WHAT IS LASSA FEVER?

Lassa fever which is spread by rats that live in West, Central, and East Africa is an acute viralhemorrhagic fever caused by the Lassa virus. They carry the virus in their urine and faeces and live in homes and areas where food is stored. Lassa fever is transmitted to humans from contacts with food or household items contaminated with rodent (rats) excreta with an incubation period of 6 to 21 days.

Lassa frequently infects people in West Africa as it results in 300,000 to 500,000 cases annually and causes about 5,000 deaths each year. Apart from Nigeria, the disease is known to be endemic in many West African countries such as Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone as well as in the Central Africa Republic (CAR). Lassa fever affects several organs in the body, such as the liver, spleen and kidneys.

HOW LASSA FEVER SPREADS
* Unlike Ebola which is caused by eating bats or bush animals, its carrier is among us. In this case, they are the rodents in the homes. Rats especially have been identified as the chief hauler.
* Mastomysnatalensis, the rats that harbor Lassa fever virus don't fall sick from it. Instead, they excrete the virus in urine, faeces and other bodily secretions, which contaminate food sources.
* Breathing in dust that is contaminated with rodent (rat) urine and droppings.
* Lassa fever can be contacted if the contaminated substance is inhaled or touches broken skin, blood or mucous membranes. Mucous membranes can be found in our eyes, nose and mouth.
* Direct contact with rodents or their urine and dropping.
* Eating food that is contminated with rodent (rat) urine or droppings.
* Catching and preparing infected rats as food.
* Bite wounds, although this does not happen frequently.
* The disease may spread through direct contact from person to person.
* Lassa fever occurs in all age groups and both sexes. Persons at greatest risk are those living in rural areas where Mastomys are usually found, especially in communities with poor sanitation or crowded living conditions. Health workers are at risk if caring for Lassa fever patients in the absence of proper barrier nursing and infection control practices.

THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF LASSA FEVER
* The incubation period of Lassa fever ranges from 6-21 days.
* Just like in the case of Ebola, the of the Lassa fever shows between the first and third week of the first contact with the virus.
* Its general symptoms may include general malaise, weakness, and headache in mild cases. However, when untreated, the infection may * progress to respiratory distress, bleeding in the gums, repeated vomiting, facial swelling, pain in the chest, back and abdomen as well as shock.
* Neurological problems such as hearing loss, tremors, and encephalitis are symptoms of severe cases and if left untreated, death may occur within two weeks after symptom outset due to multi-organ failure in an infected person.

The most common complication of Lassa fever is deafness. Various degrees of deafness occur in approximately 25 percent of infections, and in many cases hearing loss is permanent. In half of these cases, hearing returns partially after 1 to 3 months. Transient hair loss and gait disturbance may also occur during recovery.

According to the World Health Organisation, death usually occurs within 14 days of outset in severe cases. The disease is worse in pregnant women and nursing mothers, "with maternal death and/or fetalloss occurring in greater than 80% of cases during the third trimester."
Mild symptoms Include slight fever, general malaise and weakness, and headache.

DIAGNOSING LASSA FEVER
Because the symptoms of Lassa fever are so varied and non-specific, clinical diagnosis is often difficult, especially early in the course of the disease. Lassa fever is difficult to distinguish from other viral haemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola virus disease; and many other diseases that cause fever, including malaria, shigellosis, typhoid fever and yellow fever.

Definitive diagnosis requires testing that is available only in specialized laboratories. Laboratory specimens may be hazardous and must be handled with extreme care. Lassa virus infections can only be diagnosed definitively in the laboratory using the following tests:

antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
antigen detection tests
reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay
virus isolation by cell culture.

LASSA FEVER PREVENTION AND CONTROL
* Prevention of Lassa fever relies on promoting good "community hygiene" to discourage rodents from entering homes.
* Ensure to keep rodents out of homes and food supplies, as well as maintaining effective personal hygiene.
* Make sure your house is not conducive for rodents by getting rid of old newspapers and books that can be food to them.
* Store grain and other foodstuffs in rodent-proof containers, disposing of garbage far from the home and maintaining clean households.
* Avoid contact with patient secretions such as blood and body fluids while caring for sick persons.
* Wear protective clothing such as masks, gloves, gowns, and goggles.

LASSA FEVER PREVENTION TIPS
*Avoid Contact (between rats and human beings)
*Block all (rat hideouts)
*Store foodstuffs (in rodent proof containers)
* Cook (all foods thoroughly)
* Always wash (hands thoroughly after contact with a person

Using infection control measures, such as complete equipment sterilization; and isolating infected patients from contact with unprotected persons until the disease has run its course.

In health-care settings, staff should always apply standard infection prevention and control precautions when caring for patients, regardless of their presumed diagnosis. These include basic hand hygiene, respiratory hygiene, use of contact with infected materials), safe injection practices and safe burial practices.

Health workers caring for patients with suspected or confirmed Lassa fever should apply extra infection control measures to prevent contact with the patient's blood and body fluids and contaminated surfaces or materials such as clothing and bedding.

When in close contact (within 1 metre) of patients with Lassa fevert health-care workers ,should wear face protection (a face shield or a goggles), a clean, non-sterile long-sleeved gown, and gloves (sterile gloves for some procedures).

Laboratory workers are also at risk. Samples taken from humans and animals for investigation of Lassa virus infection should be handled by trained staff and processed in suitably equipped laboratories.
Public enlightenment and appropriate information is also needed to protect lives.

LASSA FEVER TREATMENT AND VACCINES
There is no vaccine for Lassa fever currently available for use in humans. The antiviral drug ribavirin seems to be an effective treatment for Lassa fever if given early on in the course of clinical illness. The earlier a person presents, the better the outcome of treatment. Ribavirin is only effective if administered within the first 6 days after the outset of the disease. There is no evidence to support the role of ribavirin as post-exposure prophylactic treatment for Lassa fever.

WHO IS AT RISK?
Everyone. However, the most vulnerable people to the virus include family members, friends and health providers to the victim.

7 things you should not do to your NYSC Documents is a list to remind you and also clarify some things about these important documents that you must take to NYSC orientation camp.

So many questions have been asked, so many PCM has received wrong information. This is just an attempt to remind some PCMs what they already know before and also a confirmation for some.
By NYSC Documents, I mean

*Statement of Result
*Medical Certificate
*Call Up Letter
*Green Card
Relax and read with me 7 things you should not do to your NYSC Documents.

1. Do not Laminate

What Is Lamination?
Lamination is a process whereby thin layers of transparent polythene nylon is joined together to protect paper documents such as certificates, results, testimonials etc.

Why Do People Laminate Certificates?
Here are some important reasons why people seem to laminate their certificates/documents below…
a. Lamination protects paper materials from getting damaged by fluid, dust/dirts, grease and hampered edges.
b. It’s believed that lamination elongates the life span of important document like certificates, results and so on.
c. It improves the strength, quality and appearance of the product.
There are more to it but those are the most important reasons why people often opt in for a lamination.

HERE IS WHY YOU SHOULD NOT LAMINATE CERTIFICATES & OTHER DOCUMENTS.

a. Over heating Can Destroy it
For the hot laminating machine, if not properly operated can destroy your document for good. I’m not a victim of this but I must tell you the honest truth, lamination can burn down paper if not handled well

b. It Flattens The Seal/Marker
Some certificates contains prints, security seals, marks or stamps; when laminated, such certificates or documents is totally flattened out. Some organization, foreign institutes are so serious about these seals, flatten documents may not be easily verifiable or approved.

c. Duplicates Is Impossible
In cases where you will have to duplicate certificates through photocopier, laminated certificates may not produces the best effect due to its reflective polythene texture. Distorted lines, text and colours may as well be created when photocopied.

d. You are asked not to Laminate
Even if you have no other reasons, this is enough. NYSC asked you now to laminate.
Now that you know how much damage you can do to your certificate when laminated, stay away from laminating legal documents cause lamination renders it invalid/altered in some important organisation.

2. Do Not forget any at home
Many PCMs are so much in a hurry that they leave their documents at home. They already packed it last night and forgot to put it inside their box. Chai... A serial mistake you can ever make is to forget your documents at home.
Make sure you check your box and confirm they are intact. Please do not be too hurry and forget your documents.

3. Do not Lost your Documents
Those documents above are your Passport and a legal prove that you are a Prospective Corp members. Make sure you care for it in the bus and make sure they are will you when you get to the camp. Do not misplace any of the documents.
Over enthusiasm, Girls, fellow Corpers, and making friends should not overshadow your mind and make you lost any document.

4. Do not sell
Am laughing so hard as am writing this, but it's a truth you should know. You think what on earth would make someone sell his/her documents? I don't have any reasons to give either. I just want to tell you that no matter the condition and circumstances, do not sell any of your documents.

5. Do Not Fold
The best way to keep your document is to get a waterproof transparent folder for safety. Do not fold and put inside your pocket.
Your documents is not a NairaBet slip, it's your statement of result, your Green Card, medical certificate and your Call Up letter. So please do not fold these documents hoping to save space.

6. Do not carelessly keep
Its one thing to keep your documents, and it's another thing to keep it very well.
You do not assume everybody is a graduate who recognized your statement of result where you kept it carelessly, or think everybody has got their Call Up Letter, so no body need yours.
You do not think because there are Soldier everywhere on camp then you place your documents anyhow.
Your box, your bag etc....
You have to keep it away from public. Keep it safe.

7. Do not give anyone except your Niggas
You are in the middle of something and you see a fellow graduate by your side to hold for you. I agree you have a good memory that once you see someone once, you can easily recognize them. My Dear reader, by the time all of you are in white on white, it will be like film trick.

You will surely have friends, but be careful who you give your documents to. Some people can just be angry at you for no reason.

MIXED reactions trailed the first day of the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which began on Saturday across 642 centres in the country, with internet failure as well as lateness to examination centres reported to have caused hitches to the exercise.

The examination, which was written by more than 57,000 candidates in its opening day took place under tight security, with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) insisting that the exercise was smooth and peaceful nationwide.

The JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, said there was no technological failure throughout the centres.

“I have heard what is happening all over the country and we are pleased with what is happening. Technology is reliable; to have technology problem is an exception. What is normal is for technology to work very well and I think technology has worked properly.

“When the other time, it malfunctioned we did not like it. That was an accident. Now we are enjoying the value of technology and I must thank our partners, MTN and Airtel for doing very beautiful job. I must also thank my colleagues, Vice Chancellors, Rectors and Provosts, who are all over the country participating in the monitoring exercise in the field,” he said.

The examination was held under tight security provided by the operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) who were heavily armed and stationed strategically in all the centres in Abuja.

Sunday Tribune gathered that the examination started late in a few centres including the Digital Bridge Institute centre, where the first session started at about 8 am, an hour behind schedule.

Anger and frustration were clearly evident on the faces of applicants in a number of places, following hitches that marred the UTME, with applicants reportedly lamenting the perceived shoddy preparations by the authorities of the JAMB for the examination.

At the Bafuto College, Egbe, candidates who took part in the morning examination said the exercise was hitch-free.

However, some of the candidates who spoke with Sunday Tribune said a major challenge was the inconvenience occasioned by the commencement of the morning papers.

Slight delays were also witnessed at some centres in Lagos including the CBT Centre at WAEC’s International Office, Agidingbi, where examination was held off for up to an hour in the morning because many candidates did not arrive in time.

Mixed reactions trail exercise

Some of the candidates who spoke in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in some parts of the country decried poor internet network.

According to NAN, some of the candidates in Abuja, Osun, Ebonyi and Nasarawa states expressed dissatisfaction over poor internet networks at their respective CBT centres especially at Kunike International School, Ilesa road in Osogbo, Risewise CBT centre in Kuchikau, Nasarawa State, among others.

Dauda Geoffrey, a candidate at the CBT centre, Kuchikau, told NAN that he experienced some challenges ranging from bad network to system tripping off as a result of power failure.

Miss Faith Attah, another candidate, also noted that the only problem faced in the centre was that of network failure, adding that JAMB authority should look for ways of solving the problems for the next batch of candidates.

Some candidates also decried the unfriendly attitude of some JAMB staff that showed less concern to candidates who needed immediate attention or faced with some immediate challenges.

Master Adebayo Oyelabi, one of the UTME candidates in Osogbo, told NAN on Saturday in Osogbo, that the challenges of bad network and wrong password in the event of logging into the JAMB website, affected him and many other candidates.

He said the computer systems at Kunike denied a lot of candidates’ access to the UTME site, which eventually led to distraction before the intervention of the coordinator and normalcy was later returned.

 

Electricity failure, poor internet mars exercise in Ibadan

Electricity failure and poor internet connection stalled the smooth conduct of the UTME at the Information Communication Technology (ICT) centre of the Polytechnic Ibadan, as many candidates experienced difficulties during the exercise.

Sunday Tribune gathered that the ICT edifice, which was to host three sets of candidates for the UTME examination at its two centers (centre 1 and 2), only had a smooth exercise at centre 1, while system malfunction causing a serious hiccup at the second centre.

In bid to rectify the problem, the UTME officials swiftly conveyed hundreds of affected candidates to the University of Ibadan CBT centre in two buses, Sunday Tribune gathered.

Sunday Tribune learnt that the hiccups also caused delay for more than an hour, as electricity reportedly went off for 30 minutes, precisely, from 10 a.m. to 10.30 a.m.

The development was said to have made the centre rowdy as candidates as well as parents and guardians raised eyebrow on the development.

Speaking to Sunday Tribune, a furious candidate said “the JAMB officials and the management at large are unfair to us. Though they know that the centre doesn’t have what it takes to carry out the exercise, yet they still brought us here. I hope these problems won’t affect my result.”

An embittered official also lamented the technical hitch, saying “despite several efforts and assurance from the authorities of the tertiary institution to carry out a hitch-free exercise, technical hitches still occurred where some candidates had to be taken elsewhere to write their examination.”

It was gathered that candidates also experienced a similar problem during the recently held mock UTME examination in the centre, with candidates having to leave the centre at 10 p.m.

At the second centre in the same institution, however, the JAMB official in charge of the centre, Mr Jimoh Adigun, earlier confirmed to the Sunday Tribune that they had some issues at the outset, which led to the delay in allowing candidates into the centre.

He said: “We were able to rectify it in no time. Also, we have not encountered any form of malpractice, so far; however, we also have put in place adequate security measures to restrain such act.”
