Foreign Affairs › Busted!!! Ghost Of Kiev Footage Actually From A Video Game. by chronique(op): 9:34pm On Mar 02, 2022
A clip of a Ukrainian fighter jet blowing up a suspected Russian aircraft started trending on social media yesterday. Many believed it was proof of the exploits of a mysterious and unverified ace pilot called the “Ghost of Kyiv.” It was actually fake footage from the 2013 PC game, Digital Combat Simulator: World.

As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine entered its second day, rumors began to circulate of Ukrainian fighter pilot responsible for taking down multiple Russian targets. “The General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces has claimed five Russian aircraft and a helicopter were shot down early Thursday,” CNN reported on February 24 (via Snopes). Russia, however, denied the losses.

With apparent clips of a jet circling around the Ukraine capital of Kyiv already spreading on social media, some went looking for evidence of the downed Russian aerial forces, and because the internet will always give you what you’re looking for whether it’s real or not, it didn’t take long for seeming footage of the “Ghost of Kyiv” in action to start making the rounds. By February 25 the following video went viral:

As Snopes, Reuters, and others later confirmed, however, the footage was actually from a YouTube video that was explicit about being only a fictional homage. “This footage is from DCS, but is nevertheless made out of respect for ‘The Ghost of Kiev,’” wrote user Comrade_Corb in the description of the video. “If he is real, may God be with him; if he is fake, I pray for more like ‘him.’”

Still, it would have been easy to mistake for the real thing at a glance because it’s designed to look like it was filmed with the vertical apsect ratio of a smartphone, and people can be heard breathlessly commenting in the background.

Digital Combat Simulator was a widely released free-to-play flight sim that’s now more than a decade old. Developed by Eagle Dynamics, a company founded in Russia but which is now headquartered in Switzderland, DCS: World’s default map is set in the Caucasus region near Russia, Georgia, and Crimea.

A spokesperson for Eagle Dynamics, Matthias Techmanski, confirmed to Reuters that the fictional video from YouTube spreading like wildfire on social media was indeed from DCS. “We are not responsible for its distribution, nor do we endorse such content,” he said.

Some media outlets have taken to referring to the viral clip as a “miscaptioned video” and Twitter has flagged some of the most liked and retweeted versions of it as “media presented out of context.” While that’s certainly true in a technical sense, it hardly captures the by now well-established phenomenon of misinformation that spreads online whenever major news is breaking, often using hyper-realistic footage from video games.

It’s now a media literacy 101 to be skeptical of any unsourced information spread by seemingly random accounts online. And while some people might still be learning how to navigate the tumult of posts whenever a new crisis or tragedy takes over the news cycle, it’s almost always the bigger accounts, the ones who should (and often do) know better, who are actually helping to drive the flow of bullshit. That’s not an accident. It’s by design.

They don't make anything and when they do, it's substandard Soviet era rubbish.

Small 5 day war and Russia is already rubbish, their money is already less than 1 penny, people are already lining up to cash their worthless money, people are banning them all over the world.

Sad..
Ignorance is truly bliss. Apparently you don't know that Mercedes, BMW, Renault and Volkswagen have plants in Russia where they make some of the luxury brands you see in the European market. Sit down in Nigeria and be dishing false information.

World's largest cargo plane destroyed by Russian strikes in Ukraine, state-owned group says
FEBRUARY 28, 2022 / 1:34 PM / CBS/AFP

The largest cargo plane in the world — Ukraine's Antonov-225 — was destroyed by Russian strikes outside Kyiv on the fourth day of Moscow's invasion, Ukraine's state-owned Ukroboronprom group said.

"Russian invaders destroyed the flagship of the Ukrainian aviation, the AN-225" at the Antonov airport in Gostomel near Kyiv, the group said in a statement Sunday. The group said at the time of invasion, the aircraft was under repair, so it did not have time to be moved out of Ukraine.

The aircraft was unique to the world. At 276 feet long, it could transport up to 551,000 pounds of cargo at a speed of up to 528 mph.
It had been named "Mriya," which means "dream" in Ukrainian.
"This was the world's largest aircraft, AN-225 'Mriya'" Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba tweeted Sunday. This was the world’s largest aircraft, AN-225 ‘Mriya’ (‘Dream’ in Ukrainian). Russia may have destroyed our ‘Mriya’. But they will never be able to destroy our dream of a strong, free and democratic European state. We shall prevail!

— Dmytro Kuleba (@DmytroKuleba) February 27, 2022 posted on twitter.

Gostomel airport has seen violent clashes since the start of Russia's invasion, launched by President Vladimir Putin Thursday. The Russian army has said it is trying to seize strategic infrastructure.

Weapons manufacturer Ukroboronprom estimated that restoring the "Mriya" would cost over $3 billion and could take over five years. "Our mission is to ensure that these expenses are covered by Russia, which deliberately inflicted damage on Ukraine's aviation," the group said.

Initially built as part of the Soviet aeronautical program, the AN-225 made its first flight in 1988. Antonov-225 "Mriya" plane, operated by Ukraine's Antonov Airlines.

After years of not flying after the fall of the Soviet Union, the only existing copy made a test flight in 2001 in Gostomel, about 12 miles from Kyiv. It has been operated by Ukraine's Antonov Airlines for cargo flights and was in high demand during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We will fight for our land and our home until we win," said Yuriy Husyev said, the general director of Ukroboronprom. "And after the victory, we will definitely finish our new 'Mriya,' which has been waiting for this in a safe place for many years."

Daily mail and junk news. Putin will come all the way down to Africa to look for mercenaries to go and hunt down Zelensky in Ukraine? Do you know how long it would take them to even get used to the environment, understand the terrain and blend with the people? And to top it up, they are always tracking his phone and they know his location everytime. Anybody that believes this nonsense should just start looking for how to get a brain transplant cos that person obviously doesn't have a functional brain at all.

I'd check that out. The thing with this Russian Ukraine war is that accurate real time information about what is happening on ground, is hard to come by. The major news platforms like al Jazeera, CNN, Reuters and Co haven't carried this info. It's really difficult to know which side is telling the truth and lying all the time.

The part where he said "they were trying to replace America's democracy with woke tyranny" speaks volume. America needs to stop interfering with the leadership of foreign countries. This is one of the things causing problems for the world at large. Iraq and Libya readily comes to mind. Not forgetting that this Ukrainian crisis also erupted from the American backed coup in 2014 that saw former President Viktor Yanukovych removed and replaced with Petro Poroshenko.

The war is not needed. Mayor of Kiev has confirmed they have been surrounded by Russian troops and evacuation of civilians is impossible. The mayor of Kharkov has explained to the civilians there the need to negotiate and surrender to the Russian troops in order to save lives. I hope Kiev does same too and just allow this thing to be over once and for all to save lives cos as it is, they are not winning the battle. War is not a good thing. The level of destruction that Ukraine has experienced these few days, is running into billions already.

that's definitely what it implies. You can't decide how NATO runs its affairs. How would its members perceive such action?
If NATO agrees to such outrageous demand, the whole world will be talking about how NATO is a paper tiger and Putin is the man. Undermining NATO interest all over the world.

Russia isn't a world power, it's a regional power in Eurasia. The USSR was world power, Russia isn't.

Finland neutrality that the same Putin has now put in jeopardy that the country is considering requesting for NATO membership.

Global politics is diplomacy not show or threat of force . Instead of demanding NATO to stop Ukraine, why not lobby say Germany and some other countries that were friendly to Russia like Hungary and the rest to veto Ukraine request.
Isn't that the best solution in all this?
Russia is a world power. You can't change that based on your sentiments on the topic. Do your research and don't try to misinform people on this subject please.

Putin also wants them to put in place governments that answer to him, same as the US wants governments that are favourable to them. Either way, Ukraine wants its own freedom( and for its legit government, staying under NATO is the answer. For me it is crap, but there we have it). Invasion is not the answer.

At the end, for me, it is two power blocs fighting each other for power using NATO and Russia as their proxies. That is the way of the world.
Putin does not need them answering to him. All he wants is neutrality just like Finland.

NAto wants to Expand into Russia and is doing so steathily Russsia got wind of it and decide to act before Nato plans are completed.

Look at the amount of ammunition being pumped into Ukraine
Let me be honest with you. The US are pushing eastward so they can have a regime change in Kremlin. Putin saw how they achieved that in his neighboring Ukraine in 2014 and is annoyed with such. If he doesn't act now and stop that NATO expansion to his borders, he would have problems in few years time. Now is the time to put a stop to it. The moment US gains power to effect a regime change in Kremlin, Russia stops being a world power that she has always been as she'd continually become a crony of the US, not that world power that can challenge the US.
