Politics / Just In: Fulani Herdsmen Invades Farmlands In Lagos State by Ctorch: 3:25pm On May 14, 2021
The Guardian Nigeria

Farming activities in parts of Epe Local Council in Lagos State have ceased, following Fulani herdsmen’s invasion of farmlands.

It was reported that herders attacked farm owners, forcing them to flee from the community to prevent further injuries.

The herdsmen, who were said to have migrated from Igangan in Oyo State, settled on the large expanse on Iganke farmland owned by the Ali Moibi-Balogun Family of Odo-Egiri Town in Eredo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) and were already erecting their structures on the land.

Following the development, the Ali Moibi-Balogun family wrote a petition to the state Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Inspector-General of Police, seeking immediate intervention to address the situation and reclaim the land from the herdsmen.

In the letter, dated May 10, 2021 and signed by its solicitor, Adeyemi Adegbite, the family said that it resorted to the letter after the police station in Noforija in Epe had allegedly labelled the family members suspects after they complained that their farmland had been invaded by herdsmen and that they were already threatening to wreck more havoc within the community.

“We hereby urge your Excellency to deplore your very good office to intervene in this matter, cause a very discreet investigation to be conducted, and ensure that our society is not turned into a lawless one, where might is right and power can be hijacked by a few powerful and privileged individuals or group of individuals to the detriment of the common and law-abiding citizens.”

Ali Moibi-Balogun added that they were the beneficial owners of a large expanse of land housing Iganke farmland “by virtue of inheritance from their forebears and according to the Yoruba Custom and Tradition.”

They noted that they had been exercising “rights of possession and ownership over the expanse of land without hindrance or challenge from any person, persons or quarters whatsoever.”

Politics / Obi Of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty Igwe Achebe Turns 80 by Ctorch: 1:45pm On May 14, 2021
Obi of Onitsha, His Royal majesty Nnaemeka Alfred Ugochukwu Achebe. CFR, mni is 80 years old today.
He is the 21st Obi of Onitsha dynasty.

Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe CFR, mni (born 14 May 1941) is a traditional ruler and the 21st Obi of Onitsha, in Anambra State, South-Eastern Nigeria. He is chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University since 2015, and was earlier chancellor of Kogi State University. Achebe also serves as the chairman of the board of Directors of Unilever Nigeria, and the Chairman of International Breweries (ABInBev) Nigeria. Before emerging as the Obi of Onitsha, in 2002, he had a long and distinguished career in the Royal Dutch Shell Group serving as Director in various companies in the group.

History of Onitsha

The history of Onitsha is said to have begun with the migration of its people from the Benin Empire towards the end of early part of the 16th century as a result of a wave of unrest, war and displacement unleashed by the Islamic movement from North Africa. One version said that it was during their passage through the outskirts of Ile-Ife that they acquired the name Onitsha, a corruption of Orisha Udo.

Another version has it that their migration to East of the Niger has to do with a misunderstanding that arose between the Onitsha family and Oba Esigie (1404-1550), following the slighting of their shrine, Udo, by the Oba. According to the legend, it was customary for newly installed Oba to pay homage to all important shrines in the Benin Kingdom by slaughtering a cow in the shrines enclave. But Oba Esigie is said to have refused to do this at the Onitsha people’s Udo-Shrine, hence the quarrel and the migration down towards the River Niger area and across it.

Ukpabi disagrees with the Oba Esigie angle and posits that the misunderstanding and migration was rather as a result of “a fight over a farmland. These other people fighting over farmland with the others and interest started coming. And because of interest, bitterness ensued and the two brothers decided to go their separate ways. One said, no, ‘I will now leave you, I’m going to Ado N’Idu.’ ‘Ado’ means border. ‘I will leave you and go and settle down on my own. I’m no longer going to be with you.’ That’s the issue. So, the two brothers had to separate.”

The immigrant settlers from Benin were said to have been helped by the Igalas to cross the river to settle in Onitsha in the 16th century, which was originally called Ado N’Idu. It soon became the capital of an Igbo Kingdom. In 1857, British traders in palm oil established a permanent station in the city, and Christian missionaries soon followed, headed by Bishop Samuel Ajayi Crowther (a Yoruba) and Reverend John Taylor (an Igbo).
In 1884, Onitsha became part of a British protectorate. The British colonial government and Christian missionaries penetrated most of Igboland to set up their administration, schools and churches through the river port at Onitsha.

Historically, Onitsha became an important trading port for the Royal Niger Company in the mid-1850s. Following the abolition of slavery, trade in palm kernels and other cash crops boomed around this river port. Immigrants from the hinterland were drawn to the emerging boom town as did the British traders who settled there and coordinated the palm oil and cash crops trade.

Onitsha is made up of three groups of people, Ukpabi reveals. The first is the Edos, the Ezechima’s team. The second, Igalas. They were the people that were fishing at the Niger by the time Onitsha people came to settle there. The third, the Igbos who are very close to the Niger and had integrated with them. These three groups make up what is today known as Onitsha.”

“Their tradition is blended with the three peoples, first the Edos, second the Igalas”, Ukpabi says. “In fact, in the past, there were some villages in Onitsha that spoke Igala. And they are made up of two villages. They are still in Onitsha. Onitsha is made up of nine villages. Two out of the nine are purely the Igalas: Ogbodu and Obigboru. So, that is how Onitsha people came to be.

“The ones with Edo influence are the monarchy itself. That’s the Eze Chima, that is the ruling villages. They are four in number. Umueze Aroli, Okebunabu (which include Umudei and Ogbabu) and Olosi. The present Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Achebe is the 21st Obi of Onitsha.”

Inter-marriages, says Ukpabi, have long existed between the Igalas and the Edos. “The people our ancestors met fishing at the bank of the River Niger were purely Igallas. They were following the Niger all the way from their place to Onitsha. So, they don’t normally come to the upper land. They remain there. They have their buildings in their canoes. So, we attracted them into coming to the hinterland. We started intermarrying with them. One of the outstanding monarchs of Onitsha, Obi Eze Aroli, the mother, Enubi, is from Igala.”

Politics / We Want Unity - Ogun State APC Youths by Ctorch: 2:52pm On May 10, 2021
Members of All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth League in Ogun State, at the weekend joined other progressive youths across the country to pray for peace and unity in Nigeria, especially as the country battles insecurity and economic crises.

The special prayer session tagged “National Prayer for Peace, Against Insecurity and Sabotage” held at Ori Omi, Totoro in Abeokuta, the state capital, where prayers were held for God’s protection of the nation, people, and leaders.
In his admonition, an Islamic cleric who is also the Publicity Secretary of the league, Mallam Abdulghaffar Adeleye, reviewed the virtues of Ramadan and prayed against disunity, unrest, anger, and crimes in the land.
He also prayed for those in power, security agencies, youths, and other sectors of the nation asking God to restore the country’s glory.

Adeleye used the medium to encourage residents of the state to support the State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for him to succeed in office.
He noted “leadership isn’t an easy task, but when the followers trust and believe in their leaders, the task becomes easy. So, lets continue to pray for our leader, Governor Dapo Abiodun”

In an exhortation by a Christian cleric, Pastor Laja who took his Bible readings from Psalms 91:1-2 and Psalms 60:9-12 said no one would be able to achieve greatness without being in a good relationship with God.

Speaking earlier, the coordinator of the group, Comrade Olamide Lawal, who is also the Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth and Sports, said the programme was on the order of the National Youth Leader of the APC, Barr. Ismael Ahmed, and conducted across all states of the federation, including FCT.

He pointed out that the program became necessary because Nigeria was passing through a trying moment.
“As a young generation, ours is to offer sacrifices of prayer for God to solve the myriads of challenges and problems we are facing as a nation”.
” We are praying for the unity, progress, prosperity of our nation; Nigeria. We want Nigeria to be progressing as one entity, not a dismembered nation.

“There is a need to gather as youths to cry to God for his mercies particularly in this holy month of Ramadan. That’s what we have done and we believe he has heard our supplications”, he concluded.

Politics / Police Employ Charms-wearing Vigilante Groups To Secure Police Stations In River by Ctorch: 3:26pm On May 07, 2021
Police employ charms-wearing vigilante groups to secure police stations in Rivers State.

As fears over possible attacks on police stations in different parts of South East and South-South continue to rise, and with police officers becoming jittery to confront the attacks heads on, some divisional police officers in Rivers State have employed vigilante groups like OSPAC to provide security for their stations. It was gathered that police stations in Rumuji and Ibaa all in Emohua Local Government Area and divisional police station in Ahoada Town are now guarded at night by charm-wearing OSPAC operatives. An OSPAC commander in Elele-Alimini who identified himself simply as Chiagi confirmed the development. He said their men currently provide security for police stations in the area since the advent of the unknown gunmen who have been attacking and burning police stations in parts of the South East and South-South.

He listed the police stations guarded by his to include the Ahoada town police station, Rumuji police station and stations in Omoku, Ibaa and Obagi. Asked if they’re paid by the police for such responsibility, Chiagi said that the police do not pay. He said that OSPAC took the initiative due to current trends which have put police officers in harms’ way. But confirming the development, a police officer who spoke on the conditions of anonymity said the vigilante group was employed to guard stations as police officers are constantly on the move to enforce the night-time curfew imposed by Governor Nyesom Wike. The police Inspector said the guarding of the stations by the vigilante is a temporary measure to secure the facilities against hoodlums who might take the opportunity of the absence of officers to attack the stations.
Politics / 50 Shallow Graves Discovered In The House Of Uduak Who Killed Umoren In Akwaibom by Ctorch: 1:28pm On May 07, 2021
Over 50 Shallow Graves Discovered in the House of Uduak who murdered Umoren in Akwaibom

By Mfon Okon
The gruesome murder of Late Miss Iniubong Ephraim Umoren by his alleged potential job giver, Mr. Uduak Frank Akpan has reveled what the wicked young man and his possible collaborators in the business of "Human Parts" were doing in Akwa Ibom State since 2015. In the course of this investigation, we were able to discover that it is true what a popular slogan says, "there is life inside life". Indeed, there is life inside life.

This young man called "Uduak Frank Akpan" was a devil with human clothe and face. Personally, I still wondering why people like this lives where human beings are living. This particular case should not just be a State and National case, but it should be an international case; were people outside the Continent of Africa should follow this case to an end and also ensure that severe punishments are given to whosoever that is involved irrespective of his/her position in government or society. The ugly incident should also serve as an eye opener to job seekers in the State and also serve as self-caution to young ladies who are looking for where green light is blinking.
The wicked specie called "Uduak Frank Akpan" is an indigene of Nung Ikono Ufok but stays in Nung Ikono Obio, his father's compound both in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria to destroy destiny and terminate lives of nursery school children, young girls, young men, Youth Corpers and even adults in the State. According to his confession, he said that he started this business since 2015. What was his business, he was into luring job seekers, taking young girls home for funs and kidnapping children which he eventually killed them, takes their sensitive parts and buried them in shallow graves and later exhumed and take their bones for ritual purposes.

Our investigation reveled that the reason why he buried his victims in shallow graves is to enable him take bones out of their decayed body. To succeed on this, he poured acid on whosever he killed so that it decay very fast. In the course of our investigation, we discovered rubbers filled with acid and other human belongings in the compound. We also learnt that Uduak Frank Akpan main aim on people he killed was for "bones" and for ritual purposes. This was gathered during Interactions with people at the scene of the incident.

According to the villagers who spoke strictly on condition of anonymity, said that they are surprised to know that this was the kind of business the young was into the community. When asked people why in the entire village they did not know about his movememt and his kind of business, they said that they can't believe what has happened to be true, looking at the way Uduak Akpan behaved in the community. They said that he is a very humble and easy going gentleman who doesn't have problem with the people in the community. They also said he doesn't stay in the compound, he only comes around. According to them, whenever he is around, he on his generator that is when they know that he is around. They also classify him as someone who doesn't have time to mingle anyhow with people, and that he only mine his own business.

A young who did not want his mentioned too said that he normally see him with friends in his Toyota Highlander and that somethings he brings in girls, some will run out of the compound. He said that one night a girl ran out of the compound naked and he Uduak ran after the her. According to him, when they approached him to know exactly what happened, he demanded that they should forget about that it is boy friend and girl friend issue they were having funs Inside. Anonymous speaker said that the girl insisted that instead of her to go back to the compound, she Preferred to follow them home. He also pleaded that the community should not be totally blamed on the atrocity of Uduak Akpan becuase they did not know what he was doing all these time.

While going around the compound, we were able to discover over fifty (50) shallow graves in the compound. Late Miss Iniubong Ephraim Umoren grave was among newly buried and exhumed graves in the compund. Items also found were over hundreds of female, male and children clothes. Youth Corpers uniforms, children textbooks, rubbers of acid, University of Uyo (UNIUYO) students workbook and many other items.

Here, we came to understand why issues of missing persons was becoming alarming day by day in the State. On several occasions, we have heard how people went for interview and they are nowhere to be found. This is what job swindlers are doing in the State. They keep on posting fake employment notifications everyway in the State just to lure job seekers. Take note, if you are young lady and are in habit of following men with exotic cars you do not know, think other wise.

As earlier said, this issue requires serious attention. It is a common sense that this young man is not the only one in this business. We can't just believe that after taking all these human parts he will go straight to market and sell them. The are copartners in this business. All of them must be fetched out.

Politics / Secession: Yoruba Group Seeks DSS, Police’s Clampdown On Igboho, Other Agitators by Ctorch: 4:05pm On May 06, 2021
Secession: Yoruba group seeks DSS, Police’s clampdown on Igboho, other agitators

A Yoruba organisation, Yoruba Appraisal Forum (YAF), has faulted the agitation by a group led by Mr Sunday Adeyemo, alias Sunday Igboho, that Yorubaland should secede from Nigeria, describing such move as treasonable and unpatriotic

The group also lampooned the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, for allegedly spearheading arson attacks and killings under the guise of secession in the Southeast.

YAF advised that Yoruba should resist the IPOB and their agents from brainwashing and infiltrating their ranks.

Speaking at a protest held in Ado Ekiti on Thursday to condemn the agitators, the group’s National Coordinator, Adeshina Animashaun, regretted the spate of violence in the southwest and southeast in recent times leading to loss of lives and property.

The rally, comprising Okada riders, different youth groups, and driver unions, moved from the Fajuyi Park and danced round Ado Ekiti, the capital city.

The proponents also despatched letters of protest to Governor Kayode Fayemi, the Ekiti State Council of Traditional Rulers and security agencies.

They flaunted placards with the inscriptions: ‘One Nigeria is Paramount’, ‘Stand Together and Love One Another’, ‘There is No Way We can Survive as a Nation And in The World Without Unity’, ‘Individually We are One Drop, Together we are An Ocean’, among others.

While lampooning Igboho and his ilk, Animashaun said: “Nigeria should not go the way of Somalia. Somalia is no longer the same today, because of war.

“I don’t want to even witness war throughout my lifetime, because we knew what we lost in Yoruba race during the 2020 #EndSARS protest.

“On our part as YAF members, we want to warn sternly that we won’t allow any group or individual to turn the Southwest into a theatre of war.

Our Yoruba brothers involved in this evil enterprise or plot to destabilise the Yoruba race should retrace their steps to avoid dire consequences.

“We recorded huge losses in the southwest during the #EndSARS protest in terms of burnt property worth trillions of naira, not to talk of valuable human lives destroyed due to the violence that followed the EndSARS.

The federal government, police, and men of the Nigerian army and other security agencies should take urgent steps to stop the Yoruba independence agitators and freedom fighters before they set the entire country ablaze”.

Animashaun urged the federal government to display its political will by propelling the Department of State Services, military, and the police to activate their machinery against these elements in the southwest before the situation escalates.

He said if actions are not taken swiftly to checkmate the rising violent tendencies of the agitators, the southwest will be immersed into unprecedented cataclysm.

Animashaun added that; “These agitators were being emboldened by the recent spate of attacks on security infrastructure and personnel in the Southeast, especially the attacks on police stations and killings of innocent policemen.

“It is very clear that the masterminds of this violence are bent on throwing Nigeria into chaos to put governments at both state and federal levels into violence to enable them execute their respective evil plans for Nigeria.

“We learnt that these elements have begun to mobilise their members in the southwest for the next phase of their so-called agitation for Yoruba indepedence and self determination by engaging in more violent protests and bloody confrontations with government.

“But should they refuse to take our modest advice to desist from their devilish plans and unpatriotic activities in Yorubaland, they should be prepared to face dire consequences as we would no longer fold our arms and allow them destroy our peace, economy and social wellbeing”, the YAF boss stated.

Politics / CBN Worries Over Low Participation Of South East In Its Intervention Programmes by Ctorch: 12:29pm On May 05, 2021
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has decried the low participation of the South-East in its economic intervention policies and programmes.

The acting director, Corporate Communications Department of the bank, Mr Osita Nwanisobi, disclosed this yesterday during the CBN Fair in Enugu.

Nwanisobi said that the CBN intervention programmes were meant to create jobs, engender financial inclusion and make the people have access to finance.

He said Nigerians need to leverage the intervention programmes of the apex bank for a better living at a time when inflation was spiking and prices of food items souring.

Nwanisobi said the aims of the CBN intervention in the real economy were to create jobs, bring down food prices, financially include the excluded and engender inclusive growth.

“This CBN Fair enables us to create awareness of all the policies and interventions of the bank and to talk to our people on how they can leverage the programmes.

“We noticed that there seems to be lethargy in terms of people from the zone embracing the CBN interventions.

“There is also the need for the state governments to leverage the Anchor Borrowers Programme to improve the lives of the people,”
he said.

Nwanisobi said that the apex bank in its bid to engender inclusiveness started its Commodity Development Initiative with 10 commodities “but now, we are at about 22 commodities.”

“In choosing the commodities we intervene in, we look at the possible impacts and those that will help us to create quick wins. We also intervene in areas where we have comparative advantage and not just for local production but for export also,” he noted.

He said that the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, was very passionate about the 37 interventions of the apex bank, adding that the South-East could do much better in accessing them.

In a goodwill message, the Enugu State commissioner for Agriculture, Mr Martins Idu, appealed to the CBN to domesticate some of its intervention programmes to enable more people to participate.

Politics / 15 Out Of 17 Governors Present In Southern Governors Forum Meeting by Ctorch: 11:29am On May 05, 2021
Governors in the Southern part of the country under the Southern Nigeria Governors Forum on Tuesday met to discuss the state of the nation.

The meeting which was held virtually was at the instance of the chairman of the South West governors forum, Rotimi Akeredolu and the chairmen of both South-South and South-East Governors’ Forums Ifeanyi Okowa and David Umahi of Ondo, Delta and Ebonyi respectively.

Vanguard was informed that fifteen of the 17 Governors from the Southern part attended the meeting.

They include; Ekiti State Governor who doubles as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Dr Kayode Fayemi, Nyesom Wike(Rivers), Ifeanyi Okowa(Delta), David Umahi(Ebonyi), Godwin Obaseki,(Edo), and Lolo Cecilia Ezeilo(deputy governor of Enugu representing the governor).

Others are Douye Diri(Bayelsa), Emmanuel Udom(Akwa Ibom), Okezie Victor Ikpeazu(Abia), Hope Uzodimma(Imo), Dapo Abiodun(Ogun), Gboyega Oyetola (Osun), Seyi Makinde(Oyo) and Babajide Sanwo-Olu(Lagos).

The Governors who called for commitment and unity in addressing issues that affect the country, particularly Southern Nigeria, stressed the need to put the country first in the face of the trying times.
The full details of the outcome of the meeting were still sketchy as of press time.

Vanguard was however informed that part of the governor’s resolution was to meet in Asaba, the Delta State Capital, next week to harmonize positions aimed at dousing the tension in the country.
But a source close to one of the governors said although the meeting was long overdue, the move by the three governors was commendable.

The source said “The three governors, especially the chairman of the Southwest Governors Forum have provided good leadership and direction to the extent that a proper path to confidence-building has been laid.

“It is coming a bit late but it has largely shown that there are still leaders who think of the nation’s unity first before any other.
“The kernel of the meeting was that Nigeria is too important to let into a conflagration. It’s a good move, no doubt”, he said.

Politics / High Cost Of Marriage Ceremonies In Ogoniland And It’s Consequences by Ctorch: 7:41am On May 04, 2021
So it’s becoming worrisome the manner at which Bride Price for our ladies is increasing such that young men are finding it difficult to marry because of the cost and unnecessary attachments in marriage list in Ogoniland.

I recently embarked on a mini research on the cost of Bride price in Ogoniland and discovered that, the amount charged by parents isn’t only suspicious but, also very alarming and calls for concern.

In times past, marriage wasn’t like it is today. It was based on “mutual understanding” between the parents of the groom and bride. One can recall how most of our fathers got married with little cash available provided you have the strength and ability to keep a woman as wife and cater for the children.

You will noticed our fathers married at the tender age of 19-25 years and by the time they got to 40 years, they are done with children. Some even married many wives without stress.

All of us are aware that, marriage wasn’t for sale and as such, a woman can decide to divorce and even pay back the dowries paid on her head though, it required some traditional rituals known as “Aa be dam” or “Le a maa bu”(A ritual performed by women to return back to their family members safely).

Now, take a critical look at the situation today where negotiations for marriage is taken as an opportunity to make money.
You see all the elders and uncles who never bought a pen or pant for the girl coming to claim “Korkoi pee” and “Akopee pee”.

They will add salt and pepper and by the time you’re done, you will be left with nothing to even start life with your new wife. One is wondering about the contents of marriage list these days in our local communities. Someone whispered to me that some families now add phones, lady bikes and sometimes foam inside marriage list.

I know some people will still come here to argue against the fact that today, a young man of 30-35 years of age is yet to marry and if you ask him, he will tell you “bros, no cash(Kpughi naa le)”.

How much that is supposed to be paid wouldn’t have been determined by parents alone because some parents are greedy and this is also affecting the ladies.

I think it’s high time the Ogoni Council of Chiefs and Elders sat over this or expect more bachelors and spinsters in our society and this aggravates crime.

Recently, the Okpata people did their own and now, with little cash you can marry.

If you go to some parts of the world where people are reasonable, you will find out that with N50,000, marriage is completed no matter the degree the lady acquired.

What happened to our people (Ogoni) that bride price is now on the increase?

The degree of crimes may also reduce if some people get married and turn from evil because marriage can change the mindsets of young people.

Think Ogoni!

Politics / Non-christians In My Domain Are Safe – Igbo Muslim Monarch In Imo State by Ctorch: 7:41am On May 02, 2021
Eze (Dr) Sheikh Abdulfatah Chimaeze Emetumah III is the 9th Ofor of Umuofor autonomous community and a member of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers. He is also the grand imam of his community and Igbo land, as well as the deputy chairman, Council of Ndi Eze in Oguta, and the deputy chairman, Traditional Rulers of Oil Producing Communities of Nigeria (TROMPCON). In this interview, he spoke on his experiences as a Muslim presiding over the affairs of a Christian-dominated community.

You described yourself as Emetumah 111 and Ofor IX of Umuofor; can you explain the two titles?

The Umuofor autonomous community is an ancient kingdom. My late father ruled Awa, which was also an autonomous community made up of Awa itself, Ejemekwuru, Abaziem and Umuofor. Years back, before the demise of my father, the other communities became autonomous. As you know, in Igbo land, every Duke and Harry wants to be king; that’s why other communities became autonomous and had their own traditional rulers. So, I am now the traditional ruler of Umuofor only.

My great grandfather, Nnadirinwa was a king under the Umuofor ancient kingdom, then my grandfather Uba Emetumah, as well as my father, Eze AbdulGafar Ihuarueze Emetumah, also a Muslim. He was Emetumah II, and by the grace of the almighty God, today I am Emetumah III.

How did you become a Muslim?

Nobody enters into the Islamic religion unless by God’s grace, but the process here might be human. My father was a founding member of the Anglican Church here in Umuofor. When the civil war ended in 1970, by 1971 or thereabouts he was going to Owerri to sell some ornaments he bought during the war. He was a Biafran millionaire, so he used most of his money to buy some ornaments. When the war ended, any time we lacked food he would take some of them to Owerri to sell and get Nigerian currency. One day he was going to Owerri, and at Ogbaku or somewhere, he saw a man wearing a Muslim gown. He called the man, probably thinking that if he could buy those things off him, he won’t have any cause going to Owerri. He saw the man as Hausa, so he spoke the language him. My father spoke Hausa because he had lived in Kaduna, where I was born. The man told him that he was not Hausa but Igbo like him. He told him that he had something to give him, which was more than what he was selling. He asked what it was and the man said he wanted to give him Islam. My father said Islam was Hausa religion, but the man said, ‘I am not Hausa. I am Igbo like you.’

From there, they exchanged dates. That was how my father was converted to Islam. All the members of his family and almost half of this village joined him because he was a man of goodwill. However, most of them are no longer Muslims, but few of them have remained till date.

I was named Abdulfatai, which is an Arabic word for success or opening. It is also in the book of Mark. This Arabic we speak was called Aramaic in the days of Christ. When Christ wanted to open the eyes of the blind or ears, or heal the deaf, he would say, ‘Efata.’ Efata means open or be opened. That refers to my name, Fatai. One day, one of the bishops came here; I told him that my name was also in the bible and he laughed.

What is the population of Muslims in Umuofor?

I think Muslims make up 20 or 25 per cent of the population of the community here.

In those days, there was some level of religious tolerance, but these are troubled times, with religious and inter ethnic crises here and there. How have you been successfully presiding over the affairs of your community as a Muslim?

When my father died in 2007, after the statutory one year mourning period, they applied to become an autonomous community in 2019, and between 2010 and 2011, it was approved. They unanimously appointed me as their traditional ruler. They did not bother about my faith. As a matter of fact, here in my cabinet, Christians are in the majority. Any time we hold Council meetings, the Christians offer the prayers. Although we have few Muslims here, I don’t allow them to offer their prayers. At the end, all of us will say, “In Jesus name, Amen.’’ When I am praying before the Christian community, I pray in the Christian way. I only pray in the Muslim way when I am with my Muslim brothers.

When they are doing anything in the church and I am invited, I go there. Two weeks ago, when the vicarage of the Anglican Church was opened, I was there with the late Bishop Oti. I am always happy because during Easter and Christmas festivities I join them in worship. I join them whenever they are doing anything.

But it has not been easy. You know that in every 12, there must be a Judas. So we still have those who are causing problems. There are people who lack knowledge, but they are in minority. Since God created the world, evildoers and anarchists have always been in the minority; that is why they have not been able to succeed. In Nigeria, we are about 250million in population, but those who are causing trouble are not up to one million, so they will not succeed.

What is the attitude of your community towards the few Muslims from the northern part of the country?

I have to be frank with you, since 1999 there has been what I call Islam phobia in the South-East. And everybody from the North is looked at as a Muslim. That’s one of the problems we have been facing.

How have you been able to protect them against attacks?

Whenever there is a problem some of them run to my palace. I have a mosque here where some of them may be harboured. Some of them also go to Owerri and stay. In Oguta and Egbema, whenever there is a problem, we protect them.

You would also realise that there are bad eggs among them. When we were kids, and up till now, you would see true herdsmen with stick or knives to repel reptiles or fight danger on their way, but today, you see them with guns. It is very strange. To me, those with guns are not true herdsmen. Most of them are from outside the country and some are Boko Haram fighters who have infiltrated genuine herdsmen to perpetrate criminal activities. So, some of the herdsmen have to take the blame.

In this area, whenever there is any problem, other traditional rulers seek my intervention as a Muslim.

What is your advice on the general religious phobia in the country?

Sometime ago in 2018 when I paid a prayer visit to Mr President, I told him that nobody was Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba or Fulani. These things are mere linguistic nomenclatures. All of us are God’s creatures. We are human beings. All men are born equal before God. We are blacks by race, Africans by tribe and Nigerians by nationality. So Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba – whatever you call it – are interrelated. We share a lot in common.

Most of us in this country practise xenophobia and call it religion. While xenophobia is about fear and hate, religion is all about love and peace. All over the world, not only in Nigeria, we are abusing religion.

Christ’s message is love (Love your neighbour as you love yourself) and Islam is peace (Salaam). The greeting of every Muslim anywhere is salaam. Now, where is the peace? It only exists in our mouth.

When a former president of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, was asked when Africa would develop, he said until they stopped killing one another. Africans kill one another because they see themselves on tribal and religious lines. That is the problem.

Tribes are divine, but tribalism is evil. Nations are divine, but nationalism is evil. Also, religion is divine, but intolerance and bigotry are evil.

What I am preaching is peace. Whether you are a Muslim or Christians, there is time for everything. God knows why he allowed 250million in this country. If the country is going to disintegrate, he knows. No country is bound to stay together forever, but if you do it before its time, the consequences will be high.

Politics / Video: 494 Nigerians Set To Be Deported By Ghana by Ctorch: 5:18pm On Apr 30, 2021
Video: 494 Nigerians set to be deported by Ghana
Ghana has announced plans to deport 494 Nigerians over illegally entering into the country.
David Fianko-Okyere, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and spokesperson for the Regional Police Command, said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Bolgatanga.
The police spokesperson said the region had implemented a new strategy which included a 24-hour robust patrol on highways and swoops, especially in the Bolgatanga Township. He said the operation led to the arrest of 507 foreigners in the Bolgatanga Municipality and its environs who were citizens of Burkina Faso and Nigeria.
According to him, apart from the intelligence of the police service, they also had information from the public about the influx of foreign nationals into their communities. He said the residents attributed the rising crime in the region to alleged illegal activities of the foreigners and the swoop conducted by the police service.
He said preliminary investigations by the Ghana Police Service indicated that those arrested stayed in the country without proper documents but said the Ghana Immigration Service was in the process of processing all the foreigners before deporting them.
The PRO noted that apart from those arrested, some Nigerians voluntarily handed themselves over to the police service to be deported back to Nigeria.

Politics / Islam In Yorubaland, education And Culture-muslim Ummah Of South West by Ctorch: 8:18am On Apr 30, 2021
Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria ( MUSWEN ) has set the record straight on the history of Islam in Yourubaland, with the lunching of a book titled: ‘ Islam in Yorubaland : History , Education and Culture ’ .
The book was presented by former Chief of Naval Staff , Admiral Jubrila Ayinla amid cheers from dignitaries such as the Vice President , Yemi Osinbajo, Sultan of Sokoto and President - General , Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA ) Alhaji Muhammed Sa ’ ad Abubakar , Ooni of Ife , Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi , Osun State Governor , Mr Isiaq Gboyega Oyetola, and All Progressives Congress ( APC) National Leader Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu , among others.
Applauding MUSWEN for the development , Sultan noted that aside from history, religious leaders and scholars across Nigeria must rise up to feeding their followers with truth and the true meaning of faiths they profess .
Osinbajo also hailed MUSWEN for documenting history of Islam in Yorubaland . Represented by the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu , the Vice President urged religious leaders to continue to spread the message of peace and religious tolerance .

MUSWEN President - General , Alhaji Rasaki Oladejo , described the book presentation as historic for Muslims in Southwest . According to him , it was a realisation of a dream to set the historical records of Islam in Yorubaland straight.
“ What makes the difference in today ’ s presentation is the calling of the spade by it’ s real name for centuries, Muslims in Nigeria ’ s Southwest have had to accept their spiritual plight as a fate accompli when the concept and conditions for practicing their religion had to be dictated to them by their counterparts in other religions , ” he said .
Oyetola congratulated MUSWEN for championing the book project. He said : “ This well- researched work of history, no doubt , has benefited from the rich career of the authors whom I was told are affiliated to Yorubaland by birth and to Islam by choice . It, therefore , follows that the book before us can be classified as the most authoritative in our recent history as far as the history of Islam in Yorubaland is concerned . ”
Ooni called for harmonious relationship among all tribes in Nigeria irrespective of their religious background.
Founder of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB ) Fola Adeola said one of the factors of a book was to educate and correct information as well as engaging minds . He noted that conscious efforts have been made by the book to reflect how Muslims look.
He said Muslims should stop hiding their potential and push forward everything to show their identity as Muslims . He said Muslims in Nigeria can better understand themselves when the negative impression has cleared .

National Missioner of Ansar - Ud - Deen Society of Nigeria , Imam Abdur- Rahman Ahmad stated that the aim of Islam is not to antagonise the society but to maintain a stable relationship with the people.
National Leader , All Progressives Congress ( APC), Bola Ahmed Tinubu , called for unity among Nigerians in the face of insecurity .
Nigerians , he said , should support the Federal government ’ s efforts at quelling insurgents and banditry . Represented by the former Deputy Governor of Lagos State , Dr Idiat Adebule, Tinubu urged Nigerians to be wary of actions capable of plundering the country into ethno -religious crisis .
Tinubu acknowledged and appreciate the role of MUSWEN in promoting peace and harmonious relationship amongst the Muslim Ummah in South West Nigeria . He further encouraged the umbrella body to continue to use the platform to promote peaceful co - existence and good neighborliness in the face of the insecurity been experienced in the country presently
