Look at it this way, it was a win win situation for the SE and SS. We were ready to pay whatever price increase there was so no need for protest. If the yorubas and some northerners whated to protest and bring down the price we are cool with that too. Let them do all the hard work for once. Thanks for the hard work guys. We get to sit back and enjoy the low price that you all fought for. ![]() |

. . .S’East, S’South leaders warn against military coup From GODWIN TSA, Abuja Friday January 13, 2012 The Elders and Leaders of the South-East and the South-South have warned against any undemocratic attempt to overthrow the government of President Goodluck Jonathan in the wake of the sustained nation-wide strike over the removal of fuel subsidy. The group alleged that the current protest against the removal of fuel subsidy is a smokescreen to perfect the ploy to make the country ungovernable for Mr. President. This has been a promise made publicly, by some politicians who lost out during the last presidential election. Led by elder statesman, Chief Edwin Clark, the forum however urged the Federal Government to start considering the idea of convening a national conference which it said would offer the component units of the country an opportunity to discuss solution to the fragile unity of Nigeria. Clark, in a press conference after the South-South elders meeting, in Abuja, said all Nigerians are equal since Nigeria was founded on equal federating units, a reason he said the south-south condemned the turn of events in which a section of Nigeria, most especially the north feels that it owns Nigeria more than the other sections of the country. He said the recent development in Nigeria with the menace of Boko Haram and the threat to the government of the day by some faceless cabal have necessitated the convocation of a Sovereign National Conference for Nigerians to determine whether or not they want Nigeria to remain as a nation or face a break up. In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the forum condemned in its entirety what it described as unprovoked killings and destruction of property and the ultimatum given to Christians and southerners to leave the northern parts of Nigeria as this is against the spirit, content and intent of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.“That in the event the present crisis degenerates to a point of unmanageable catastrophe as that is clearly the intention of the patrons and sponsors of the present imbroglio, we wish to state unequivocally that no section of this country can escape the ugly outcome of the ensuing crisis as it would do no one any good. It is their resolve that “if any part of the country feels that it is time for us to rethink the basis of our unity as a country, we wish to state our preparedness to sit with other Nigerians to renegotiate the basis of our continued existence as a country. “That we wish to remind Mr. President of the sacred constitutional duty of protection of lives and property he swore to uphold and call on him to take every necessary step to safeguard the lives of all Nigerians who in the belief of one united Nigeria are merely seeking means of livelihood in parts of the country other than their home states. “That while we commend the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for the continued maintenance of peace and security in the country, we hereby state unequivocally that any attempt at undemocratic change in the country will be fully resisted. Any such perpetrator shall have no country to preside over.“That we appeal to organized labour, civil society groups and government to embrace dialogue to bring the current pains of Nigerians to an end as soon as possible.” http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2012/jan/13/national-13-01-2011-002.html |

NLC names spot after victim of Ilorin protest Thursday, 12 January 2012 00:00 From Abiodun Fagbemi, Ilorin THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday named the popular Ilorin Post Office Roundabout after Muiydeen Mustapha, the 23-year-old man, who last week became the first victim of the on-going protest against fuel subsidy removal. Chairman of the NLC in Kwara State, Farouk Akanbi, who represented the National President of the NLC, AbdulWaheed Omar, at the event, justified the naming of the place after Mustapha, citing the spot where the man was killed. He declared: “As from today, we declare that this place is now Muiydeen Mustapha Freedom Square”. Mustapha died following the spontaneous reaction that trailed the removal of the fuel subsidy. While some of the protesters had alleged that the police fired shots at the man, the state Police Commissioner, Peter Gana, said the police met the body at the spot. The state Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed has ordered a probe into the death. Also, the immediate past governor of Kwara State, Senator Bukola Saraki, has canvassed a reversal to the N65 price of fuel in order for the Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to negotiate. The NLC leaders yesterday called Islamic, Christian and traditional leaders to pray against what they called, “egocentric, rigid and stubborn Nigerian leaders”. The prayer was held at the roundabout for hours as the routes leading to the highbrow location were barricaded with women openly shedding tears for the deceased. Also, youths at Adeta area in the heart of Ilorin took to the streets in the early hours of yesterday in a protest against the subsidy removal. They prevented motorists from moving. The protesters pledged the continuity of the protest until the reversal of the policy on the premium motor spirit (PMS) was effected. According to Saraki, who is the senator representing Kwara-Central Senatorial District, yesterday in a statement issued on his behalf by his personal aide on media, Akintoba Fatigun, the two major players in the imbroglio should embrace truce, go to the negotiation table and come with an acceptable solution on the issue. He said the proposition would save the nation from the on-going wanton destruction of lives and property trailing the oil subsidy removal. He added that his position should not, however, be seen as preventing the probe of those identified as being responsible for illegally benefiting from the subsidy granted by successive past governments in Nigeria. Saraki also canvassed dialogue as the panacea to the problem of terrorism facing the nation. His words: “The mood of the country requires that we find a solution to the fuel subsidy dispute, which has pitted the Federal Government against NLC, civil society and the citizens. It is my candid opinion that all parties involved are driven by patriotism. There is a mutual agreement that there is something wrong with the fuel subsidy scheme. “As you are probably aware, a few months ago, I raised a motion on the floor of the Senate concerning the potential dangers of the management of the fuel subsidy scheme and the effects it could have on the economy and development of our dear nation. “I had no doubts that the subsidy scheme was not working as envisaged and obviously was not serving the interest of the masses for whom it was put in place. I knew we had to investigate why we spend so much on the scheme, in order to determine if it was being abused and identify the culprits responsible for this and allow the law to take its full course. Based on what is happening today, peace and stability of our country is what is paramount considering the loss of lives”. He continued: “My humble advice to the Federal Government of Nigeria and all parties involved at this critical moment is for everyone to return to the position before the dispute, which is a standard practice for all industrial dispute resolution all over the world. This is necessary to enable resolution on the matter. I believe that the Senate’s current role as an arbitrator between the Federal Government and organised Labour is the right one, which is to find a meeting point for a peaceful resolution to this strike. “As representatives of the people, we are elected to serve; we must hearken to the anguish, feel the pains of the people and also provide support for the Federal Government. So, the government should shift ground and Labour the same, this will create room for dialogue. To revert to the previous position by all parties is not a sign of weakness but an act of sacrifice in the interest of all, anything to prevent further loss of lives. There are times in the history of our nation where empathy supersedes economics; this is one of those moments. http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=73605:nlc-names-spot-after-victim-of-ilorin-protest&catid=1:national&Itemid=559 |
Foreign airlines suspend operations to Nigeria over strike Thursday, 12 January 2012 00:00 By Wole Shadare News - National FOLLOWING the on-going nationwide strike, some foreign airlines may have suspended operations in the country pending when the crisis is resolved. Already, KLM Airlines said it had stopped operations to Nigeria because it could no longer guarantee the safety of its crew and equipment. Spokesman for Air France-KLM, Mrs. Funmi Ojesina in a chat with The Guardian said that the carrier had suspended operations for now until safety could be guaranteed. Also, Lufthansa which had earlier suspended its operations on Tuesday said, “we expect flight operations to restart on Thursday (today). That is outbound leaving each from Lagos and Abuja to Frankfurt. For inbound, we expect flights to come in by tomorrow. A source who pleaded anonymity said the airlines were equally concerned with the quality of air traffic control that is being handled by insufficient workers and could not risk the consequence of an accident. They may have taken the decision on the heels of the attack of Ethiopian Airways crew on Tuesday as they were turned back to their hotels, leading to cancellation of the flight. For British Airways, the airline was unable to operate its 10 a.m. flight to London from Abuja until midnight, while its Lagos operations went on smoothly because the airline operated at 12 midnight, beating the 7a.m. to 7p.m. that the airports in Lagos and Abuja are closed to traffic. Country Manager, British Airways, Mr. Kola Olayinka said most of their passengers are lodged in hotels in Abuja, adding that the strike was taking enormous toll on their operations. Spokesperson for Virgin Atlantic Airways, Mrs. Wuraola Oduntan said protesters got into the terminal building of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos and stopped all the airlines’ staff from checking-in their passengers. Just like on Tuesday, the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos was deserted. Save for few passengers that turned up for their flights which never operated, the airport was devoid of its usual bustle and hustle nature. Virgin Atlantic Airways, Emirates, Arik Air, Ethiopian, Air France and KLM which hitherto thought they would be allowed to operate, were disappointed when the industry unions prevented them from checking in passengers for flights outside the country. http://www.guardiannewsngr.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=73599:foreign-airlines-suspend-operations-to-nigeria-over-strike&catid=1:national&Itemid=559 |
Tension over 61 Hausa youths in Ibadan • Residents claimed they were Boko Haram • They are not Boko Haram - Police Written by Adebayo Waheed and David Chukwunede Thursday, 12 January 2012 Share THERE was a heightening of the tension in Ibadan Tuesday night, following the discovery of 61 Hausa men concealedin a van. The fear of Boko Haram made those who discovered them raised the alarm which attracted attention. The suspects were arrested at Olusanya, Ring Road by some protesters during the ongoing nationwide strike. Nigerian Tribune learnt, on Wednesday, that the suspects were loaded in a van with registration number YB 232 KLT (Gombe). An eyewitness told the Nigerian Tribune that the suspects were led by some people inside a Black Jeep. On getting to Olusanya, the occupants of the Jeep were said to have opened fire to scare away the protesters. But the protesters were adamant as they blocked the vehicle which conveyed the suspects. The driver of the van, it was gathered, initially told the protesters that there was no one in the bus. When the protesters forced the door of the vehicle open, they discovered 61 young man who were from the northern part of the country. One of them, Shehu Maida, who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune, said they were coming from Benin and they were on their way to Gombe State. Maida who claimed to be a pepper seller at Sasa, Ibadan, Oyo State, said that he met them at Ogere, Ogun State and that he was only trying to assist them. According to him, the suspects were coming from Benin but suspects did not the know the road to Gombe. “I have my business in Ibadan. I don’t know them and they don’t know me. They are coming from Benin on their way to Gombe State,” he said. Nigerian Tribune learnt that the prompt arrival of policemen saved the situation as the protesters threatened to attack them. They were, however, taken to Orita Challenge Police Division for interrogation. But in a swift reaction, the Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Femi Okanlawon, said that those arrested were not Boko Haram. He confirmed that only 46 of the Hausa people were arrested and that they were only trying to escape from the troubled Benin. “There is no Boko Haram in Oyo State, those allegedly arrested by the hoodlums fled from Benin as a result of the religions crisis in Benin. They are trying to flee,” he said. Meanwhile, as the nationwide strike declared by Nigeria Labour Congress enters its third day, policemen in Oyo State have arrested some hoodlums for allegedly hijacking the protest. The PPRO told the Nigerian Tribune that some of the hoodlums who attempted to burn two police stations in the state capital had been arrested. He confirmed that the miscreants had on Monday vandalised NEPA installations. http://tribune.com.ng/index.php/news/34223-tension-over-61-hausa-youths-in-ibadan--residents-claimed-they-were-boko-haram--they-are-not-boko-haram-police |
Name, prosecute sponsors, Mark tells Jonathan Killings of Igbo: S’ East lawmakers seek UN’s protection From ADETUTU FOLASADE-KOYI, Abuja Thursday, January 12, 2012 Senate President David Mark has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to name and prosecute sponsors of the Boko Haram sect whose activities have wreaked havoc and triggered mass killings in the North. The Senate president warned that the country might soon slide into Nigeria of 1966 if the present insecurity was not addressed, adding that “no nation can ever survive two civil wars.” Senator Mark said his colleagues were ready to offer their lives for the progress of Nigeria, adding that the text messages threatening lawmakers would not deter them from seeking solutions to the problems in the country. “I know that when it comes to the issues of Boko Haram, people have been very scared of sticking out their necks in making comments. But today, we have broken that jinx and because we have been able to speak out, I hope that other well-meaning Nigerians, highly placed Nigerians will join us in condemning in its totality, the existence and the operations of Boko Haram in this country. “Whatever it is, it does not portray Nigerians as we are. Nigerians are peace-loving people. We love ourselves and we love our neighbours. This idea is absolutely foreign to us; it does not represent us and we hope that it will stop. “All the time, we talk as if its only (the) Federal Government that exists; there are three tiers of government in this country and if a local community can manage their own vigilance and security it will be very helpful. “We have terrorism and insurgency in our hands and if we don’t handle them properly, they will get out of control. We must do everything humanly possible; starting with the communities, local governments, state level and to the federal level to make sure that we tackle this and nip them at the bud now before it gets out of control. “We must not allow history to repeat itself. What is happening now is beginning to give an impression of 1966. It must never happen again. No nation would survive two civil wars and we must never allow ourselves to degenerate to that level. “I know that so many of us received these text messages. It has nothing to do with religion because all the clerics of both Christians and Muslims have condemned the acts of these terrorists or people who are their sponsors. They are people who are prepare to destabilize this country but they will not succeed and the only way they will not succeed is when we all play our roles, security agents and the ordinary man on the streets. “We should not because things have gone wrong and say that this is a good reason for what is happening now to happen. It is never a good reason for the level of insecurity that we have found ourselves today. “All tiers of government must sit up and make sure that we nip the current situation in the bud because we cannot afford it. I want to say and I believe that I am right, no special group targeted deliberately. Those who are doing it are just miscreants, misguided Nigerians who are being sponsored. “If government says it knows those behind it, they should fish them out and deal with them. Any Nigerian sponsoring insecurity should be fished out and dealt with accordingly.” Senator Chris Anyanwu upped the ante, detailing the bias of the Federal Government in citing of projects in the geo-political zones. “Let’s call a spade a spade; there’s inequity in this nation. Even as we speak, the Federal Government has said it will invest in three refineries while two states in the South-east have oil, yet, the Federal Government is not building any refinery in the South-east. “The government must tell Boko Haram that they won’t tolerate ethnic cleansing in the guise of being disgruntled. If need be, we can call on foreign security agencies to aid us, to assist us…” Chukwumerije corroborated Anyanwu with a threat to approach the United Nations to protect Igbos in Nigeria. “There should be a drastic overhaul of our security agencies. We are very, very prepared to work with everyone to advance Project Nigeria. “We are tired of being the sacrificial lamb of Nigeria. We are going to prepare a resolution to the United Nations that they should protect us, that we are the sacrificial race,” said Chukwumerije. Senators, however, rebuffed moves to compel the Federal Government to adequately compensate victims of the Madalla bomb blast and the bereaved as well as those who suffered the same fate in other places. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2012/jan/12/national-12-01-2012-020.html |
Niger burns as protesters torch IBB campaign office •Policeman killed, curfew imposed From AKIN ALOFETEKUN, Minna Thursday, January 12, 2012 Protesters mostly youths yesterday took the on-going nation-wide strike against fuel subsidy removal to a frightening level when they burnt buildings belonging to Niger State Government and influential indigenes. A policeman died when the dust settled. Former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida’s (IBB) campaign headquarters on Mobil Roundabout, State Development Company and INEC office, were torched. Their action was in response to a broadcast by the state’s Head of Service (HOS), Ibrahim Matane, directing civil servants to return to work. According to the protesters, “it was wrong of the Head of Service to direct people to go to work. We are not going to allow anybody to go to work until when Jonathan reverts the pump price of N65 per litre of petrol.” The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and civil society groups had last week ordered a nation-wide strike in protest against the Federal Government’s hike of petrol price from N65 to about N145 per litre effective from January 1, 2012. Transport fares went up by 150 per cent. The strike and protests, which started on January 9 and grounded the country, were adjudged successful by organized Labour. But in venting their anger against the Niger State government yesterday, protesters went on a burning spree. Also torched was the glass house of the legal firm of Tanko Beji, Deputy Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state and the constituency office of Hon. Jummai Jafaru of the State House of Assembly, along Bosso Road were vandalized. About 30 vehicles were burnt, 10 of them were torched at the premises of INEC and eight at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and the rest at the old secretariat in Minna. The tensed situation in the state capital, Minna, had earlier compelled the state government to call for soldiers to take over some strategic areas. Military personnel were also deployed in the Government House, while the major roads leading to the governor’s residence were manned by a combined team of soldiers, policemen and State Security Service (SSS). In what looked like an organized action, youths in various sections of the town as early as 8:00 a. m. gathered, blocking major roads in their areas, while another group gathered at Mobil, the heart of the state capital, setting fire on the road before descending and attempted setting the Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu Campaign Secretariat on fire. But for the intervention of policemen dispatched to the area, who quickly mobilized to put the fire under check, the governor’s campaign office would have been engulfed by the fire set by the hoodlums. The police officer, who got injured in the course of putting out the fire, later died. The hoodlums also invaded a popular privately-owned bakery in Tunga area, carting away all the loaves of bread and pastry before vandalizing the bakery. The residence of Senator Dahiru Awaisu Kuta, Chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Character, was spared by the timely intervention of his neighbours, but two cars and a motorcycle parked in front of the house were not lucky, the fireworks of the irate mob reduced them to ashes. The irate youths also destroyed the on-going beautification project at Onigbinde Roundabout, while some cars were also allegedly destroyed at Kpakungu area of the town by the youths, accusing their victims of not staying in their houses. At about 11a.m, gunshots were heard along the Bosso Road- a stone’s throw to the Government House. There were gunshots in Chanchaga and Kpakungu areas of the state capital. The hoodlums also barred people from moving around, insisting that the residents should stay indoors, while those who have shops in their neighbourhood were issued with threats of vandalizing the shops if they were not closed. It was gathered that the development stalled the state executive council meeting scheduled to hold at the Government House, as the hoodlums have seized all the major roads leading to the seat of government. Meanwhile, the state government has condemned the wanton destruction of public and private structures, waste bins and beautification trees by miscreants who exploited the ongoing fuel subsidy protests called by Labour, describing the action as irresponsible. A statement by the Commissioner for the Environment and Solid Minerals Development, Abubakar Baba Jibreel, said government was shocked at the barbaric act considering the fact that the structures destroyed were put in place for the beautification of the environment and the promotion of public health. He blamed the state NLC for the rampage. But the state chairman of NLC, Comrade Yahaya Ndako, disassociated the congress from the activities of the hoodlums. In a telephone interview, Ndako said he was going to Radio Niger to appeal to the people. “The congress is not and cannot support the wanton destruction going on now in the state capital. We are not party to it. Our action was and is still a peaceful protest and not looting, burning and destruction of public and private properties,” Ndako told our correspondent. Meanwhile, the state government yesterday declared a 24-hour curfew on all the 25 local government headquarters. In a statement signed by Daniel Shashere, Secretary to the Niger State Government (SSG), government lamented that the protest by organized labour and civil societies which started peacefully on Monday, ‘has been hijacked by miscreants and hoodlums’ who have taken laws into their hands by creating bonfires on the streets of Minna, torching public and private properties. According to Shashere, “government has a responsibility to protect lives and property, warning citizens to stay indoors until further notice. “Nigerlites should regard this as a critical measure necessary to curtail further wanton lawlessness by unscrupulous elements in the society.” http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2012/jan/12/national-12-01-2012-001.html |

Subsidy Removal: Catholic priests, lawyers, others join protest in Enugu On January 11, 2012 · In News | 12:45 am BY CHINENYEH OZOR ENUGU – Catholic priests, lawyers and civil society organisations in Nsukka, yesterday, defied ban on rallies by Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State and protested against the increase in pump price of petrol from N65 to N141 by the Federal Government. The demonstrators took to the streets in trucks, tippers and horses, denouncing the hardship inflicted on the masses by the President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration, even as banks and public schools remained closed. Also, thousands of market women, who were unable to join their colleagues during the protest, converged at the St Theresa’s Catholic Cathedral to pray for “Nigeria in distress’’ just as other demonstrators carried placards with different inscriptions denouncing the new petrol price, thus bringing economic activities in the area to a standstill. Addressing the demonstrators at St. John’s Parish, Ugwuoye, Nsukka, Director, National Human Rights Corps, Mr Jonathan Ogbuka, said the new increase in pump price of petrol had shown that the government was not bothered about the welfare of its citizens, as it amounted to burying them alive. Ogbuka noted that President Jonathan should first of all reduce the huge expenditure by the government to maintain the presidency, adding that it was inhuman for Jonathan to spend N1billion on food alone this year apart from the billions budgeted for security, while the masses walloped in abject poverty. The Police Area Commander, Nsukka, Mohamed Lawal and the Divisional Police Officer, Mr Jacob Muri followed the protesters from the beginning till about 5pm to ensure that the peaceful procession was not hijacked by hoodlums. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2012/01/subsidy-removal-catholic-priests-lawyers-others-join-protest-in-enugu/ |
I think the protest should also be declared on Reno Omokri's facebook pages. What do you think Beaf? |
