LaBellaMafiaZA: It's not as bad as portrayed in the media. Yes, we have crime but which country is free of criminals or criminal activity? Nigerians get treated the same way Ethiopians, Somalis etc get treated...with indifference for the most part. Most South Africans can't differentiate between a Ghanaian, Nigerian, Tanzanian etc until someone actually states where exactly they are from.
I remember when we 1st welcomed foreigners into the country, the 1st were the Zimbabweans & we didn't know who they were or where they were coming from so we called them Ghanaians for whatever reason. All African foreign nationals were referred to as Ghanaians until recently because some are now able to tell the difference between people from different African countries. However, now that we have more Nigerians in the country, everyone who is not South African is a Nigerian in our eyes...whether they are actually from Nigeria or not. This is more highlighted with the older South Africans though. Example, my aunt calls the Somalis running a shop in her "hood", Nigerians. But younger people can tell apart a Somali & an Ethiopian from the rest. It's only difficult when it comes to telling apart the rest ie. Ghana, Nigeria, DRC etc. Remember, we're still new to having "other" people in the country so it is going to take some time & a lot of getting used to. quite insightful. |

LaBellaMafiaZA: Us calling our country Mzansi is not a new thing. Mzansi simply means South in the Nguni languages (Zulu, Xhosa, Swati & Ndebele). The Nguni are the largest group hence the popularity in language.
In SA even Townships have nicknames eg. Meadowlands = Ndofaya etc. So it's not only the country that has a nickname. wud luv to visit mzansi but am scared. Too many crime stories from thr plus I heard they don't lyk Nigerians |

Safarigurl: no, I don't hate Ghana. I just dislike Kaycey Moore like hell. This is about Kaycey, not Ghana, but feel free to make it about Ghana
Yes, I learnt that there's no point in two west africans reaching finals from last year. What did you learn? The way Kaycee Moore has fallen for tht go-go eyes just make me tire for the Obiomah. And in his mind he is forming watching over her. He has even abandoned his country girl. Makes me admire Tayo even more, cos when Sheila wanted to mess with his head, he smelled d rat immediately and stuck to those he cud trust, twerkie nd small pepper. Now that those 2 r gone, he is getting close to the next best thing, mam bea. #tayoNaManJor |

I am learning it because I do find it fascinating to say the least. I work at a library but can't seem to find any books on Pidgin.
