The Rivers state police command have bursted an armed robbery syndicate that snatched a Lexus SUV from its owner in the Government Reserved Area of Port Harcourt, the state capital yesterday June 9th.

A statement from the command says the three-man robbery gang met their waterloo when they ran into a police checkpoint at Tombia extension near Market Square in GRA Phase II.

The police engaged the robbers in a gun battle.

One of the robbers was killed, one arrested alive while the third escaped with gun injury.

The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State, has cried out over the influx of patients into the hospital due to the inability of other primary and secondary healthcare facilities to meet up with the required standards.

The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Jesse Otegbayo, made this known while speaking with journalists in Ibadan to begin the celebration of his first 100 days in office.

Otegbayo said the burden of healthcare delivery needed to be taken away from tertiary hospitals to primary and secondary healthcare facilities so as to allow doctors focus on their area of specialisation.

He said: ”UCH is oversubscribed and overwhelmed. Most of the state governments have neglected the secondary tier of healthcare such that these hospitals have no accreditation needed to train even the lowest cadre of doctors, which are the house officers.

Low confidence in the quality of care provided by primary and secondary healthcare facilities, have pushed patients to seek general outpatient services from tertiary hospitals.

This has effectively overcrowded the hospital and overburdened our workers. We are calling on state governments to strengthen the general hospitals which form the larger part of the secondary tier of healthcare delivery.”

Actress Blessing Ofoegbu, in her reaction to the on-going marriage and age saga between Regina Daniels and Ned Nwoko, has said she is of the believe that old men are better in marriage than young men.

The actress made this statement while speaking in an interview with Pearlsnews.com where she gave the reason why young ladies now prefer older men for marriage.

She said , “I don’t really bother myself over this Regina Daniels marriage brouhaha. However, everybody knows what they want in life. If Regina is happy and in love with Ned, let him carry on with good faith. I hope the man feels likewise. In life we all deserve to be happy.

Come to think of it age doesn’t really count. Ladies no longer have a thing for young men because they can’t keep one woman. They are worst. They don’t have human feelings any more. These men, or so called chewing gum boy, always jump from one slay queen to another slay queen. So, I don’t blame girls who go for older men that will give them happiness and true love. I see the opportunity, I don’t mind, as long as I am happy in the relationship,” she asserted.

The president of Turkey, Tayyip Erdogan, was the best man at German and Arsenal footballer, Mesut Ozil's wedding on Friday.

With Turkish roots, Ozil, last year, sparked a furore in Germany when he took pictures with Pres. Erdogan before the World Cup.

The 30-year-old later quit international football, citing the "racism and disrespect" he had experienced over the pictures.

Ozil married his fiancée, former Miss Turkey, Amine Gulse, at a luxury hotel on the banks of the Bosphorus.

However, his decision to make Erdogan his best man also sparked criticism in his home country, with the German Chancellor Angela Merkel's chief of staff, saying it "makes one sad" that he would do such, given the reaction to his pictures with him last year.

A woman and her child have been rescued at Lawanson, Surulere after her husband tried using them for rituals.

According to an eye witness;

“Two men in a jeep driving and found a woman tied all over the back seat and also having a baby sitting,crying at the front sit,only to find out that these two men are kidnappers and one of them happened to be the woman's husband.

This woman said she just realized that her husband is into rituals ,she had three children for him but her husband and the other man has taken two of them away and she couldn't find them at all,now they wanted to take her and the third child before people came to their rescue at lawanson and those men were dealt with before the mob handed them over to the police.”

Police in Goraya, Jalandhar along with the CIA staff on Sunday, June 2, arrested a Nigerian woman allegedly involved in drug peddling, and recovered one kg of heroin from her possession.

The woman identified as Beauty of Benin City, Edo State resides at Vikaspuri in New Delhi.

Jalandhar SSP (Rural) Navjot Singh Mahal said that she was arrested near Barra Pind village with a purse containing the drugs.

"Local police recovered 1 kg heroin on the directions of DGP. We had put up check-posts. We stopped the Nigerian woman and recovered 1 kg heroin from her purse," said Navjot Mahal while talking to reporters.

The Police Officer further said that an FIR has been lodged against the woman.

"She came to India on a student visa but she did not take admission anywhere. Her student visa has already expired. Nothing is clear as of now. We will interrogate her to find out where this drug was to be delivered," he added.

Mahal said the Jalandhar rural police had recovered 29.925 kg of heroin during the past 10 months, including 14.760 kg of heroin from 20 foreigners, including 11 men and nine women.

The National president of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Professor Abiodun Ogunyemi has said that the union has shelved its plan to mobilise its members for industrial action to press home its demand for the fulfillment of the agreement it reached with the federal government.

The ASUU president, disclosed this during an interview with newsmen in Ilorin, at the weekend on the sidelines of ‘‘Day of Tributes’’ held in honour of the late Prof Samson Olatunde Oduleye who was a member of the UNILORIN 49+.

The programme which was attended by members of UNILORIN 49 and their families was held at the deceased’s Adewole Estate residence, Ilorin, Kwara state.

The ASUU’s president, however, demanded for an evidence from the federal government to show that the balance of the N25 billion earned academic allowances earlier released to universities had been ‘‘mainstreamed in the 2019 budget’’.

A groom has cancelled his wedding to his bride on the day they were supposed to be celebrating – The wedding day.

This story was narrated by a twitter user who wrote that the guests at the wedding were already seated waiting for the arrival of the couple.

Moments later, the groom walked into the wedding venue and made the shocking announcement.

She wrote;

So today, we went for a wedding
Got there, sat and we were waiting for the arrival of the couple. Only for the groom to walk in and announce that the wedding has been cancelled.

She also stated that the groom was Yoruba, while the bride was from Cross River state.

Senator representing Kogi west, Dino Melaye has joined the race to be the next governor of the state.

Melaye will be contesting for the governorship ticket of the main opposition People Democratic Party (PDP).

He made the declaration today in Ayetoro, Kogi state while formally informing the People Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in his constituency.

Melaye told them that “by the grace of God I will emerge the next Kogi Governor.”
