TUNDE OGUNTOLA in this piece, writes on the health hazards of skin lightening as it is not just all about skin bleaching but also what comes after. Bleaching is the process of whitening or lightening any material by the use of chemicals. While, skin bleaching basically involves using chemicals to lighten skin tone or provide an even skin complexion by lessening the concentration of melanin in the human skin. Melanin is responsible for giving black colouring in the human skin. When skin bleaching cream is applied of the body, the effectiveness of the pigment is hindered. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 77 per cent of Nigerian women use skin-lightening products, the world’s highest percentage. That compares with 59 per cent in Togo, and 27 per cent in Senegal. The reasons for this are varied but most people say they use skin-lighteners because they want “white skin” and look more beautiful. Research shows that it is not only women though who are obsessed with bleaching their skins. Some men too are involved in the practice. There are various reasons why people bleach their skins to become whiter than they were before which include among others: low self-esteem, self-hate, peer group and quest for beauty, because in many parts of Africa, lighter-skinned women are considered more beautiful and are believed to be more successful and likely to find marriage. The numbers of people that dive into bleaching are on the increase, the truth is, skin bleaching comes with hazardous health consequences, which include blood cancers such as leukemia and cancers of the liver and kidneys as well as severe skin conditions. It is true that some persons look good when they apply bleaching cream on their skins, but what about the consequences or adverse effects of making use of bleaching cream. There are many dangers associated with bleaching, be it face whitening or the entire skin bleaching. The adverse effects of skin bleaching are: vulnerability to body infections, stretch marks exposure, skin weakening, vulnerability to injuries, exposes the veins, intense irritation, redness, pigmentation, vulnerability to body infections. The growth in skin bleaching is more in some parts of the world like Asia, Africa and in the Middle East. The high demand of skin lightening cream in those parts of the world is because their population is mainly dark skinned. As a result of this, many want to look like the English and hence lightening up their skin colour. Most hard-core bleachers use illegal ointments containing toxins like mercury, a metal that blocks production of melanin, which gives the skin its colour, but can also be toxic. There are a number of materials or chemicals used in skin bleaching. Few among the many are: mercury, hydroquinone, niacinamide, kojic acid, arbutin, lactic acid, gel, shea b*tter, topical retinoids, and corticosteroids among others. Mercury is the very dangerous chemical that medical officials found in the skin lightening creams that sickened the women, the dangers of mercury are several. It can damage the kidneys and wreak havoc on the nervous system. Symptoms of mercury toxicity include: irritability, headaches, difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, memory loss, numbness, tingling in the hands, feet or around the lips, insomnia, depression and weight loss. Hence, if you have experienced any of these symptoms after using an unmarked cream, see your doctor right away. Governor Willie Obiano announced the prerogative of mercy and the empowerment on the prisoners serving different jail terms in Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi prisons as part of activities marking the nation’s fifty fifth Independence Anniversary and as a measure of hope to them to be able to re-integrate into the society and fend for themselves. Following Nigeria’s latest appearance at the United Nations General Assembly, ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo has revealed what some world leaders think of the current Nigeria’s head of state, Muhammadu Buhari. Obasanjo divulged the notions of the global leaders at an interview with reporters at his Abeokuta home on Thursday, October 1. The ex-president said that feedback from the world leaders and statesmen during the recent UN summit proved that beyond having a good outing, President Buhari also helped to place Nigeria at a strategic position on the map for global politics. He said: “I heard some of the comments of those he (Buhari) met; the comment that probably will not come back to him. He met Clinton for almost one hour and (ex) President Clinton, when I joined him for his global initiative, talked to me about the impression of our president, it was favourable. “Gordon Brown and I met him and we talked about issues. The few other leaders who met him gave me their impression and his debut so to say, it has been good. I think we are at the table, what they use to say that Nigeria is not at the table, now we are present at the table.” Meanwhile, the former commander-in-chief has said on the Independence Day that at 55, Nigeria is not doing badly. The statement was made in line with the Nigeria at 55th anniversary celebration. Obasanjo said that 55 years in the life of a nation mean it is comparatively young, adding that looking through the history of most settled societies or established countries, Nigerians will realise that the country is not doing too badly. He noted that Nigeria was now well positioned for recognition and active participation in global politics under the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. However, he stressed that youth unemployment, education, security, justice, and the economy, among others, are the areas in which the country must pay keen attention. According to the former president, corruption must not be given a chance to destroy everything noble about Nigeria. He advised that the menace must be ousted at all cost. https://www.naij.com/576058-amazing-obasanjo-reveals-global-leaders-think-buhari.html |

As Nigeria marks her 55th anniversary as a nation today, October 1, so many Nigerians will observe the holiday declared by the federal government and the day will go on like every other day. This is because majority of Nigeria’s citizens are no longer passionate about the country due to many factors that is entirely not their fault. READ ALSO: 5 Politicians That Should Be Celebrated Like Nigeria’s Independence Heroes Naij.com lists five reasons why most of them have since lost the interest in participating in the country’s annual independence celebrations. Read below: 1. Division of the political landscape: The constant political tension in the land is one factor that has led to so many Nigerians not showing interest in the independence celebrations. Groups such as the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) canvassing for the break-up of the country have contributed to the polarisation of the country along regional lines. There are also groups like MASSOB across the nation whose past time seem to be fanning the embers of disunity. 2. Economic Factors: Because of the economic challenges that most Nigerians face on a daily basis, most of them are usually not bothered by celebrations like the independence or any other one at that. People just go about their duties and focus on their ends meet without giving a hoot about what is going on around them. 3. Lack of Patriotism: Most Nigerians are not patriotic. This is not really a deliberate act by the citizens, it is because many do not want to identify with the country, due to the ills that Nigeria has been tagged with by the international community and also because of some unscrupulous and criminal elements in the country, who have succeeded in creating a bad image for the nation. Many Nigerians are holders of more advanced countries passport, just to escape being subjected to ridicule by immigration officials all around the world. Such citizens do not concern themselves with important national days like the independence day. 4. Low Awareness: The government at all levels are not doing enough to educate and orientate Nigerians, especially the younger ones on the significance of the independence day celebration. There is little or no awareness programme created and funded by the government to ensure that the legacy of Nigeria’s independence is well documented and preserved for the upcoming generations. 5. Security Challenges: The security challenges in Nigeria have been a major issue that Nigerians have had to live with. The North East especially has been subjected to terrorists attacks especially on major holidays. Before now, people in these places troop to recreational centres to celebrate the independence, but nowadays, people are forced to stay indoors in order not to be caught unawares when criminal elements strike due to the relaxed security during holidays. https://www.naij.com/572351-5-reasons-nigerians-not-passionate-independence-celebrations.html |
As we celebrate our independence today, I will like us to itemize the great achievements we have made as a Nation. Mine is when Nigeria defeated Brazil in the Olympics and went ahead and win the Olympic gold medal in Men's footbball in Atlanta 1966. |

Berlin: A 19-year-old girl was strangulated to death by her father after she was caught stealing condoms from a shop to have sex with her boyfriend. Asadullah Khan, 51, who hails from Pakistan, killed his daughter Lareeb on 28 January this year for bringing dishonour to the family. Khan and his wife Shazia, 41, are both on trial for the murder in Darmstadt, Germany. Khan has confessed to killing Lareeb, as he disapproved of his daughter having sexual relations with a Muslim man. During the court hearing, Shazia said she tried to save Lareeb on the fateful night, but was unable to do so as she was a downtrodden woman. However, adding to the twist, the couple's younger daughter Nadia informed the court saying, "My Mama was not suppressed, she could do what she wanted. She used to hit me with a stick.” Nida told the court that her father never allowed them to talk about Lareeb's boyfriend and wanted his elder daughter to be forcibly married in Pakistan. While narrating the whole incident, Shazia told the court, “Lareeb stayed away from the home for several nights in a row and stopped wearing the headscarf. One day we received a letter from the police saying she had been caught trying to steal condoms.” "At this point it became clear that there was sexual contact. When I showed the letter to my husband he snapped." Lareeb's boyfriend Raheel also informed the court that she was repeatedly tortured by her parents for being in relationship with him. http://zeenews.india.com/news/world/19-year-old-daughter-killed-by-father-for-stealing-condoms-to-have-sex-with-boyfriend_1803777.html Cc: lalasticlala |
