OPC protest unnecessary –Northern youths, Ezeife, others •It’s in order –Osoba By WILY EYA and OMONIYI SALAUDEEN Sunday, December 11, 2011 Diverse interest groups in the country have reacted to Thursday’s anti-Boko Haram protest in Lagos by the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) against any violent attack on the Southwest region. Tthe group led by its founder, Fredrick Fasehun, took to the streets with gun-wielding youths calling on the dreaded Boko Haram to steer clear of the region. But president of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Alhaji Shetiima Yerima, in an interview with Sunday Sun, said the act of the OPC was unnecessary, as it was capable of heightening the tension in the country. According to him, the group should have made its position on the threatening security challenge known to the government rather than organizing a protest that could be hijacked by unscrupulous elements in the society to perpetrate their criminal activities. His words: “I do not know exactly what informed the protest. But for me, the protest was unnecessary because already there is tension in the country. Besides, we all know that that some people have been taken undue advantage of the Boko Haram to perpetrate their criminal acts. I think what they have done was to make their position on the security situation in the country known to the government rather than taking to the street and causing more tension in the land.” The aftermath of the protest, he noted, was already causing apprehension within the Hausa communities in Lagos. “Since they staged the protest, I have been inundated with several calls from northern leaders expressing worries over the safety of Hausa communities in the South West. But because of our good relationship with OPC, I have spoken extensively with Dr. Fredrick Fasehun and he assured me that the intension was not to attack any tribe in the region.” Speaking in the same vein, a former governor of old Anambra State, Dr Chukwuemeka Ezeife, said though the protest was not out of place, it could heighten tension in the land. “Everybody is on the edge because of the attitude of Boko Haram . So, I don’t blame anybody for coming out loud to issue such a warning threat, especially when you have evidence of possibility of their coming to attack people in the South West. The only thing is that it could heighten fear among the people when you hear such warning. To that extent, it is dangerous. But I am sure; they are not reacting for nothing. When you see people who are not wishing you well, you have to warn them from a reasonable distance not to move near you.” On his part, Secretary-General of Aka Ikenga, an Igbo socio-cultural group, Goddy Uwazuruike, described as treasonable any action that is capable of undermining national security. “The OPC has a right of assembly and right of holding views. But if there is violence and threat to national security, it is treason. Boko Haram carrying out violence and threatening national security is treasonable. Nobody has a right to unlawfully carry arms in Nigeria and I do not support that even if everybody or group has a right to assembly and free speech.” However, former Ogun State Governor, Segun Osoba, expressing a divergent view, argued that there was nothing wrong in what the OPC did to protect the interest of the Yoruba. “They were merely exercising their rights to protect their community. In Yoruba, every family has members of Islamic faith and Christians. So, turning religious issue to violence is unacceptable in Yoruba land. Government should find way of talking to them as they did to the militants. And, of course, government has a lot of channels through which it can solve the problem,” he said. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2011/dec/11/national-11-12-2011-008.html |

WE WILL KILL ALL MUSLIMS IN NIGER DELTA-MILITANT GROUP WARNS 08/12/2011 13:14:00 A militant group in Niger Delta, Joint Revolutionary Council, JRC, has threatened to kill all Muslims living in Niger Delta States as retaliation to the series of bombing and killing of southerners in the North by members of the Boko Haram Sect. The group issued the threat today in a statement sent to Pointblanknews.com warning that there will be no going back on its decision. Only yesterday, a bomb blast killed 14 persons and injured several others at Ogbomoso, by Katsina Road, Kaduna, Kaduna State, Northwest Nigeria. The bomb blast, according to witnesses was carried out by two suspected bombers alleged to be members of the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram. “The continuous killings of Christians in the North are unbearable to us now. Boko Haram has been leaving bombs around churches and other places with clusters of the innocent,” the group said in a statement. “why all these killings of innocent Niger Deltans? With this trend, we can’t leave together. Leave Niger Delta now!!! Your failure to leave…, we’ll start to kill any MUSLIM WE SEE IN THE NIGER DELTA REGION full stop and no going back,” the group warned in the statement by the Joint Revolutionary Council. The group said “No section of this country is an embodiment of killing others. Muslims can’t live in our land freely (Niger Delta) while BOKO HARAM will be killing our people in their land. This is our message, If you like stay and test our ultimatum and see what will happen.” we are fully ready to kill if Muslims test us. What happened in Warri today is minor and we shall continue more if they don't leave our land. Every Muslim should leave now or BLOOD.” we have tasted blood war during the days of our agitation for equal right. These Boko Haram live among you and pray in the same mosque. So you can’t claim that you don’t know where the Boko Haram is.” Every Niger Delta to return home as our message will be implemented without hesitation. And any person or individual that make inflammatory statement against us will be dealt with.” http://pointblanknews.com/new/exclusive/3240-we-will-kill-all-muslims-in-niger-delta-militant-group-warns.html |

Igbo in Jos declare seven-day mourning for Ojukwu By Kolade Adeyemi, Kano 4 hours ago The Igbo in Jos have declared a seven-day mourning for the late Ikemba Nnewi, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu. They have also opened a condolence register at the Eze Igbo Palace for sympathisers. In a statement by the community, the Eze Igbo Jos, Prof Joseph Obilom, said: “All Igbo in Jos are to fast and pray for the repose of Ojukwu’s soul, starting from Monday.” Prof. Obilom described Ojukwu as the father of the new concept of Nigeria because he fought for equality and fairness among the country’s entities. The Eze Igbo asked all Igbo to come to his palace and sign the condolence register in honour of Ojukwu who, according to him, epitomized Nigeria’s unity. http://www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/index.php/news/29263-igbo-in-jos-declare-seven-day-mourning-for-ojukwu.html |

We’re not northerners- Middle-Belt youths On December 9, 2011 · In News By Dapo Akinrefon & Charles Kumolu United Middle-Belt Youth Congress, UMYC, has demanded a separate identity for the people of the region to differentiate them from the Hausa-Fulani and Kanuri peoples of the far North. Leading a delegation of executive officers of the congress on a courtesy call to Vanguard’s corporate office in Lagos, the group’s President, Mr. Abuka Onalo, said the people of the Middle-Belt were now remorseful of their roles in past actions of spearhea-ding Northern interests that did not benefit their people. He particularly regretted the role of the Middle-Belt in the Nigerian civil war, saying the people of the region would not repeat the mistake. He said: “We want the Middle-Belt people to be recognised and be referred to as Middle-Belt region. We want to be part of a new Nigeria where the Middle-Belt will be a federating unit. “We likened our argument to the issue of true federalism. Since the South-South has been officially re-grouped as the Niger Delta region, we from the Middle-Belt should be grouped as the Middle-Belt region. “We have never been subdued. We contributed in establishing the Federal Republic of Nigeria; we know what we suffered after the Civil War. There should be no reason why the nation cannot give us our own identity.” In canvassing for identity, we are careful so that we do not destabilise what we helped in creating.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/12/were-not-northerners-middle-belt-youths/ |
