IMF Forces African Nations to Remove Fuel Subsidies By NewsRescue On January 1, 2012 At 9:14 pm NewsRescue- Joining Guinea, Cameroon, Ghana and Chad, Nigeria on New Years day removed fuel subsidies in accordance with an order from the IMF (International Monetary Fund). This created a jump in the price of automobile fuel from about 55 Naira per liter to 140Naira per liter overnight, Sunday. This brings fuel/gas prices in Nigeria to about the same price it is in the US, though lower than many European nations. Nigerians used to pay about $1.51 / gallon, the European average is about $5-6.00/gallon, while the US average is $3-3.70/gallon. While other oil producing nations, like Venezuela, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia are about $0.12, $0.78 and $0.91 respectively. This hike in fuel prices was compelled on African Nations by the IMF due to supposedly rising global oil prices and the Europe recession. Trying to invoke an “African Spring?” The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Christine Lagarde visited Nigeria to meet with the President, Goodluck Johnathan in December 2011 to drive home this directive. This move invites frustration on African nations which comparatively escaped the “Greed” Wall street recession that has been marauding and collapsing European and Middle Eastern economies, with resulting hardship, riots and Government change, including the popular “occupy” riots still plaguing the United States and other European nations, the August 2011 “Robin-hood” riots of the UK, the collapse of Greece economy, that likewise affected the Middle East with the “Arab Spring” revolutions. The meeting with Goodluck Johnathan was not just coincidental. Analysts believe it was predetermined. The IMF has been canvassing for the removal of subsidy among African countries. This pronouncement has seen governments in Nigeria, Guinea, Cameroon, Chad and Ghana moving to cut state subsidies on fuel. Yesterday, Ghana cut subsidy and it was learned that the development was due to pressure from the IMF to do so because of rise in the price of crude. The Chief Executive Officer of Ghana’s National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Alex Mould said the cumulative effect of the rise in crude oil prices this year and the about 5.7 percent depreciation of the cedi meant a 25 percent increase in cedi terms in the cost of procuring crude oil and petroleum products since January. For instance, the IMF has urged countries across West and Central Africa to cut fuel subsidies, which they say are not effective in directly aiding the poor, but do promote corruption and smuggling. The price change will see the cost of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) increase by 30 percent while petrol and diesel will go up 15 percent at pumps in Ghana. Mould said Ghana has spent about 450 million cedis on fuel subsidies in 2011. Ghana’s Minister for Finance Kwabena Duffour said the removal of subsidies would have a positive impact on Ghana’s economy. Duffour said: “Subsidising fuel is not sustainable. It is the right thing to do so we can sustain our fiscal consolidation.” This is the same music that the protagonists of subsidy removal in Nigeria, like the Coordinating Minister of Economy and Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; the Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke and the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi are singing. While Sanusi insisted that the economy would breakdown if the subsidy is not removed, Ngozi said Nigerians would be better off without subsidy. Ghana’s subsidy removal yesterday confirmed people’s speculations that Western powers are behind the move to stop subsidy. Development in Ghana has also gone to confirm that the Nigerian government would boycott the public outcry on subsidy removal and go ahead to remove. There is no provision for subsidy in the 2012 budget proposal submitted by President Goodluck Jonathan. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) has said that from next year they would not pay for subsidy because there is no provision for it in the budget. The development also negates the IMF’s saying that it does not tailor policies for any country to follow, but only provide technical supports. But during the visit of Lagarde to Nigeria, she said, “I came here primarily to listen to our African members, and to find out how we can better tailor support to countries in this region in the current difficult global environment.” Nigeria is indeed in serious economic problem. For instance, the value of the currency has been devaluing against major foreign currencies. The official value of naira against dollar is currently 156 to a dollar and at the Bureau De Change, it goes for 165 against the dollar. The governor of central bank, Sanusi sometime this year faulted the IMF for suggesting that the value of the naira be devalued to protect further depreciation of the foreign reserves. However, the governor bowed to pressure and got the naira devalued. It is the same pressure from the Western powers that is pushing the government to remove fuel subsidy. In Nigeria, removal of subsidy would necessarily lead to hike in fuel pump and such hike would trigger increment in the price of other commodities and services. It is already been speculated that by next year, when subsidy might have been removed, Nigerians would have to pay as high as N140 per litre of petrol. The price is currently N65 per litre. What this means is that Nigerians should gird up for tough times next year. This is because any increase in the price of fuel would push the cost of production in the manufacturing industry up. Also, cost of transportation would go up and even operators of Small, Medium Scale Enterprises would not be able to continue in business because most of them relied on generators to power their machines and generators are powered by fuel. Some civil society organizations and organized labour are urging Nigerians to come out and protest subsidy removal. The question is, can Nigerians occupy the “Three Arm Zone” as Americans “Occupied” the “Street.” Subsidy removal is turning out to be another Bretton Woods Institutions’ anti-peoples’ policy. It is a neo-liberal agenda developed by those in authority. It is not a popular idea but that of the ruling power. It is becoming a dominant idea because in every political setting, the dominant idea is the idea of the ruling power. Now that the government is bent on removing subsidy from fuel against people’s outcry, the question to ask is if this is the “Fresh Air” that President Goodluck promised Nigerians during his campaigning? – source http://www.newsrescue.com/2012/01/imf-forces-african-nations-to-remove-fuel-subsidies/ |

Beaf:Beaf, many nigerians, especially those who live in lagos, are lamenting that they are not able to go home now because they cannot afford to due to the hike in fuel price. They have spent most of their money while at village and only saved up as much as they thought they needed to arrive back home. Had they been given an exact date of the subsidy removal, they would have tread back on their spending, but, because of the surprised removal they had no way of knowing to do so now they are stuck. How is this to be remedied? Also take into mind, Jonathan admin said that the subsidy would be removed some time in april i believe. why the sudden change with no announcement before hand, at least around mid december? How is it that a state of emergency and fuel subsidy can be announced by the pres all at the same time as if it is a game or a big surprise gift? It makes it seem as though he waited for a build up or special time(New Years, Christmas, Halloween, Easter,Igbo Day,etc.). Why would a leader play around with lives like that? |

The Ezza have their own particular land. They are a big clan, especially when compared to Ezilo. They were in Ezza land before they were invited by the Ezilo to fight the Ngwo. The Ezza there are now called Ezza-Ezilo and are trying to expand outside of ther land that was given to them by the Ezilo. Whenever those Ezza in Ezilo land are abused by the Ezilo the Ezza people go and call there people from their real land, which is a lot of them, then they unleash havoc. Both Ezza and Ezilo clans are treacherous people thats why when they war they war big. Kinda reminds me of the Aros. When they use to get their butts kicked, they got tired of it, then seeked help from the Ohafia and Abiriba clans. ![]() |

Oyo pilgrims’ welfare board members in bloody clash •Board chairman beaten to unconscious Friday, 30 December 2011 Members of the Oyo State Pilgrims' Welfare Board (Muslim Wing), on Wednesday, engaged one another in a bloody clash during which the chairman, Alhaji Akewugberu Taofeek, was beaten unconscious. Nigerian Tribune learnt, on Thursday in Ibadan, that the chairman and his deputy, Alhaji Abass Oloko, had been at each other's throat since their appointment into the board by the present administration. Their rivalry, Nigerian Tribune learnt, was exhibited before their departure for hajj and even while in the holy land. The source further disclosed that the board chairman had summoned a meeting of board members with the intention of briefing them on the last hajj and the preparations for the new year. The vice chairman, the source said, complained that he was not officially informed about the planned meeting and, therefore, stormed the board's secretariat at Olodo with people suspected to be thugs and asked them to seal off the offices to prevent the meeting from taking place. It took the intervention of a top government official in the state before the offices were reopened. According to the source, another meeting had been fixed for Thursday before the attack at the peace meeting. The matter was reported at the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), while the board chairman was treated at the Adeoyo General Hospital. When contacted the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Femi Okanlawon, confirmed the incident and said that it was being investigated. Efforts to get the board chairman to speak on the incident proved abortive, as his telephone lines were switched off. http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/33541-oyo-pilgrims-welfare-board-members-in-bloody-clash-board-chairman-beaten-to-unconscious |

Echoes of war in Ikorodu, as land grabbers send community packing On December 31, 2011 · In Crime Guard By Albert Akpor THE present situation at Igbokuta, a community in Ikorodu, Lagos is pathetic. The graphic picture of the entire community noted for its social and communal conviviality is now that of a desolate graveyard as men, women, children and even animals have fled the village for safety. The warlike situation has been traced to the emergence and cruelty of land grabbers who invaded the hitherto peaceful community, selling the villagers’ ancestral lands and unleashing terror on who dared them. Incidentally, the mother of the alleged leader of the assailants simply identified as Lai is a native of Igbokuta. In the ensuing hostility, a 27-year-old father of three identified as Azeez Ayeni Aliu, the son of a retired soldier who dared one of the assailants paid the supreme price; he was shot dead right at the village square and at the glare of his father. His corpse is still at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital mortuary. Others who challenged the notoriety of the land grabbers were maimed, chased out of the the community and their houses pulled down. A pregnant woman and wife of one of the traditional rulers (names withheld) who, because of her position in the village, questioned the inhumanity of the land grabbers was reportedly dragged to a nearby bus path, stripped Unclad and serially violated by thugs hired to perpetrate the heinous act. When Crime Guard visited the ravaged community amid caution, a handful of the fear- stricken villagers who mustered courage to come out of their hidings pointed accusing fingers at head of the police in the area who they say is acting the script of a Deputy Inspector-General of Police DIG ‘D’ department (now late) and beneficiary of the land grabbers. They alleged that the Area Commander is always looking the other side when these land grabbers are wrecking havoc, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Yakubu Alkali alleging the police boss got 10 acres of land at give away price from the said Lai. But the Area Commander has since debunked such allegation describing it as “baseless and frivolous”. Further more, the villagers are also accusing a retired army personnel simply identified as Captain Ajas who they claimed got over 200 acres of land from the said land grabbers. They are alleging that the retired Captain was in the habit of invading the community with soldiers from the 147 Battalion, Odogunyan Barracks and sometimes, with men of the OPS MESA . According to them, police complicity and violation of justice were aptly exhibited late this year after some innocent boys, four of them; were arrested by men of the OPS MESA allegedly brought in by the retired Captain Ajas and two locally made pistols were planted on them. The four innocent persons were whisked to Lagos and charged for illegal possession of fire arms and thereafter, dumped in Kirikiri. Another area where the villagers are bitter with the police was when the said Lai allegedly shot dead Azeez last year. They claimed that he was arrested by detectives from the Zone 2 Command headquarters Onikan with the riffle with which he killed the man but was granted bail moments later until the entire community protested at the Lagos state government house. The protest match was said to have forced the Directorate of Public Prosecution DPP to order Lai’s re-arrest and prosecution for murder. But again, and as if the said Lai was above the law, they claimed he was arraigned for murder and granted bail pending the determination of the murder charge. However, no sooner than he got his temporary freedom that he was reported to have stormed the village in the company of other hired thugs led by one ‘Sir K’ and resumed hostility on the hapless people. Furthermore, the villagers are very angry with the police high command on the ground that Lai’s alleged partner -in -crime, ‘Sir K’ who was declared wanted by the Police Official Gazette No: CB: 2685/FHQ/ABJ/O90511 on allegations of murder was recently seen at the premises of the ‘Area N’ Command headquarters Ikorodu even with police escort. But the Area Commander again denied the allegation saying he was never aware that the said ‘Sir K’ was declared wanted. And recently, when police detectives from the Special Investigation Unit SIU came all the way from Abuja for the arrest of Lai following a petition from the villagers, immediately he got to Abuja, the late DIG ‘D’ department ordered for his release on self recognition. But a recent investigation revealed that the people seemed to have exhausted their patience and are actually ready to take their destinies in their hands. They have declared war against their tormentors as those who had fled are finding their ways back to town with a vow to fight back. The acting head of the community (Baale), Chief Ayeni Aliu who in company of other battle-ready returnees, said they would no longer tolerate any further harassment and intimidation. The Baale in an emotion laden voice said he was personally prepared to shed his blood for the return of peace since both the state and federal government have refused to harken to their cries. He traced the origin of the present calamity in Igbokuta to 2007 when he challenged the said Lai for recklessly selling their ancestral lands. The retired soldier-turned preacher of Jesus Christ who also doubles as head of Ayeni family gave the genealogy of Igbokuta village as being made up of seven ruling families one of which the mother of the man allegedly perpetrating the mayhem belongs. According to him, “This whole thing started in July 2007 when I challenged my cousin, Olayiwola Nosiru for recklessly selling our father land. He and his gang stormed the village, armed to the teeth threatening fire and brim stone. He threatened he was going to kill me if I dared stand on his way; but I told him he could not do anything. Surprisingly, he dashed out and resurfaced with a rifle, pointed it at me and fired, but as a trained retired soldier, I dived and the bullet caught my son Azeez and he slumped. He died moments after on the way to the hospital. Another youth was caught in the eye by some pellets and the man is temporary blind as I talk to you now. Igbokuta village is made up of seven ruling families; they are: the Oni family, the Ayeni family (where Lai’s mother comes from), the Bello family, the Oshiluye family, the Kuye family, the Jigan family and of course, the Shonaya family. Olayiwola Nosiru who is wrecking this havoc is not from this place; it is his mother that comes from our family and he is my cousin. And that was why after he killed my son, he put his hands on his head shouting and lamenting, “Oh, I have killed my brother, oh, I have killed my brother”. As I speak to you now, the remains of my son is still in the mortuary. After this murderous act, he was arrested by detectives from zone 2, and the rifle with which he killed my son was recovered. But the entire village was shocked when he was granted bail almost immediately. And he came directly to the village and boasted that he would wreck more havoc. This is when we had to stage a protest match to governor’s office at Alausa, Ikeja during which the DPP was forced to recommend for his re-arrest and later arraignment for murder. He has sine been granted bail and the case is before Justice Onigbanjo of court 41; and for a year and half now, we have been going to court with no headway. Since the matter is in court one would have expected that he would calm down but no, he is still wrecking more havoc. You can see that the village is a shadow of itself now. Men, women, the youths have all fled. He came here shooting recklessly and killing our animals; as you can see now, there is no single goat, no fowl, nothing. They pulled down houses and broke open some whose occupants had fled for safety. Four of our our boys were arrested in their rooms by some policemen with the inscription MOPOL 22 on their van on flimsy excuse that they were in possession of fire arms, whereas, it was the policemen that planted the same guns on them. As I talk now, those boys are languishing in Kirikiri. On several occasions, I personally called Lai because like I told you, he is my cousin; that there is nothing wrong in living in one’s mother’s village if he has issues in his father’s community and that you don’t do this by causing untold hardship to your kinsmen. He has a particular friend named Lamino Kamorudeen alias ‘Sir K’ with whom he is ravaging our community and I think they are above the law; otherwise, the said ‘Sir K’ was recently declared want by the Inspector-General of Police on Police Official Gazette No: CB: 2685/FHQ/ABJ/090511 but he was seen all over Ikorodu town even with police escort. So how do you reconcile that? It is on this strength that I had to come back home and started calling on all my people that had fled the community to come back and let us salvage our community together. We are battle ready since both the state and federal government have refused to hear our cries. We have written several petitions to the IGP but nothing meaningful has come out of it. Perhaps it was one of those petitions that provoked the IGP to order for the arrest of ‘Sir K’ and declared him wanted in their official gazette. But he was recently at the Area ‘N’ Command, Ikorodu together with his friend Lai when detectives from Abuja came for him. You will not believe that at Abuja, the late DIG ‘D’ Department whose office declared ‘Sir K’ wanted and requested for Lai as a result of our petition granted him bail that same day. This is why we are saying we have no hope than to fight for ourselves. In fairness, Governor Fashola responded positively at the heat of the hostility last year but I think his hands are tied now because these men seemed to have assumed the status of sacred cows. We need justice but since it has eluded us, we are ready to take our destinies in our hands. Lai and his men cannot kill all of us in one day; surely some people will be alive to tell the story of how our village was wiped out.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/12/echoes-of-war-in-ikorodu-as-land-grabbers-send-community-packing/ |

Igbo‘ll toe Ojukwu’s line if attacks continue, says Anglican bishop By Nwanosike Onu 4 hours 39 minutes ago Anglican Bishop of Enugu, Emmanuel Chukwuma, said yesterday in Awka, Anambra State, that the people of South-East will follow in the late Ikemba Nnewi, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu's footstep by declaring war again if the Federal Government fails to address the issue of Boko Haram. He spoke when Oil and Gas mogul, Dr Ifeanyi Uba’s foundation distributed kerosene and other items to indigent persons, widows and less privileged in Awka. Chukwuma, who was not happy over the killing of Nigerians by the Boko Haram sect, said the names of Igbo people who have been killled were being compiled, adding that a meeting would soon be called on the issue. He said: '’If the Federal Government fails to do something urgently, we shall declare war in Nigeria. Our quietness should not be seen as cowardice. If the issue is not addressed, we will resume Ojukwu's fight against injustice. Enough is enough.'’ However, he said he was in Awka in his capacity as the South-East Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to give support to the Ifeanyi Uba Foundation for what it had been doing in the country. He stated that even the poverty alleviation programme of the government had equally failed, adding that Ndigbo would look for a common platform in the next election to fight the imbalance in the system. Chukwuma further berated the South-East leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for being unable to carry Ndigbo along, adding that the people of the zone would support the Chief of Capital Oil for whatever ambition he declares. He noted that so many politicians in the South-East have failed the people of the zone by not providing jobs for the youth, adding that the politicians should open constituency offices for the youths. He appluaded what the foundation was doing, stating that his Enugu diocese had supported over 2,614 widows in the state. The founder of the foundation, Dr Ifeanyi Uba, announced that the exercise would be a continous one, adding that about 15 tanker loads of kerosene would be distributed at the rate of N60 per litre. Over 4,000 indigent persons, 4,000 less privileged, 4,000 widows and phyiscally challenged, including over 5, 000 people aged 65 years and above got the largese of the foundation yesterday. Each of them went home with one bag of rice while more than 20 motherless babies homes collected 10 bags of rice each with baby toys, sewing machines and cartons of biscuits, among other items. Also, the National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance , Chief Victor Umeh, told reporters that the Chief Executive of capital Oil and Gas, Dr Ifeanyi Uba, had joined the party. Although he did not disclose whether he would turn out to be the governorship candidate of APGA, Umeh said APGA would not sell its governorship ticket for 2014 to anybody. On the said earlier arrangement that APGA had zoned the governorship ticket to Anambra North, Umeh said there was no such arrangment, adding that if there was, the party would not honour it because the people of the area voted against APGA during the last general election in the state. http://www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/index.php/news/31693-igbo%E2%80%98ll-toe-ojukwu%E2%80%99s-line-if-attacks-continue%2C-says-anglican-bishop.html |
