy their cars by cutting corners with maintenance. They generally have this "manage it", driving a car with the dash all lit up, just because it still drives. I work on cars here driven by Nigerians and Caucasians, and there's a marked difference.

My comments are in context, the 20-year-old Landrover Defender is testament to that. If you put emotion aside, and put this sense of patriotism aside, you too will see exactly where I'm coming from.
No sentiments or patrotisim involved and I can't see where you are coming from.
You must hang out with some poor Nigerians.
The Nigerians I know here and in the US where I live take their cars to the dealer or a reputable mechanic. Your personal experience can't be a barometer by which you judge Nigerians or your so called caucasians.
I do work on cars as a hobby and I have a full compliment of tools , hydraulic jack and stands. However I know my limits. Major repairs go to an ASE certified shop or the dealer. I also sold cars in my past life at a Multi manufacturer dealership in Clifton NJ. I can tell you that my experience is very different from yours.
Poor people have poor habits. It does not matter what color they are.

The thread starter stressing that this Landrover Defender was previously used by a Caucasian is pretty valid.

You may not wish to hear this, but it's a fact the average Nigerian has rubbish maintenance culture. They will run a good car into the ground in less than a year. Why do you think a 2013 BMW 535D imported from Germany to Nigeria suddenly "goes wrong" less than a year later? Or the interior of a 2010 Nigerian used Toyota Corolla looks like a wild dog has been sleeping in it?

This is without even starting on the short cuts the average Nigerian vehicle owner has taken, leaving the car a ruin.

The Landrover Defender in discussion here is a 1996 model, so it's almost 21-years-old. Look at the exterior, and the interior, with its light grey cloth seats! If this truck was used by a Nigerian, the chances are you wouldn't even be able to discern what colour the seats originally were, they would be that filthy, and ripped. Bearing in mind, a Defender's main purpose is mud-plugging, where even the carpets would be shot, this one is pretty clean. A quick wash and detail, and it would look like it rolled off the production line 2 years ago.

I would rather buy a 10-year-old vehicle, with 100,000 miles which had previously been owned and used by a Caucasian, than a similar 3-year-old one with 30,000 miles that had been beat on by a Nigerian owner.
WOW. Very sad comment.A poor person white or black does not maintain their cars. The expatriates you have here are not poor. By the same token they have no real reason to go beyond basic maintenance because they will be leaving that car behind.
Put comments in proper context. Nigeria does not need external sources to put her down. We do a phenomenal job at that.

Thanks for the explanations. I get all you said but I think the one regarding battery voltage didn't address my question or thought.. Let me rephrase: Why is I that when the battery is charging, especially when the sun is out fully or when using mains to charge, the battery voltage reaches 27.4 or 27.5V but when the source is removed after charging (even when the inverter shows battery fully charged), the battery voltage drops to 25.7V?
Your battery has a float voltage which is between 26.5 and 27.5 your charge controller will maintain that float voltage and then the battery will fall back to its charged state once the charge source goes away. Float is in excess of 100% SOC.

Good morning guys. Is a 40A CC good enough for a 1000W solar panel with 24V battery backup. The calculation puts the requirement at 41.67A or do i go higher like the 45A?
More than enough. Depending on your battery type, you will see about 28 to 30 v during the charge cycle. I have 2 kw on 24 V 60 amp controller. Works fine
Science/TechnologyRe: Thread For Solar System/Electricity Owners in Nigeria. by chris81964(m): 7:10am On Jun 06, 2016
SycophanticGoat:
LoL.. Lemme help you out in a more conservative manner.. You can only address this as if tho, you're preparing for the night. Reason is, your batteries gets charged mostly during the day and even when you use power then, the panels may be sufficient to charge your batteries and still deliver your current for your load. So I will say about 15 hours is perfect for this analysis.

Multiplying the time by power, we get 1,000W * 15hours = 15,000Wh
Assuming you'll probably be having only small amounts of sunshine daily, then we can divide by 4h pa day. However, in hotter/very sunny regions, we will divide the value by 6h. So let us use 5hours: 15,000Wh ÷ 5h = 3,000W of panels (3000W is such a huge number and you'd need at least, 12-14 of 300W to give you something close to that value if you'all be using a PMW controller although not advisable to use PMW with such array) . So the idea here is, the more then number of hours you expect to use your system pa day, the higher the wattage of your solar array.

If I were to carry out this analysis for a client, I'd def use 12 hours maximum, for my analysis instead of 24hours.

For batteries..
Since our total watt-hour is 15,000Wh, we'll have to divide this value with the voltage of the entire system. If you'll go with a 24V system, then 15,000Wh ÷ 24V = 625Ah. Now to ensure your battery bank last long in service, we multiply this value by 2 (this prevents usage beyond 50%). Hence, 625 × 2 = 1,250Ah. Let's just take it to the nearest 200. So we have 1,400Ah.

Mind you, batteries are usually rated as 12V so a parallel connection will give you 24V. Therefore, you need 14 of 200Ah batteries connected in series and parallel to give you 1,400Ah.
For a battery bank of that size use 6 or 2 volt batteries. Manufacturers don't recommend more than three strings for your bank. 7 banks is a nightmare and the potential for battery failure is high.
5 hours of direct sunshine is ambitious. For Lagos 4 to 4.5. You can Google irradiance charts for the area you live.

My Ogas,

I have finally installed my panels and they've been up for a couple of weeks, I get somewhere between 4500 and 5000Kwh everyday,
I have 6 X 200W Monochrystalline panels (Vmp-37, Imp-5.35), I connected all of them in series parallel(made a mistake initially) and Max Amps I get is somewhere between 22 and 29 at peak sunlight (this is usually at 11AMish for me). I used 6mm stranded cable between the panels and controller, the distance is about 15m. I used a Xantra 60A MPPT Charge controller.

I have a couple of questions:

Would I get more current if I connect the panels in strings of 2 or 3?
The KW is usually see in the charge controller menu is low, highest ever is maybe 700W, even though current can be as high as 25A, what's the significance of this?
If I want to install a DC circuit breaker between the panels and the charge controller what size should it be?
63 A breaker is what I use. You max at 24 V should be about 50 amps. The MPPT steps down the voltage and steps up the amp. I will increase the voltage and reduce the amps. Also look behind your panels and see what the maximum serial connections for your your panels. I am sure you have exceeded them by a bit.
As someone said your cables are too thin too push that amount of amps over that distance. Increase the voltage and reduce the amps

Dear House, Thanks for a very informative and vibrant house.

I am currently challenged (my first one) with a project that i have calculated that the consumption of the house is 20,300 Ah per day. All my calculations seem to be going off the charts.

Gurus please assist me in sizing this setup with a 24 v inverter.

Thanks ....
On your 24 V you need about 1800 AH in batteries (@50% DOD). And 4500 Watts for your panels.
The refrigerator and freezer if they are new don't run for 24 hours straight. They run for approximately 6 to 8 hours a day. That might help you reduce your useage.
Good luck

I topped up with water and continued my trip keeping an eye on the temp gauge. The gauge was in red again when I was on carter bridge but it went back to normal while I was looking for a safe sport to park. Same thing happened like 4 times before I got to home. What does the gauge fluctuation mean? Should I be worried?
