Politics / Igbos Don’t Deserve Presidency – Rotimi Amaechi by Ctorch: 9:28pm On Apr 04, 2022
Igbos don’t deserve presidency - Amaechi
Share

Rotimi Amaechi, minister of transportation, has said that the Igbos of the South-east geo-political zone of the country should not demand the presidency in 2023, because they did not deserve it.

He said that the All Progressives Congress (APC) got lesser votes in the region during the 2019 presidential election than in any other zone, describing it as voting against the party.

Speaking with journalists at the weekend, Amaechi said the Igbo have nothing to bring to the negotiation table for 2023 presidency, stressing that the region’s decision to support candidate of the opposition party was an error.

According to him, “I don’t know what they will do now for voting against the APC, for refusing to support the APC. They cannot come to the table to demand the presidency slot. For people like us in the APC, if the Igbo had come and voted Buhari, they would boldly tell Mr. President and the National Chairman of the party that presidency should go the Southeast.

“But since the South-south; South-west and North-west have produced president, what argument would the Southeast come up with now to convince anybody that they deserve the slot for 2023 president?”

The minister said that the region is completely out of national politics and that if the Igbo are not found in national politics, it would be to the detriment of their children.

Prior to the 2019 elections, Boss Mustapha, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), had also said the chances of Igbo clinching the presidential seat would depend on the vote the region turns in for President Muhammadu Buhari.

Since the return of democracy in 1999, Nigeria is yet to have a president of Igbo extraction.

Speaking on the way forward for the ruling party, Amaechi said the APC needs to do a lot of re-engineering and put the party together if they would continue to be in power.

He said there are lots of meetings that they are supposed to be having, like those they used to hold when he was in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“They need to bring caucus together, set up structures at the states and local government levels that will be meeting regularly,” he said.

“They also need to fund those structures. If these things happen, APC will continue to rule the country but I have a problem with the fact that everybody is not completely involved,” he said.

The Arewa Consultative Forum has accused Governor Nyesom Wike of being responsible for the thousands of Northerners who are jobless in the state.

The state chairman of the group, Usman Wada told our correspondent that the slaughter market that the governor demolished had sent thousands of Northerners into joblessness.

He said, “over 90 percent of Northern traders were doing business in the slaughter market before Wike came and demolished it.

“Up till now, our brothers have not been able to find other trade or job.

“Majority of the Northern population in the state came because of cattle and goat slaughtering business and that market that Wike demolished was our place of survival.

“As I speak to you. life has not been easy with our people in the state especially those who were trading in that market.”

The Arewa state chairman also said that the psychological effect of the demolition had affected Islamic interest as some Muslims no longer attend Mosques.

Politics / King Of Port Harcourt Petitions Daura Over Misrepresentation Of Ikwerre Culture by Ctorch: 6:54pm On Feb 17, 2022
King of Port Harcourt petitions Daura Emirate over misrepresentation of Ikwerre Culture

Ten days after Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, the Minister of Transportation was honoured with the traditional title of Dan Amanar Daura (trusted son of Daura), President Muhammadu Buhari’s home town in Katsina State, the Eze Epara Rebisi XII and paramount ruler (King) of Port Harcourt, HRM, Eze Uchechukwu Isaiah Elikwu, has petitioned Emir Faruk Umar Faruk over what he describes is the ‘fraudulent claim of one Prince Victor Woluchem as King of Port Harcourt and a prominent Chief of Ikwerre nation’.

Eze Elikwu in the petition signed by the Secretary of Port Harcourt City Council of Traditional Rulers, HRH Eze Christopher Wonodi, expressed shock that Woluchem would misrepresent himself before the Emir of Daura as the King of Port Harcourt and prominent chief of Ikwerre nation.

He said the actions of Woluchem was in fragrant disregard of a High Court order in Suit No. PHC/1818/2013 restraining him from parading himself as the Eze Epara Rebisi and Paramount Ruler of Port Harcourt.

Re: Fraudulent Claim Of Prince Victor Woluchem As The King Of Port Harcourt And A Prominent Chief Of Ikwerre Nation

On behalf of His Royal Majesty, Eze Barr. Uchechukwu Isaiah Elikwu JP, the Eze Epara Rebisi the XII and paramount ruler (king) of Port Harcourt and the Chiefs and good people of Port Harcourt bring you warm felicitations and greeting to you and members of your great empire.

The attention of the good people of Rebisi Kingdom, in the Port Harcourt City Council has been drawn to the fraudulent representation of Prince Victor Woluchem as the King of Port Harcourt and a prominent chief of Ikwerre nation when they paid a visit to your palace on the occasion of the turbanning of the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi as the Dan Daura of Kastina State on the 5th of February, 2022.

We make bold to bring to your notice and knowledge that Prince Victor Woluchem is not a chief, nor the king of Port Harcourt or a prominent chief of Ikwerre nation.

This fact was confirmed by the High Court of Rivers State in its judgement in Suit No. PHC/1818/2013 between Chief Emeka Anyabelem & Ors Vs Prince Victor Woluchem & Ors delivered on the 5th of November, 2021.

It is instructive to note that the High Court of Rivers State in the said judgement declared and confirmed that His Royal Majesty, Eze Barr. Uchechukwu Isaiah Elikwu JP, as the Eze Epara Rebisi, the XII and the Paramount Ruler (king) of Port Harcourt.

Furthermore, the judgment specifically restrained Prince Victor Woluchem from parading himself as the Eze Epara Rebisi and Paramount Ruler (king) of Port Harcourt.

A copy of the said judgement order is herein attached for your perusal.

Moreso, the Rivers State government, to the knowledge of Prince Victor Woluchem, in compliance with the judgement aforestated, formally presented to His Royal Majesty Eze Barr. Uchechukwu Isaiah Elikwu, the certificate of recognition and staff of office as the Eze Epara Rebisi, the XII and the Paramount Ruler (king) of Port Harcourt.

Based on the above therefore, the representation of Prince Victor Woluchem as the king of Port Harcourt and a prominent chief of Ikwerre nation to you is fraudulent, mischievous, preposterous, criminal and contemptuous of the order of the Honourable Court.

We therefore urge you to discountenance, disregard and reject the said representation.

Kindly accept our kind and esteemed assurances.

Signed:

No fewer than four members of an armed gang have been killed in a midnight shootout at the Aguata police divisional headquarters and the Neni Police Station, Ekwulobia, in the Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the hoodlums arrived at the police station in Aguata around 8pm on Sunday, but were confronted by the policemen on duty.

An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “There was panic in the community as people remained awake throughout because of gunshots. The gunshots started around 8pm and continued into the midnight.”

The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, in a statement on Monday, said police operatives killed four of the hoodlums.

The statement read in part, “The operatives demobilised four of the armed hoodlums and recovered 17 pieces of 7.62mm live ammunition for AK-47rifles, 107 pieces of expended 7.62mm ammunition for AK-47 rifles, seven pieces of expended cartridges for pump-action rifles, 10 pieces of expended 7.62mm long for Lar rifles, one big hammer, three phones and a wallet containing identity cards and some ATM cards.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that one of the four demobilised miscreants, now late, Mr Onyebuchi Okoye, 34, who led the attack on the Aguata divisional headquarters, was arrested earlier on November 4, 2021 with a revolver pistol and six 9mm ammunition by police operatives.

“He was charged to court for conspiracy to commit felony and unlawful possession of firearms under Section 495 of the Criminal Code and on January 21, 2022, was granted bail by the court.

The police spokesman also revealed that Neni Police Station was also attacked, but the gunmen fled the scene due to the superior firepower of the operatives on duty.

He said both stations were intact and no arm or life was lost.

Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State, Echeng Echeng, while reacting to the killing of the hoodlums, charged men of the command to sustain and increase the onslaught against crime in the state.

Politics / DELTA ZONING WAR: Anioma Monarchs Open Up On Okowa’s Successor by Ctorch: 7:01pm On Feb 13, 2022
DELTA ZONING WAR: Anioma monarchs open up on Okowa’s successor

AS it is usual in every political era, politicians across the political divide, particularly in Delta Central and Delta South, have thrown their hats into the ring to contest the 2023 governorship.

The political atmosphere is not different from that of 2007 and 2015, except for 1999 when Chief James Onanefe Ibori was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, without much struggle due to the political awareness and uncertainty at that time.

Following the political stability, the battle for who to succeed Ibori was fierce as political gladiators came out in their numbers to contest the governorship, a situation which led to the formation of political pressure groups like the G3, Urhobo Political Forum and the Equity Group.

But the table turned in favour of Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan from Delta South who emerged governor in 2007 in line with the unwritten zoning arrangement put in place by the PDP.

He faced Chief Great Ogboru who was the candidate of the Democratic Peoples Party, DPP, in the general elections.

The atmosphere was also very tense in 2015 on who to succeed Uduaghan as politicians across the political divide and senatorial districts rose to contest the election with Delta North, arguing that it was their turn since Delta Central and Delta South have governed the state.

The 2015 governorship agitation led to the formation of the Anioma Agenda, which prosecuted the election of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, insisting that it was the turn of Delta North to produce the governor of Delta State.

Again, the votes at the PDP primary went in favour of Okowa in line with the party’s zoning arrangement.

In the main election, Okowa crushed Ogboru who then was the governorship candidate of the Labour Party.

In all of these, the governorship was never argued along ethnic divide but on senatorial basis.

But in the present political dispensation, the Ijaw of Delta South, where the Isoko and the Itsekiri also hail from, are demanding to be the party’s flag bearer as it is their turn to produce the governor.

The people of Delta Central, who would have been out of government for 16 years by May 2023, are firm in their position that it is the turn of the district where the Urhobo, the dominant ethnic group in the state, is located.

They are right in the request for the governorship slot given the fact that the three senatorial districts have had a bite of the governorship position.

16 years

A school of thought argues that Delta Central should be allowed to succeed Okowa, having waited for 16 years and that it would be unfair to deprive them of the position in 2023.

That school of thought maintains that only zoning on a senatorial district basis would bring about peace, harmony, justice, equity and fair play in the politics of Delta irrespective of political parties and affiliation.

The school of thought holds that zoning along the line of ethnicity as canvassed by some persons was not tenable, arguing that the state is made up of Ika, Isoko, Itsekiri, Ukwani, Aniocha/Oshimili, Urhobo and Ijaw ethnic nationalities.

Delta North, which is supposed to be the deciding factor, is still undecided given the remarks of the Chairman of the Delta North Traditional Rulers Forum, Obi (Prof) Chike Edozien.

Edozien, who spoke to Sunday Vanguard after a meeting of the Forum held in his palace, said: “First, we called a meeting to address the issues because ethnic groups are coming out to say they want to contest for governor and they want to support.

“And so we called this meeting to address the issue. Give us time to deliberate and make up our minds.

“When they come, we will call a meeting to address them.

“For now, we are open to aspirants for consultation but we will see how things develop, and then we will know what to do. We supported Governor Ifeanyi Okowa on the grounds of rotation.

“If Isoko come now and insist that it is their turn, what do we tell them? This is open for discussion. With time, we will take a position on zoning when we might have had a consultation with our political class because some of the issues have not been discussed.

“For instance, if we agree on rotation, will it be on senatorial district basis or ethnic basis?

“We will discuss this. If it is a rotation by senatorial districts, the Urhobo people of Delta Central will have a say.

Also Read:

Where will Akpabio run to after 2023?

“If it is on an ethnic basis, then only two who have not had the chance, that is Ijaw and Isoko, have it.

“We have not discussed that yet. And if it is to rotate among senatorial districts, that it started from Central, where will it start again has not to been agreed? So we are open to discussion”.

National Chairman of Delta Central 2023, DC-23, Senator Ighoyota Amori, on his part, said: “Those who want to contest against aspirants of Delta Central have their argument for the governorship seat, likewise us, but we can’t talk of zoning on ethnic lines because the state is made up of various ethnic groups like Urhobo, Ijaw, Itsekiri, Isoko, Ika, Ndokwa, Oshimili, Aniocha and others; hence, the appeal from us to maintain the zoning arrangement on the basis of senatorial districts.

“The claim by some persons that the governorship seat, since it had gone round the three senatorial districts, should be done as ‘osusu’ that can start from any district, is not right.

“My question is, if not an ethnic agenda, why is it that the Itsekiri and Isoko of Delta South are not in their lobby team, like ours that you have leaders of the eight local government areas in the team?

“It is only zoning on senatorial district order that the PDP can continue with its winning streak in the state.

“So, what we are pushing for is how a sustainable system can be established where when it gets to the turn of your senatorial district, no one from other senatorial districts will contest against the benefitting district.

“So, the argument that Urhobo or other ethnic groups contested during the turn of other senatorial districts will no longer be there”.

According to Amori, DC-23 was a lobby group made up of card-carrying members of the PDP in Delta Central to lobby support for the governorship seat for the district in 2023, adding that DC-23 was not different from the G-3 of Delta South that was formed to drive the process of electing Uduaghan, and the Anioma Agenda that was formed in 2014 for the election of Okowa.

Fight

Former Minister of Police Affairs, Alaowei Broderick Bozimo, who is leading the Ijaw agitation, said: “The facts of this proposition are there; whether or not the governorship rotation is based on senatorial or ethnicity, everything is there for us to see.

“The truth of the matter is that it has never been the case that rotation is based on the senatorial basis in the state, everybody knows that politicians go for elections because we practice democracy and, by the rules of INEC, every Nigerian who is qualified under the Constitution or under the law is free to take part in the primaries.

“That is, you cannot stop a man from taking part in the primaries. So, that has been the case in Delta State where politicians from the various senatorial districts in the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, participate in the gubernatorial primaries in every election year.

“So, when somebody from a particular senatorial district wins the primaries, you now say it is on the basis of the senatorial district, there is nothing like that cast in government.

“That is why you find that each time there are gubernatorial primaries, all the senatorial districts take part and they go there and fight stoutly.

“They fight as if their entire lives depend on the result. When one person is declared winner, you tick out that senatorial district.

“This situation played out in the primaries that produced former Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan and Governor Ifeanyi Okowa”.

Save Us From Herdsmen, leaders of Seven Communities in Edo call on Obaseki.

Leaders of seven communities in Edo State have called on the state government and security agencies to save them from those they termed criminal herdsmen terrorising them.

They lamented that their areas have been besieged by the herders who they accused of kidnapping, killing, raping and destroying their farms.

The affected places in Orhionmwon Local Government Area include Ologbo-nugu, Umoghun-nokhua, Orogho, Owuo, Urhehue, Evboesi and Evbonogbon.

They are at the border of Edo and Delta states by River Ethiope, off Benin-Abraka Road. The people lamented that their farmlands have also been destroyed by the herdsmen.

Narrating his experience to Sunday Vanguard, a victim, Gaius Osifo, who hails from Evboesi, said his three farms were destroyed, saying he can no longer access them for fear of being killed by the herders.

Osifo said, “On January after the New Year celebration, I decided to go to my farm. “I went with bamboo to work in my barns.

“When I arrived, I discovered that the herdsmen had destroyed the yams I harvested. “I had to quickly take my motorcycle and ran back to the village so that I wouldn’t be attacked.

“They could have killed me. I went home to tell my people what had happened. “The next day, I went with other farmers to the farms to gather what was left. We reported the matter to our Enogie, Duke. “Ever since the incident happened, we have not been going to the farm. They ate the tubers of yam. “And the ones they did not eat, they cut them into pieces. I now find it difficult to feed and don’t have money since I cannot harvest anything to sell.

“There was a time we drove all the herdsmen in Evboesi away and I believe this set came from a neighbouring community or Delta State. “They ate our plantains and other cash crops.

Police

“Since I was born, I have never seen this kind of thing in our farms. My father cultivated here for many years before I took over after his death. “I don’t know who brought these herdsmen. For now, I only pray to God to help us as nobody can go to the farm to harvest plantain.

“Nobody can harvest cassava to make garri. We have abandoned the remaining crops that we are yet to harvest. “I went to Abudu to report to the police, but they said I should go to Ugo to also report to the police there.  “I showed them the pictures of the destroyed farm and crops. The police promised to call me, but I have not heard from them. “We want government to come to our aid and provide security. The crops they destroyed in my farm are over N3m.”

In a save our soul letter to Governor Godwin Obaseki, the people said they are scared for their lives.

They said herdsmen now threaten their ancestral homes. The letter was signed by 12 elders from the seven communities. They include Nathaniel Ogbemudia, Ologbo-nugu, Charles Aghavbere, Ologbo-nugu, Okoro Nelson Okuonghae, Edward Omomagiowawi, Umoghun-Nokhua, Christopher Aisagbonbu ,Umoghun-Nokhua, Victor Levels Urhehue and Osaro Lease.

Others are Victor Onoko ,Evbonogbon, Friday Egbon, Evbonogbon, Alex Eko, Friday Omoruyi and Chief Johnbull Evbenobose.

Four years

In the letter, they said: “Our farmlands from centuries ago spread from Benin-Abraka Road to Ugo- Oben – Jesse Road, all under Ugo and Iguelaba police divisions. For about four years now, some fierce-looking herdsmen accompanied by AK47- wielding teenagers have invaded our farmlands with hundreds of cattle. “They destroyed our crops and fed their cattle with our produce comprising yams, plantains, cassava and more.

“We took pains to identify the owner of the cattle whom we found to be a Fulani merchant based in Warri. “In our latest contact with him, he disowned the cattle and herders now in our farms, insisting that they are cattle rustlers with stolen cattle from Kogi State. “He said he has since taken away his herders and cattle from our neighbourhood, adding that those now terrorising us are common criminals.

“He said he has since complained at Ugo Police Division that the herdsmen currently terrorising us are common criminals. “He advised us to cry to the government to comb the bush with a joint military team and flush out the bandits.

Bandits

“We are now forced to cry to our governor as the bandits have started killing our people, raping our wives and daughters.

“Late January 2022, they killed a father and his 3 children at Evbonogbon Their bodies are still in the mortuary.

“On February 2, 2022, they abducted three women from Ologbo-nugu, tortured and raped them serially.

“They released them with a warning to their husbands that they will be coming to wipe out the various communities soon.

“Since then, we have sighted them at different points spying on our communities.

“On Thursday, February 3, they abducted seven other women from Evbonogbon and treated them exactly as they treated the three from Ologbo as narrated above.

“Now we are afraid to enter our old farms to harvest or start cultivating new farms. There are several other victims.

“However, on Friday, January 4th, the gallant vigilante team of Ologbo-nugu stormed the occupied farmland and arrested one of the bandits that raped their women.

“The arrested bandit has been handed over to Edo State Police Command and he has confessed to the crime, but refused to name members of his gang or show us where they hide their weapons, which he initially volunteered to do.

“Hence we are crying to our governor to order his Joint Military Task Force to lead our vigilante groups to comb the area and flush out the criminals from our land before they kill more law-abiding citizens.”

Crime / Youths, Hausa Clash In Akwa Ibom Community, Three Dead by Ctorch: 7:15pm On Jan 04, 2022
Three dead as youths, Hausa clash in Akwa

There is tension in Afaha Oku, Ikpa community, in the Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, following the killing of two scrap collectors in the community.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the victims were lynched in retaliation for their alleged involvement in the death of an indigene, identified as Anietie.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the incident occurred on Sunday, January 2, 2022, around 9am.

He said, “What happened was that the youth of the village set ablaze two Hausa scrap collectors who killed an indigene of Afaha Oku village, Anietie, after a misunderstanding.

“Anietie went to collect his clothes from the laundry shop on Sunday morning. While returning to his compound, he encountered two Hausa scrap collectors with some items they removed.

“I was told that he accosted them and asked them what they were doing in his compound. The two Hausa boys got angry and started beating him until he collapsed. When Anietie’s brother who was inside the house saw what happened, he shouted for help.

“People rushed to the scene and caught the two scrap collectors. I learnt that the boy died on the way while being rushed to a hospital. So, the news of his death infuriated the youth, and they descended on those two Hausa people, threw them inside the gutter and burnt them to death.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Odiko MacDon, who confirmed the incident, said the Commissioner of Police, Andrew Amiengheme, had ordered an investigation into it.

The police spokesman regretted that the deaths would have been averted if the community youths and the scrap collectors had not taken the law into their hands.

MacDon noted that preliminary investigation revealed that within the hours when people left for church, the two scrap dealers entered Anietie’s house and stole certain items.

“The Commissioner of Police has ordered that a very thorough investigation be conducted while he still maintained the stance that jungle justice has no place in our laws,” he added.
