African migrants drowned at sea The Canary Islands has long been a magnet for African migrants Nineteen people, including an eight-year-old girl, drowned when a migrant boat capsized 20m (65ft) from shore in the Canary Islands, rescuers say. Three people are still said to be missing after the boat, carrying mainly North African migrants, overturned off the eastern coast of Lanzarote. Local residents rescued six people from the vessel after Sunday's accident. Emergency services recovered 14 more bodies from the sea, a day after five others were pulled out of the water. Rescue helicopters have been scouring for any other survivors, but police say hopes are fading fast. 'Screaming' Anibal Betancourt, who took part in the rescue operation, told local radio they found survivors "clinging to the sinking boat and screaming", reported the AFP news agency. Most of the migrants involved are said to be from Morocco. The Spanish Canary Islands off the north-western coast of Africa have in recent years attracted thousands of African migrants seeking a better life in Europe. But increased surveillance has meant the number of migrants reaching the Canary Islands has dropped from almost 32,000 in 2006 to about 9,000 in 2008. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7892308.stm |
Ndigbo Decry Attempt to Blackmail Onovo 02.17.2009 Lagos.thisdayonline Igbo in Lagos yesterday have accused Oruku Village, in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State, of launching media campaign of calumny against Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr Ogbonnaya Onovo. The group said Onovo was accused of meddling in the crisis between Oruku and the neighbouring community of Umuode, in the same local government area, which it described as an act of crass irresponsibility. In a release jointly signed by Chief Christopher Eze, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (rtd), Chief Tony Idigbe, SAN and Professor Anya O. Anya, the group noted that "not only is this grave allegation spurious, baseless and malicious, the people making it are ingeniously trying to psychologically browbeat the police and government from arresting and prosecuting all those behind the January 31, 2009 local war waged against Umuode, in which houses belonging to a High Court Judge, a former Minister and other prominent individuals were burnt, ostensibly to protest implementation of the Enugu State government White Paper on resolution of the perennial crisis between Umuode and Oruku communities.” "We are shocked that some people could, in this day and age, blatantly refuse their neighbours their ancestral homeland where they have lived for centuries and even have the effrontery to publicly declare a whole autonomous community 'their customary tenants.' This action shows a group of people with a mindset of those still in the primitive age of mankind. "We are more shocked that they could attempt to drag DIG Onovo into a village affair in which he has exhibited absolutely no interest, or is Onovo from any of the feuding communities, he is actually from a separate town called Akpugo," the release read. |

Fashola denies sales of Tejuosho forms 18/2/2009 Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) yesterday assured traders, who have made deposits on the Kaiyero Model Market in Oshodi, that they would not be displaced for electronics sellers. The governor also denied rumours that the government had authorised the sale of forms for the Tejuosho market, which is under construction, saying no one should allow himself or herself to be deceived. Fashola gave the assurance at Alausa, when he addressed some traders who converged on the residence of the President-General of the Market Men and Women Association of Nigeria, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, whom he visited. He said the initial plan to relocate the electronics sellers to the Kaiyero market would be revisited, promising that the women would not be displaced. Fashola also advised them not to pay money to anybody for collection of application forms for the Tejuosho market, describing such as a fraud. He said he has not been informed by anybody that old and potential new allottees will pay for any form. The governor said if such payments would be made, government would officially inform the traders. Fashola said construction work is on-going at all the markets being constructed by the state government at Oyingbo; Tejuosho; Iponri; Jankara and Ikeja. He appealed to the people to exercise patience as the process will take some time. The governor said all the markets are being built by experts, assuring the people of being the beneficiaries after completion. One of the traders said she has made a deposit of N1.1 million for a shop at the Kaiyero market only to be informed that government has decided to relocate sellers of electronic items to the market. http://www.thenationonlineng.com/dynamicpage.asp?id=77445 |
Gunshots at Imo Govt House as workers run for safety Written by Chidi Nkwopara Tuesday, 17 February 2009 Owerri—Staff of Government House, Owerri, Imo State scampered for safety at the weekend, following what most of the workers called “a volley of gunshots released by some of the policemen on duty”. Although information from the Government House was a bit hazy at press time, but two versions of what happened, however, attributed the shooting to a drunken policeman, while another account said the policemen were protesting unpaid allowances. One of the workers, who spoke on grounds of anonymity, claimed that “the policemen were angrily protesting their unpaid allowances, which is about N4,000 per week per, per person”. According to the source, “it was not too clear why the allowances of the policemen posted to the Government House, Owerri, remained unpaid before they decided to stampede everybody”. The source said “the policemen, who confided in some staff, blamed their woes on the Chief of Staff, Sir Emma Ohakim”. “We scampered for safety as soon as the firing started, especially as we were not too sure what led to the shooting. Besides, nobody wanted to be hit by bullets”, he added. The second account, according to a source said “the policeman in question was drunk”, adding that “people could smell alcohol from his mouth when he spoke”. According to the source, the policeman shut the Government House gate and ordered the workers to leave the vicinity or risk being shot. When the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO, Mr. Linus Nwaiwu, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), was contacted on phone, he claimed ignorance of the shooting, but promised to get back to our reporter. “I will get back to you as soon as I get details. For now, the Commissioner of Police has invited the Operations Officer to brief him on what happened at Government House. If you exercise a little patience, I will get back to you”, the PPRO said. http://www.vanguardngr.com/content/view/28907/45/ |
