PoliticsFrom Joe Igbokwe Before , now to Joe Yorubakwe. Still right in Nigerian context. by Ctorch(op): 12:34pm On Aug 16, 2019
I think something is wrong somewhere with our unnecessary attacks on Joe.

If Joe says he is not an igbo man , I didn't see anything wrong in that because it was never Joe Igbokwe before but Joe Yorubakwe from Ikorodu Lagos State.

Recently he was appointed a commissioner in Lagos state and I enjoin others natives in diaspora to congratulate him on this achievement.

He must work for the future and empowerment of his people (Yorubas). The youth we know are the most vulnerable and he should ensure whatever office he occupies, he should make sure their affairs come first and most importantly create employment to capture the graduates on the street.

Congratulations Mr Joe Olanike Olaniyi Yorubakwe.

Go and serve with fear of God.

And what are the basis of your assumption? We understand that Edo State People's preference for APC government in the state has so much planted resentment into you Igbos that you have for the past 6 years been peddling this narrative to blackmail the people into going back to the PDP which you erroneously assume is the SS' and SE's party. But we don't give a damn because your refusal to also lump Delta State as well with Youruba despite her obvious more manifestly Yoruboid Itsekiris and Olukunmis together with Urhobos and Isokos who trace their ancestry to Edo all expose the political undertone behind it. As long as you keep trying to paint Edo as Yorubas twins without carrying along Deltans who with their own mouths claim sameness of ancestors with Edos, then your hypocrisy and quest for political correctness becomes obvious even to a simpleton. Keep deluding yourself.
keep deceiving yourself in this 21st century.

What can be see and cleary dottted with simple eye is what you trying to deny by bringing politics to a nice submission and little Omission.

The similarities shared between yoruba and edos is just beyond simple eye and even to the layman cannot bee denied.

There is no political correctness but facts. If there is/are any difference is minimal but on greater scale can be converged.

Unfortunately, you seem unaware that Edo is not even a homogeneous state in terms of tribes. Isn't it ironical that in your imagination you feel Edo should be added to Yoruba despite no tribe in the state has any fundamental cultural affinity with Yorubas but for a state like Delta with manifestly Yoruboid groups like Itsekiris and Olukunmis you have no qualms in seeing it not added to Yoruba.
Virtually all Edo Languages have the v, z and ch sounds which are absent in Yoruba hence one is always left wondering where your likes conjure this pro-Yoruba affinity theory for Edo while leaving out Delta State despite her more Yoruboid indigenous peoples. Does the need for political correctness really take Nigerian (especially Igbos) this far into manufacture of false narratives against all glaring facts and logic?
Edo and yoruba are two inseparable twins.

so I wonder what you driving at. The two has similarities in all manner.

The Enugu State Government has sacked 10 secondary school teachers and suspended about 200 others for alleged misconduct .
Another 500 teachers have also had their salaries withheld as disciplinary measures to make the system functional.
The Chairman , Post Primary School Management Board , Mr . Nestor Ezeme, disclosed this Wednesday when the State Assembly House Committee on Education paid him a visit .
Ezeme told the committee members that when the incumbent administration came into office , there was rot in the educational system and the board had to intensify efforts in supervision and monitoring of teachers .
“ Part of our job is supervision of schools , discipline of teachers and students , payment of their salaries , among others.
“ Our main duty , however , is supervision and we go for that three times a week. We visit schools unannounced and take the teachers and principals by surprise .
“ It has yielded results . We saw teachers that have not been in school for two weeks .
“ In some cases, the principal will make arrangements whereby some teachers come on Monday , others on Tuesday and so on . But we have changed all that now, ” he explained .

PoliticsPolice Arrest 15 IPOB, MASSOB Members In Ebonyi by Ctorch(op): 6:54pm On Aug 14, 2019
The Ebonyi State Police Command , on Wednesday , confirmed the arrest of 15 suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign States of Biafra in the state .
They were arrested in a bush at Amasiri Community in the Afikpo North Local Government Area of the State , on Tuesday , August 13 , 2019 , by a combined team of the men of the Nigerian Police and other security agencies .
The suspects were allegedly planning how to hold their 2019 summit in the state .

The groups ’ annual meeting, our correspondent gathered , was billed to take place between Tuesday , August 13 and Wednesday , August 14 , 2019 in the state .
The PUNCH reports that the arrest of members of the separatists ’ groups , came , 24 hours after the Ebonyi State Government, led by Governor David Umahi, maintained that the IPOB remained a proscribed organisation and warned members of the public against its activities in the state.
In a statement signed by the Command ’ s spokesperson , Loveth Odah , “ The Ebonyi State Police Command , in active collaboration with other security agencies in the state , while acting on credible intelligence report that IPOB /MASSOB members will have their 2019 convention in the state , on 13 and 14 August , 2019 , embarked on massive “ show of force ” covering the entire length and breadth of the state with particular focus on identified flashpoints .
“ The exercise dominated the entire state and frustrated the activities of IPOB / MASSOB members , thereby denying them the opportunity to hold their meeting in the prearranged venue .
“ They were however traced to a hideout in the bush around Amasiri community, in Afikpo North LGA of the state where fifteen (15 ) members led by one Rev . Ogonna Nnachi ‘ M’ , about 70 years of age were arrested . Items recovered from them include Biafra Currency ( 2 pounds ), branded Biafra T- Shirts , caps and bangles .
“ Upon interrogation, their leader Rev . Ogbonna narrated that they were planning the burial of one of their members who died in Lagos , but was to be buried in Ohaozara LGA of the state and also planning the building of a monument in honour of late Odumegwu Ojukwu at Owerri Imo State . The arrested members were handed over to SCID for further interrogation and profiling . ”
Odah added, “ Ebonyi State Police Command will continue to explore all crime - fighting tactics by combing all hideouts of criminals / criminal - minded persons with the view to deny them the space to carry out their acts.
“ The general public is as usual enjoined to assist the police and other security agencies by providing credible information on any suspicious activity and movements of persons or goods . ”

AAC berates Amaechi for using party to ‘foment trouble in Rivers’, explains Sowore’s expulsion

The African Action Alliance (AAC) has berated the former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, for allegedly using the party ‘to foment trouble in Rivers State’.
The party also said that it expelled its National Chairman and 2019 presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore because of his subversive activities by trying to change the government through unconstitutional means. Sowore, who is one of the leaders of #RevolutionNow protest is
in the custody of the the Department of State Services, DSS.

The party took the decision at the National Convention of the party held at Rockview Hotel, Owerri.

The motion to expel Sowore, Malcom Fabiyi and 28 others, was moved by Chief Emeka Ezeife and seconded by Nasiru Abdul Rahman.
Sowore was replaced by Dr. Leonard Nzenwa.
Nzenwa who bemoaned how Amaechi used the party in Rivers, said that AAC is not in alliance with any party, vowing that the party has the capacity and capability to win election in Rivers State without outside assistance.
Amaechi-led All Progressives Congress, APC in Rivers adopted the AAC candidate, Biokpomabo Awara in the 2019 guber election in the state.
Nzenwa accused Sowore of anti party activities and bringing the party into disrepute through his actions.
He said that though the party is poised to take over power in 2023, it could only do that through the ballot box.
Nzenwa said, “The AAC is poised to take over power in 2023 through the ballot and not through any unconstitutional means. We acknowledge the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful protest against government but we are aware that this constitutional right does not include the right to resort to unconstitutional take-over of the government of the country or any part thereof.
“We dissociate the party from any move to unconstitutionally topple the government and any individual who may have done that in the name of the party did so without our consent and clearly did not do so in the name of the party or on its behalf”.

PoliticsOil Bunkering: Soldiers Burn Houses In Rivers Community by Ctorch(op): 11:34am On Aug 09, 2019
Soldiers of the Nigerian Army have allegedly invaded and burnt down houses in the Kalaekuleama community, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The invasion of the community and the sacking of some residents, it was learnt , followed the suspension of oil bunkering activities in the community.
It was gathered that personnel of the Operation Delta Safe carried out the invasion and destruction of property on Monday , July 29 , 2019 .
Many residents of the community have called for an investigation into the incident .
A chief in the area , Joel Asobari , told our correspondent that it was not true that the community was harbouring illegal oil bunkering operators and called on President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the matter .
He said the soldiers assaulted him and also shot indiscriminately in the community and sacked many of the residents.
Asobari added that the soldiers shot one fisherman from Akwa Ibom State , who was recording the operation .
He said , “ We were in our house when the JTF men came in a gunboat and a speed boat. The boats were loaded with armed soldiers.
“ When they came , they said the residents should vacate the community because they wanted to burn down the houses. They went into action without listening to our pleas and rendered us homeless .
“ We are pleading with the government to come to our aid. We are now without clothes and are homeless . ”

Asobari explained that despite pleas the soldiers burnt down the community, adding that the only school in the area was also affected .
“The only school that we built has been burnt to ashes ; now, our children have no school again . We want the government to intervene and help us out , ” he added .
Calls made to the coordinator , Joint Media Campaign Centre , Operation Delta Safe , Major Jonah Ohnua- Kalu , went unanswered .

SOMETHING HAS HAPPENED TO THE YORUBAS by Moses Oludele Idowu

Something has happened to the Yoruba's. I don't know precisely what it is. However, it is not a good thing. Of this I am sure.
Now a brief voyage into history.
In 1967 Nigeria was in a dire situation similar to what she is in now. Many have written about the similarities and seen the parallels between the two periods. But even in the midst of that chaos in 1967 the collective voice of the Yoruba's rang out. As a matter of fact the Yoruba voice was the soundest, boldest and clearest in the midst of that cacophony of confusion, when even the government at the centre was in turmoil.

"If by any act of omission or commission the East is forced or allowed to secede from Nigeria, the West will also secede."

That was Obafemi Awolowo, rising from the meeting of the Yoruba Delegates and reading the position paper collectively agreed by all the leaders of Yoruba. It was a clear statement, it was coherent and unambiguous. The whole speech itself is very short. Because it is when you don't know what you are doing or saying that you ramble and perambulate.
That clarion voice from the Yoruba in unison roused the Military government and Gowon out of their slumber. In 1967 when Yoruba's spoke Nigeria listens and came at attention. Africa listened and even the world took notice.
It was not an idle boast or an empty threat. They had the means to end Nigeria if they so desired. And the Yoruba's warned Gowon that if they ever frustrated IBO's out of Nigeria then they should not count on it that Yoruba's would remain. If Nigeria was lopsided even with the East in Nigeria, then it would be more lopsided with only two regions left and Yoruba's too would have to leave.
That was 1967. The statement was made loud and clear when a military government was in place, without any fear.
As a matter of fact only among the Yoruba's was there a clarion voice of definite statement and demand. Which the military had to meet immediately.
That was 1967.

Fifty two years after, you know something terrible has happened to this once- marvellous race.
How do I know that?
It can be seen in the discordant voices, staccato tunes and contradictory speeches emanating from kings, leaders and elites of Yoruba's. You know there is trouble when you cannot decipher what is being said. You know there is a problem when leaders speak in parables at a time when plain language is required. In 1967 the leaders of the Yoruba's spoke in clear, concise and coherent language, Awo was only reading what they agreed on. In 2019 i have not heard any such clear and unambiguous statement.
First it was the Ooni of Ife, with his statement which is so notable not so much for what it said as much as what it left unsaid. That statement is notable for its self- contradiction. First it says Yorubas would defend themselves. Then again, in another breadth, it was asking Buhari to help Yorubas to defend themselves. How will Buhari help you to defend yourself? Either he defends you or you defend yourself. That statement will remain a model of linguistic obscurity so common in Yoruba religion and metaphysics.
Then the Alaafin released his own Open Letter to Buhari and immediately reading that speech you could see the disagreement between his own position and that of the Ooni. Infact, the crux of the age- long feud was thinly veiled in that letter for those who can discern.
Then Obasanjo's letter, which is more as a statesman rather than as a Yoruba man.
Within days of meeting Buhari, the Ooni was in Aso Rock again to meet Osinbajo, the Vice President.
Then all the notable Obas in Yoruba land went to Aso Rock to meet Buhari. And days after their meetings the Fulani herdsmen continued with their killings and kidnapping, without let and hindrance. Even two Wednesdays ago they still attacked motorists at Ogere, on the Expressway and last week the whole world heard the kidnapping of 5 RCCG pastors.
So nothing has changed and nothing is likely to change.
It is time our traditional rulers give themselves the honour and respect deserving of their offices. They are talking too much for their own good. Yoruba leaders are talking too much and it is not helping them. Perhaps they have not realized it.
Noise is a sign of weakness, not strength. It is a proof of how weak and weakened Yorubas now are. If Yorubas have not seen this, their antagonists can see it and they take notice.
When last did you see the Sultan in Aso Rock, or talking to the press? When was the last time you saw the Oba of Benin talking to the press?
In 1967 the Obas did not speak, they left that to their illustrious sons to do that. And that is how it should be.
In 1967 when Yorubas spoke a military government trembled and began to woo the Yoruba's. In 2019 Yoruba leaders and kings have spoken and a civilian government does not even bat an eyelid. That is the proof that Yoruba have lost power, they have ceded ground to the enemy by a series of actions that are beyond the scope of my present investigation.
That is why I warn the Yoruba to be extra careful at this time and quickly do the right thing to regain what they have lost.

" Remember where thou has fallen and repent and do the first works...", Jesus sent to a church in Ephesus but I think it is the best message to Yorubas at this time.
Today times have changed. 1967 is similar to 2019 but the dramatis personae are different. Will Yorubas incur defeat without war?
In 1967 Yoruba's were the strongest and most united of all the regions, in 2019 it is the weakest and most disunited of all the regions.
The Southeast governors forum have spoken in unison and with one voice that they would have nothing to do with RUGA - so the Rugayats and the Rugacats can take notice. The Middle belt have spoken against great odds. Likewise the Nigerdelta have spoken. What of the Yoruba? Where is the Southwest?
They are meeting, summit upon summit with no head or tail, with no communiqué nor verdict.
David Thoreau was indeed right: "O consistency, thou art a virtue".
Is it any wonder that Miyetti Allah is threatening all the governors in Yoruba land that they would be held responsible if anything happen to the Fulani's in their midst. How about that? Did you see what I am saying? What power do they have to hold elected governor responsible in a civilian dispensation? But they can see the weakness and the disunity. That is the state we are now in.

I want to now move to the second part of this article: why Yorubas are divided at this time and why they are the weakest and most endangered.
There are now 3 divisions among the Yorubas. Yorubas can now be grouped into three separate and diametrically opposed groups. Let us look at each:

1. BOURDILLON TRAIN OR 2023 PROJECT

The first division among Yorubas now is what I call the Bourdillon Train or the 2023 project. These are the politicians, leaders, elites and officials who are angling for the return of power to Yoruba in 2023 and want to use the Southwest as a launching pad for that ambition. And their followers, hangers on, ruffians, coat hangers, touts etc. They have many government officials, legislators, ministers etc in this group and they control the Press, the Lagos- Ibadan axial press, the traditional power of the Yorubas. Because of their ambition nothing the Buhari administration does is wrong and Yoruba welfare and collective destiny are subordinated to the whims and the fulfilment of the ambition of one man. The good and welfare of future generations are sacrificed on the altar of one man's ambition.
This group is further divided into three:

1. The 2023 proper whose ambition is rooted in the ambition of their leader and what they stand to benefit from it.

2. The Islamists

Make no mistake there are islamists among the Yorubas. They are not interested in democracy as in Sharia. It is real.
Remember that a former governor of Lagos state once confessed that some people have been putting pressure on him to go for Sharia? It was Bola Ahmed Tinubu who said it when Samson Ayorinde visited him.
Was it not an Alhaji, a Yoruba man who insisted a church must not stay around him during Raji Rasaq era for which cause Christ Chapel was demolished and uprooted? Was it not a Yoruba man who declared the birthday of Mohammed as public holiday, which is not even a public holiday in Saudi Arabia? Need I go on?
So make no mistake there are islamists among Yorubas and they would support anything Buhari government does whether good or bad.

3. The Religionists.
These are not islamists but they are committed Muslims. They know that Christianity is so entrenched in Yoruba land and will never be displaced by evangelism or whatever. So if RUGA will bring the Fulani's and other people of their faiths that may graphically alter the religious demographic of Yoruba land then it is okay with them. Say what you like, this group will never move against Buhari nor protest his actions even if it is against the strategic interests of Yoruba land.
This is why Yoruba is divided today and cannot speak with one voice. These would subvert anything that appears to be mildly critical of Buhari, who they see as champion of Islam at this hour.

2. The OPPOSITION

The second group consists of those who are opposed to any move that may endanger the Yoruba and their interests. They are ready for anything to redeem the honour of the Yorubas come what may.

3. THE USEFUL IDIOTS

The third group among the Yoruba at this time is what I call, borrowing Marx's expression, the "useful idiots."
They are divided into two:

1. The Hallelujah chorus of Buhari and APC. As far as these are concerned Buhari is the best thing to happen to Nigeria. Mr. Integrity can do no wrong or see no wrong. Everything is okay. And woe betides you if you criticize Buhari.
Among these are educated and educated illiterates or certificated illiterates, who have gone through schools without learning anything. They are incapable of coherent, logical and independent thinking. They include the army of paid media men and women who recycle the lies and worn out rhetorics of nonsense of this ghastly government. They include the army of yes men, sycophants and jobbers eating from this government and thus cannot see anything wrong with its policies.
At the same time when the Nigerian Christian Elders Forum was writing the British Parliament about the dire situations going on in Nigeria, a Yoruba man was there countering them with lies and half truths.
At the same time when kidnapping and killings were still going on in Yoruba land it was another Yoruba man leading Buhari Campaign Organization in a solidarity visit to Buhari; and another Yoruba, the Vice President was busy telling those in the Diaspora that the kidnapping and terrorism issue are exaggerated beyond proportion.
Yoruba's used to be known for plain speaking. Now they have become the masters of double speak. That is why you know that something has happened to this once- noble, regal race.
Then there is the army of know- nothings who due to no fault of theirs do not know the issues on ground. And do not understand them.

With all these divisions how will Yoruba ever speak with one voice?

What then is to be done?
The military is now to implement RUGA and 2019 budget has already provided for it according to what newspaper reports say. It is coming "by fire and by force." At my lecture on The New World Order on Friday I mentioned the larger political and religious backgrounds driving this and as an angle of international manipulation.
So what then is yo be done?
Hear this from me: the Fulani herdsmen are already in the forests surrounding Yotubaland and they will not leave. Also Buhari is not going to do anything against them. Take it or leave it.
Kidnapping will continue and terrorism from herdsmen will not abate. The experience of the 5 RCCG pastors is fresh. Even two Wednesdays ago they still killed people at Ogere, based on what I heard.
So what is to be done?
Let every town and village in Yoruba land raise its own militia yo defend its territory and police as ts forests. It is allowed under the law. It is logical.
The law allowed citizens to apprehend anyone breaking the law. It is not only police that can arrest under the law. Any citizen can arrest a law breaker and kidnapping is law- breaking.
They should be trained by ex- servicemen in their midst and armed with every weapon they can lay their hands on. After all the herdsmen carry weapons and it is illegal and no one is disarming them. If a group can carry weapons to do evil another group too can carry them to do good, to enforce the law and assert the Constitution. " The law is not made for the righteous man but for the lawless "- St. Paul.
" In a state if lawlessness it is criminal yo be law abiding ".- Fidel Castro.
Many will condemn me for saying this. Yoruba do- gooders, lizards, trying to play safe and engage in double speak... Yoruba vacillation. But this is time for truth- speaking. Something is not right. You can fight now or fight later with a diminished strength.
This is the last time I will write or say this. But remember time is running out. Soon we shall know who is right.
The most dangerous place for a nation or tribe to be is not to be defeated in war or lose in battle. The worst humiliation is to procure a "defeat without war." Something is telling me that Yoruba's especially by their vacillation and disunity are about to make this gamble.
A word for the wise is enough.

PoliticsThere Are Two Moments In History When, As A Yoruba, I Was Embarrassed by Ctorch(op): 9:46pm On Aug 08, 2019
There are two moments in history when, as a Yoruba, I was embarrassed.

The first was in 1966 when Yoruba leaders and traditional rulers went to the north after the massacar of 100,000 Igbo civilians to "thank" northern leaders for not allowing the mob to kill Yorubas as well.

The second was in 2019 when, two weeks after the daughter of the leader of Afenifere was murdered on the steets of the South West by Fulani herdsmen, Yoruba traditional rulers went to the north to pledge their loyalty and support to Buhari and thank him for "a job well done".

These two events were moments of shame. You do not pay homage to and thank tigers for eating your neighbor and not eating you for breakfast: you oppose and resist them!

Again you do not thank tyrants for not doing their duty and protecting the lives and property of your people: you call them to account, you hold them responsible and you keep them on their toes!

These two moments were not good examples of the courage, decency, fairness and good judgement that the Yoruba are known for. They represent a dark and inexplicable chapter in our history which most of us conveniently overlook and refuse to talk about. I feel a deep sense of shame and guilt whenever I consider them.

In 1966, before the outbreak of the civil war, 100,000 Igbo civilians were massacared in three months in the north and we the Yoruba did nothing to help them. Instead we crawled to the north to thank those that slaughtered them after it was all over.

43 years later in 2019, Baba Reuben Fasoranti's daughter was murdered in cold blood (together with thousands of other Yoruba sons and daughters over the last few months), by Fulani terrorists in the streets of the South West and we have done absolutely NOTHING about it or made ANY concrete plans or efforts to defend our people.

Instead of doing so we crawled to the north to "thank" a President who is meant to protect us from the Fulani terrorists and guarantee our safety but who has refused and failed to do so.

What makes it even worse is that that same President has put every single military, security and intelligence agency, except for the Navy, in the hands of northern Muslims and he has pointedly refused to declare the Fulani herdsmen as terrorists simply because he has a soft spot for them and they come from the same place.

It is time for the Yoruba nation to wake up, smell the coffee and take a new approach to these matters. The crawling has to stop!

We are not cowards, beggars and crawlers: we are bigger and better than that. We are a nation within a nation. We are 60 million strong and we are spread throughout the world.

We are a strong, proud, rich, honorable, humble, wise and noble people who are excellent in all our ways, who hate injustice and who have a kind, loving, accomodating, forgiving and liberal disposition.

Humility, charity, long-suffering and the ability to stomach all manner of insults, provocation and impudence from those far below us for long periods of time comes naturally to us but cowardice, stupidity, weakness and capitulation before those that physically attack our people is alien to us and is not in our genes.

We NEVER and we have never bowed to our invaders. We have always resisted them and we have always done so ruthlessly and successfully.

Once we decide to rise and stand firm, we are unbeatable. History proves that. We are slow to anger but irresistable in battle.

It is because of this that I daresay that we deserve a far better quality of leadership than what we are presently witnessing.

It is time for us to get real and accept the fact that the threat we are facing is existential.

History and posterity will not be kind to those of us that betray our people or that align with the aliens and unbelievers that desire to wipe us out and turn us into slaves.

PoliticsUndergraduates No Longer Enthusiastic About NYSC, Want It Reviewed by Ctorch(op): 7:08pm On Aug 08, 2019
Years back, Nigerian undergraduates are very enthusiastic and eager to be shortlisted for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Once they are through with their final year examination, they all look forward to the day they will be decked in the NYSC khaki attire and jungle boot, and above all be addressed as a “corper.”
But that is no longer the same today! Times have changed… society also has changed, things are no longer the same, say some Nigerian undergraduates that spoke with The Guardian, recently. They lamented that the country is plagued by incessant killings, insecurity, ethnic crisis, kidnappings, poverty, unemployment and unstable economy and political affairs, and all these endangers the lives of corps members.

The roads condition and transport infrastructure they also highlighted were in bad shape as the rate of accidents involving corps members and other citizens keep rising.Though they affirmed that the scheme introduced in May 1973 by the then military government of General Yakubu Gowon, has laudable objectives, the political and socio-economic instability, coupled with incessant killings in the country is slowly killing those objectives.

Undergraduates are no longer excited being enrolled in the scheme, as majority sees it as a ritual which must be performed rather than a dedicated and selfless service.According to a 400-level student of Lagos State University (LASU), “I don’t really desire to be enrolled in NYSC. It is more of a tradition to me now than a service. The plight of corps members and unjust killing of corps members in their various places of primary assignment has rendered the scheme irrelevant. It has outlived its intent and purpose. Our country was not like this when it was introduced. Now that Nigeria is undergoing security challenges amidst other crisis, it is expected that the scheme should be reviewed. They should stop wasting innocent lives all in the name of rendering a service to the fatherland.”

For a 400-level Electrical Engineering student of University of Lagos (UNILAG), “I am not looking forward to it, it has more demerits than merits. I mean spending a whole year with a scheme that has so much structural deficiencies is a waste of time. A lot of these corps members are under utilised. Graduates with first class will be in one rural community to rot away.

“The spate of killings and insecurity in the land, has overpowered the objectives of the founding fathers as people are no longer free to move around. The issue of unemployment is also rising. How many of these corps members get or create job after service? How many were retained in their places of primary assignments? From the people around me that have served, there is nothing significant about NYSC. It is just a waste of time,” he said.

An HND 11, student of Yaba College of Technology (YabaTech), said she is not interested as a lot of misfortune befalls corps members during their service year. She said, “Where do I start? Is it the N19,800 allowance in the midst of high cost of living, or the poor road condition or the unjust posting without considering the level of security in such communities. Or the accommodation crisis my brother suffered during his time. NYSC has outlived its purpose, it is either they review it and allow us to choose the state where we want to serve or they should scrap the scheme.

“Before now, seeing corps members dressed in khaki and jungle boots made me anticipating for it, but with the present state of the nation, I have lost interest. Also the experience of my elder brother who served in Sokoto, made me understand that NYSC is more than just wearing khaki and jungle boot.

Another student of the school said, “I love adventure, and I would have loved to be posted to any faraway state, but the road infrastructure and the killings, coupled with communal clashes have flattened those wishes. In sincerity, Nigerian youths are no longer desirable of the scheme. If it is optional, I tell you a lot of people will opt out.”

But 300 level student of UNILAG, Adelakun Tobiloba, is more concerned about increasing the monthly allowance. “They should increase the allowance as the present stipend doesn’t worth the stress. You can imagine being posted in one rural community where their living standard is too poor, and you will go and join them. As a graduate, you are meant to advance and start impacting lives not living like a pauper in one local community all in the name of serving your fatherland. The scheme should be urgently reviewed.

For Franklin John, another student of UNILAG, “Government should consider environment before posting innocent corps members to community where their safety is not guaranteed. I am still in 200-level, but I am scared and I’m not interested. Is like starting life afresh, settling where you don’t even know if you are welcomed and managing life with a meagre N19,800.”A Law student of UNILAG also, said government should seek another integration policy, as NYSC has outlived its purpose.

He said, “It needs to be restructured. It is something interesting that every young person should look forward to. But the situation in the country has dampened one’s spirit. Apart from issue of safety and poor stipend, the scheme itself is not maximising the potentials of graduates enrolled in it.

“Most of the have redundant year. It is not enrolling that is the issue but what they do within that one year is more important, posting promising graduates with great potentials in rural villages or primary school shows that something is wrong with the process of posting. They should work with our records, qualifications and discipline so that the nation will indeed benefit from our service, if not you will have a redundant year. The prospect is big for the country; they even use corps members as electoral officers. So it should be restructured and the managers of the scheme should be pragmatic about it.
