PoliticsRe: Poll For 2face February 6th Protest: Are You For Or Against? by cooncudee(m): 9:47pm On Feb 03, 2017
bluaero:
In my opinion, an online petition will have no effect at all. On the 1st of January 2012, subsidy was removed and fuel price was increased from N65 to N140 or thereabout. We protested and the govt was forced to reduce the price. If a protest could work then, it can work now. It is not a crime to cry out when the suffering becomes unbearable. The responsibility of the police is to ensure no breakdown of law and order on that day. Not to stop the right of citizens to associate.
That protest worked because your demands were practical and specific. What exactly do you expect the government to do in reaction to the protest? If you were in the president's shoes, what will you do? Order a decrease in the price of comodities? Order employers to increase the salary of thier staff? What?
What if they tell you, on the 6th "we've heard all your demands, we'll work on it, you can go back home"? Have you asked yourself 'what next after the protest?' what are we protesting against? what are our demands? are they practical? Is the government the problem or us? Are we blaming the government for all our shortcomings including self inflicted ones? are we trying to solve a problem or shifting blames?

I firmly believe those who the excuse that they have "passion" for a different course than the course they are studying are merely wimps, more intrested in making excuses than going out to get what they really want. undecided

Take me for instance, I'm currently studying chemistry in UI and about to resume to my 200L level.
I'm on a comfortable first-class grade and have won a scholarship.

Yet chemistry was never really my thing nor am I finishing the course undecided.

The claim that not studying your "passion" is an acceptable reason for absymal results and is a tenous claim at best, a childish daydream at worst.

I would recommend you read Robert Greene's Mastery for more knowledge in order to make an informed decision.

In any case, Chimamanda dropped Medicine for Literature and she didn't have to let everyone know about it cheesy

PMB will receive (in 2019) an even greater dose of what was served GEJ (in 2015).

I still think Bahari rode to power on an unprecedented popularity. He just messed it up big time. While those around him got drunk on that popularity e.g. Femi Adesina.

Just 2 years and almost everyone has lost hope in this govt doesn't say how impatient we are, like those around him would say but instead it shows how ill prepared and incompetent they all have been.
and you thought the president (alone) can fix this nation? lets tell ourselves the truth. No matter how well prepared they were, there are a lot of other factors involved that determines if this nation will be fixed or not? we can move forward until we fix all this factors. Dont ask me what those factors are.

It is every citizen's civic and patriotic duty to hold elected government accountable.

"Mr Femi Adesina perfectly exemplifies the confidence of a failing government, deluded by their false sense of popularity" - Couldn't have said it any better. PMB will receive (in 2019) an even greater dose of what was served GEJ (in 2015).
and you'll bring in another clueless ruler. Ask yourself, is protest the solution to the matter? will voting one person out and bringing another in solve our issue? which is better, PDP or APC? when you are voting should it be about kicking a failed govement out or bringing in d saviour? Does our problem even have anything to do with who our president is? what is our problem? how can we solve it?

"if there are two or more ways to accomplish something, and one of them will most likely lead to disaster, someone will do it."

when I first read the above quote, I thought it was a clever joke. this thread has taught me otherwise.
you need to understand human specialization is a myth. humans don't have "one true calling" and depending on how developed your intellect is, you can pursue everything you want to. there's no reason to drop one for the other. it's a self-regenerating cake. you can eat and have it.

there is no reason to stop one course and go to study English just because you want to write. firstly because an English degree includes extra baggage that you simply do not need to be an excellent writer. secondly, because a degree in a science course can come of use later. thirdly, because if you quit now, you're conditioning your brain to be okay with losing focus and once you form the habit, it becomes hard to break it. soon you'll find yourself quiting countless stories halfway.

also, it only makes sense to fully utilize the internet. we have Nairaland literature section, we have wattpad, and countless others. we also have blogging. why not test the waters with this first? your success here will lead to better opportunities for you.
akeeka! you've said it all. That i can draw/paint effortlessly is one of the reasons i'm not studying fine arts or other art related courses. Someone asked me once in sec. schl. what i wanted to become and i gave him a long list, he then called me jack of all trades..., and i told him we shall see. and we will. specialization makes us slaves and limits creativity. You can learn to be a great writer without studying English/literature,it doesnt matter much, really, but it will do you more good if u know a little about evrything. I think she should stay in school, rearrange herself, join those clubs, make use of those platforms like you mentioned and start enjoying her life. and everybody will be happy

Yeah; Animal farm and 1984 has outlived their purpose. The problem with books written in defiance to the current prevailing situation of their time is that they have an expiry date. After that, they become.........less real somehow.

LiteratureRe: What Are The Top 5 Books One Must Read In Their Lifetime And Why? by cooncudee(m): 4:35pm On Jan 24, 2017

Yes, well, it is best to keep in mind the times and political ramblings that was going on at the time George Orwell wrote the book. The book was specifically written to condemn communism and socialism and it does so rather brutally. It might seem over exaggerated to you but there were once times where the ideogogue and political machinations were scaringly similar to what he potrayed.
Yes, the book might be long and winding sometimes but it also contains sailent observations about dictatorial government and tendencies. I personally don't think it's a waste of time.

And maybe it's because I disdain Ayn Rand after reading Anthem but I don't think FountainHead would outshine 1984.

Catch 22 ; is a book that captures the heavy absurdism and confusion in war and life in general.
It might never be regarded as a great classic but I feel the book is as funny as f.

But it's a love it or hate it book. If you don't appreciate absurd humor or can't stand the endless stream of characters, and the whole senseless confusion about war in general; well, you can't like it cheesy
Prior to your mentioning it here, it skipped my mind that George Orwell (the author of Animal farm) wrote 1984. Now I understand why I kept having this nagging feeling of disdain at the graphic descriptions and and overemphasis of the author while reading the book (same way I felt reading Animal farm). I dont take subjective writers seriously. They employ every means to drive home thier point (including exaggeration). Wont read either of the two books a second time.

I dont like Ayn Rand either, but The fountainhead presents a very good representation of the 'consequences' of being the odd one out/standing out.

Catch22 on the other hand, I like, but wont recommend. For same reasons as you mentioned above. It can put ideas in some people's heads

1984 is a critical thoughtpiece that everyone who wants to explore how the real danger and implication of being the odd man out.

And Catch22 is crazy humor. You can't deny it grin grin
There are still some countries as potrayed in the book. North Korea for example.
on that, 1984 presents an exaggerated example of these 'dangers and implications'. I'd recommend Ayn Rand's 'The fountainhead' for that. If I could buy d time I wasted on that bk, I would.
I still wouldnt suggest catch22.

Nairaland GeneralDon't know the title to give this! by cooncudee(op):
I am not an optimist, neither am I a pessimist, because if I can remember well the dictionary definition of a pessimist is a person who always expects bad things to happen. I don’t always expect bad things to happen, rather, I expect good things to happen while I prepare for a bad possible scenario. In simpler terms, I always have a plan B just in case plan A fails, while I hope I don’t eventually get to fall back to plan B. Why am I like this? The answer is simple. I believe there is never an absolute, nothing is 100% sure or correct. Even this statement is not 100% correct because, in mathematics 100 is definitely 100. But there is always an exception. Therefore nothing is ever sure to happen until it has happened, considering this, I always prepare for the eventuality of it not happening.
In view of this, what do I call myself? Since I do not fit the definition of a either an optimistic or a pessimistic person, I guess you could call me an open minded person, a realistic person, or even a doubting Thomas. All this adjectives may be correct, but I prefer not to define what this characteristic of mine is.
I am not a principled person. Why? Because my principles change. I do not make myself immune to change, in fact, I embrace it depending on how I feel about a particular issue at a particular point in time, with the awareness that my previous disposition may be wrong and based on disputable beliefs. I don’t drink, don’t smoke. I do not think abortion is murder. I (give and receive help) during exams (not often but when I really need to). I do not support killing of anybody for whatever reason. I don’t think school is for everybody, education however, is compulsory. All this however, can change tomorrow.
Being open minded requires knowing that you do not have the right to feel superior to other persons because they differ in opinion to you. It requires accepting others and respecting their views even if it doesn’t tally with yours, being open to considering accepting it. I do not like people that in addition to feeling like someone with an opposing opinion to theirs is definitely wrong, try to force their opinions down other people’s throats. This people disgust me (I wrote that subjectively and I’m not sorry for it), even though I understand them and don’t mind liking them if they can do away with such attitude.
You are homophobic, fine! Don’t try to force the idea that ‘it is wrong’ on other people.
You are gay, okay! Don’t try to make people like you and your sexual orientation by force.
You are an atheist, alright! Stop picking on Christians and their beliefs.
And for the believers, God did not ask you to judge or condemn anybody on his behalf for whatever reason.
It is called bullying, why can you not allow others the right to their beliefs, to decide what to believe in, on their terms, from their point of view and respect it. There is nothing wrong in preaching to someone, or expressing your opinion to them with the aim of convincing them to either endorse or rebuke a point of view as the case may be. Forcing others to see through your eyes is utterly wrong.
I listen to radio a lot and I have to say, a lot of these our ‘serious’ radio presenters are guilty of forcing their opinions on people. They throw out a subject of discussion and claim objectivity in their view of the topic and in their reactions to callers, while in actual fact they have subconsciously taken a stance on the matter. This shows from the type of conversation they have with the callers who call to express their opinions on the matter. They tend to agree with a group of callers whose opinions are similar to the what they think is right, even if they aren’t objective, they just accept whatever they say, and throw more questions at those with opposing views and cry foul if they notice any form of sentiment in their opinions. You either say what they like or they pick on you.
People can be objectively subjective -only leaving room for facts that support a stance you subjectively chose. Most of these our OAP’s are like this. They throw out topics and once a caller’s view starts tilting towards a conclusion which they don’t agree with, they call out the person for allowing his emotions to influence his stance at the slightest provocation but they go soft and ignore this if their view agrees with what they subconsciously support. This very well defines being objectively subjective. This is why some people will never agree with anything that comes out of Donald Trump’s mouth even if he has valid points.
Now, as much as I feel it is not cool to be intolerant of other people’s views, I feel this can be changed with a little effort from people with this habit. When you open your mind, you get introduced to a whole new world. If you can get yourself to listen without a biased mind, read without prejudice, objectively consider the ideas of others, you will realize; how much wiser you could have been (if you had listened to their facts when you shut out the thought of their being possibly right); how easier it will be to understand people and why they feel a certain way, endorse a certain idea or say certain things. You will hate people less and forgive more.
Being tolerant and opening up your mind is hard and it isn’t, based on how willing you are to. You first have to realize you have been hostile to new/different ideas. That is the first step to living that healthy life. Then making conscious effort to understand (not necessarily accept) others and their opinions.
Be open minded
Ps: I love Joyce of cool fm, Adenike and Tolu of nigeria info, Titi the Dynamite of Inspiration fm, even though I get angry when I listen to their shows sometimes. They go too deep sometimes.
: I salute writers, it isn’t easy.

Some Christians need to realise the only mandate given to them is to spread the gospel (in a peaceful manner, not forcibly). God did not ask you to help him condemn unbelievers, neither did he ask you to force your beliefs on them. When you waste your time arguing a concept you know little about rather than spending your time studying, trying to fight for God, have it at the back of your mind that you're on your own.
