Nigeria tops Africa's investment index Written by Omoh Gabriel with agency reports Thursday, 19 February 2009 Nigeria has been described as a future investment destination in Africa, according to a survey report released in London yesterday. The survey report conducted by Business Consultancy African Rainbow's Star of Africa index, though scored Nigeria low on corporate governance, however, noted that the country's potential were huge and saw it on top of the table of future investment destinations on the continent. According to the report, "Nigeria also scored poorly for corporate governance but its potential for infrastructure expansion in electricity, water, information technology and communications as well as its status as Africa's most populous country were enough to propel it to the top of the list. "Rising oil prices had made Nigeria a favoured investment destination but as the oil price slumped in recent months, the government has imposed capital controls as the currency fell leaving investors concerned that they might not get their money out," he said. Ms. Katharine Pulvermacher, Chief Executive Officer of Rainbow, said such events were covered under "corporate governance" and that different investors would have different tolerances for risk and reward. Some investors would view corporate governance as more important than others," she said. Nigeria and Ethiopia topped the new index of African potential investor destinations on Wednesday, with the survey organisers saying the continent offers good potential growth even against the global economic crisis. "The world's poorest continent had seen an investment boom in recent years but flows into the region are seen drying up as the global financial crisis and falling commodity prices take the shine off what were seen as promising frontier markets. Business Consultancy African Rainbow's Star of Africa index ranks 53 African countries in terms of their investment potential in various fields, with its creators arguing that potential growth in energy, water and communications consumption could amply reward investors taking the risk. "It is for investors to make sure they don't miss a trick by overlooking a country they would otherwise have missed," said Pulvermacher. "Africa is going to overtake the Middle East to become the second fastest growing region in the world after emerging Asia. It will be affected by the global financial crisis but it is much less exposed than many places." South Africa, Mauritius and Tanzania took third, fourth and fifth places respectively. http://www.vanguardngr.com/content/view/29131/43/ |

NDLEA arrested 14 drug suspects at Lagos airport in 18 months Shola Adekola,Lagos - 19.02.2009 the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has, in the last one and a half months, arrested 14 suspects at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, with 77.307 kilogrammes of drugs. Two of the suspects were caught with 59.547 kilogrammes g of cannabis, one with 1.827 kilogrammes of heroin and the remaining 11 with 15.933 kilogrammes of cocaine. The estimated street value of the drugs is about N60 million. According to the NDLEA Airport Commander,Victor Cole-Showers, eight of the suspects were caught in February. He gave their names as Emmanuel Chidi Ogbuji (45), Mezue James Obinna (30), Eluma Ifeanyi (30) and Okoro Igwe Onwuka (35). Others are Onum Michael (36), Anaeto Harrison Ugochukwu (39), Obiora Chukwudiebere Celestine (46) and David Monteiro (35). All of them were found to have ingested drugs on their way to various destinations in Europe. The NDLEA’s image maker, Mitchelle Ofoyeju, however, said “if the anxiety being expressed by one of the suspects, Michael, is anything to go by, he may just be the next drug suspect to be operated upon this year to evacuate cocaine from his stomach.” Michael, who hails from Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, was arrested on February 6 for testing positive to drug ingestion and allegedly confessed to have ingested 78 wraps of drugs which he was to deliver in Hamburg, Germany, for a fee of 3,000 euros. He was said to have excreted 77 wraps of cocaine, remaining one inside him. http://www.tribune.com.ng/19022009/news/news14.html |
Confessions Of Man Eaters P.M. News (Lagos) ANOL February 5, 1999 Posted to the web February 5, 1999 By Gabriel Orok, Nkiru Nwokediuko, John Odiboh Lagos Crowds still gathered this morning at Toyota bus stop, Oshodi Isolo expressway, the former kitchen of the Lagos cannibal, Clifford Orji. The cannibal was arrested Wednesday by the police after the cries of Awawu, a gaunt and shackled woman from Agege gave him away. Clifford and his accomplice, Tahiru have been singing to the police in Lagos on why they had been killing fellow human beings for dinner. People always suspected that Clifford Orji was queerly different. He used to sell razor blades at the bustling Oshodi market several years ago. Then he shifted his abode to a self-created grotto under the highway bridge in Isolo, where he advertised himself as a "native doctor Chinneyelu". Occasionally, he violently pursued stray-walkers to his "sanctuary" during day time. In the dead of the night he usually blanketed the air around him with the meat-like odour from his special barbecue. People merely suspected that this barbecue- loving recluse was not normal; that he was possibly mad. But no one was prepared for the horrendous discovery of last Wednesday: that Orji was also a cannibal - a man eater! The discovery sent shock waves throughout the sprawling metropolis of seven million people, drawing hundreds of people to the under-the-bridge abode of Orji, where he also kept a well-kitted kitchen to prepare cooked and roasted human flesh! How long the afro-haired man from Enugu State has been feeding on human flesh in Lagos is unknown. How many people he has slaughtered for dinner is also unknown, as Orji has not revealed much during police interrogations and even the parade before klieglights and journalists in Lagos Thursday. A shrill cry of a famished and emaciated lady, waiting to be slaughtered, was what gave up Orji Wednesday. The noise attracted passersby who not only discovered the woman but also stumbled on a phalanx of human parts in Orji's make-shift home. Human bones, skulls, legs, hands, freshly cooked soup with human meat, were discovered. The uproar triggered by this shock discovery was said to have attracted men of the Operation Sweep. Surrounded, Orji attempted to escape. But the police quickly arrested him and took him to the Makinde Police Station in Oshodi, nearby. The lady being dressed for slaughtering, and who Orji had turned into a sex-slave for several days, was freed and taken to the hospital in Ikeja. The arrest of another person, said to be Orji's accomplice in the human-flesh eating business introduced a new dimension to the tragedy. Police have since found that Orji and his friend were not just human eaters, they were also human spare-parts sellers, as money, cheques were said to have been recovered at the make-shift home at the popular Toyota Bus Stop on the Oshodi-Isolo Expressway. Were Orji and his accomplice mad? Some people interviewed at the scene of the tragedy believed they are sane. Some did not. "What evidence do you have to claim that he's mad," said Chuks Igbokwe who spoke with the National Concord. "As far as I am concerned, he might be one of these Otokoto ritual murderers who trade in human parts. If he is mad, why should he kill and eat his victims?" People who frequently passed by Orji's make-shift home of horror recounted incidents when they were chased by the iron-rod wielding Orji; incidents when his potential victims escaped by the whiskers; incidents when the smell of his human barbecue pervaded the environment. "Any time wey I pass here, I go see the man eating meat . . . I no know say na person im de chop," Okechukwu, a motor spare parts dealer told The Guardian Wednesday. The controversy about Orji's mental state will linger for some time. Up till this morning, Lagosians continued to troop to Orji's former home as news of Orji's cannibalism spread. On Thursday, Orji and his accomplice were paraded to newsmen by the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Sunday Aghedo. The journalists who crowded the premises of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS of the Lagos State Police Command, Ikeja, covered their noses with handkerchief while interviewing Orji who claimed to be a native of Enugu State. Besides Orji was a middle-aged man, unidentified by the police, and who was bleeding on his nose and mouth. Mr. Sunday Aghedo, the state commissioner of police, described the two men as human eaters. On display beside them were roasted parts of human beings - heads, leg, hand and the abdomen. One severed head wore a permed hair of a lady identified as "Eno", a trader from Akwa Ibom. Aghedo continued: "These are the men who were arrested yesterday by members of the Operation Sweep. They were arrested with human parts in their enclave at the local airport area and taken to Makinde Police Station. They are now answering questions on homicide at the State Crime Intelligence Department (SCID)". When it was his turn to speak, Orji confessed to the media men: "We are human meat eaters. We have killed over three people, especially young girls who hawk wares. We always lured them to our enclave under the pretext that we wanted to purchase their wares. Once they are in our net, we pounced on them and killed them for eatable meat. My colleagues is the human hunter while I am the butcher. We usually go for girls with permed hair." "Why, have you taken to human eating; is it because you cannot afford animal meat?, "a journalist asked Orji. Orji replied: "We have been eating human meat for the past seven years before coming to Lagos. It is our culture to eat human meat". "If you are a free man today will you still be eating human meat?" Orji was asked again. "Yes, to me there is no difference between human and goat meat," Orji replied. The lack of remorse by the cannibals is making the police doubt the mental state of the men. "They may be victims of psychic and spiritual problems. Before prosecution, we have to send them to psychiatric home for medical examination. Who knows, they maybe mentally sick". Mr. Aghed said. Cannibalism is a taboo in Lagos, but in some parts of Nigeria, especially, in the south east states of Cross River and Calabar, human meat eating is not strange. There were reports of food vendors selling human meat as animal meat to unsuspecting hungry travellers. Inside the Cannibal's Kitchen 1. Rusty frying pans 2. Bucket 3. Bowl containing human bones 4. Grill on another metal bowl 5. Firewood 6. Human parts: roasted limbs, palms, wrists, ankles, feet, thigh, skulls. 7. Rice, yam, gari, pepper, and oil 8. Soup pot with human meat. 9. A gaunt lady waiting to be slaughtered 10. Cutlasses, knives. 11. Cellular phone 12. Money estimated to be N500,000 |

it is true that most of us Nigerians seem to glorify any manner of wealth but these kinds of action do not rub off well on any Nigerian, not even those who stand to get a piece of the action. This is how the stereotypes grow and are sustained. ![]() |

Nigerian kidnappers to get life Kidnapping can be big business for militants and "cult" groups Kidnappers in one of Nigeria's oil-producing southern states will now face life in prison. The Rivers State government has passed a law fixing life terms in jail for those found guilty. Previously judges could use their discretion. Kidnapping has been on the increase in recent months in Nigeria's restive Niger Delta, prompting the governor to announce harsh new penalties. But critics say that kidnap gangs are hardly ever caught, let alone tried. Militants demanding a bigger share of Nigeria's oil wealth began kidnapping expatriate oil workers in 2006. Street gangs, known as "cults", made up of jobless, armed youths, also joined in what is a lucrative enterprise. Although oil companies deny paying ransoms, it is believed captives are freed after some kind of transaction. Correspondents say most expatriate workers have left Port Harcourt and now anyone who is suspected of having money is targeted. 'Death penalty' There have been several high profile kidnappings this year, including a Catholic priest from the steps of his church after mass and the seizure of a nine-year-old boy whose 11-year-old sister was shot dead trying to protect him. Isn't life in a jail here really a death sentence? Ogbonna Nwuke Rivers State governor spokesman Girl shot dead in Nigerian Delta Following these cases, Governor Rotimi Amaechi had called for the death penalty to be applied for convicted kidnappers. His aides said the life sentence agreed by the state government was not a compromise. "After all, isn't life in a jail here really a death sentence?" spokesman Ogbonna Nwuke told the BBC News website. "Now we have sent a message to the kidnappers by setting this sentence, it is up to the rest of the country to get together and work out a way of ending this problem in the Niger Delta," he said. 'Publicity stunt' But human rights activists say they are suspicious of the Rivers State government's actions. They say the new measures are not much more than empty talk. "When do they ever catch anyone for kidnapping?" said Patrick Naagbanton, of the Centre for Environment Human Rights and Development. "These gangs have political connections, they are protected," he told the BBC. He said innocent people would bear the brunt of any police crackdown. Human rights lawyer Anyakwee Nsirimovu told the BBC the action was a "frivolous publicity stunt". "How can anyone believe legislation is the way to sort out this problem when the police lack the capacity to intervene, or investigate cases?" A police spokeswoman in Rivers State said she did not have figures for how many successful kidnapping prosecutions had been brought in the last year. There have been 14 kidnappings in the state since January, she told the BBC. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7897317.stm |
Toxic rubbish 'dumped in Africa' Hundreds of thousands of household items end up in African rubbish dumps Tonnes of toxic waste from municipal dumps in the West are being dumped illegally in countries like Nigeria and Ghana, an investigation has found. Hundreds of thousands of broken items like TVs and computers are being sold to dealers on the pretext of re-use. Under EU law, such household appliances must be dismantled or recycled. But they are stripped of raw metals by those working on poisoned waste dumps, the report by Greenpeace, Sky News and Britain's Independent newspaper found. Greenpeace said the young people working on such dumps often break apart the electronic items for parts, but in doing so are exposed to poisonous chemicals like mercury, lead and cadmium. We took all the insides out and put [in] a tracker device Environmentalist Iza Kruszewskahe Computers pile up in Ghana dump "We basically managed to track a TV going from the UK allegedly as second-hand equipment to Nigeria," Iza Kruszewskahe, from the environmental group, told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme. "When in fact we knew, because we gutted it, this TV, before it left the UK, we took all the insides out and put [in] a tracker device, which enabled us to track this old TV from the UK, through the recycler, etc to Nigeria." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7897631.stm |
Naira downward slide continues , now N159 to $1 From ISAAC ANUMIHE, Abuja Wednesday, February 18, 2009 For two months, the naira has continued to dwindle to the effect that it has lost 20 per cent of its value against the dollar thus falling to N159 to the dollar on the black market, its lowest level in several years. More Stories on This Section advertisement According to agency report, the naira's decline has been brought about by falling world oil prices, which are eating into foreign earnings in Africa's top oil producer and clouding its economic outlook. CBN Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has said the currency controls could remain in place for weeks or months and that they are meant to help sub-Saharan Africa's second-biggest economy cope better with the global financial crisis. The apex bank at its bi-weekly forex auction sold $206 million at 145.90 to the dollar but failed to meet demand, forcing the local currency lower on the parallel black market. However, the amount sold by the apex bank was short of the $385 million demanded at the auction. At its previous auction last Wednesday, the regulator also failed to meet demand, selling $326 million at N145.50 to the dollar. The Central Bank has forbidden commercial banks from reselling forex bought at its auction or any other sources on the interbank market, making the black market the only alternative source for U.S. dollars. CBN, during the last MPC meeting, had decided to directly control the exchange rate within a band of plus or minus three per cent which makes the CBN buying and selling rate to be one per cent, while that of the banks’ and Bureau De Change will not be more than one per cent and two per cent respectively. |
very sad, to give such a bad name to our beloved Nigeria! ![]() |
