For those who don't know, Ig Nobel prizes parody the actual Nobel prizes for the most trivial scientific achievements in the world. Thursday night therefore saw researchers, professors, students, and real Nobel prize winners from across the globe, who came together to celebrate the 25th First Annual Ig Nobel Prize Ceremony at Harvard University. Those among the honoured were chemists who successfully unboiled an egg; mathematicians who pondered if a man could birth 600 sons; and a man who was stung dozens of times by bees. Entomologist Justin Schmidt and researcher Michael Smith jointly won an Ig for experimenting how painful insect stings can be and the places where they'd hurt the most. Their findings - nostril, upper lip, and the shaft of a penis. Other Ig laureates included investigators who wished to know the limit of the human body, explorers who delved deeper into the sexual expertise of a 17th-century Moroccan emperor, and others who wished to know the various benefits of intense kissing. From the US and Taiwan, a group of physicists won the award for "the law of urination". Science was not the only realm that hogged the limelight. In literature, three researchers won for discovering the existence of the word 'huh' or its equivalent in every human language there is. http://www.indiatimes.com/news/world/unboiling-an-egg-and-other-useless-achievements-that-were-awarded-at-the-ig-nobel-awards-2015_-245342.html cc: seun; lalasticlala; obinoscopy

People like to describe rough, tough traditional 4x4s using terms like ‘bullet-proof’ and even ‘bomb-proof.’ Normally, of course, you wouldn’t want to take that too literally. But you would in the Range Rover Sentinel. A version of the Autobiography model, it’s been worked over by Jag Land Rover’s SVO operation – and now you can lay into it with guns, grenades, armour-piercing incendiary rounds or 15 kilos of TNT without laying a finger on the people inside. It’ll shrug off the less direct approach, too, with a self-sealing petrol tank and anti-tamper exhaust. There’s a fire-suppression system under the bonnet, and you can communicate with those outside via a loudspeaker – or, if all you want them to do is get out of your way, a siren. Split-charge electrics juiced by twin batteries mean you’re that much less likely to be stranded in the firing line, and the 20” split-rim wheels will let you keep on driving even if the rubberware around them has been blown to smithereens. The Sentinel’s passenger compartment is cloaked in six-piece armour, and the windows are blacked out and, obviously, bullet-proof. Helping you leg it from danger is a new engine to the Range Rover line-up, in the shape of the 335bhp 3.0-litre supercharged V6 engine from the Jaguar F-Type. The ZF eight-speed auto box, on the other hand, is anything but new in this vehicle. How much does this all cost? Well, how much is your life worth? If the answer is ‘less than €400,000 (around £295,000),’ you won’t be buying one. That figure doesn’t just buy you a car, because it also includes specialised training for your chauffeur and once-a-year maintenance visits by Land Rover technicians. They’ll have a way to go in most cases, because Land Rover expects most sales to come from abroad. They’ve obviously seen how it gets in Paris at rush hour. http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/motoring/motoring-news/sale-300000-range-rover-can-10060699 cc: lalasticlala; seun; ishilove

The book rich dad poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki is very inspiring. Not only that it was written in simple forms and was based on real life stories of the author, it is a small book, very concise and I regret not reading it until recently even though I have known about the book since I was an undergraduate. I was drawn to read the book because I was looking for answers. Let me digress a bit and tell you a little about myself. I graduated at the age of 21 in 2007 with a second class upper division and by all standards that was a good one. Young, intelligent and energetic I look out to life with optimism. I believe that all things were possible for those believe and are really ready to work. Before I forget, I even got a state Honours award during my service years in Jigawa State in 2009. That should be enough for now. Fast forward to the present day, I am now 29, working in a bank. Yes I have an annual salary of over NGN 3Million which many will agree with me is not bad. But do you know what, before the next pay day I am damn broke. Really broke. I am not extravagant, neither do I spend ostentatiously. You may wonder where all what I earn goes, family - my siblings school fees, pocket money, parents’ upkeep, rents etc. I believe many people are also in this same loop. I got tired of this rat race and I my quest for answers I decided to give myself some financial education. Questions like how do I make more money? How can I achieve financial freedom? Can I ever be rich if things continue like this? Is my problem due to the Nigerian economic landscape? – But there are a lot of young people making good money in the same geographical location. The difference then is that they know some things that I don’t know. This led to my quest for financial education. For ease of reference and for the purpose I intend to achieve, I will itemize the lessons I learnt from reading the book. 1. Your thought pattern helps to shape your life: We are what we constantly think about. Thoughts are like seeds planted into our subconscious mind. And going by the law of nature, you reap whatever you sow therefore, it also true that whatsoever is impressed on your mind will express itself on the physical plane. (Read the Millionaire Mindset by Gerry Robert). 2. Rich people associate with rich people: Life is about class. Even from our primary school days, we should have observed that people with similar characteristics are drawn towards each other. Hence as elementary as it may seem then cliques are formed. So also it is when it comes to the issues of wealth. I believe Dangote, Otedola, Adenuga, Jim Ovia etc may not have the same root by birth or education. But they are friends now. Why? Because they are all wealthy. In the same vein poor people associate with poor people unconsciously. You should know who you associate with. 3. To be rich you have to learn how to make money: Like being a successful practitioner in any field of human endeavor requires being skillful. Likewise making money entails one having such skill set. Firstly you have learn to use your head. Secondly partnership is crucial. Synergy (The interaction of two or more agents or forces so that their combined effect is greater than the sum of their individual effects) is very important. Also creativity and ideas generation cannot to pushed aside. Patience and perseverance are also very crucial. 4. You need a mentor: just as your cannot become Medical Doctor without going through the Medical school, and learning under consultants and professors. You will need to learn under people who have proved over time that they know what it takes make money, and are currently making money. 5. If you can’t make up your mind decisively, then you will not learn to make money. Opportunities come and go, but being able to make the quick decision is an important skill. 6. You will have to sacrifice some of your hubbies for knowledge. Many young men (me inclusive) may have reduce our appetite for EPL matches and other football matches that virtually take over our weekends and use such time to develop our skills on how to make money. 7. Looks can be deceptive: a nice car or house does not necessarily mean that you are rich. Real wealth is built over time and can stand the test of time. It is not instantaneous. When the ancient Chinese decided to live in peace, they made the great wall of China, They thought no one can climb it due to its height. During the first 100 year of its existence, the Chinese were invaded thrice. ... And every time, the hordes of enemy infantry had no need of penetrating or climbing over the wall...because each time they bribed the guards and came through the doors. The Chinese built the wall but forgot the character-building of the wall-guards. Thus the building of human character comes BEFORE building of anything else..... That's what our Students need today. Like one of the Orientals says: If you want to destroy the civilization of a nation there are 3 ways: 1. Destroy family structure 2. Destroy education 3. Lower their role models and references 1. In order to destroy the family; undermine the role of Mother, so that she feels ashamed of being a housewife. 2. To destroy education: you should give no importance to Teacher, and lower his place in society so that the students despise him. 3. To lower the role models: you should undermine the scholars, doubt them until no one listens to them or follows them. For when a conscious mother disappears, a dedicated teacher disappears and there's a downfall of role models, WHO will teach the youngsters VALUES?... Have a thought! Is your home also invaded? Just a thought, NOT a sermon . |
Christopher Kolade, ex-chairman of the Subsidy Re-investment and Empowerment Programme, has named the reasons why he resigned his position in 2013. He said the operations of the porgramme were becoming tainted with corruption and politics, thereby losing its credibility. Kolade, who spoke on Channels Television Programme, “Views From The Top”, added that some officials of the government of ex-president Goodluck Jonathan were practising “something that was lower than the transparency”, expected of an interventionist agency like SURE-P. He said he found out that some of the conclusions the agency was making did not meet up with the standard they had set it up for. “The government realized people would not believe what they were saying,” ex-chairman stated. “And the President said ‘we need to gain credibility with the people in this programme. So we believe that if you and your committee can manage this thing transparently in accordance with what we agreed, then that credibility will be there’. “Now that’s fine. But when I discovered that there were individuals in the system that were practicing something that was lower than the transparency that we went in with, I raised the issues. And I discovered that political affiliations and things made this difficult.” The former SURE-P boss quoted an example when the institution decided to hire 5000 youth from every state of Nigeria. He said: “We started by saying that we would offer employment to 5000 youths from every state. Of course if you are sitting in Abuja, and you want to identify 5000 youths in all the states, it is difficult unless you involve people who are on the spot. “Now, it was the feeling of our committee, led by me, that to identify people in the states, we needed people who were political neutral. In other words, get civil servants to go in there and say according to the criteria you‘ve agreed, these are the 5000 youths from this state. But we were told that would not be acceptable. “So something was set up called State Implementation Committees made up mainly of people with political affiliations with one party or the other. When that was brought into play, I pointed out that I feared this would politicize what we were trying to do. And that therefore I felt we should take politicians out of this. But I was overruled by those who had the power to overrule me. “And then, it started happening. I got complaints from Abia state, from Ekiti state that many of the youths being recruited into the programme were supporters of party A or party B and I went back, and said what I suspected is beginning to happen. “So we need to kill this thing right away and go back to what we agreed. Now, somehow, we couldn’t do that. And for me, if you destroy the foundation on which you are setting up something like that, if you feel that credibility is the key to success in this thing, and then you undermine credibility by politicizing the issues, you are shooting yourself on the foot. And I’m not very good at shooting in the foot because I find out I can’t walk very well after that.” Kolade left his position as chairman of SURE-P in November 2013, quoting advanced age at the time. He said having attained 80 years; he wanted to slow on energy-demanding activities. The SURE-P was mandated to convert saved fuel subsidy money into jobs, roads and other people-oriented programmes. https://www.naij.com/544708-jonathans-men-practicing-corruption-former-official-reveals.html cc: lalasticlala |
LAGOS—Attempt by a middle-aged man to exchange an eight-year-old kidnapped boy with goods worth N51,000 in Surulere area of Lagos, has been foiled , following his arrest, Monday. The suspect, identified as Jonathan Cooker, reportedly kidnapped the primary school pupil (names withheld) who was returning from a summer coaching in a school located around Lawrence road. Thereafter, he reportedly took the boy to a provision store located on Cole Street and ordered for crates of soft drinks worth N51,000. Instead of paying, he was said to have told the shop owner that he would be leaving his younger brother (kidnapped boy) behind, to get money from the house. The unsuspecting shop owner obliged him and gave the crates of soft drinks to him. But the bubble burst after a passer-by who identified the little boy asked what he was doing in the shop. At that moment, Cooker reportedly increased his pace in a bid to escape from the scene . But he was immediately apprehended when the little boy told the passer-by that he was picked by a stranger.
