Politics / Obiano: We Will Never Succumb To Invaders, Leave Our State by Ctorch: 6:47pm On Sep 29, 2021
We will Never Succumb to Invaders, Leave Our State -Obiano

ADDRESS BY HIS EXCELLENCY THE EXECUTIVE GOVERNOR OF ANAMBRA STATE ON WEDNESDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER, 2021.

It is on a very sad note that I address the State today to condemn in very strong terms, the violence that has been witnessed in Anambra in the past few days.
Since last weekend, some armed persons have unleashed terror with sporadic attacks on innocent citizens in various parts of the State.
From the briefings I have received from Security Commanders, Offices of some political parties, branded campaign vehicles and individuals occupying them have been attacked with killings and burning of vehicles observed.

Other innocent road users have become victims of this menace with many losing their lives and others, their properties.
Between Sunday 26th and yesterday 28th September, 2021 attacks on citizens at Oko, Agulu, Obosi, Nkpor, Nnobi, Nnewi and other places have left about ten (10) people dead including an illustrious son of this State, Dr Chike Akunyili, husband of late Prof Dora Akunyili who was reportedly gunned down yesterday around Nkpor.

These are our own people dying every day and for what reason?
Ndi Anambra, these attacks and accompanying deaths cannot be justified and must stop now.

I have therefore conducted an extensive security meeting and have directed all Security Agencies to step up and confront this monster ravaging our land. I charge everyone involved in the security architecture of Anambra State to take very seriously, this threat to our livelihood and boldly rise to confront same. Everything that needs to be done will be done and no stone will be left unturned in this effort. My directive to this effect is clear and i urge every security personnel on duty in Anambra State to do his utmost best to secure our people.

To all citizens of Anambra State and every person living and doing business in our State, I urge you now to join forces with us to confront this common enemy. We cannot condone this savagery for any reason whatsoever.
I therefore call on all our youths in the State to rise up and protect our communities.
Traditional Rulers, Presidents General, Clergy men, Vigilante Groups and all leadership structures must now take responsibility and in conjunction with the Police, Military and other Law Enforcement Agencies, work to restore order immediately.

To reinforce our commitment and seriousness on this issue, I on behalf of the State Government, wish to announce a twenty million Naira (N20,000,000.00) reward for any useful information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators of these heinous attacks on our State. The people behind this must be unmasked and brought to book.
I urge Citizens to report to us, anybody bearing firearm who is not a Security or Vigilante personnel, so we can deal with this monster, once and for all. Call 07039194332 or approach any Security deployment if you have any information. As the Americans say, IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING.

At this point, I wish to most heartily condole with the families of all those who have lost their loved ones in the course of these senseless attacks. I promise you that we will leave no stone unturned in getting justice for them. May their souls rest in peace.

Finally, I urge all citizens of the State to unite in this fight against all forms of terror, intimidation and tyranny. We will not succumb to invaders as I am convinced that no Anambra son will indulge in this kind of heartlessness. I warn all those promoting and participating in these violent attacks to leave our State or pay a high price as we will definitely catch up with them.

To all law abiding citizens and persons living in our State, I urge you to go about your lawful businesses but we must now ALL go to work and take back our State. This is Anambra, the Light of the Nation, where darkness has no place. The events of the last one week will not be allowed to fester and by God’s grace, we shall overcome.
Thank you and God bless.

Gov Willie Obiano, FCA.

Politics / Reno Omokri: President Buhari To Declare State Of Emergency In South East by Ctorch: 5:05pm On Sep 29, 2021
Buhari planning to declare 'State-of-Emergency' in South-East - Reno Omokri

Former Presidential aide, Reno Omokri has stated that President Muhammadu Buhari is planning to declare a state-of-emergency in the South-Eastern part of the country.

This development, if true, is most likely due to the recent high-profile murders occurring in the region with the latest being the assassination of Mr. Chike Akunyili, husband to late NAFDAC DG, Dora Akunyili.

Omokri, in a tweet on Wednesday, disclosed; “News from sources in Aso Rock is that General Buhari is thinking of the declaring a State of Emergency in the Southeast.”

“Let the man whose trousers never reach the floor be warned: Emergency in the SE and Business as Usual in the NE/NW will ignite crisis in Nigeria!”.

Similarly, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, an Apex Igbo organization while reacting to Akunyili’s murder revealed that the Federal government may indeed declare a state-of-emergency in the region.

The South-east has been plagued with several pockets of insecurity and violence following the detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu. The group had ordered a ‘sit-at-home’ every monday until Kanu is released.

The militia arm of the proscribed group, the Eastern Security Network has been attacking innocent individuals who violate the order. Several shops and vehicles have been burnt, people beaten and killed allegedly by members of the group for disobeying the directive.

Eyewitness account of how Ipob killed Dora Akunyili husband.

donttouchme
The man was assasinated by the same group that killed an hausa man at eke nkpor, a man driving a bike with civil defence inscription at inland door, and shot at two security men at sisters fellowship yesterday evening. They drove with 1 venza, 1 lexus 350, 1 sienna and another ox-blood jeep. They drove through nkpor junctionand afor nkpor and people were hailing them. They were ipob men. I stay close to eke nkpor. Infact the two security shot are my guys. They are lying critically at crown hospital. This people(ipob) has turned to somethingelse. Any small resistance they will shoot. They shot dora husband and drag him out of the prado jeep. They thought he was a political figure. His death is more of trigger happy. They were shouting no election.

Another one

Ichiebillion:
honestly, anybody claiming that this killing wasn't done by Ipob is a demon.
I witnessed the Oba shooting and on my way back to osha, saw the dead Civil defense guy near inland doors. For those supporting this madness, one day go be your turn. A borno scenario is seriously loading while the gullible amongst us are still cheering these monsters.
Though, I have always known that a movement mostly speerheaded by illerates would definitely have disastrous consequences.

Pray for the East.

Politics / Enugu State Govt Hands Over Two Mosque To Enugu Indigeneous Muslims by Ctorch: 12:07pm On Aug 28, 2021
Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, in keeping with his earlier directives, on Friday, formally handed over to the Muslim community in Nsukka, two mosques rebuilt by his administration which were hitherto affected following a protest that erupted in the area, late last year.

It would be recalled that Gov. Ugwuanyi, on the heels of the unfortunate crisis, immediately dispatched the Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Hon. Cosmas Ugwueze and the security agencies to scene to restore peace and normalcy, which resulted to no loss of life and minimal damage to property.

Gov. Ugwuanyi further directed the immediate rebuilding of the two affected mosques and consequently detailed the council chairman to liaise with the leadership of the Muslim community in Nsukka, to redesign and construct new mosques for them.
Handing over the rebuilt mosques to the Nsukka Muslim community, led by the Chief Iman, Nsukka Central Mosque, Alhaji Yakubu Omeh, on Friday, Gov. Ugwuanyi, represented by the Chairman of Nsukka LGA, Hon. Ugwueze, thanked God that the incident did not lead to any loss of life.
The governor thanked the Christian and Muslim communities for sustaining the existing peace in Enugu State, reassuring them of his commitment to continue to protect everybody resident in the state.

In a message of appreciation presented Prof. Momoh Mumuni, the Muslims expressed their profound gratitude to Gov. Ugwuanyi for rebuilding and inauguration of the mosques, stressing that the governor has “shown high level of compassion, tolerance, resilience, dedication, commitment, bridge-building spirit; and has exhibited sincere passion for which we have known you since your days; and harbor no grudges against anybody living in your domain”.
They said that the governor is “more of a father, brother, mentor and bridge-builder to us in Enugu State”, adding that “you (Ugwuanyi) have demonstrated unparalleled record for your kind gesture, by quickly putting together and deploying all your arsenal, energy, strategies and dragnets to ensure the avoidable crises that led to the miscarriage of annoyance to our worship place (mosque) did not reach the point of no-return”.

“We will continually pray for God’s wisdom, direction and strength upon you as you pilot the affairs of this great state. Thank you for extending your unreserved help to all kinds of people in the state irrespective of their state of origin, religion, belief and race.
“Despite the political jingoism and all forms of fragile environment, you remain much focused on the service of humanity all to the glory of God. What a perfect gentleman! What a trusted ally!! We sincerely appreciate you and God bless you sir”.

The Muslim community equally thanked the Chairman of Nsukka LGA, Hon. Ugwueze for the role he played during the incident, pointing out that he demonstrated wisdom and maturity in calming all frayed nerves.
In his remarks, the Chief Imam, Nsukka Central Mosque, Alhaji Omeh, also thanked God that nobody died during the protest and lauded Gov. Ugwuanyi for his prompt and rare intervention.

Speaking on behalf of the Bishops of Catholic and Anglican Dioceses in Nsukka, as well as the Chairman of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Nsukka Chapter, Rev. Fr. Dr. Emeka Ngwoke commended the governor’s gesture towards promoting peace and harmonious co-existence of Nigerians in Enugu State, urging residents of the state to continue to live in peace and harmony for other states to emulate.

In his goodwill message, a Northern-based wealthy farmer, an indigene of Mbu in Isi-Uzo LGA, who recently relocated his farming business to Enugu State, Alhaji Sani Friday Nnaji, expressed delight at Gov. Ugwuanyi’s timely intervention, restating that it was because of the peace entrenched by the governor that he relocated a lot of his investments to Enugu State.

Politics / APC Denies Zoning President To South by Ctorch: 9:24am On Aug 19, 2021

“Where was it done and at what occasion?”

The caretaker chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, has refuted media reports that the party has zoned the presidency to the southern part of the country ahead of the 2023 poll.
Buni stated yesterday that there was no iota of truth in the speculation making the rounds in a section of the media.
The report in an online medium indicated that the Buni-led caretaker committee had zoned the President to the South, Vice President to the North, Senate President (South) and Deputy Senate President (North).
Others include House of Representatives Speaker (North) and Deputy Speaker (South).
Said he: “This is absolutely false! Where was it done and at what occasion? This is a mere fabrication of the writer’s imagination. It is completely misleading.”

Politics / We Have Nothing Or Nobody Known As Autopilot,Commends Their Lawyer Ejiofor -IPOB by Ctorch: 8:18am On Aug 19, 2021
The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, yesterday, said it is not capable of rewarding its lawyers and Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers, including Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, for all they are doing for them.
The pro-Biafra group, while reacting to alleged attacks against Mr. Ejiofor said he remains IPOB’s lead council and its leaders lead legal representative and they repose strong confidence in his ability and capacity.

IPOB described as ridiculous the attack by some uninformed family members of the group who are criticizing Mr. Ejiofor’s support for the suspension of the sit-at-home, saying that the alleged attempts by the Nigeria security agencies to eliminate the lawyer at all costs following their alleged inability to get him compromised is enough reason to appreciate what he is doing for the pro-Biafra group.

IPOB statement read in part: “The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, ably led by our great leader Nnamdi Kanu, has told those criticising and insulting the lead counsel of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, to stop and see reason with us for suspending the Monday weekly sit-at-home.
“Some uninformed fellows and mischief makers have been insulting, criticizing and attacking Ifeanyi Ejiofor for giving his nod to the suspension of the Monday weekly sit-at-home. IPOB is also disappointed that despite our earlier explanations on the rationale behind our decision to suspend the Monday sit-At-home order, some fellows are still disparaging our lead counsel and our leadership over the decisions.
“We therefore, wish to advise all those playing the devil’s advocate to desist in their own interest and stop giving our enemies room to mock us. IPOB is a well structured and organised movement with clear cut hierarchical structure as well.

“Henceforth, IPOB will no longer take lightly any act of insubordination from anybody or from any quarter irrespective of ones status on our leader’s lawyers. They have not taken any action inimical to the struggle to warrant the embarrassing and undeserved insults from some uninformed folks.
“All the decisions so far taken were in the best interest of the struggle and in accordance with direct directive from our Leader who is very impressed with the actions and solidarity so far given and implemented by the leadership since his incarceration.

“Ifeanyi Ejiofor, remains IPOB’s lead counsel and our leader’s lead legal representative and our leader reposes strong confidence in his ability and capacity. As a trusted counsel, he has not betrayed or misrepresented his clients IPOB and Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
“There is no reason therefore, for anyone especially IPOB family members to reciprocate Ejiofor’s sacrifices with insults. The facts in the public domain evidences multiple attempts by the Nigeria security agencies to eliminate Ejiofor at all costs because they have failed to get him compromised.

“Instead of appreciating him for defending our leader at the risk of his own life, some mischief makers are trying to accuse him of sabotage. This is not only ridiculous but stupidity taken too far.
“We also wish to clarify that in IPOB, we have nothing or nobody known as autopilot. Anybody going by such title is not IPOB, and is flouting our rules. Anybody claiming to be such should immediately disengage before he is embarrassed.”

Politics / Militant Leader Kills 6 Tompolo Men In Delta State by Ctorch: 6:44am On Jul 18, 2021
A suspected militant leader, weekend, laid ambush on the Benin River for members of Egbema Kingdom Peace Keepers collaborating with ex-militant leader, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, to keep peace in Warri North Local Government Area, Delta State, massacring six of them.

The atrocity forced the Joint Task Force, which suspended the siege to Egbema kingdom, following the attack and killing of some soldiers at a Military Base in Obodo, Warri South local government area, by militant leader and his boys, early July, to lock down the kingdom afresh in the last two days.

“On Thursday, the army deployed about 12 gun boats looking for the militant leader, but as at today (yesterday) when I am speaking to you (Saturday Vanguard), nothing has come out of the matter. We just heard they are fighting. The river has been closed since yesterday (Thursday) and today (Friday),” a villager revealed.

Chairman of Warri North Local Government Area, Hon Smart Asekutu, who also spoke to Saturday Vanguard, confirmed: “Six members of the Egbema Kingdom Peace Keepers were killed by the notorious militant leader, kidnapper and pirate, N.K, but we have recovered the remains of the three and taken them to the mortuary at Warri.”

“It is not nine persons that were killed, I think they are about six, the boy has been causing security challenges for us in the local government and the present lock down by the army has the support of the local government council because security agents have to track him down before he commits more havoc,” he said.

Asekutu urged the people of Warri North to cooperate with the soldiers, saying: “The current lock-down is to track down those kidnapping people and causing trouble so that there will be peace in the area.”

He said that those who had personal relationship with the militant leader had reached out to him, but he refused to stop his atrocities, hence the soldiers had to do what they were doing now to arrest him.

“He can be in the midst of people and when soldiers open fire, innocent people will be affected, that is why we want our people to cooperate with the security agents by giving them all relevant information,” he said.

The fleeing militant leader, who defied the pleas of Tompolo and Egbema leaders to stop his criminal activities went into hiding after killing the peace keepers .

Previous visits to his camp to arrest him failed, as he got wind and fled with his boys. However, Tompolo deployed some of the peace keepers, during the week, with soldiers to visit his camp once again and clip his wings.

“He reportedly got wind of the plan and laid siege for them on the waterways where he killed nine of the peace keepers, these are people with families, so there is still much wailing in Egbema since Thursday.

A source said militant leader was dislodged by the military in Lagos after which he relocated to Ondo state and later re positioned to Egbema kingdom, where he built a militant camp in the last few months and had committed many atrocities.

“In Egbema, he turned a terror, kidnapping hostages and collecting various ransoms from people and all efforts to rein him proved abortive.

“Leaders of Egbema ordered him to leave the kingdom but he refused, prompting them to report his escapades to Tompolo, who called a peace meeting, but he declined to show up.

“Earlier in June, the militant leader had also attacked Egbema peace keepers, killed one of them and fled with one of their speedboats

“It was three days after the onslaught on Egbema peace keepers that some soldiers were attacked and killed, which led to lock-down in Egbema. The army people he killed were not even in Warri North, they were in Warri South,” the informant added.

Politics / Kanu: We've Entertained Enough Of Your Nuisance - Anambra Elders Warns Igbos by Ctorch: 7:21am On Jul 11, 2021
Be Warned, We've entertained Enough of Your Nuisance-Anambra Elders warn Igbos

The recent reorganisation of Onitsha-Ado Vigilante Service in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State, has pitched Anambra Elders against leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

A tweet from Kanu’s verified Tweeter handle, on March 21, 2021, had alleged that the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, revived the vigilance group on the prompting of the Presidency and the Miyetti Allah, to counter the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in the commercial city and its environs.

Reacting to the development, a group under the auspices of Anambra Elders for Equity and Justice has cautioned the IPOB leader. Stating their position in a letter written, on behalf of their behalf, by Ejiofor Okafor, the group condemned the threat from Kanu, warning that Anambra people would hold him responsible should anything untoward happen to the monarch.
But the IPOB leader, yesterday, denied the insinuations making rounds that he insulted the Obi of Onitsha, insisting that he has great respect for the monarch and will continue to hold him in high esteem.

According to the elders, Kanu had warned Igwe Achebe not to “allow his office to be used by Fulani supporter of APC terrorists in Aso Rock to foment trouble for ESN around Onitsha and environs; otherwise it will end in tears for him and his local Miyetti Allah-funded vigilante named Onitsha Ado.” They argued that by so doing, he issued a direct threat to “Agbogidi and also the Onitsha Vigilante Service.”

The elders noted that the vigilance group in Onitsha was formed 19 years ago, long before Kanu contemplated his IPOB and ESN, adding that they were worried why he singled out the revered monarch for attack when every community in Igboland operated a vigilance group or security outfit. They also accused Kanu of trying to stifle alternative voices in the region.

The elders then stated in the letter: “We must warn you to desist from further denigrating Agbogidi for we are at a loss understanding why you’re intent on destroying his laudable attempts at safeguarding his domain and we’ll have you know that it is not a worthy Igbo trait to be seen insulting your elders, let alone someone as high and revered as the Obi of Onitsha who is old enough to be your grandfather.

“We know you currently brim with supreme arrogance and an incredible Messiah complex but like that child who pointedly and rightly raised the issue of the king’s unclothedness whilst others applauded his non-existent resplendent robes, you need to be told that if you have any modicum of honesty, you should by now use same Twitter platform to tender an unreserved apology to the Obi of Onitsha and his people for that baseless and unwarranted attack.”
However, a statement by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, insisted that Kanu’s comment merely advised the monarch and the security outfit against being used by the Fulani and the powers-that-be to fight the ESN.
“IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, never insulted the Obi of Onitsha as being mischievously misconstrued by these dubious characters and traitors in our land,” he stated. “They only want to twist facts for a piece of bread and crumbs from the Caliphate. The fact remains that our Leader, Kanu, has enormous respect for the Obi of Onitsha and holds him in high esteem.
“Our Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, supports every genuine security outfit set up to protect our land and forest and to secure our mothers, wives and sisters from the incessant rapes and killings by Fulani terrorists. But any security outfit set up to attack ESN cannot be allowed to exist.”

Politics / If We Insist On Rotational Presidency Then It Must Be Middle Belt, SE -kogi Gov by Ctorch: 5:39pm On Jul 10, 2021
Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi has described the clamour for rotational presidency as unconstitutional, saying that Nigerians should be allowed to make their choices for the best candidate to emerge for the top post.
Bello spoke at the maiden edition of the Governor Yaya Bello seminar for political and crime correspondents in Abuja on Friday.
He argued that the criteria on who should be Nigeria’s next president should be centered on someone who would unify the country and solve the problems plaguing the nation.
Bello pointed out, however, that if rotational presidency was to be considered, it should be done with equity, fairness and justice, noting that the Middle-Belt and the Southeast had not held the position since 1999.
The governor argued further that if zoning was to resolve the problems of Nigeria, the previous presidents would have completely solved the problems in the zones they had represented.
“When we are talking about democracy today, democracy is all about free choices. Give the majority the free will to choose whoever they want. Let political parties not limit Nigerians to who they want to elect into offices.
“When you look at it, I think it is unconstitutional. It is not in our APC party Constitution and it is not there in the 1999 Constitution.

“Today, if you are sick and need to be operated upon, you will want the best doctor to operate on you. It’s not where the doctor comes from or the religion he practices that matters.
“Put that aside, if we should continue on the sentiments of this rotation of the presidency, from that region to this region, then let us do it perfectly in the interest

“If that is the angle you want to come from, let us put it on the table and look at it and we should not just take it from 1999, let us go back to 1960 from independence when Nigerians started ruling themselves.
“You will discover that other geo-political zones as they exist today, have at one time or the other occupied the position of the presidency — either as president or vice-president.
“If we should go by that, then the North Central has been largely short-changed. Then let us focus on North Central.
“But if you take it from 1999, then you are talking of the North Central and the Southeast. I continue to emphasise that the best candidate should be allowed to emerge.
“The candidate should be someone, who will unify this country, solve the problems we are facing today, build on the legacies that Mr President will leave behind.”

The governor also urged Nigerian youths to get involved and take charge just like their counterparts across the globe, “who are driving the modern world’.’
Secretary to the Kogi State Government, Dr. Folashade Arike Ayoade, said the seminar was meant to be a moment of sober reflection on issues bedeviling the nation.
She pointed out that the seminar would give participants insights into how Kogi was tackling challenges affecting the state.

Politics / Sunday Igboho's Acts, Speeches Terrorised Citizens In SW- Presidency by Ctorch: 9:28am On Jul 07, 2021
Days after Nnamdi Kanu's arrest and the raid on Sunday Igboho's Ibadan residence, the presidency has made some clarifications
– In a statement on Tuesday, July 6, the presidency noted that Igboho's acts of terror have created tension and unrest even for his kinsmen
– The Buhari-led government added that it will never tolerate acts that will undermine the unity of Nigeria and endanger the lives of citizens

The presidency has hailed Nigeria's security agencies for the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and the recent raid on Sunday Igboho's residence in Ibadan .
In a statement released by a presidential media aide, Garba Shehu, the presidency also praised international agencies whose cooperation with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) led to the arrest of Kanu.

It added that IPOB, led by the southeast secessionist, became a group notorious for its murderous actions and inflammatory speeches capable of fanning the embers of division in Nigeria, Nigerian Tribune reports.

On why the house of the Yoruba agitator was raided by officers of the Department of State Service (DSS), the presidency added that Igboho's utterances became injurious, "very hateful and vile laden speeches".
The statement added that Igboho is a militant ethnic secessionist known to be conducting acts of terror and "disturbing the peace under the guise of protecting fellow kinsmen," Punch added.

Politics / 1999 Constitution, toxic Document Skewed To Favor Section Of NIG-Anglican Church by Ctorch: 5:08pm On Jul 04, 2021
STATE OF THE NATION: 1999 constitution, toxic document skewed to favour section of Nigeria ― Anglican Church

The Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion has described the 1999 constitution as a “toxic and fatally flawed document” designed to place a particular section of the country above other ethnic groups.
Bishop of the Diocese of Akure, Rt. Revd. Simeon Oluwole Borokoni said this at the third session of the 13th synod held Saint Andrews Anglican Church, Alade ldanre, in Ondo state.
The church equally expressed shock over the increase in the nation’s debt to N32.9tn as published by the Debt Management Office (DMO) and inflation “that is ravaging the country at the moment, which has increased the cost of living with the attendant rise in the poverty index.

Borokini said that ” the 1999 constitution which should be revisited in order to satisfy the yearnings of every part of the country was “a toxic and fatally flawed document”
He noted that the current level of acrimony and lack of mutual trust across the country can only be solved if contentious aspects of the constitution were looked into.

“The 1999 constitution needs to be revisited. It was done to favour certain ethnic parts of the country while the constitution does not favour some parts.
“So, I will suggest that the constitution should be revisited so that it will bring mutual and unity among the people so that it will not be a constitution that favours certain ethnic groups. The constitution is not practicable.

“All the national conferences held to date up to the 2014 and the latest, which is the El-Rufai committee recommendations which are aimed at addressing the fault tines in the present constitution should serve as useful resource materials which could be tapped into to produce a Nigerian Constitution of our dream that will be all-inclusive, fair, credible, responsive, acceptable and functional to make our democracy work.
“With the current Ievel of acrimony, bitterness and lack of mutual trust in the country the most reasonable option is to shift the monologue of those favoured by the existing constitution to a convocation of dialogue of our ethnic nationalities to resolve contentious areas in this important document.”
On the nation’s debts, he said that “Synod notes with rude shock the sporadic rise in Nigeria’s Public Debt to N32.9tn in recent times as published by the Debt Management Office (DMO). The government is therefore urged as a matter of top priority to reduce the frequency of borrowing, which might lead the country into bankruptcy.
“Synod urges Government at all levels to take drastic measures at taming this ugly trend. The government is urged to tackle seriously the issue of poor electricity supply, which if addressed, will help to generate more employment particularly for our teeming unemployed youth, and thereby improve the economy of the Nation.
“Nigerians particularly the leaders to embrace the political will that adopts a problem-solving mindset in dealing with the economic issues that confront us a Nation.
“Synod observes with great concern the dwindling state of the economy of the nation, especially the runaway inflation that is ravaging the country at the moment, which has increased the cost of living with the attendant rise in the poverty index.
“According to the National Bureau of Statistics in a recent report, 33.3 % of the labour force in Nigeria or 23,189,389 persons either do nothing or work for less than twenty hours a week.

Speaking insecurity ravaging most parts of the country, the Bishop emphasized the issue of banditry and kidnappings had continued to thrive due to the lack of stiff penalties meted out perpetrators.
He advocated for the deployment of modern technologies such as drones and CCTV cameras to combat the menace.
“Synod commends the efforts of our security agencies in their fight against the issue of insecurity confronting the Nation at this time but urges them to improve on their efforts at tackling this monster confronting our Nation.
“Synod also commends the efforts of the various Governors, especially in the South West in the establishment of Amotekun Corps in a bid to reducing the spate of insecurity in their respective domains.
On restructuring, the synod said that “the restructuring of our polity has dominated our public discourse in recent times with so many perspectives on its interpretation.
“Synod urges the Federal Government to listen to the yearnings of the people by embracing true Federalism which is believed would stem the agitations for secession by those who feel marginalised in the country.
On corruption, the Synod notes with concern the persistent issue of corruption ravaging our nation, which has affected all strata of our national life with the attendant consequences.
“Synod, therefore, urges Government at all levels to take the fight against corruption seriously if this country is going to survive.
Commending Governor Rotimi Akeredolu for his speaking truth to power on national issues, the Bishop lauded him for the manner in which he had been able to tackle the issue of insecurity with the Amotekun Corps.
“Much as the government is making all efforts to combat these scourge, I will suggest among other steps that an all-inclusive security summit at community and at all tiers of government level, involving all stakeholders such as traditional rulers, religious leaders, road transport workers. Okada riders, politicians, youths, market women etc be regularly convened to discuss ways to check the criminalities in our society.
“Also, because such evil acts persist due to lack of appropriate and severe consequences, stiff penalties that are backed by law should be meted out to offenders who perpetrate such dastardly acts.
He added that “Job creation and provision of enabling environment by the government for businesses to thrive should not be ignored because of the correlation between idleness and predisposition to crime and criminality especially amongst our youths.”

Politics / Anambra Guber Election: Again Court Okays Jude Okeke’s Governorship Primaries by Ctorch: 1:59pm On Jul 01, 2021
Jubilation has hit the venue of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, primary in Awka as the Court has okayed the Governorship primaries of Jude Okeke while also dashing the hopes of Victor Oye.
in a ruling by the Judge at the Delta Court where Oye secured exparte injunction against Jude Okeke, the court ruled against Oye as it vacated the order stopping APGA’s primary.
The court’s decision today has cleared all legal hurdles towards emergence of an authentic governorship candidate for APGA.
Over 11 members of Anambra House of Assembly, several appointees of Governor Obiano, party chieftains, thousands of APGA supporters from the 21 LGA, etc stormed the venue of Jude Okeke led APGA Primaries in solidarity with popular Hon. Chuma Umeoji (Member House of Reps) whom the party said is likely to defeat his closest challenger, Iron Lady Elizabeth, to win today’s exercise .
Delta State High Court sitting in Orerokpe on Thursday 1st July, 2021 transferred the Suit No. HOR/25/2021: Between Ogbueshi Anthony O. Eboka & APGA VS. Chief Jude Okey & 2 Others to the Chief Judge for re-assignment to another Judge.
The effort of the Oye faction to move the motion to extend the life of the interim order earlier obtained suffered a setback in view of the Motion challenging the territorial and subject matter jurisdiction of the Court to hear the matter.

The Judge, in transferring the matter to the Chief Judge for personal reasons, ruled that by virtue of Order 39(7)(3) of the Delta State High Court Rules_, the earlier Exparte Order he granted had lapsed.

Politics / CJN Orders Justice Olasunbo To Retake Oath After Mentioning Allah by Ctorch: 2:19pm On Jun 28, 2021
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Muhammad, on Monday, asked Olasunbo Goodluck, one of the 18 newly sworn-in justices of the Court of Appeal to retake her oath of office because she replaced “God” with “Allah” in the officially recognised concluding remark.

Ms Goodluck who hails from Lagos, South-west Nigeria, broke the “So help me God” rule.

As the judge walked away from the microphone, the CJN ordered Ms Goodluck to return to the podium and say, “So help me God.”

PREMIUM TIMES reported that the inauguration was earlier scheduled to take place in April but had to be postponed due to the nationwide strike of the members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN).

The strike embarked upon by judiciary workers to press for the financial autonomy of the judiciary started on April 6 and went on to ground Nigerian courts and relevant institutions for over two months.

President Muhammadu Buhari approved the appointment of the judges following their recommendation by the National Judicial Council (NJC).

PREMIUM TIMES reported how the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Friday, struck out a suit demanding three slots for the South-east region in the process of appointing the 18 judges.

Politics / INEC Insists APGA Won’t Participate In Anambra Governorship Election by Ctorch: 1:41pm On Jun 24, 2021
• Soludo wins the factional ticket, ‘suspended’
• Journalists barred at the venue of accreditation, voting

According to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which dropped the hint, yesterday, in Abuja, APGA’s disqualification followed the party’s failure to comply with Section 85 of the Electoral Act.

The commission disclosed that APGA did not notify it when it purportedly held its ad hoc congress to elect delegates for the party’s governorship primary.

INEC’s National Commissioner in charge of Publicity and Voter Education, Mr. Festus Okoye, in a statement, insisted that parties must act within the confines of the law in the conduct of their congresses and primaries if they are to avoid issues and challenges that may complicate the conduct of elections.

INEC’s clarification came on the heels of the declaration of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, as the winner of the factional primary organised by the Chief Victor Oye-led faction of the party.

As of the time of filing the report, exit polls indicated the former CBN governor and frontline aspirant was cruising home to victory, even as reports indicated that a rival faction of the party announced the suspension of the economist-turned politician.

The Chief Jude Okeke-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the party said Soludo was suspended from APGA for anti-party activities, saying that the NWC arrived at the decision after its meeting on Tuesday, June 22, 2021.

The acting National Publicity Secretary of the faction, Ikechukwu Chukwunyere, who disclosed this to journalists in Abuja, said the party leadership applauded the peaceful and successful “Special Delegate Ward Congresses, where three-member Ward Delegates were elected for the July 1, governorship primaries of the party.”

Journalists were barred at the venue of the accreditation and voting. The state secretary of the party, Tony Ifeanya, however denied knowledge of any order by the leadership of the party to bar reporters from witnessing the event, which was beamed live by dedicated television stations and the SoludoTV Facebook app

Ifeanya said journalists in the state were not accredited because they did not apply to the party for permission to cover the primary election.

“Maybe you people can wait around. When the process is over, the leadership of the party would speak to you about the outcome of the exercise,” he said.

Politics / Endless Borrowing: Experts Worry, Okonjo-Iweala, Ahmed Differ On Nigeria’s Debts by Ctorch: 7:33am On Jun 24, 2021
The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, and the Director General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Wednesday, differed on the nation’s debt-to-Gross Domestic Product ratio.

Experts who spoke to our correspondents also expressed worry over the nation’s rising debt profile.

While Ahmed put the debt-to-GDP ratio at 29 per cent, Okojo-Iweala said it had risen to 35 per cent.

Both the minister and the WTO boss spoke at the African Development Bank High Level Knowledge Event with the theme: ‘From Debt Resolution to Growth: The Road Ahead for Africa’ which held virtually on Wednesday.

Ahmed also disclosed that Nigeria planned to borrow more money to fund its infrastructure capacity.

This is in spite of voices calling on the government to halt borrowing and concentrate on other means of raising funds for the infrastructure needs of the country.

According to the Debt Management Office, Nigeria’s total public debt portfolio rose from N12.12tn in June 2015 to N33.11tn as of March 31.

Ahmed said the government was enforcing fiscal discipline to expand its fiscal space so that it could continue to service its debts and borrow more to build the nation’s infrastructure capacity.

She said, “As of Q1 2021, we have about a 29 per cent debt-to-Gross Domestic Product ratio. In terms of level of debt, we are still very healthy, and sustainable.

“We are struggling with revenues, which is what we need to pay our debts. We have put in place a number of measures to enhance domestic revenue.

“We are cutting costs, we are improving the ease of doing business, trying to leverage private sector resource capacity to invest in infrastructure to reduce government spending.

“We are working on increased transparency in public financial management; we are enforcing fiscal discipline to expand our fiscal space so that we can continue to service our debt and borrow more to build our infrastructure capacity.”

Ahmed also said that the total debt profile did not include that of some states, and that the federal government was making moves to correct that.

“In Nigeria, we’ve been making a lot of effort on a quarterly basis to disclose all the debts that we have and to also indicate what the debt service is.

Currently, we are working on including other state-owned debts that have not been included in public debt for the purpose of transparency. It is important and will help us going forward.”

However, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who also attended the AfDB’s event, differed with Ahmed on the nation’s debt-to-GDP ratio.

The WTO boss who had been Nigeria’s Minister of Finance in the past said the nation’s debt to GDP ratio had risen from 29 per cent to 35 per cent.

She said, “Middle-income African countries have also seen their debt burdens increase sharply. Amid falling prices and demand for oil worldwide, Nigeria’s debt to GDP ratio rose from 29 to 35 per cent; Algeria from 46 to 53 per cent, and Egypt from 84 to 90 per cent, Angola from 107 to 127 per cent.

“Debt to GDP ratios also increased for non-oil exporters including South Africa from 62 to 77 per cent. Morocco from 65 to 76 per cent.”

Okonjo-Iweala also said that scarce foreign exchange in certain African countries was creating scenarios where the governments were using scarce forex to fund the fund debt repayment rather than on capital investment.

“Even where debt to GDP or where debt to export ratios were not very high, tighter access to dollar financing because of the COVID-19 crisis means we are already seeing places where scarce foreign exchange is going to fund debt repayment instead of capital investment,” she added.

A professor of economics at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Sheriffdeen Tella, described as a cause for worry the amount being spent by the government on debt servicing.

He said, “What is important is not even the debt-to-GDP ratio but the ability to pay, and we are presently in serious problem with payments.

“If they want to borrow money from internal sources, that could be understood. But if they are going international again, I think it is not proper because presently the level of international borrowing is what is giving them problem now.

“We are selling oil and making money but we are using that money to service the debts that we owe, and that is unfortunate.

“So, one cannot but be worry. So, government should think about creating wealth rather than continue borrowing. If they need money badly, they should borrow domestically.”

Prof. Akpan Ekpo told one of our correspondents that there was an urgent need for the government to be more transparent concerning the borrowing.

He said, “There is nothing bad in borrowing but you need to borrow to fund infrastructural projects that will pay their way.

Looking at debt-to-GDP ratio can be quite misleading because we debased our GDP making the denominator very large compared to the numerator. Instead, we should use debt servicing to GDP ratio and debt to revenue ratio, which at the current rates are disturbing.”

Ekpo added, “FG needs to do more feasibility studies on these infrastructural projects before borrowing to fund them.

“Infrastructural projects like power and others have positive multiplier effects in the long run. For the debt acquisition, they also need to be more transparent on it too.”

President of the AfDB, Akinwumi Adesina, said that cumulative total debt in Africa was higher than cumulative government revenue.

According to him, in 2019, Africa’s total outstanding debt was $841.9bn, while total government annual revenue was $501bn.

Adesina said, “Africa’s GDP declined by 2.1 per cent in 2021. Growth is projected to recover to 3.4 per cent by 2021 and 2022. Africa’s cumulative GDP declined by $145bn to $190bn.

“Millions fell into extreme poverty on the continent. Thirty-nine million Africans could fall into poverty by the end of 2021.

Adesina said debt-to-GDP ratios on the continent was expected to rise to 10 to 15 percentage points, rising from 60 per cent in 2020 to 75 per cent in 2021.

He added that as of 2021, 17 out of 38 African countries for which debt sustainability was available were in dire distress.

Twelve countries were in moderate risk of debt distress, while six were already in dire distress, and one country had low risk of debt distress, he added.

Politics / Imran Molaasan: Yoruba Muslims Will Suffocate If Nigeria Disintegrates by Ctorch: 6:23am On Jun 24, 2021
Sheikh Imran Molaasan of Iwo City, the National President of Jama’ at Ta ’awunil Muslimeen, spoke at a recent lecture in Akure, the Ondo state capital, about some Muslims who prefer to use social media to condemn and attack themselves rather than to attack their common enemies, particularly those who have been digging graves in the name of Agitating for the Yoruba .

The sheikh spoke at a day lecture in Akure central mosque, which was organised by the Jama ’at Ta ’ awunil Muslimeen Akure chapter , which was a program to call the Muslims together and discuss the present and persistent situation of Nigeria.

He said the present situation with Yoruba Muslims makes him get worried, and he likened what is happening with what happened in Bosnia where millions of Muslims were killed for lack of comprehension, insight, and foresight amidst the Muslims in Bosnia, whereas other religious groups are secretly preparing for war .

He went and said ; "How can Yoruba Muslims at this delicate and challenging state be very quiet about the agitation for Oodua Nation as if it is like Paradise? How are they even at peace with the fight against Fulanis and not Islam, also how would their right be secured if the power finally falls in their enemy’s hands ?"

He was appreciated by the Chief Imam of Akure , Dr Abdul Akeem Yahya Akorede, who said the words of Sheikh are expensive and timely words that all Muslims need to hear and do something about . Also, he thanked the organisers of the program.

Politics / How The Aros Defeated And Reclaimed Their Lands From Ibibios by Ctorch: 8:29pm On Jun 23, 2021
How the Aros defeated and reclaimed their lands from Ibibios.

The story of Aro hegemony in Igboland during pre-colonial times is one that has been disputed and embellished over the years. It has been contended by Igbo historians and scholars. Different accounts abound of the reign and the hold of the Aro confederacy on Igbo land.

Today we go back in time to tell the story of the power and reach of the Aros in Igboland, the land of the long juju that gave the Europeans a tough time.

Aro Migration

As with every people, the Aros were said to have migrated to their present settlement around 1500.

According to a widely known account of the Arochuchukwu origin, the present land of Arochukwu was occupied initially by the Ibibio people who migrated to the area around 300 AD from the Benue valley, they founded the settlement of Obong Okon Ita and Ibom. Several years later, the first Igbo tribe led by one Agwu Inobia arrived and penetrated the Ibibio territory and founded his own settlement.

As we see among divergent groups domiciled in one area, fights are bound to happen – it soon ensued between the Igbo clan who referred to themselves as the Eze-Agwu clan, and their Ibibio landlords over the age-long issue of land. The communal clash went back and forth.

The Aro-Ibibio war got to a stalemate, the Eze-Agwu clan involved a priest from the Edda clan of the Northeastern Igbo, Nnachi. Nnachi in turn invited another clan of warriors from the east of Cross River, identified as Akpa people. The Akpa forces lead by Osim and Akuma Nnubi helped the Eze-Agwu clan conquer the remaining Ibibio territory.

After the conquest of the territory, an alliance of nineteen settlements (old and new) in the area was formed which gave birth to the Arochukwu Kingdom around 1650-1700. According to the account, the first King (Eze Aro) to rule the new allied Aro kingdom was a man named Akuma. After him, Oke Nnachi the son of Nnachi the priest took over, and ever since his descendants have ruled the throne to this day.

According to this version of the history of the Aros, after the Arochukwu kingdom has been firmly rooted, by the mid-18th century they started dispersing to other parts of Igbo land. Several Aro business families moved from their original settlement, penetrating into the Igbo hinterland and areas surrounding it.

These Are Aro Communities In Igboland:

* Aro Okija: In Ihiala, Anambra state

* Aro Izombe: Abia State.

* The Aros in Nkwere: Imo State

Etc.

The Aros’ movement was made necessary as they played a major role in the slave trade and also served as agents of Ibina Ukpabi Oracle, once the most dreaded deity in Igbo land. The dread surrounding the Ibina-Ukpabi and its famed powers was like a shield over the Aro Kingdom; it gave them an air of untouchable which served as access to all the length and breadth of Igbo land without hindrance or opposition.

They also employed the services of mercenaries from neighboring communities of Ohafia, Abam, and Edda. These warriors made them invisible as they moved about their business of acting as middlemen, thus the Arochukwu kingdom amassed wealth wielding great economic and spiritual power over other Igbo communities.

Other accounts of the history of the Arochukwu kingdom abound slightly varying in the narrative at the same time agreeing in several aspects like the migration of the Eze-Agwu clan, the chief priest, and his Edda lineage, the Akpa warriors, and the Ibibio settlement.

The Aro Hegemony

At the height of the Aro confederacy unequaled in wealth, alliance, and oracle presence, the aro influence spread across Igboland.

Mid-18th century, top Aro families had already established themselves as the middlemen for business across the shores with early Europeans. Their prominent business at that time was the slave trade, hence, it was necessary that they had to travel and penetrate into the hinterland of Igboland, somehow canvassing humans for sale.

As a tribe that is deeply spiritually conscious, the Aro’s intimidated neighboring Igbo communities further with Ibini Ukpabi famously known as Long Juju. Ibini Ukpabi was dreaded far and wide for his swift judgment, it further gave the Aros an air of mystery and superiority.

The Ibini Ukpabi was unquestionably the most famous oracle in Igbo, and it was through it that the Aro caretakers became universally recognized and revered across Igbo territory. Some historians claim that the Aro’s were the most well-known commercial traders in the Igbo hinterland in this way.

The influence of their deity (Ibini Ukpabi), the migration, and their military alliance with strong Igbo militarized communities (Ohafia, Abam, Abiriba, Afikpo, etc.) quickly established the Aro Confederacy as a regional economic power.

Some historians have however argued the alleged Aro hegemony on Igbo land. According to the arguments, the Aro had no other business going for them except the booming slave trade at that time and the influence they wield was the random sharing of some European wares to their allied communities in slave-raiding which in no way transcended to a hegemony.

These historians still maintained the analogy that the pre-colonial Igbo government was decentralized and that the zenith of the Aro influence was the slave trade era in which they enjoyed a monopoly. As Afigbo noted, “in eastern Igbo land, the Aro dominated directly in the distribution of foreign goods as well as in the assembling of slaves for sale to the coastal middlemen. He pointed out that; the wealth of the Aro oligarchy and its ascendency was based on the slave trade”

In the wake of the 20th century, however, the assumed Aro hegemony was threatened by the penetration of the Britons. The fear of losing their only monopoly and influence set in. This lead to the famed Anglo-Aro war of 1901 to 1902.

The Aro put up a good fight but there is no winning for someone with majorly machetes and bows and arrows in a gunfight.

The Aros did have power and reach in the pre-colonial Igbo era, but then one can argue that it was very limited.
