"The Tragic Tale of Ekene: From Humble Beginnings to a Violent End" When Ekene Obidike left his village in Anambra for South Africa in 2012, no one could have imagined the bittersweet turn his life would take. Born into a modest family in Oba, Ekene was no stranger to hardship. At just 19, after the death of his beloved mother, he juggled farming and schooling to pay his way through the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) in Enugu, where he graduated in Business Administration in 2009. His determination paid off when he completed his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at Shell in Warri in 2010, where many admired his discipline and hardworking nature. Standing tall at 6 feet 8 inches, with a chiseled face and an infectious smile, Ekene was not just handsome but also a beacon of inspiration to many young men in his community. But tragedy would ultimately overshadow his dreams. In 2012, Ekene relocated to Durban, South Africa, seeking greener pastures. Within two years, he had transformed his fortunes, earning enough to send over ₦10 million home to his sisters, Nkechi and Ifeoma, for family upkeep and to renovate their father’s crumbling house in Oba. “He called me that day, telling me to check my account,” Nkechi recalls tearfully. “When I saw the credit alert, I cried. Ekene was always giving, even when he had little.” Despite warnings from his cousin, Chijioke, Ekene initially got involved in drug trafficking to make ends meet. It was a dangerous game, but the money came fast. However, Ekene soon realized the risks outweighed the rewards and decided to pivot to legitimate business ventures. By 2014, he had established a successful electronics import business and was well on his way to becoming a respected entrepreneur. “I begged him not to go to South Africa,” Chijioke lamented. “I told him stories of Nigerians being killed there. But Ekene was stubborn; he said he had no choice but to succeed.” Success, however, came at a cost. As Ekene’s wealth grew, so did the envy and suspicion surrounding him. On July 10, 2024, Ekene returned to Durban from a business trip in Johannesburg. Unknown to him, danger awaited. At around 8:30 PM, neighbors reported seeing six men loitering near Ekene’s home in the Umhlanga Ridge area of Durban. He arrived home in his Toyota Hilux at 9 PM, greeted by the sound of barking dogs. Eyewitnesses later recounted that the attackers ambushed him as he unlocked his door. Shots rang out in the quiet neighborhood—ten bullets to his chest, followed by a savage stab to his neck. His lifeless body was left in a pool of blood. The news devastated his family. His younger sister, Ifeoma, collapsed upon hearing of his death, while Nkechi screamed uncontrollably. It took weeks of paperwork and hefty fees to repatriate his remains to Nigeria. On August 15, 2024, Ekene’s body arrived in Lagos in a black body bag. His once-vibrant face was now cold and lifeless. “I held his hands at the funeral,” Chijioke says, sobbing. “I couldn’t recognize the Ekene I grew up with. He worked so hard, yet this is how he ended.” The funeral, held on August 20, 2024, in Oba, was a sorrowful affair. Friends, family, and community members gathered to mourn the tragic loss of a son who had brought pride to his village. Even in death, Ekene’s story was a reminder of the dangers many Nigerians face abroad. Ekene’s life was a tale of resilience, ambition, and heartbreak. From his humble beginnings as a farmer in Anambra to his tragic death in South Africa, his story echoes the dreams and struggles of many young Nigerians. Yet, it also serves as a cautionary tale about the price of success in an unforgiving world. “I warned him,” Chijioke repeated at the graveside, his voice cracking. “I told him not to go. But Ekene wanted to make a difference.” As his coffin was lowered into the ground, cries of anguish filled the air. For Ekene, the boy who farmed his way through school, the man who sent millions to his family, and the dreamer who sought a better life, the journey had come to a tragic end. May his soul rest in peace. |
