honeycruize:
Good afternoon everyone

Please I have a question and I would really appreciate everyone’s input, my husband traveled to Canada on a study permit on August 2023, he’s studying a two years course and currently in his second year, since the end of SWOP for diploma student we have been searching for the best way to join him over there, we have a 9 months old son.
We have decided to submit a visitor visa for both my son and myself, we used my Dad as sponsor with a bank statement of over 600 million naira, sitting balance of 18 million and my husband’s 6 months pay slip from his job in Canada, as proof of funds, I personally don’t have any substantial Money in my account and I’ve only been using my OPay account for about a year now, so we are planning to use an investment certificate I have stating that the investments proceeds will be deposited into my account at a later time, while including it in my statement of purpose that I will submit my bank statements when I get the investment
So my question is
1. Should I submit my OPay bank statements
2. Is an investment certified enough for my personal proof of fund?

Thank you
You need to check the big threads on Canada.

Foreign AffairsAC Milan In Talks With DRC For Multiyear Tourism Promo Deal by Cousin9999(op): 9:54pm On Sep 26, 2024
Serie A club AC Milan is in talks with the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo over a “sponsorship deal to promote tourism in the central African country,” according to Borrelli & Schipani of the FINANCIAL TIMES.

Sources noted that the Congolese government has “approved a multimillion dollar three-year sponsorship” of the football club, which would see the club promote Congo as a “tourist destination through banners at its San Siro stadium and a ‘Visit Congo’ logo on the players’ shirts.”

Eastern DRC is beset by a war with rebel group M23, which is “widely believed to receive backing from Rwanda’s government and troops.” The Italian foreign ministry recommends Italian citizens “avoid all non-essential travel to the country.” Borrelli & Schipani noted Rwanda already uses sports sponsorship to “advertise itself as a tourist destination.” Visit Rwanda, the country’s tourism organization, has commercial partnerships with Premier League club Arsenal, Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain, and Bundesliga club Bayern Munich (FINANCIAL TIMES, 9/25).

Six years trapped at sea: ‘I was beaten with barbed stingray tails and scalded by boiling water’

Looking back, Prasert Sriwaurai isn’t sure what stopped the crew from killing their skipper. But he can’t forget the anguish that drove them to discuss, in whispered voices, whether a body thrown into the depths of the ocean would ever be discovered.

For years, the fishermen had been trapped at sea in brutal conditions – forced to work or face being beaten with barbed stingray tails, scalded by boiling water and woken up with hammer blows. For many desperate to escape the boat, murder felt like the only option.

“I just feel pity, thinking about it,” said Sriwaurai, now a 60-year-old monk in a remote village in northeastern Thailand. “I feel pitiful for myself and others. We just wanted to go home, but were stopped and pushed to the point where we discussed killing. It’s pitiful.”

Sriwaurai’s six years held captive are a far cry from the life he expected when he joined the boat in 2009, lured by the promise of a monthly salary of 10,000 baht (£230) and decent conditions.
But they warn that major loopholes persist, and momentum to tackle them is waning. According to an index produced by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime, Thailand remained among the “worst performers” in terms of prevalence of IUU fishing in its fleet in 2021, alongside countries including Taiwan and China.

“As part of the promises to the European Union, Thailand had to amend its trafficking in persons law, to also make forced labour a crime under Thai law,” Phil Robertson, deputy director of Human Rights Watch, told a recent panel. “But so far, there’s been almost no action by the Thai authorities on issues of forced labour.”

He added that the government has done “very little” to educate law enforcement agencies about what forced labour is, contributing to a lack of “practical implementation of the law”. None of the fleet owners or captains who have committed abuses have gone to prison, for instance.

“The Commission is very concerned about Thailand’s legislative proposal,” a spokesperson said, adding that the bloc considers the changes as a “substantive relaxation of the current rules” which are “not in line with Thailand’s obligations under international law”.

“Thailand has so far been considered by the Commission as one of the most successful IUU dialogues between the EU and a third country, and one of the best examples of constructive cooperation in this field,” the spokesperson said. “[The reforms] contributed to increase transparency and achieve a sustainable, legal and ethical fisheries sector.”

But they added: “The Commission will not hesitate to take all necessary action if it considers that Thailand is acting as a non-cooperating country in the fight against IUU fishing.”

The Thai government has been insistent that trade would not be affected by new guidelines, stressing that the EU – with whom it is currently negotiating a free trade agreement – makes up only around six per cent of seafood exports.

But other countries – including the US, UK, Japan and South Korea – also have or are developing seafood import restrictions designed to screen for and prevent illegal fishing and labour abuses. Almost 60 per cent of Thailand’s exports currently go to such countries.

“If fully implemented, these changes would have huge implications for Thailand’s incredibly important seafood export industry… [and] open the floodgates for illegal fishing and poor working conditions,” said Dominic Thomson, deputy director and Southeast Asia project manager for the Environmental Justice Foundation.

“Our analysis shows that seafood trade to just six countries plus the EU worth $3.3 billion in 2022 would be jeopardised as these markets introduce new trade instruments designed to restrict the flow of IUU or slave-caught seafood into their countries.

He added that the rollbacks would contradict the international consensus, as countries are increasingly moving towards stricter and better monitored fishing industries.

“Thailand has already done the hard work over the last eight years to build itself up as a market leader in this regard,” he told the Telegraph. “U-turning now would serve to wipe out this hard-won competitive advantage and threaten the survival of the industry itself… We have only a limited window to halt these changes.”

Tuna, prawns and crab from Thailand could be removed from supermarket shelves in the West if the southeast Asian country waters down laws designed to protect seafarers, say European officials.

Investigations a decade ago revealed that fishermen were being trapped on Thai ships for years as modern slaves. Many were brutalised and reports of murder also surfaced, while illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing flourished.

The situation was calmed at the time by the introduction of legislation designed to protect workers and international sanctions were avoided.

Now, however, Thai lawmakers are drafting new legislation which looks set to drastically weaken those protections.

According to analysis from the Environmental Justice Foundation, an international environmental NGO, they include amendments dropping the necessity of a crew list when leaving the docks, and enabling the transfers of workers and products from one boat to another at sea.

“The new Thai government of [prime minister] Srettha Thavisin is pursuing a policy of human rights and environmental backsliding in the fishing sector out of a motivation that contains equal parts of greed, ignorance and denial,” said Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director at Human Rights Watch.

“If the proposed changes in law go through, Thailand will return to the bad old days of at sea transshipment of product and fishermen that fueled the systematic and pervasive use of trafficked labour to underpin IUU fishing schemes.”

Prodprasop Suraswadi, an advisor to the prime minister, told a recent panel in Bangkok that the changes were needed because current legislation is overly bureaucratic and burdensome, contributing to reduced exports and profits. He added that they were enacted by an unpopular and undemocratic military-backed government, following the 2014 coup.

A spokesperson for Move Forward party, which supports the changes, added: “Our stance on amending the fishery law is to amend the punishment clauses to be fairer and more proportionate to the crime.” He insisted some of the changes would not “create loopholes that could lead to labour abuses”.

But an EC spokesperson told the Telegraph that a “yellow card” – which was first introduced in 2015 – or other sanctions could be applied if plans to undo regulations continued. This could potentially restrict or even halt trade, hitting Western consumers.

I think prefectship positions should be by selection. It’s too early in the life of the children to introduce them to politics. The adverse effect of politics will always be there whether it’s general elections or primary school election. The losers will always be aggrieved, hate will be introduced in their young minds, some parents may start accusing the young voters of tribalism and implant same in their children’s mind.

Some kids will never want to compete anymore because they never want the humiliation of losing again. At this age they should all be getting participation trophies to encourage participation.
But if they don't learn how to be corrupt leaders from youth, how will they be horrible politicians as adults? grin We have to start when they're young.

Foreign AffairsTanzania Arrests Opposition Leaders Ahead Of Planned Protests by Cousin9999(op): 1:55am On Sep 26, 2024
Tanzania police arrested leaders of the main opposition party after they asked supporters to join banned street protests to demand an end to political abductions and murders.

Those arrested on Monday include Chadema’s Vice Chairman Tundu Lissu, a fiery critic of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government.

Police “have refused to say where they have taken him,” said John Mrema, a party spokesman.

Before his arrest, Lissu posted on X that armed police had surrounded his house and that he would be taken to a police station.

Chadema said police have also surrounded the home of party chairman, Freeman Mbowe, effectively placing him under house arrest.

The two men were expected to lead unauthorized street demonstrations on Monday. Anti-riot police have been patrolling the streets of Dar es Salaam and elsewhere across the country for the past three days to deter the protests.

Opposition leaders have accused Hassan of rowing back on promised political reforms and cracking down on democracy ahead of elections in November and next year. Police denied involvement in political abductions and murders and have pledged a thorough investigation.

Foreign AffairsDemocratic Republic Of The Congo Releases 648 Prisoners To Ease Overcrowding by Cousin9999(op): 1:45am On Sep 26, 2024
In 2020, it was estimated that only 6% of the prisoners were actually serving sentences - the rest were stuck in DR Congo's legal system where cases can drag on for years.
The justice minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Constant Mutamba, announced the conditional release of 648 inmates from the country’s largest prison on Saturday amid efforts to ease overcrowding. The 648 prisoners released with parole conditions included 73 adults and eight juveniles.

Makala Central Prison, built in 1957, is designed to accommodate 1,500 inmates but currently houses over 12,000 prisoners. According to Amnesty International, prisoners are not provided with adequate food, drinking water or medicine, and some have starved to death. Under international law, government authorities have a duty to care for people in prisons, including to protect their rights to life, health, safety and security. According to the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners, people in prison are to be treated with dignity and have prompt access to adequate food with nutrient value.

The conditional release follows an escape attempt at Makala Central Prison earlier this month. During the jailbreak, twenty-four were shot after ignoring warnings, while the rest died from crushing or suffocation. The total death toll was 129, while fifty-nine were injured. Earlier this month, DRC Interior Minister Jacquemin Shabani stated that several women were also raped during the attempted jailbreak.

During the announcement, the Minister of Justice referred to the jailbreak and condemned any attempt to disrupt public order inside penitentiary establishments.
In an effort to reduce prison overcrowding , DRC announced an array of releases of inmates in recent months. In July, the DRC government had stated that at least 7,000 inmates were to be granted conditional release from the Makala Central Prison in a bid to ease overcrowding at the facility. In late August, authorities announced another release of 527 inmates from the prison.

Therein lies the tension for Europe: the concept of a narco-state has always felt very far away to Europeans, who can tend to figure the corrupt states producing their drugs are someone else’s problem. But Albania’s central positioning in the drug industry has brought the problem closer, right at a time when Albanians are hoping to become more connected to the EU’s economic engine.

CrimeSpanish Police Arrest Five People Over Fake Brad Pitt Scam by Cousin9999(op): 1:23am On Sep 26, 2024
Spanish police have arrested five people accused of [b]scamming two women out of €325,00[/b]0 (£271,000) by posing as the Hollywood star Brad Pitt online.

The suspects made contact with the women on an internet page for fans of the Oscar-winning actor and led them to believe “they had a sentimental relationship with him”, Spain’s Guardia civil police force said in a statement on Monday. Posing as Pitt, the members of the gang then allegedly encouraged the women to invest in various projects that did not exist. One woman, from the southern region of Andalusia, was defrauded of €175,000, while the other, from the northern Basque Country, lost €150,000.

“The cybercriminals, to capture the victims, had studied their social networks and made a psychological profile of them, thus discovering that both women were two vulnerable people, lacking in affection and in a state of depression,” police said.

“They also used instant messaging platforms to exchange messages and emails with the two women until they reached a point where they believed they were chatting via WhatsApp with Brad Pitt himself, who promised them a romantic relationship and a future together.”

Police arrested five people in the southern region of Andalusia, including the suspected leaders of the group.

They raided five homes as part of their operations, seizing several mobile phones, bank cards, two computers and a diary “in which the phrases used by the fraudsters to deceive their victims were written down”.

Officers were able to recover €85,000 defrauded from the two women.

Truck Driving (in the US)

It's one of the few jobs I can think of where you can train for a few weeks, and then be working and make $70K+ (USD) your first year. Plumbers aren't doing that. And there's a shortage, so it's not hard to get in. One of the reasons there's a shortage is because it's so easy to get your own equipment and drive indie. Another reason is that it's not glamorous (long days, away from home for weeks, sleep in your truck, etc.).

I think a lot of the industry in Canada is full of Indians, and Canadian salaries are lower in general. You don't want to work there.

But you have to do your training in the US or Canada to work in the US (they also accept training from federal government in Mexico, but I doubt you can access that). Training isn't expensive or hard to access. You just have to figure out how you're going to (legally) get there. Not as easy now.

WATCH FOR SIGNS OF TROUBLE
Watering tomatoes isn't an exact science. The best thing you can do is watch for signs that you're giving them too much or too little water and make adjustments as you go.

Underwatering
Here are some signs you should keep an eye out for:

Wilted leaves in the morning
Tomato leaves curling
Dry soil
Stunted growth
If you notice these signs, try slightly increasing the amount of water you're giving them. Eventually, you'll find the sweet spot between too much water and too little water.

Overwatering
If you’ve been watering too much you might notice these signs:

Yellow leaves
Dark or mushy roots
Soggy soil
Cracked or rotting fruit
Showing signs of disease
If you notice these signs, pull back some on your watering. You should keep to the same schedule but give them less water each time first.

WATER NEEDS BY GROWTH STAGE
Figuring out how often to water tomatoes will vary based on their growth stage. Learning about each stage briefly will help you adjust your watering routine to fit their needs at each moment.

Seedlings: Watering tomato plants enough when they're seedlings is vital if you want them to grow successfully past this point. Make sure the soil is damp well below the surface so that good roots can establish themselves early on.

Pro tip: Gently water your tomato seedlings with a spray bottle, usually 4-5 squirts is enough. Learn more about growing tomatoes from seed.

Young transplants: Once you’ve transplanted your young tomatoes out into the garden, give them a good deep soak. Monitor the soil moisture and give them another soak when it is dry. Consistency is important during this time.

Mature tomatoes: As the plants mature, mulch around the base of your plants to keep the moisture in. Keep a close eye on the weather. If it gets really hot, water them more often. If it rains, skip or reduce your watering. Place a simple rain gauge near your tomatoes to know how much water they receive.

Fruiting plants: Keep an extra close eye on them throughout the day and continue to watch for signs of over or underwatering so you can make adjustments and ensure the tomatoes you're starting to see turn out well. Overwatering at this stage may cause fruit to crack or rot. Underwatering may result in low fruit production.

AgricultureRe: Your Complete Guide To Perfectly Watering Tomato Plants by Cousin9999(op): 11:33pm On Sep 22, 2024
Sprinkler: A sprinkler may sound like a convenient option for watering tomato plants, but it's the least favorable option.

Sprinklers irrigate from above the plants, which gets water on the leaves. This increases the chance of diseases and pests damaging your tomatoes. Plus, the moisture evaporates quickly, leaving your plants without the water they need to thrive.

Finally, a sprinkler isn't easy to target to one particular area. So you can end up watering other plants at the same time, which might lead to weeds or overwatering other things you're trying to grow.

The bottom line: Watering tomato plants doesn't need to be a complicated process. The most important thing is to keep the soil damp throughout the growing season and avoid the leaves whenever possible.

The best option is drip irrigation but setting this up has the highest upfront costs. Using a hose or watering can with the appropriate setup can be just as effective and less expensive.

TOMATO WATERING TIPS
Watering your tomatoes doesn’t have to be tricky. Follow these tips and you’ll be on your way to success:

-Establish deep, healthy roots by watering slowly and deeply
-Water in the morning to the keep the soil moist through the heat of the day
-Always water at the base of the plant — watering from above invites disease
-Check tomatoes growing in pots often since they dry out quickly
-Be consistent — fluctuations in water supply lead to cracking and blossom end rot
-Tomatoes need 1-2 inches of water per week, depending on the weather
-Occasionally add an organic liquid fertilizer to produce plump, juicy tomatoes

METHODS FOR WATERING TOMATO PLANTS
When watering tomato plants there are a variety of different methods you can try. The most important thing is that you water them the correct amount.

Watering can: If you opt to use a watering can, one with a rose spout will give you the best results. A spout like this disperses the water in several smaller streams rather than one large one. Something like this is preferable because too harsh of a stream can displace soil that the plant needs to continue steadily growing.

Pro tip: Watering right at the plant's roots can help keep disease and pests away compared to watering from above the plant.

Hose: If you choose to use a hose to water your tomato plants, attach a nozzle or watering wand to help the water flow out slowly and gently for the same reasons mentioned above.

Pro tip: A soaker hose is an easy way to water all your tomatoes at once. Water seeps out of small pores along the length of the hose. Simply place the hose so it runs past the base of each plant and turn on the water!

Drip irrigation: A drip irrigation system is one of the most effective ways to water tomato plants. For this method, water is run through small tubes placed at the base of each plant. It's effective because the water is delivered right to the roots of the plant.

Another benefit is that it makes it easy to ensure all your tomato plants receive the same amount. So a tiny adjustment can fix them all.

Pro tip: For maximum convenience, connect your drip lines to your irrigation timer. Then program them to run on certain days and times for at least a few minutes. Adjust the schedule as needed or supplement with hand watering.
