The Nigerian police is bad but the police in the US is not exactly better with extra-judicial killings of unarmed black men. In fact the violent equipments used by most police departments in the US are on par with most militaries. Does that excuse the Nigerian police, no but picking and choosing to suit personal dispositions is not objective. And generally police the world over can be a pain in the ar.se though I think police officers in western European countries are the best. We all know about our police, and until something is done about them my advice just avoid them.

I beg to defer as to the armed forces. The Nigerian Army is a very professional Army, the best in Africa and one of the most professional in the world. If you choose to list the negatives there are more positives to them from holding the integrity of Nigeria together to peace enforcement and peace keeping operations around the world.

But the focus here is the military response in Konshisha let's not deviate. It is unpardonable under the circumstances to allow a community the affront to murder unprovoked an officer and soldiers of the Nigerian Army in cold blood while on legitimate duties. That is unacceptable and must be met with the appropriate response. You have to understand how militaries function as a professional organization one of which is accountability for every man, material and weapon. It beholves the leaders there to produce the criminal elements who did this. I for one I'm terribly pained by the unprovoked loss of those soldiers for no just cause. This is not a jungle.

What the Nigerian army did in Benue can be classified as a war crime.

I see absolute no reason in killing unarmed people. Whether is a man, woman or child.

Is nothing but crime against humanity.

Well, in Nigeria, there is always a justification for killing people.

You just said about Ghana "an Army captain they thought was a thief". You see the difference right there. This was not the case here nor was it the case in Odi or Zaki Biam. In all these cases they saw armed uniformed servicemen on duty, ambushed and killed them in cold blood while hiding amongst innocent civilians leading to the reprisals you see which has been the basic counter insurgency tactics of every other military force including the United States to get those communities to give up the assailants. Hate it, yes but in war they say all is fair. Those soldiers are also people's kids and benefactors.

It happens in other countries like Nigeria not unlike Nigeria. I seek not to bore you with that.

The good thing for the Army is that these are disparate groups and I can tell you the Army is more than a match for them. You only just need to keep them divided. Tension In Benue Community As 10 Missing Soldiers Are Found Dead

No fewer than 10 troops of Nigerian Army and one military police officer have been found dead in Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State.

The development generated tension in the community as the army authorities deployed troops to fish out the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

In a statement made available to journalists, Nigerian Army spokesman, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Yerima, confirmed the killings of the troops by yet-to-be-identified individuals.

Yerima explained that the bodies of slain troops were immediately evacuated, adding that efforts are ongoing to track down those who perpetrated the crime in order to bring them to justice.

He said, ”Nigerian Army troops operating in Benue State came under attack while on routine operational task.

”The troops comprising one officer and ten soldiers were initially declared missing which prompted the deployment of a joint search and rescue team comprising NA troops and personnel of Operation Whirl Stroke.

”The search and rescue team unfortunately found all the missing troops dead in Konshisha LGA of Benue State.

”While the bodies of the slain troops were evacuated immediately, efforts are ongoing to track down the perpetrators of this heinous crime with a view to bringing them to Justice.”

The Nigerian Army, however, appealed to the public to volunteer useful information that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

Yerima maintained that Army remains determined to ensure that the unprovoked attack does not disrupt the general peace being enjoyed by the local inhabitants.

According to him, the COAS has directed commanders on the ground to ensure sustained efforts in order to fish out and deal decisively with these bad elements who are threatening the peace in the area.

Daily Trust reports that Benue, which has been a hotbed of clashes, has been enjoying relative peace in recent times.

DLD I guess that will suffice for your moniker if you permit I guess most agree not least me that Nigeria as it is right now is in a mess but it is still a sovereign state and no government any where including western ones will sit by and accept the killing of state agents or destruction of symbols of governmental authority. This is just the reality. We can argue about carrot and stick approach or stick approach whatever and all of the above but it is only expedient for state organs to first respond with force or whatever mechanism of security at its disposal to any known assailants or their sponsors aid and abetting the crime. These atrocities been perpetrated in Nigeria in the name of agitation, communal violence whether against hapless citizens unprotected by the government or security agencies sent to protect them is an affront on any civilization. Having said that the military is only doing what any other military elsewhere will do under the circumstances but it is the job of the CDS to advise the government of the day of the instruments of power available for peace enforcement and peace making and that includes not only the use of force but other options which includes dialogue. I expect that in some form in the coming weeks as they settle in but first the new chiefs will only assert their authority. This was the case with the Niger Delta militants.

In the end we can help by putting out the fire rather than stoking it. It can start here on Nairaland. We have come a long way. This country when you have the means is one of the sweetest places on earth, I'm sure many agree. We can proffer solutions to our myriad of problems to bring that means to every citizen. Nigeria’s Defense Space Administration (DSA) played host to the U.S. Secretary of Air Force, Barbara Barrett who is currently visiting African allies to develop new partnerships. During the visit, Barrett introduced the first-ever collaboration between the United States Air Force (USAF) and the DSA.

Barrett’s visit to Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, happened between January 4 and 5, 2021, where she was received by members of Nigeria’s legislative parliament, the National assembly, and senior military officials at the Ministry of Defense, which hosts the DSA.

In a statement made available by the U.S. embassy and consulate in Nigeria, Secretary Barrett’s visit highlighted the positive trajectory of the military cooperation between the U.S. and Nigeria. Her discussions covered a range of defence and security matters of mutual interest, including the 2021 delivery of the A-29 Super Tucano aircraft. On the partnership with the DSA, she conveyed the importance of addressing the novel security challenges in space. Noting that the U.S. Space Force recently marked its first anniversary following its establishment last year, Barrett initiated a bilateral engagement on the necessity of developing a long-term vision for security cooperation in space.

The statement disclosed further that the U.S would deliver 12 A-29 Super Tucano aircraft as scheduled in 2021. Along with the delivery, the U.S will train 60 Nigerian military pilots, instructors, and aircraft maintenance specialists over 24 months. The Nigerian pilots will train on the same aircraft they will fly in combat operations against insurgent groups and terrorist organisations.

This is due to the size of the terrain, lack of precision guided and stand-off weapons, plus a lack of systems to set up and maintain an integrated kill-chain from finding the enemy to maintaining ISR presence over him, to ultimately finishing him off and gathering intelligence to be exploited for analysis purposes. The JF-17 multi-role fighter and A-29 Super Tucano solves this problem instantly. One kinda wishes we had these platforms much earlier. But one has to give credit to the NAF. It is doubtful any other nation could have pulled off what the NAF did with the platforms at its disposal. Nigeria’s counter insurgency area of operations covers the three northeastern states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, thats over 125,000 square kilometres of land area.

This complex terrain encompasses the Nigerian side of Lake Chad with hundreds of islands, the massive Sambisa Forest Area, the Gwoza Hills, and the Mandara Mountains range which mostly hem in the region from the east. Massive aerial bombardment began July-September 2013 with the NAF employing Mi-35P Hind attack helicopters, in the opening salvo of what was evolving into a campaign of aerial bombardment against Boko Haram held territory. This operation was to be named Operation Zaman Lafiya.

The air component was under Boko Haram threat to and rotary-wing operations, with Mi 24V/Mi-35P attack helicopters, F-7NI and Alpha Jets coming under enemy anti-aircraft fire of up to 30mm caliber, forcing them to fly higher in order to deliver strike packages.

What the NAF did next is funny. The NAF began to fit longer-range rockets, removed from its MiG-21s, onto the attack helicopters. By August 2014, the Nigerian air force had carried out 2,468 ground-attack missions against Boko Haram, in addition to conducting 1,443 surveillance missions with its DA-42s, ATR-42s and King Air 350Is, plus 1,479 airlift transport missions. The MI-35P helicopters alone flew over 900 combat sorties. This does not include providing air support to the regional MNJTF’s Operation.

Between Dec. 25, 2015 and the end of January 2016, the NAF conducted 286 strike missions against BHT targets, for a total of 536 flight hours. During the 18 months between July 2015 and mid-January 2017, the NAF carried out 2,105 missions across the entire aerial spectrum.

Perhaps more impressive is that the NAF suffered relatively few losses directly related to the Combat. Two Chengdu F-7Nis, one Alpha Jet, two Mi-35Ps, one A109LUH, and at least two Mi-17s have been shot down or destroyed in accidents over active battlefields.

The NAF has come a long way to become the largest and most combat experienced air force in Sub Sahara Africa, surpassing every country in capital and strategic assets and highly sophisticated ISR gathering platforms. It could be much better given Nigeria's resources though.

The NAF has come a long way to become the largest and most combat experienced air force in Sub Sahara Africa, surpassing every country in capital and strategic assets and highly sophisticated ISR gathering platforms. It could be much better given Nigeria's resources though.

Nigeria now has the most modern technology

This is so brilliant. And one thing people forget is these are mostly Nigerians we are fighting here, very intelligent and bright people who have an affinity to the land and their cause such like the Kanuri people who make up boko haram which is also a driving force for recruitment. If this was somewhere else it would have been since over.

The Senegalese were the first to intervene and they committed more bodies and equipments than the entire participating countries.

The armed reconnaissance Air Force operated by the NAF with the capability to strike was the first and only to over fly The Gambia specifically over State House Banjul where Jammeh was holed up and towards the sea and other centers of strategic interest making a statement of intent to enforce the ECOWAS mandate and Alhaji Prof. Dr. Yahya Jammeh got the message. That's what strategic assets can get you without sweat. Yes the Senegalese deployed more men and equipment because it was natural to do so sharing culture and borders with The Gambia but that deployment is incomparable with Nigeria's. The presence of Nigerian Navy SBS commandos also made a whole host of options possible. That was the military plan by ECOWAS Chiefs of Defence lead by Nigeria and it worked. No one expected a confrontation.

Yes there may have been hype by the guys but that's what victors do. Nigeria projecting power that far in the midst of a high intensity war in the North-East and in low level conflicts in the six geo-political zones of the country is no mean feat. It shows capacity, capability and means.

The military is simply an instrument of extreme violence to bring about the fundamental objectives of the government where all other tools of persuasion fails. Let no one make any mistake the Nigerian Armed Forces is fully capable of meeting all envisaged threats in the interim not only home but in the region. It can fight with effect on multiple fronts. It is heavily armed for contemporary threats and arming for future wars and nothing in the immediate neighborhood comes even close. Provoking the military now is completely unnecessary and yes the non-combatants pay the heavy price.

The leaders in the region should act quickly. Violence does not pay and even more foolish against the Nigerian Army. This is not Libya or Sudan or your average African country. ESN or whatever they are called don't come close to ISWAP which is the only known existential threat to Nigeria something that is no longer the case and that's because of the exploits of our Army.

Those are different from what's presently going on with IPOB and ESN. In Zaki biam for example, it was a retaliation for the killing of about 19 soldiers by a militia group. What's happening today involving ESN is no agitation against the military. They got no business with the military, what they have business with is the fulanis and their rampaging herdsmen killing people on another man's soil. Biafra can't just sit and watch, that's why they set up ESN just like oduwa republic set up Amotekun. The ESN aren't killing Nigerian soldiers and will never commit such heinous atrocity.
