We were told that a furious Justice Mohammed wanted to know why the president sanctioned the abduction of two justices of the Supreme Court in the middle of the night from their homes. According to the source, sometime in January, 2016, the Minister of Aviation, Rotimi Amaechi in the company of a serving Director of the DSS had approached the two arrested Justices of the Supreme Court – Justices Sylvester Ngwuta and John Okoro at the home of Justice Ngwuta at the Judges’ Quarters in Abuja to help compromise the Election Tribunal Judgement before his Lordships. They brought the sum of $2million dollars to achieve this. After speaking with both Justices for over an hour on the matter, they called the de-factor president and childhood friend of the president, Alhaji Mamman Daura on the phone who pleaded with the Justices to help as Mr. Amaechi was representing the president on the matter.

It was also revealed that after going back and forth on the matter, the Justices refused to collect the money and later reported the matter to the CJN. The source further stated that the Chief Justice of the Federation that same week reported the matter to the president. After speaking with both Justices for over an hour on the matter, they called the de-factor president and childhood friend of the president, Alhaji Mamman Daura on the phone who pleaded with the Justices to help as Mr. Amaechi was representing the president on the matter.

A source close to the Chief Justice of Nigeria has told LeadersNG that he believes this is one of the reasons why the two Justices of the Supreme Court might have been arrested.

The source said, the CJN reported the matter to president Buhari that same week in January and the president had assured the CJN he will investigate the matter and never did. The close aide of the CJN told LeadersNG that after going back and forth on the matter, the Justices refused to collect the money from Mr. Amaechi and later reported the matter to the CJN.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday summoned Lawal Daura, the Director of the State Security Services (SSS) over weekend’s crackdown on senior judges across the country.

According to Premium Times, the lawmakers also constituted an ad-hoc committee to investigate the clampdown and said they hoped Daura will appear before it for further explanation.

SSS operatives conducted a midnight raid of the residences of some judges between Friday and Saturday, accusing the judges of fraud.

The operation, largely unprecedented, has continued to generate views amongst Nigerians with condemnation from the Nigerian Senate, the Nigerian Bar Association, senior advocates of Nigeria and prominent civil society groups.

The vote by the House came minutes after it blocked a similar motion.

The House said the SSS must explain where it derived the power to raid judges’ homes.

The motion was tabled by a lawmaker from Rivers State, Chinda Ogundu.

The six-state sting operation also included Mr. Ogundu’s state of Rivers, where Governor Nyesom Wike foiled an attempt to arrest a judge attached to the Port Harcourt Division of the Federal High Court.

Following the clampdown on some judges by the Department of State Service, SSS, the House of Representatives, Tuesday, ruled to probe the arrest of the judges but equally backed the motion of the upper chambers in refusing to summon the Director General of the State Security Service, Lawan Daura.

In a motion brought by Honourable member representing Rivers state, Chinda Ogundu, the House named a committee to investigate weekend’s raid by the State Security Service, SSS, on some judges’ homes across the country.

Although lawmaker, Mojeed Alabi, suggested that the House should respect the principles of separation of powers and stay away from the matter, but the House approved the motion nonetheless.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), has joined some other Nigerians to condemn the Weekend’s invasion and subsequent arrests of Federal Judges by personnel of the Department of State Services, DSS, saying it does not paint the image of the country in good light.

NANS in a statement by its President, Comrade Chinedu Obasi (aka IBB), said “It is at best an overreach on another arm of government. This is regarded as a clear case of arbitrariness that is capable of eroding the democratic tenets that was encapsulated in the doctrine of separation of power.”
