The State Security Service on Wednesday announced a nationwide crackdown on individuals allegedly caught posting inciting materials on the Internet, in a move that could provoke fresh debates about the potency of Nigerian Constitution’s free speech safeguards. The SSS said it had recently observed that some social media users were skewing Nigeria’s history to promote ethnic violence and tip the nation into crisis, a development it said must be urgently reversed through state interference. The secret police’s spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, said in a statement that some “unpatriotic” Nigerians have been using social media platforms to make “unguarded public statements and/or use the social media platforms to instil fear in the minds of citizens”. “These are reflected in the misleading statements and articles being circulated among unsuspecting members of the public. Such inciting materials oftentimes are designed to make or convey false accusations by one group against the other. The SSS said it was “determined to ensure that the tribal chauvinists and mischief makers do not continue to exploit socio-political differences and Internet platforms to threaten the peace and stability of the country.” The SSS vowed to “sustain the apprehension and prosecution of defaulters,” because it would not relent in its quest to prevent crimes and keep Nigeria as an indivisible country. Police in Mukono, Uganda have arrested a woman accused of forcefully feeding her teenage step daughter food mixed with her menstrual blood. Annet Namata’s husband, Unusu Lungu in an interview with Observer, said that he learnt about the shocking incident from his neighbours who intervened to save the teenager’s life when they saw her vomiting on the veranda after the suspect had left to go and trap grasshoppers. He says the curious residents asked the teenager what had happened but she couldn’t speak and instead pointed at a plate of food inside the sitting room. The irritated residents notified Lungu after giving the teenager hot water to wash her mouth, garlic and charcoal powder to swallow. Lungu says he couldn’t withhold his anger and attacked Namata at her workplace. She reportedly confessed and blamed the girl, saying that she removed the blood from a bucket and mixed it with her food. According to Lungu, the suspect fled into hiding when he left to report the matter to local authorities. "She mixed the blood with the sauce made of eggplants. She forced the teenager to eat it threatening her that she would strangle her and vanish. So I asked her to eat the food herself and that is when she confessed and said that indeed the food contained menstrual blood. But she blamed the daughter as the one who went and removed the blood from her knickers and added it to the food so she could be blamed." said Lungu. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has said that the President Buhari-led government is driving Nigeria towards “disaster and instability”. Obasanjo said this in an exclusive interview with Premium Times at his Ibogun Olaogun ancestral home in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, last month. The former president fell apart with Buhari ahead of the 2019 general elections and endorsed the president’s closest rival and his estranged vice president, Atiku Abubakar. Speaking during the interview, Obasanjo noted that although the country has made considerable progress since the new dispensation began in 1999, the pace at which it is currently moving shows the nation may be inching towards disaster and instability. “I think we have no choice but to be on the path for sustainable development. The progress we are making may be questionable Is it fast enough? Is it steady enough? Is it stable enough? Are we taking two steps forward and one step back or one step side-way? You can question that, but we have no choice but to be on (the) path for sustainable development. Any other thing will be a disaster. In fact, the pace at which we are going now is tending more and more toward disaster and instability and unsustainability. No Confidence in the Economy’ The former president argued that there is no confidence in the Nigerian economy today. Rather, he said, the gains recorded in the past have been frittered away over the years. Speaking on what went wrong, the former president explained that Nigeria has failed to do what is right to instill confidence in domestic and foreign investors. The ripple effect of the nation’s indecision, he said, manifests in the state of the economy. Nigeria slipped into recession in 2016 after several contractions in the economy, amidst an unstable naira and rising inflation rates. By the second quarter of 2017, the nation slipped out of recession. Although the government claims that the nation has been put on the path of sustainable growth, unemployment figures have also ballooned within the period. Former Ivory Coast and Arsenal defender Emmanuel Eboue has admitted that his struggles with mental health still continues. The 36-year-old opened up on French television about his battle with depression and admitted he had even considered suicide. In an emotional interview he revealed his problems started when he was suspended by FIFA from all football-related activity for one year. The ban which was given as a result of failing to pay money owed to a former agent, led to the termination of his short-term contract at then Premier League side Sunderland in March 2016. Without a professional club and shattered financially after a bitter and acrimonious divorce case, he admits he had suicidal thoughts. "Sometimes I would lock myself in my room for three or four days. Just thinking and asking what's left. Even today, I still take antidepressants to help me because it is still a long road for me. But here I am hoping others would learn from this" Eboue told RMC Sport's Le Vestiaire (The Locker Room) in France. "Being away from a competitive football pitch for a year was heartbreaking. I had to train by myself, and I was really ashamed because people looked at me differently. Some would say 'look it's Eboue, a Uefa Champions League finalist with Arsenal in 2006', to them it was surprising or shocking. "Personally, I prefer to train in the morning, but there were people who were training at that time. They'd come to take a picture and post it all over [social media]. So I left to train at night." As things got worse he began to lie to his family. "I couldn't train during the day and too embarrassed to stay at home. My children always asked me when I was going to return to the field, so whenever I stepped out in the morning, I pretended to go to work. "Unbeknown to my children I was staying outside and returning home when they were already in bed. I didn't want them to ask me why they didn't see me play on television." After a time away from the media spotlight, to focus on his recovery, Eboue has recently been more willing to be seen in public. As well his appearance on French TV he played for an Arsenal's Legends side against a Real Madrid Legends team last year.
