NIGERIA: Kwara, Saudi Foundation To Partner On Education

Published on Monday, 14 January 2013 19:57

Written by Agency Reporter

The Kwara Government is to partner with the International Islamic Foundation of the World Muslim League in Saudi Arabia to boost education in the state.

Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed said this on Monday when the General Secretary of the Foundation, Dr Ali Magbul Al-Amri, paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House in Ilorin.

He said this was part of his administration’s effort at enhancing human capital development in the state.

Ahmed said the proposed 2013 budget accorded the highest vote to education as an indication of the government’s commitment to the development of the sector.

“Our decision to put much emphasis and funding of the education sector is because education is one of the most important instruments that mankind can use for growth and development,’’ he added.

Government, he said, would be committing about $15 million to drive the International Vocational Centre where youths would learn skills and become entrepreneurs.

Ahmed identified infrastructure for acquisition of technical skills and special needs as major areas of need by the state.

In his remarks, Al-Amri said the Foundation’s nine-point agenda included eradication of illiteracy and evolvement of syllabi that promote human capital resources.

He said the body was also interested in the creation of access to education for the physically challenged, adding that it was ready to partner with the state government on its education agenda.

Awolowo's cowardice,two-facedness, and failure to stand for what he believed in is the reason he died and can only be remembered as someone who spent his who political career trying to ascend to presidency but alwaysed failed. It is another reason why his people will now have to fight a losing battle to try and reclaim Ilorin and Offa from the Fulani. Igbomina is another place in which fulani will take with no sweat, you watch. Thanks to Awolowos cowardice. His devilish contributions has now done away with his people's future.hahahahaha

Members of a group, the Biafra Zionist Movement (BZM), yesterday organised a peaceful rally in Lagos.

They said it was in lieu of their planned declaration of the Sovereign State of Biafra next Monday.

The rally, tagged: Redemption at last, was held at Ladipo Oshodi. It lasted for about three hours.

Scores of youths, especially Igbo, joined the rally.

They carried the flag of the defunct Republic of Biafra and the national flags of the United States of America, Israel and France.

The Biafra Republic agitators said they would also protest “Islamic banking, economic system, marginalisation of Biafra, lack of adequate security of life and property as well as neglect of infrastructure in the area”.

As early as 9am, the demonstrators were at the venue, chanting songs, such as The Elephant of Biafra; We’re marching to the promise land of Biafra.

Some of the demonstrators told The Nation that they had the backing of the other countries whose flags they were carrying.

According to them, they are tired of the neglect of the Oji Power Dam and River Niger Bridge, a lack of an international airport in the East, the neglect of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, the Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway and the killings of their people in the North by Boko Haram, among others.

Speaking with The Nation, leader of the demonstrators, Mr. Kingsley Anyaegbunam, said: “The Biafran journey started since early 1967 by our leader, the late Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu. Though he was unable to actualise his dreams, some other people have taken up the challenge. We have the support of other countries, such as Israel and America.

“We are tired of this failed country, with countless promises. We are no longer waiting for them. November 5 is the day of the official declaration, because we need to be independent as quickly as possible.”

Another member of the group, Comrade Emeka Onwane said: “Benjamin Onwunka, our leader, resides in London, but he came to Nigeria because of this Biafran freedom we are talking about. He has participated in various rallies and campaigns.

“The essence of this rally is to mobilise the Igbo, who are not aware of the Biafran struggle. We want them to know there will be freedom for us soon. We want them to join in the struggle because what we are talking about is not one man’s race. The sky is our starting point.”

One of the participants, Chidi Obi said: “This dream cannot be actualised without the full support of the people. We need to join hands to make our peaceful state a reality. The state, which has promised to be a state of milk and honey, is the right of every Igbo man, woman and their children.”

THIS is not a defence of Chinua Achebe. He does not need one. No amount of abuse can dent his global standing. Ban or burn all his books, as someone suggested, he would only feel sorry for you, not angry.

Achebe has since outgrown certain sentiments. On the other hand, if Chief Awolowo were alive, he would have cautioned people against some of the vituperative effusions, especially by people craving relevance with Awo’s name and who cried more than the bereaved.

Awo’s daughter, Ambassador Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu, made one of the most mature reactions. She simply said if what was said to have been written was true, she was disappointed but would not say more than that until she read the book!

Awo was an accomplished and fulfilled man before he died. Nothing said now by ethnic jingoists and fake Awoists can add any value to his eminent standing.

What the nation has witnessed since the publication of an excerpt of a review of Achebe’s There Was A Country: A Personal History of Biafra by Guardian of London is a classic decline of intellectual discourse in Nigeria.

At the time the needless controversy ensued, not more than 10 people would say they had read the book. The first few copies available in Nigeria at the material time were review copies sent to some journalists by Dr. Chidi Achebe.

Others were those who travelled to countries where the book had been published and were able to buy a copy, or were sent a copy by friends abroad. Therefore all those who plunged into attack and counter-attack based on excerpts of a review simply embarrassed themselves. It really did not mean that the outcome would have been radically different if more Nigerians read the book.

I say so because Nigerians read with two brains. While one is reading what was written, the other is busy formulating what the reader believes you wrote! It is therefore not surprising that, in this kind of situation, the combatants in the futile but emotionally charged controversy quickly took cover behind ethnic parapets!

Last week I finished reading a copy sent me by Chidi and I felt more disappointed with the entire hullabaloo about the book and the abuses that went all round. In the first place, the duty a writer of Achebe’s status owes humanity is to shock it with the truth whenever it develops amnesia.

Achebe did just that with his book, 42 years after the civil war. He seems to have succeeded in rousing us from our amnesia, except that the intellectual debate is yet to ensue, and except also that, in Nigeria, my truth is a lie, and your lie is the truth! Secondly, it was wrong to make it seem as if Awo was the subject of the book. He was not even the important point in the book.

The controversial reference to Awolowo did not appear until page 233 of a 333-page book, including appendices, notes and index! Nevertheless, those who have been reading will tell you that Achebe did not say anything new about Awolowo nor has he ever hidden his views about the Yoruba leader!

Nature of Nigerian debate

It is the nature of Nigerian debate that those who insistently make Awo an ethnic champion often turn round to accuse others of diminishing Awo’s status, making me wonder if those who swear in Awo’s name really knew him. For example, Femi Fani-Kayode who effusively described Awo as “much loved leader of the Yoruba” easily turned round, tongue in cheek, to accuse Achebe of “ethnic chauvinism”.

There are not many Yoruba who locate Awo beyond the ethnic enclave to a national stage, unless you tell me that Nigeria begins at Mokola and ends at Dugbe! It took Chief Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu to posthumously elevate Awo to “the best President Nigeria never had”.

One thing any reader of Achebe would confess is that the man tries his best to choose his words carefully. The controversial portion of the book came under the subheading, The Case Against the Nigerian Government. There he took not only Awolowo, but also, Allison Ayida and Anthony Enahoro to task.

And he prefaced his criticism of Awo’s motive for employing starvation as a weapon of war with the words, “it is my impression that…” We can debate whether Achebe’s impression was wrong without name calling, ethnic baiting or profiling.

And that is, if we have any intellectually honest reason to read that portion in isolation of everything else he wrote elsewhere in the book about Awolowo and Yoruba nation!

A few hard questions can be asked: Did Awo have ambition for power for himself and for the advancement of his Yoruba people? Yes he did.

That was an ambition he spent all his political life pursuing. Did Awo see the dominant Igbo as obstacle to that desire? You may argue that Awo was not the only one who saw the Igbo as obstacle but you cannot deny what happened to Zik in Ibadan in 1951.

Hear my friend Ayo Opadokun: “What he (Achebe) expected was that Awo should fold his arms to allow the Igbo race led by Zik to preside over the affairs of the Yoruba nation” (The Nation 5 October 2012). Further, he admitted that “it was clear that the East and West were in contest for socio-economic and political power”. Tell me, could Achebe have put the matter any clearer than Opadokun did?

Just as Achebe conceded that there was nothing wrong with Awo’s aspirations, there was nothing wrong with contest between the East and West for socio-economic and political power, except that no ethnic group in Nigeria wants to contest with Igbo on equal terms or compete on a level playing field. Nigeria obviously felt happy that it has removed the Igbo obstacle by inscribing the Federal Character in the constitution.

And we cannot deny that there was a sing-song of “Igbo domination” in the years leading to the crises that led to the coup and the war. Unfortunately, the fear of “Igbo domination” not only created an enduring conspiracy to cripple the Igbo but also left an unsettled issue of citizenship that has created the dichotomy of “settler” and “indigene” for which blood flows in the Plateau today.

In defence of Awo

I think it was futile to defend Awo on the matter of starvation as a weapon of war after he proffered his own personal defence. In his well publicised 1983 interview, Awo did not deny the charges levied against him by Biafrans.

He simply rationalised his actions. Respected elder statesman and one of the living authentic Awoists, Chief Ayo Adebanjo apparently based his defence of Awo on this interview (Thisday 13 Oct 2012). We can appreciate Awo’s rationalisation or disagree with them. I disagree with some.

Awo said he went to Calabar, Enugu and Port Harcourt shortly after their liberation. “I saw kwashiorkor victims…Then I enquired what happened to the food we are sending to the victims…but what happened was that the vehicles carrying the food were always ambushed by the soldiers…and the food would then be taken to the soldiers to feed them, and so they were able to continue the fight”.

The flaw in this rationalisation is that people may conclude that Awo stopped food supply because Biafran soldiers were hijacking them. In the first place, Nigerian NEVER supplied food to Biafra.

Whatever food Nigeria supplied was to those “liberated” areas behind Biafran lines. Those areas were under the control of the Nigerian army.

Therefore if the vehicles conveying the food were ambushed by soldiers, it could only be by Nigerian soldiers! Food that came into Biafra were direct from World Council of Churches, Caritas, International Red Cross and French NGOs.

These supplies were directly administered by the churches, priests and Red Cross through their feeding centres.

The humanitarian disaster in Biafra was exacerbated when Nigeria closed the air corridors by shooting down some of the relief planes. The argument about using land corridors approved by Nigeria to supply food to Biafra was still on till the war dramatically ended.

You this blo.ody okoros are just plain evil and would stop at nothing to create division but all you attempts since the inception of Nigeria has been futile and would continue to be so! Stupid arsewipes trying to rewrite other people's history when they clearly have none!

The issue of state creation of Kogi and Kwara is clearly justified as these were states that were arbitrarily divided in the bid to separate the Yoruba nation and expand the Hausa Fulani's geographical influence and of course get more money from the centre. The real request should not necessarily be to create a new state but to perhaps bring those two states together to form just one state thereby keeping the majority Yoruba people together!

Emir of Ilorin urges religious leaders to preach peace

Posted by: Adekunle Jimoh, Ilorin Posted date: October 27, 2012 In: News |

The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari yesterday urged religious leaders in the country to preach peace to their congregation.

The Emir spoke at the Ilorin Eid praying ground during the celebration of the Eid-el-Kabir, saying religious leaders are duty bound to preach and propagate peace.

The state government in collaboration with security agencies in the state ensured adequate security measures in and around the Ilorin Eid praying ground, where Governor AbdulFatah Ahmed and his predecessor, Senator Bukola Saraki joined other worshipers to offer the two-rakah naflah.

He said the much desired growth and development would continue to be elusive unless the country is able to tackle headlong the security challenges facing it.

Sulu-Gambari enjoined his subjects to continue to live in peace and harmony with other members of the society while seeking God’s guidance for political office holders at all level.

In his sermon, the Chief Imam of Ilorin, Alhaji Mohammed Bashir Salihu admonished Muslims to imbibe the virtue of perseverance.

He said if Nigerians imbibe virtues of perseverance, patience and love, the nation would be a good place for all to live in.

Pan Yoruba social and political organisation, Afenifere, says the outcome of Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State has signalled the end of the Action Congress of Nigeria in South-West.

The group said this in its letter to the winner of the poll, Governor Olusegun Mimiko.

The letter signed by Chief Reuben Fasoranti (Leader) and Chief Seinde Arogbofa (Security) reads in part, “Afenifere salutes Mr. Governor and wishes him well.”

The group said the outcome of the election had shown that Yoruba people were tired of the ACN and would “kick them out at the appropriate time”.

The letter added, “This victory, amongst other things, is victory over god-fatherism, a rejection of political imposition and slavery from outside the state and the people’s hope of a better deal to come.

“One or two of your predecessors have one way or the other broken the jinx of second term in office. But yours is unique and not associated with rancour or political upheaval. We appreciate God for you.”

The group advised Mimiko to justify the confidence reposed in him by the electorate “through aggressive attack on graduate and able-bodied joblessness, consolidation of social services to the people and the multiplication of same to those who are yet to benefit from the government largess”.

Afenifere added, “There is a need for the exhibition of fair play and justice to all and carry the banner of progressive politics into national politics now that the eclipse of the ACN is unavoidable.

“We entered into electoral cooperation with you (Mimiko) in the election for mutual respect in all ramifications for you to give better governance to our people, and for the creation of a forum for the emergence of a healthy third force to counter an emerging group under the leadership of few disrespectful, snobbish, arrogant, ravaging and power-thirsty politicians.

“In the march for progress and greater things to come, he should consider an all inclusive government to assist him in the governance of the state.”

Ondo people have rejected tribalism
- PDP

The national leadership of the PDP also congratulated Mimiko on his re-election even as it commended the people of Ondo State for what it termed their emphatic rejection of tribalism and narrow political adventurism which it stressed were the hallmark of the campaign of the ACN.

The PDP in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, nevertheless, hailed its candidate, Oke for his courage, determination and doggedness, adding, ‘’though the PDP was not declared the winner of the election, the Party was happy with the performance of its candidate “who obviously joined the race late.”

“How better do Nigerians say no to the drumbeats of tribalism and political narrowness than what the people of Ondo have just done with their votes? “It is a quantum forward leap for those who understand the dangers of undue manipulation of national diversity for narrow political whims and a huge set back, utter rejection for the champions of ethnic politics.

“While we commend, Chief Olusola Oke, his running mate, members and supporters of our party, we wish to also congratulate Chief Olusegun Mimiko on his victory.

“Another lesson is here for the nation, especially the opposition political parties to draw from the commitment of our great Party to the full entrenchment of the legacy of free, fair and credible polls. Ostensible is the manifest unwavering devotion of President Goodluck Jonathan to the cause of democracy. He led the campaign of our Party to Ondo and promised free and fair election. He has once more delivered.”

See photos of wild jubilation in Ondo as Mimiko wins

Also hailing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC and the security agencies for the peaceful conduct of the polls, the PDP however urged “them to learn from any observed loopholes so as to continue improving in future elections.”

We are still studying the situation — ACN

The national leadership of the ACN on its part stopped short of congratulating Mimiko as it noted that it was still studying the results of the election which it claimed was marked with several irregularities.

A statement issued by the national chairman of the ACN, Chief Bisi Akande yesterday declared:

“All politicians worthy of their salt must always expect victory or defeat. We recognize that it is the sovereign right of the people to decide what kind of government they want. This is the challenge of democracy. Our party believes that there was and still is need for change in Ondo State. Thus, our party will study carefully the general details of the results with a view to taking a final position.

“Our party has always been and remains proud of our candidate, Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, and this election has reinforced our confidence in his ability to lead and stimulate life back into the Action Congress of Nigeria in Ondo State. Through him, our party will continue to express gratitude to the leadership and general members of our party and to the electorate of Ondo State in general. We are glad that they performed that brilliantly in spite of many challenges, glaring lapses in the system and institutional inefficiency in the conduct of Ondo state governorship election.

“I must congratulate our teeming members in Ondo state for their hard work at resuscitating the party and putting it in a position of reckoning in such a short time.

“Our party will continue this post mortem analysis of the lapses in all the institutions involved in the conduct of the Ondo election.”

The PDP candidate, Oke, however, differed with the national party in his assessment of the election which he described as heavily flawed.

Speaking through the Director General of the Olusola Oke/Saka Lawal Campaign Organisation, Dr. Dare Bada at a press conference in Akure yesterday, he accused INEC of undersupplying his strongholds of election materials.

He alleged that there was concentration of troops and heavy security presence in urban centres thereby leaving the rural areas unprotected, saying this gave room for malpractices in the rural areas.

“It is regrettable, shameful and disgraceful to our country. It is and will remain unacceptable to us as a political party and as stakeholders.

“Accordingly, we reject it and call for a total overhauling of the office of INEC in Ondo state as well as the State Command of the SSS, Police and the entire Army and Naval operations in the state”.

The Centre for Human Rights and Ethics in Development (CHRED) and the Conference of Human Rights Activists (CNCRA), however, disagreed saying the results were reflective of the wishes of the people.

In a preliminary report on its observation of the election by the Executive Director of CHRED, Moshood Erubami, the body said that” voting was conducted smoothly and peacefully across the state.

“No serious problems emerged in the true sense of violent ridden election that we have ever witnessed in the country and in Ondo state history itself, the counting of votes and declaration of results were not tainted with any significant irregularities and delays in vote collation in some polling stations were due to difficult terrains of some polling stations like the riverrine and the late closing of accreditation and voting in some”.

A statement by the State Convener of CNCRA Ifeanyi Odili said, “The election had come and gone and it was free and fair, devoid of election malpractices. Anybody who says the election was not free and fair must be marking him or herself.”

Mimiko pledges

Addressing hundreds of party supporters who trooped to the Government House at Alagbaka to rejoice with him on his electoral victory, Dr. Mimiko said he was dedicating the victory to all lovers of democracy across the globe.

See how Mimiko won the election here

He pointed out that the poll conduct had raised the hope of a better future for the country. The governor urged his fellow contestants to join hands with him in the great task of building the state to an enviable status among its peers not only in the country but in the world at large.

Dr Mimiko pledged to work harder more than ever before in appreciation of the show of love and great support extended to him by the electorate both young and old, who defied the scorching sun on Saturday, to cast their votes for him.

“I commend every resident of our dear great state for counting me worthy of leading them as governor for another four years. I promise to break the jinx of non-performing second term governors by ensuring that we complete all on-going projects and initiate new ones for the benefit of our people.

“There will be more markets, job opportunities, mega schools, quality healthcare, favourable environment for commerce and trade. I will continue to work for you. I will not disappoint you. I will not let you down but please let all of us sustain the peace that we are all enjoying in the state by shunning any form of violence”.

Also the National Chairman of the Labour Party, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu said Mimiko’s victory at the poll had established the fact that the LP had done well for the people of Ondo in the last three and half years.

Members of the National Assembly, the state lawmakers, commissioners, other political office holders and members of the public were equally present at the re election celebration.

Information commissioner Mr. Kayode Akinmade, said the results of the election had shown that the people of the state would not allow a foreigner to dictate to them, their leader.

Akinmade: “The agent of foreign god had been defeated in the state for good. The governor had promised to consolidate on his achievements in the last three and half years.”

Daniel’s reaction

The former Governor of Ogun State Otunba Gbenga Daniel also described the victory of Dr Mimiko as a reaffirmation of the confidence earlier reposed in him by the people of Ondo State. He said the well deserved victory was a triumph for the rule of law and principle of one man one vote. “This is a victory that underscores the fact that the voice of the people is more resounding and would ultimately be triumphant no matter the odds.”

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC on its part said the result was a triumph of service over posturing and grandstanding.

The congress in a statement jointly signed by its President-General and Secretary, Comrade Peter Esele and Chief John Kolawole, respectively declared that Mimiko’s victory was one for Nigerian workers.

“We saw the record clearly written on the roads, the Schools, the medical facilities and specifically, the wages of workers in the State. These have all spoken through the ballot and we are all in rejoicing mood. We rejoice with Ondo people for speaking massively through the ballot yesterday in favour of the man who has served them solidly and unwaveringly these past years.

“We call on Mimiko to see his re-election as a renewed mandate from Ondo people and workers to even do more for the total transformation of the State.”

Indigenes of Ondo State in Ogun, under the aegis of Oka-Akoko Progressive union equally hailed the victory of Governor Mimiko as a victory-well deserved.
