Nobody is invading anybody. In a hypothetical scenario Nigeria could and can invade SA. Dunno what u mean by Land Vessels, that's strange to me. Also theirs nothing like "Limited Human and Logistics Transport Planes". The NAF is currently operating at over 80% mission capability rate (MCR) which was non-existent when it fought simultaneous wars in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Same with the NN which enforced a Naval Blockade of the two states in the 90's despite credible external threat in support of rogue national forces and human-heart-eating-drug-fueled rebel armies that together numbered well over 20,000. In Liberia alone well over 1000 Nigerian troops perished over the course of the war which ended on our terms - A clear classroom military victory for the history books. Don't follow the pessimistic crowd. Now, to not be deluded it is not expedient to go to war even if you think you can win cos no one wants to be an occupation army in modern times. It is just not worth it except there's enough rich mineral resources to covet at least for a time while installing a puppet regime. SADC is not as dynamic as ECOWAS. SA is not exactly to SADC what Nigeria is to ECOWAS. Nigeria is a hegemon, SA is not. Those states ritually oppose SA. Just look at Zambia, Madagascar and Tanzania's response to the recent xenophobia. Many SADC states defer to Nigeria. The Namibian president more than once recently described Nigeria as Africa's superpower. They enjoy our extensive support in many fields that SA has no answer for like the Technical Aid Corp of Nigeria. eSwatini's King enjoys our patronage. Malawi depends on the big brother for defence against Tazania for scarce resources. Tanzania covets our investments. Not just SADC, Nigeria sends experts all over Africa. Rwanda enjoys our cover. Most of these states do what they do cos of Nigeria's backing and would do anything to please the big brother knowing we always deliver when the chips are down. In fact sometimes our Generals are Defence Chiefs overseas which is unique to only Nigeria in Africa. That said, SA is a paper tiger whose reach is exaggerated. Yes it is the dominant economy in SADC but it is not the regional military power. Zimbabwe and Namibia are credible military threats to SA and so is Mozambique and Tanzania. In ECOWAS Nigeria has no competitor militarily, economically or socially and Nigeria defines the agenda in West and Central Africa without any challenge. That's the true definition of regional hegemony. Nigeria far outweighs SA in regional influence both economically and militarily. In a trade war Nigeria would win. Nigeria's people are better educated and resourceful and they come in numbers - something reflected in its military - that's first the best weapon of war. We continue to pride ourselves as having the best educated and trained officers in Africa which is acknowledged world wide. For a land invasion, Namibia and Zimbabwe is a probable choice for an armoured brigade and mechanized infantry to roll in but in warfare you look for where your enemy is weakest to punch. Malawi is good for concentration of forces. The sea is an option and the NN is well capable of showing up off Cape Town offshore until sea mines and threats of the probable lone SAN submarine are dealt with. But its doable. And the easiest of them all is getting the troops and equipment down south for which even an Oil-Well dangled in the region will make any of those states grant landing and overflight rights and host bases along with the necessary military infrastructure to shore up the troops before an invasion. The hard part is what comes after Pretoria falls. We don't need SA and its intractable problems. A powerful state is judged by its ability to muster sizable forces, deploy and sustain same in distant lands something Nigeria has proven over and over again. Nigeria's main weakness is bad political leadership for its citizens at home as we see with the current rule of the mob in Abuja led by the APC government of Buhari.

The Nigerian Army has a mix of light armoured, armoured and soft skinned vehicles not palatable to many but realistically you go to war with the Army you have not the Army you might want. It will take years to fully meet all requirements and no Army has that luxury. Pls stop this whining of AFV, IFV, APC it is right up there in the field perhaps not in adequate numbers to go round the attack columns but it's there, maybe u need glasses to see it. As far back as the civil war Nigeria has had motorized units, mechanized units, amphibious units, paratroopers u name it the whole hog of combat elements needed for engagement. The Nigerian army is not a paper tiger. If u need help go to the Nigerian Army website, there's enough basic info.

Besides we are not in a conventional dig that requires a calvary to run through thin defensive lines to gain ground which is why you see the Army going for more MRAPs the ideal for CT/COIN. CT/COIN is a slow affair

ISWAP/BHT is not UNITA. The former employs asymmetric means as a strategy of remaining relevant in a war it cannot win - The Nigerian Army is not going anywhere for these are our lands. Give a threat of nationalising South Africa's interest in Nigeria and deploy a mechanized infantry battalion of the Nigerian Army to Malawi or eSwatini as a precaution to protect its citizens in an eventuality of total break down of law and order in South Africa against Nigerians there. The difference here is the ideology. In ISWAP/BHT we have islamafacists terrorists who come to die not necessarily to win the war but to inflict as much pain as possible on the superior military power it fights. UNITA in itself was crushed by Angola with support from many countries like Cuba and Nigeria.

Nigeria especially stood out in the liberation struggle of many African states with material and financial support including in some cases direct clandestine military support by way of military advisers and weapons. So pls when attempting to bash Nigeria stop looking in the wrong places. The Nigerian Military today is better, is still very powerful, highly capable and maintains the necessary deterrence capabilities against contemporary african states including Angola.

Just to comment on the super fob strategy. This is actually a proven method of defeating insurgencies (tactically because defeating an ideology is a whole separate issue). If it's done right it can really hurt BH.

Something I advocated for more than a year to collapse those FOBs (In many cases they were just Combat Outposts in remote areas). Too little too late but better than doing nothing. ISWAP has already stolen a lot of weapons and ammunition to hold out for still longer. Apparently the Army High Command has given way to the tactical thinking of newer and younger commanders. These junior officers have had some tours up north and understand the terrain and psychology of ISWAP better. Understanding your enemy is very key in a counter-insurgency war. In the last one year the terrorists have been the one's choosing the time and place of battle a proven tactic that has bogged down and cost enormous treasure in blood and money known powerful armies like the US military. That's what the Viet Cong and Ho Chi Minh did to the Americans in Vietnam. Again, I insist the Nigerian Armed Forces should be commended for holding ISWAP/BHT our mortal enemy the worst ever seen by human kind at bay for ten years with very little.

We have already been through 3 presidents in this war and if new tactical measures are not evolved every often we might just go through another 2 presidents before some measure of defeat is put on ISWAP/BHT. Right now it is not beyond doubt the terrorists will seek ways to exploit the new tactical posture of Super Camps and aggressive patrols nearby not least to embarrass the Nigerian Army and weaken morale.

Okay, I know this isn't the thread for this issue, but since it was brought up, I can't resist chipping in my own opinion and leaving it at that.

The current spate of attacks against foreign Africans in RSA is as a result of decades of heinously criminal activities such as drug peddling, human trafficking, fraud and so on, perpetrated by Nigerians and other Africans in RSA. Due to negligence and poor policing on the part of the South Africans, the people decide occasionally to take matters into their own hands and deal with those they perceive as criminals. These attacks are not specifically targeted at Nigerians as we like to think, it affects many African people including Zimbabweans, Ghanaians, Ethiopians etc, and I don't like to use the term "xenophobia" to describe what is going on there.

We see a lot of these people dealing in drugs and criminality, the same way they do here in Nigeria and all over the world, bringing in their relatives one by one to join in the hellish enterprise. When it is chrismas period,they go to their villages to flaunt the ill gotten wealth and acquire chieftaincy titles.

While I condemn the destruction of lives and properties by South Africans, I also recognize that these events are as a result of genuine grievances that occasionally dissolve into mob action. We must therefore, call on both the governments of Nigeria and South Africa to form a bi-national cooperation on eradication of these violent activities and their causes. RSA must also strengthen it's laws and policing system to enable the criminals who are causing these issues to be fished out and prosecuted.

This issue is reminiscent of the fulani herdsmen crisis. The same Nigerians who are calling for the annihilation of all fulani people due to the actions of a few marauders among them, will be at the forefront of emotional outbursts and caustic vibrations against the actions of these South African mobs. Now, Nigerians(and other Africans) are being treated in South Africa the exact same way many Nigerians want fulani herdsmen to be treated in Nigeria. Should we say Nigerians are xenophobic?.

It's all about cause and effect. Nobody is mad. Everyone is reacting against a perceived slight. Nigerians feel the Fulanis are destroying the country and we want them all gone, South Africans feel African migrants are detroying their country and they want them all gone.

In short, we should all calm down. Look at the fact and call on the governments to address these issues affecting our countries. Nigerians should not give in to reckless actions such as looting of South African owned businesses and such, we should instead focus on building a better country for ourselves.

Evarn you really need help. I have often told you that you mostly just type to be heard even if u mean well. But first you learn to separate facts from fiction and emotion from reality and take a pinch of salt of history next time you write on such matters as these etcetera.

Do you know right now the South African foreign minister is holding brief for his xenophobic people and characterizing every Nigerian as a drug dealer much like Trump to the Mexicans. In fact our foreign intelligence has it that most of the drug hustlers on the streets are from Gambia, Guinea and most other unlikely places even the Caribbean and not Nigerians.

I recommend you do some more reading to understand people's. Just to be clear "nigh every South African is xenophobic including its government one way or another" owing to it's long history of racism and apartheid. The Nigerian government knows it just like every other African country but everyone knows the ire is directed against Nigerians who they perceive in their sub-conscious minds are greater people than them. What they do is borne out of this misconception that we are their competition in Black Africa. It's a mindset that's not gonna go away until we actually do something to rub it in their face that we are no peers. That's what great powers do to establish hegemony.

Right now the federal government is on the right path something that might just be the only good thing it's done if it follows through. Nigeria holds the cards.

In saner climes with the arguments already put forward at the tribunal that we have an unqualified individual occupying the office of president he would have since resigned or the populace we rise up against him. But here we are and legal wrangling goes on making mockery of us as a people that certificates are no longer necessary to obtain jobs. What a travesty it would be if this man Muhammadu Buhari is not thrown out of office. Nigeria right now is in need of a savior. God help us all.

We are not in short supply of good and effective commanders and boots on the ground to do the job. I could list them but under the present inept government competence is disregarded for loyalty. Nothing wrong with the armed having more than one officer of General rank but dilemma is promoting and giving sensitive command to ineffective officers based in tribe and religion. If you do the right things you get right results.

Seems like we're far away from winning this war. It's high time the armed forces especially the Army and Airforce quadruple the number of Officers and men they're currently taking in. There are huge swathes of land unmanned especially in the north east, that's why BH can easily take territories with little or no resistance.

It's time to stop barking up the wrong tree. The armed forces is overstretched but does have a good intake generating the required combat elements and support. The problem is the leadership not the brave Nigerian soldier, sailor and airman that has held ISWAP at bay for ten years. "An army of dogs lead by a lion will defeat an army of lions led by a dog". Okay, I understand you very much and I need you to be stable, which is why I will try break this down in neonatal tenses to avert an impending cerebral shutdown. You see, international politics is way beyond the regular local joint beer and pepper soup discussions that make you assume you are an accomplished political analyst. When you open your social media, you'd be greeted with various colourful reports about how South Africans have almost finished wiping out all Nigerians living in their country,or how the Congolese police has tossed out the Nigerian ambassador on his a.ss in full view of the international community. But that is what we hear, the question we should ask is,what is the true situation?.

In the case of the South Africa reports, I can categorically say that most of the Nigerian deaths are perpetrated by fellow Nigerians, the rest is greatly exaggerated. Usually,it's not as if they even target Nigerians,they can not even tell the difference between Nigerians and Zimbabweans on sight. But when you see the news on Nigerian cyberspace,you will think Southies are killing Nigerians(many of whom are involved in drug peddling and human trafficking) for no just reason.

In the case of Congo, it could be the same. The government cannot start mobilizing for a military invasion of the DRC simply because someone posted a video on YouTube. If you think that is how governance works, then it is good that the only thing you are currently governing is your nairaland account(of course,I am sure you are smarter than that at least). If at all the reports are found to be true, the FG will definitely take action, there is no way they won't take action. But first,such reports must be verified. The ambassador must lodge a distress call, the MoFA must be notified, the ONSA must be notified, then the SGF, who will then notify the President. Statements would be issued, the Congolese ambassador would be summoned to explain the incident. If he fails to give a satisfactory explanation from the POV of his government, our ambassador will be recalled, and theirs expelled. All these don't happen within seconds, it takes days. Governments don't declare war based on hearsay.

We don't know why exactly the Congolese police evicted the people who claim to be the Nigerian embassy. Perhaps it even has nothing to do directly with the Congolese government, it could be that the building was rented and the embassy defaulted in paying their rent, hence, the owner of the property decided to evict them. Let us wait for further clarification, if it was a deliberate act of provocation,then you will have my backing in insulting the President to the fullest.

And now they responded where are the sanctions on the Congolese government or the sanctions the host government has meted out on those who trespassed our sovereign territory. Do you know that's the least that should happen. What you see is just saving face.

You think what you read is the reality. Why do u think we have NIA case intelligence officers on the ground under the cover of other nocturnal diplomatic status and military attaches in our embassies. Before official statements are made the foreign minister is well aware of what's going on same as the president who receive intelligence briefs everyday first thing in the morning (assuming your current president reads them) and plans are made to preempt any negative fallout. That's what responsive governments do and where there're intelligence failures they attempt a robust response by other kinetic means to divert attention.
