As the Air Peace aircraft that brought the first batch of 188 Nigerian returnees from South Africa, landed at the tarmac of the Muritala Mohammed International Airport , Lagos, Wednesday night, the returnees were welcomed into the warmth arms of some government officials and relatives, amidst different expressions on their faces. Six hundred others who willingly decided to return home, in order to escape the xenophobic attacks in South Africa, are still awaiting their turn to board the next available flight. But with a record of over 30,000 Nigerians living in South Africa, one would have expected the number of returnees to be more that 688. Investigation by Saturday Vanguard on why the number of voluntary returnees is low, showed that most Nigerians are still weighing the option. Meanwhile, back in South Africa, foreign nationals among who are Nigerians, are still locked indoors for fear of further attacks, with their work places still a shadow of what they used to be. In a telephone conversation with some of them in different provinces, they blamed the economic condition back home in Nigeria, as the major reason they are reluctant to return. One of them, Ferdnard Ikechukwu , who was asked why he did not use the opportunity of the free flight back to Nigeria, said, “ Come to Nigeria to do what? Is the situation there better than what we have here? Are Boko Haram not killing people at will? Are there no militia groups who take laws into their hands and waste innocent lives in Nigeria? What about all the killings back home by bandits, herdsmen kidnappers? What has the government done to address them? “ Besides, will government give me job? Will I return and fold my hands watching my aged parents feed me , my wife and children? I will rather remain here and pray for God’s protection”. Electricity Another Nigerian, Osasoyen Idemia, said “ Government is saying we should come home when there are no plans on ground for us. If the Nigerian government will address the issue of electricity, about 75% of Nigerians in South Africa will return home because our work needs unhindered electricity supply. If there is constant electricity supply in Nigeria, Nigerians who have invested here in South Africa will return home. This is an essential need government must address”. On his part, Mr Uche Ozioma, said, “ It is not as if I do not want to return home. But I have already established a business here. I have been here for 20 years and I have branches in seven provinces. I have four children, all graduates. Two of them are married to South Africans. I go home (Nigeria ) every December to spend Christmas with my parents and relatives. Tell me, if I leave here, where would I start from ?” Another Nigerian Edome Asemota , said, “ I can’t leave because there is no hope for me back home. I came into South Africa, three years ago, having spent five years in Nigeria without a job. I did all kinds of menial jobs to eke a living, while in Nigeria, yet , I could not rent one-room apartment. Besides, pressure was on me to get married because I am an only child. “My course mate back in the university invited me to South Africa three years ago. I started as a sales boy in a car mart in Malvern , a suburb of Johannesburg. I also help people wash cars. At least I could save reasonable amount. The only problem here is the xenophobic attacks. My prayer is that God will spare my life”. Cause of attacks Also, an auto parts dealer, who simply gave his name as Dino, attributed the cause of the attacks on Nigerians and nationals from other African countries to what he described as lackadaisical attitude of the South African Government to checkmate excesses of the perpetrators of the attacks. Dino said, “ The attacks are perpetrated by youths who live in hostels. These hostels are in Hillbrow, Malvern, Orlando and almost all the provinces. They are homes provided by government to jobless people. Aside this, they are paid monthly. “Those living in the homes are being used by some government officials to distort the country. They target foreign nationals because that is the only way to gain international attention. They launch attack any time they want money from government. By the time they get the money, the whole place will be calm. “ There has been call to scrap these hostels and give these people jobs. But they are not ready to work because they are used to getting free money. Claims that South African women go after men from other countries and abandon their men is not false. Their women accuse their men of not spending much on them as men from other countries do. “ At the moment , everyone is indoors. Fortunately, the ongoing crisis is not only affecting Nigerians and other foreign nationals. It is also affecting South Africans because some of them owned the burnt shops we rented for our businesses. Also some buildings that were destroyed are owned by South Africans. For instance, I have three South Africans as employees. Like me, they have not reported to work since last Monday’s attack. The solution is not in Nigerians or other African countries nationals leaving South Africa. It is left in the hands of the South African government to address activities of these hostel boys”. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/09/xenophobic-rage-why-we-dont-want-to-return-home/ |

Nigerian 17-Year-Old Nnamdi Ozoemena Emerges Second Best In 2019 Commonwealth Essay Competition A 17-year-old Nigerian student, Nnamdi Ozoemena, has emerged the runner-up in the senior category of the 2019 Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition. Blackson Bayewumi, Country Director of the Royal Commonwealth Society in Nigeria and Chairman Nigeria Conversation, said this in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday. Bayewumi said that the Federal Ministry of Education had on March 11, inaugurated the competition in Abuja on behalf of the Royal Commonwealth Society (RCS) Nigeria during the commemoration of the Commonwealth Day. According to him, the Royal Commonwealth Society in Nigeria inaugurated the Essay Competition in Lagos on Feb. 20, 2019, and that the competition was held all over the 53 member countries of the Commonwealth. “Ozoemena emerged runner-up courtesy of her literary piece chosen from more than 11,000 entries from across the five regions of the Commonwealth. “She wrote about 'Hello' a tale of two young people struggling with issues in their society and who do not feel truly appreciated for whom they are told through direct messages on Twitter. “From different countries, backgrounds they find common ground and become friends; the One Final Panel Judge described the piece as ‘shop window of how youth are speaking to each other today’. “Ozoemena will be invited to attend an awards ceremony at Buckingham Palace where the Duchess of Cornwall will present them with their certificates on behalf of Her Majesty the Queen,” he said. Bayewumi said Ozoemena came behind 15-year-old Canadian, Beached Wang, in the senior category. He added that Veronica Shen, 13, from Singapore emerged winner in the junior category while 12-year-old Ghanaian, Elise Jensen, emerged runner-up. He, however, said that the senior category was for people between the ages of 14 years and 18 years, while the junior category was for those who were 13 years old and below. Bayewumi said that notable authors would read extracts from the winning pieces at the ceremony as part of a week of cultural and educational activities in London, UK. He explained that the 2019 competition titled “Connected Commonwealth” required applications on how the contestants could use cultural, technological, and environmental connections for positive change across the Commonwealth. Topics for the competition provided room for young people to write on ways that Commonwealth potentials could be used to strengthen the vast and varied links between citizens. “It is important to conclude that Nigerian young people have the competence, capacities, capabilities, and intelligence to compete globally and excel if given the opportunity and the right environment. “While few Nigerian youths indulge themselves in crime, there are millions of others making the nation proud in academics, sports, science and technology, entertainment, and other dignifying human endeavours,” he said. He said that a Pan-Commonwealth body consisting of more than 100 volunteer judges across 40 different countries assessed the entries for the competition. Bayewumi also said that the judges commented on the skill and talent shown by any of the young writers, with entries described as ‘massively memorable’ and ‘very powerful’. The competition is the oldest international schools’ writing competition organised by the Royal Commonwealth Society founded in 1868, as a network of individuals and organizations to improve prospects of Commonwealth citizens across the world. The society seeks to promote Commonwealth societal values through youth empowerment, education, and advocacy, News Agency of Nigeria reports. http://saharareporters.com/2019/09/12/nigerian-17-year-old-nnamdi-ozoemena-emerges-second-best-2019-commonwealth-essay?fbclid=IwAR0yCxAhibeyGqOD0kiOmClxPLu_bs1wpdvNzP67gNE3ETdHBGY71eDFj6Q |
I was sodomised by multiple inmates, says chef They said they will teach me a lesson for being gay. I told them I was not but they did not listen. The first night I was taken to prison, three of the inmates took turns to rape me. “I begged them but they refused to leave me. They beat me up with different sticks, injured me and kept making mockery of me. “Even the officers at Badagry prison were I was locked up for over two months kept calling me gay. I want justice. I feel wounded and very hurt. I have lost my self-esteem, suffered isolation and depression. I am even afraid of what tomorrow holds.” Those were the words of 24-year-old Ayomide Idowu, a Lagos chef, a victim of Nigeria’s dysfunctional criminal justice system. Idowu’s travails began on June 10 when he was arrested by policemen attached to Olodi-Apapa Division while he was returning home from rendering his service as a chef at a private party. It was around 11pm and he was in a commercial bus with about 20 others when the policemen stopped the bus and bundled all of them to the station. Idowu told The Nation that he had showed the cops his identity card but they threw it away, and insisted all of them must get to the police station. “At the station, they said each person should bring N20,000 for their bail. I told them I have only N5,000. They said I should call my family members to bring the money or they will take me to prison for being gay but I told I didn’t have any family member in Lagos. “I honestly did not have the money and so I resigned to fate since I knew I have committed no crime. Those who could paid and were released. We were kept at the police station for three days before they took me to the Mobile Court in Alausa. “I was not wearing female clothing. I was properly dressed as a man and I am not gay. I have never been gay. I think the problem is that I have a feminine outlook. “At the Court in Alausa, I pleaded not guilty but I was taken to Badagry Prison where I stayed until August 20 when I was discharged and acquitted after an activist took up my case,” Idowu told The Nation yesterday. According to him, the ugly experience he had in prison has marred him and he was constantly battling with himself to regain his confidence. Asked if he could name any of the inmates who allegedly raped him, Idowu said he never bothered to find out what their names were, adding that he kept to himself almost all through his stay in prison because he was a laughing stock there. “The pain was just too much. Two of them were later granted bail and released but one was still in Custody when I was freed. I was never interested in becoming friends and I did not report it out of fear. “I am sharing my story now so that young people can learn. Once you go somewhere and it is late, just remain where you are. Do not bother going home so that you do not have the kind of experience I went through. “Nobody knew I was in prison. My friend I was squatting with said he was trying my number and could not get me. It was after my release that I shared my experience with him.” “The court discharged and acquitted me because there was no evidence from the police. It is very painful for a struggling young man like me to have gone through such an experience. I could not even move about freely inside prison because everyone including the warders would call me gay. “It still hurts narrating the experience. I cannot even say everything. I feel so bad each day.” https://thenationonlineng.net/i-was-sodomised-by-multiple-inmates-says-chef/ |
he Edo State Election Petition Tribunal has upheld the election of Senator Francis Alemikhena of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the Edo North Senatorial District election in Edo State. Abubakar Momoh of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had approached the court to declare him winner of the election on the grounds that Alimikhena did not score majority of lawful votes, over voting and that Alimikhena was not qualified to contest the election as he did not have the requisite qualification. He alleged that the election was fraught with irregularities and non-compliances with Electoral Act and therefore should be declared winner. The tribunal, in its ruling read by Justice S. M. Kibo, held that the petitioner did not prove his petition beyond reasonable doubt and therefore dismissed the petition for lack of merit. The tribunal, however, dismissed all the grounds of the petition as well as reliefs sought by the petitioner. In another judgment, the tribunal threw out the petition filed by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Esan West/Esan Central and Igueben Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Mr. Patrick Idiake, for lack of merit. Hon Joe Edionwele was declared winner of the election after which Idiake approached the tribunal to declare him winner since, according to him, the election did not hold in Unit Nine, Ward Nine of Esan West local government area and that the election of Edionwele was invalid by reason of non-compliance with the Electoral Act. But, the three-man tribunal in a unanimous judgment, said the petitioners did not prove allegations of corrupt practices beyond reasonable doubts. The tribunal averred that the evidences of the witnesses called by the petitioners were not credible and could not substantiate their claims. The tribunal upheld that there were indications that the witnesses called by the petitioners were tutored and gave no details of action incidences. https://www.independent.ng/tribunal-affirms-alimikhenas-election-throws-out-idiakes-petition-2/?utm_source=&utm_medium=facebook |

Governor Wike Suspends Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board Despite Claim Rivers Is Christian State The Vice President-General of Jamaatu Nasril Islam, (JNI), Alhaji Abubakar Orlu, has explained why Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, suspended the state's Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board. Alhaji Orlu said it was because of alleged fraudulent activities and the unsatisfactory manner the board was being run. In a statement issued on Saturday, the JNI chieftain disclosed that some fraudulent persons had in the past hijacked hajj seats in Rivers State to other states. Last July, Wike had claimed that Rivers was a Christian state. “I heard that some people are angry that I declared Rivers as a Christian State. With what happened on March 9, 2019, it re-emphasized my conviction that Rivers is a Christian State. Nobody can intimidate me into changing my position. “I will not disappoint the Church. I will continue to support the Church. When people who think that they are God came, Christians stood firm and showed that Rivers State is a Christian State,” the governor had asserted at a thanksgiving. http://saharareporters.com/2019/09/08/governor-wike-suspends-muslim-pilgrims-welfare-board-despite-claim-rivers-christian-state?fbclid=IwAR1R34gKiL0g4SeTTvtyafrdL20fSlZSE4JWG5b6il-ajgF3SFCVaEJxJ2E |
'Yoruba, unlike Igbo, Hausa, are too sophisticated to have one socio-political group' Secretary of the Yoruba Council of Elders, YCE, Dr. Kunle Olajide, in this interview, speaks on the implications of the purported election of Prof. Banji Akintoye as the leader of the Yoruba. The election of Professor Banji Akintoye as the leader of the Yoruba is generating controversy across the South-West. What do you think is responsible? The Yoruba race is about a hundred and fifty million people, scattered across the globe and they are very hospitable, very enterprising, very liberal and very accommodating. They don’t want to be cheated and don’t believe in cheating others. When you talk about the leadership of such people, a lot of factors must be taken into consideration. Are you talking about leadership in the political arena, religious arena, business arena, or in academia? We just have to be clear. If we are talking about overall leadership, one has to be extremely careful, because we are in a constitutional democracy now, where there is freedom of choice, freedom of association and freedom of speech. In other words, only political leaders are elected through properly conducted elections. And Nigerians above the age of 18 who have the right to vote can vote. But if we are talking about Yoruba leadership, people can sit down to choose their leader and you can’t fault their choice because there is freedom of choice under the constitution. Would the Yoruba accept the leadership? Whether the leadership would be accepted by the majority of the Yoruba is another question. We heard about an election conducted by some groups from the Yoruba race recently and for such groups, they have the right to choose a leader. Their choice is a very well respected Yoruba leader. We respect him, and we adore him. He is quite competent and has the necessary credentials to be the leader. But you begin to worry about the process and the motive of those who gathered. Even the leader that was chosen was not at that meeting where he was chosen. Again, one begins to wonder whether they have his consent to choose him. Does he support it? Is he part of it? Therefore the process that should produce Yoruba leadership must as much as possible be all-encompassing. I am talking about carrying our foremost traditional rulers along. Their consent must be sought. The Ooni of Ife, Alaafin of Oyo, Owa of Ijesha land, Ewi of Ado Ekiti, Olowo of Owo, Olukare of Ikare, Awujale of Ijebuland, Eleko of Lagos and host of others. The task is for the Yoruba and our leaders must have known over the years those, who have paid their dues in the service of the Yoruba nation. When you hear that a few young men sat down somewhere and claimed to have chosen a leader for the Yoruba race, one begins to wonder how much they know about Yoruba race. We are gifted as I said earlier. Yoruba nation is endowed, even in the religious arena, our people are prominent. A few of us don’t understand the situation because we have not even heard a word from the elected leader, who happened to be one of my leaders. He is somebody I know and have respect for. He hasn’t said a word whether he is accepting the responsibility or not. I think the ele Would you say that the action of these people is a deliberate attempt to cause a crisis in the Yoruba nation? It is difficult for me to pass that kind of judgement because we are yet to know those behind it and in any case, it is over a week now and the supposed leader is yet to talk to us on whether he is accepting the position or declining. He has not even said that he is commencing a process of regularising the irregularities. I don’t know the agenda behind it. Some people have come out to say that action is connected to the 2023 presidential ambition of some leaders. Do you share that opinion? It is not unlikely but I’m not a mind reader. I cannot read the mind of those behind it. And talking about 2023, I think the prayers of every reasonable human being now should be to even survive this 2019 because we are yet to see the end of 2019. As I am talking to you there would be some of us who may not be fortunate to see 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023. And people are talking about 2023. It was said that two names were presented at the election. Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Professor Banji Akintoye were listed and Akintoye was said to have emerged. Don’t you think the election was an attempt to instigate a rift between the two leaders? I am not too sure whether the two people mentioned were aware of the meeting. I think it is immoral for anybody to present names of people without seeking their consent whether they want to contest for the office or not in the first place. That is immoral. The Yoruba have developed far beyond that. You can’t just pick two names and say one scored two million, the other scored five million. They didn’t seek their consent. For me, it will be wrong to begin judging the situation from what we read in the papers. Let the actors speak. None of them has spoken. Let us wait for them to speak. People are beginning to think this would cause crisis among other leaders of the Yorubaland? I think the Yoruba are much sophisticated and developed. You can see beyond such puerile trick. We are very much developed and much sophisticated. Many challenges are facing us now. We have a lot to do than to be talking about leaders who are not recognised by the constitution. In the Yoruba race now we have the Afenifere led by Pa Fasoranti and another lead by Pa Fasanmi. There is also the Afenifere Renewal Group and the Yoruba Council of Elders. It is a sign of our sophistication. We are in a free world. For instance, when a group forms a socio-cultural Yoruba group, nobody would fight the group. But when they want to choose a leader they must make wide consultation in a sophisticated nation like the Yoruba nation. Traditional rulers are very important if not the most important. You must talk with them and seek their consent because they are the representative of gods on earth. The academia and other Yoruba groups should also be carried along in choosing who leads the Yoruba. Don’t you think it is high time the Yoruba formed a group like the Area Consultative Forum? No! Don’t make such mistake by calling Arewa consultative Forum a strong umbrella group. We can’t have such a thing in the Yoruba nation. What about Ndigbo? Ndigbo don’t have a well-structured organisation. At the time we had our first medical doctor there was none in these two parts of the country you are talking about. When Bishop Ajayi Crowther came to Nigeria none of these two parts of the world had anything to do with education. The Yoruba nation is different. We can interact, have a common agenda and work together for the good of Yoruba nation but we are too sophisticated to be restricted to a single socio-cultural organisation. You must work to earn your leadership position in Yoruba land. It is not just given to anyone who has served the race creditably. Are you not worried about the possible implications of this issue? I am not worried because Professor Banji Akintoye, a knowledgeable Professor of History, is a respected Yoruba leader. He is a politician of note. He was a senator in the Second Republic He is the Chairman and Founder of Oodua Foundation worldwide. He is one of my foremost leaders. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2019/09/yoruba-unlike-igbo-hausa-are-too-sophisticated-to-have-one-socio-political-group/ |

IPOB: Kanu invited to address European parliament Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been invited to the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, to address the issue of IPOB agitation for Biafra freedom. The meeting is scheduled for European Parliament Building, Brussels, Belgium on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 between 4 and 6pm EST. The invitation was confirmed by Kanu on his Facebook page where he wrote “I have graciously accepted the invitation of a few members of the European Parliament to address the burning issue of IPOB agitation and what a NEW BIAFRA means for Africa. I look forward to leading hardcore IPOB family members in Europe to this historic encounter.” Meanwhile, the pro- Biafra group yesterday declared that the battle line is now drawn between them and the South-East Governors, challenging the state executives to set foot abroad or appear in public anywhere outside Nigeria. Responding to the statement by the Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum and Governor Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi that the Governors would not apologize to IPOB and that he would personally inform the group whenever he would be travelling abroad, the group warned that it is fully ready to battle the governors. IPOB had earlier said that the only way it would forgive the governors was if they apologise to the group for their alleged complicity in the proscription of IPOB and the launching of Operation Python Dance by the Nigerian Army in the Southeast. The group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful told Saturday Sun yesterday that the group was aware of the alleged weakness of the governors and their avowed loyalty to “their Northern masters,” assuring that any attempt by any of them to visit abroad would be met the wrath of IPOB. He said, “We are waiting for them to set foot abroad or appear in public anywhere outside Nigeria then they will know how upset we are. We remain conscious of the complicity and duplicity of South-East Governors in the whole Operation Python Dance debacle and will hold them accountable at the right time. We are aware of their secret dealings with this Government of Nigeria to enslave our people, a task we assure them can never be accomplished as long as IPOB exists.” He stressed that but for IPOB, Ebonyi and Enugu state would have been taken over by herdsmen, adding that the group would leave no stone unturned in restoring the dignity of the Igbo. “It is demeaning for IPOB to be exchanging words with slaves and traitors working for an external enemy. Enugu and Ebonyi would have fallen to the Fulani if not for IPOB. South-East Governors are weak, wretched and incapable of standing up to their caliphate masters. Only IPOB can restore the dignity and lost honour of our people.” Stressing that IPOB was no longer interested in any apology from the governors, Powerful said, “Following the recent denial and subsequent refusal of South-East Governors to apologize or do the needful towards IPOB against a background of their incessant attacks, abduction, arrest, killings and proscription of unarmed peaceful Biafrans; before, during and after Operation Python Dance II in 2017, we the global family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) categorically state that we are not interested in any apology coming from those who have continued to shamelessly preside over the Fulanisation of their ancestral lands. “They are weak and pathetic men who have sworn loyalty to their Fulani masters. These traitors and saboteurs are not leaders but instruments of Fulani incursion and agents of the age-old Fulani agenda. Unfortunately most people are yet to understand the danger these people portend for our existence as a race. “A few days ago the residence of Dave Umahi was raided in Abuja by the same Fulani caliphate he is so slavishly serving for merely mouthing that movement of Fulani terror herdsmen will no longer be tolerated. “That will teach him and others like him that treachery against one’s own people never pays. For reading out an innocuous communiqué, he was targeted like a common criminal. Few days afterwards he was seen shamefully bowing down before the Nigerian President like a naughty schoolboy in front of a headmaster.” |
Reviewing The Nigerian Civil War and its Effect on Contemporary Nigeria By Reno Omokri Till today, I don't understand the rationale behind the Nigerian Civil War. If the East had taken a chunk of the Midwest or West or those parts of the North having consanguinity with the Igbos, the war might have been justifiable. The Eastern Region decided to pull out of Nigeria. They were not consulted before the British put this forced marriage together. They decided to leave after back and forth killings. There was no reason on Earth that could justify that war. They were not like Germany that took other people's territory. Even today, the mainstream of Northern Nigeria (The Fulani intelligentsia) do not even pretend to like the Southeast. What was it that made them decide to fight that war to keep Nigeria one? Look at General Buhari. Even a fool knows he believes in North, not Nigeria. There has never been a more unjust war than the Nigerian Civil War. And to the spiritually minded man, most of the problems Nigeria is having today is as a result of our paying the price for the innocent blood shed between 1967-70. If I was Ojukwu, and I was faced with the same options he faced in 1967, I would also have opted for secession. I may not have done it in May. I would have tried to get international backing. But I would have still seceded. The Nigerian Civil War was not fought because the Fulani intelligentsia loved the Igbo. I put it to Nigeria that if oil had been in the North rather than the East, there would have been NO WAR. That war should be called the Nigerian Oil War, not the Nigerian Civil War. Gowon was just a mere pawn. An inoffensive man that was sent packing when he outlived his usefulness to his masters. Look at his Plateau people. The way they are being killed and wasted is sad. The once strong Langtang Mafia has been castrated. I was a strong believer in Nigerian unity until the 2002 Sharia crisis. The comments of General Buhari fed the crisis and led to bloodshed. And Nigeria elected that man in 2015. It is like a church giving her pastorate to satan. Nigeria exists ONLY because of oil. Our unity is not LOVE based. It is OIL based. I saw that during AFCON 2013. Some Nigerians rooted for another country because they felt the Super Eagles were dominated by Easterners. The mentality that led to the civil war is still alive. The population of Nigeria will continue to outgrow GDP. There will be an implosion. It is only a matter of time if we don’t restructure and I do not see the North agreeing to restructuring. Nigeria is a bad marriage no one wants but every one is too cowardly to say it. Why Do Nigerian politicians like to pretend? So if you say the truth then you will not win election or they won't appoint you as a minister? Look at how General Buhari has destroyed Nigeria. If we don't talk now, we will not be any better than those who do. To know how Nigeria has deteriorated since the civil war, consider that in 1967, our federal budget was comparable to the budget of New York State. Today, our budget is comparable to just the combined budget of the New York Police Department and New York Fire Dept. My dear fellow citizens, look, let us start to tell ourselves some home truths. The last time Nigeria worked as it should work was in 1966. Ever since then, we have just been managing. People like Obasanjo tried to stabilise us. People like Buhari neutralised his good work Until we go back and undo the historic injustice done to the Igbo and then fully bring them back to the mainstream and restructure Nigeria back to what we agreed with the British before independence, incompetents like Buhari will continue to thwart our progress. Controversial Julius Malema blames white people for xenophobic attacks perpetrated by blacks Controversial South African politician and President of the Economic Freedom Fighters, Julius Malema , has blamed white South Africans for the xenophobic attacks perpetrated by black South Africans. Mr Malema has always argued that although South Africa is now politically independent, the economy remains in the hands of few white people. True independence, he has said, would mean economic freedom from white domination. Addressing newsmen on Thursday in South Africa, Malema said his party would not be part of criminal protests, adding that he would not support such acts as they are likely going to lead to South Africans turning on each other. “… when you are done with Nigerians, when you are done with Mozambicans and Zimbabweans and Zambians, you are going to go for Shangaans from Giyani, I have to stop you now before you come to me,” said Malema, according to local newspapers. He said allegations that foreigners were stealing jobs from locals were misinformed and blamed whites for creating animosity among black people, an act that led to the unrests. “There is no one who takes a job from South Africans, no one. They [foreigners] are being offered jobs, they don’t take [them]. The owners of means of production are white people. When you say private sector, it’s a polite way of saying white people,” said Malema. “There is no government that employs foreign nationals, it is the private sector, simply put it is white people who prefer foreign nationals over South Africans and after employing foreign nationals they come to you and say, ‘don’t you think these borders are being let loose? It has led to foreigners taking jobs and as a result South Africans don’t have jobs’, that’s what they say.” He said white people employ foreign nationals at their restaurants, farms, retail and hospitality sectors as a way of planting self-hate among black people. “… and because we’re unemployed, and because we’ve got government with no solutions to crisis of poverty and widening gap between the rich and the poor, we begin to start believing like that,” he said. “So the private sector, the white monopoly capital, must take full responsibility for this mess we are faced with.” Malema said job-creation must first prioritize people living in that specific area before looking externally, adding that this is one way of averting violence and attacks. South Africans, especially around Gauteng, have been on the rampage attacking foreign nationals and looting their shops. This has angered countries whose nationals have been on the receiving end. Malema has cautioned EFF members against taking part in the xenophobic attacks, which he says are total madness. “Anyone with an EFF T-shirt must play very far from that madness. We’re not part of madness, we’re part of the solutions to the madness confronting our people on the ground.” https://todaynewsafrica.com/controversial-julius-malema-blames-white-people-for-xenophobic-attacks-perpetrated-by-blacks/?fbclid=IwAR1DpFneplVDD_LpxC2dQvYnZkGiS0tPl0CsA0Iy0yHm30JetzABOODX6Ao |
123 Jigawa cyclists of no value to Lagos – Assembly Lagos State House of Assembly has expressed displeasure at the release of the 123 cyclists recently arrested by security agencies. Sanai Agunbiade representing Ikorodu 1 raised this under matter of urgent public importance. In his submission, Sanai said nobody knew the intention of those who came in with motorcycles from their town, saying their invasion was a threat to the security of Lagos State and expressed the need to ‘take a look on the northerners who sneak in the night.’ The lawmakers took turns to condemn the influx of trucks carrying young men from the North and their motorcycles into the state and called on the Commissioner of Police to ensure adequate security of lives and properties. The House also called on the National Assembly to review the constitution in order to accommodate state police and also reiterated the need for a special status for the state. Tunde Braimoh representing Kosofe 2, tasked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to enhance traffic laws to caution the people who want to act contrary to the law. In his view, Fatai Mojeed representing Ibeju Lekki 1 said there was a need to involve Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) to commence the inspection of motorcycles that were not registered. Abiodun Tobun said that the 123 northerners arrested and released should have been sent back with their motorcycles, saying their release was not good enough. “They are here to constitute nuisance because they have no value to add to the development of the state,” he said. The Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who supported his colleagues, added that the budget of the state was no longer enough to cater to the people. “The law that permits movement of people also gives power to the state to direct its affairs. Those who come in must abide by the rules and regulations. The Commissioner of Police shouldn’t have handled over the 123 people to immigration for proper identification before their release. “This is the more reason why Lagos needs special status with state police to secure lives of the people,” he said. The House then charged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to empower the neighbourhood safety corps to ensure security in the state. https://www.sunnewsonline.com/123-jigawa-cyclists-of-no-value-to-lagos-assembly/ |

J’oburg no longer safe for Nigerians, attackers are well organised –President, Nigerian Union, S’Africa President , Nigerian Union South Africa , Adetola Olubajo , speaks on the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians living in South Africa in this interview with TOBI AWORINDE What culminated into the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa ? We are still compiling that list. There are about eight of them that have come forward , but we are still compiling that list. A lot of them are traumatised already and it is when they come forward that we will know . For some of our people that have moved and are living around Jules Street in Malvern , even in Jeppestown, it is very risky for them to move around because the situation is very tense as we speak . Has the Nigerian Mission been supportive enough ? They are aware of what is happening ; so , we expect them to do their job . But their core function is to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians , so they need to come out in the field and give support to Nigerians . Last Monday , there was a fight between some foreigners suspected to be Tanzanians and taxi drivers which led to the death of one taxi driver . So , on Tuesday , the taxi drivers went on a mass protest in the morning and it degenerated into violence. Some criminal elements joined them and they started looting and burning houses , business and shops belonging to foreign nationals in the Pretoria Central Business District on Lilian Ngoyi Street . The police were able to contain the situation but it spread to other parts and that is what we are still battling with till now . Was there any loss of lives or people injured in the attacks ? We cannot quantify or ascertain how many have been injured for now. But according to the information at our disposal , only three people have been killed and they were killed during the fire that broke out yesterday ( Sunday ) morning in Jeppestown, Johannesburg. Their identities have not been revealed by the police and many people were injured but we cannot say, ‘ this is the number of people that have been injured . ” Are the nationalities of the deceased known ? No . But is there a probability that they were Nigerians? No , I don ’ t think so . If they were Nigerians , we would have got that information . We have some presence of our union in the Johannesburg area ; so I don ’ t think there is any strong probability that they would have been Nigerians because , if they were Nigerians , we would have got information about them. How endangered are Nigerians living in that area at the moment ? They are not safe ; no Nigerian is safe in that area , especially in the Johannesburg environs because these groups of attackers are very coordinated and organised . So , what they do is to target a particular area where foreign nationals are densely populated and not only Nigerians are targets ; they target all foreign nationals . In that quest to attack foreign nationals ’ businesses , loot them and burn them, some South Africans also are caught in the firing line because there were some South African businesses that were also looted mistakenly ; they were mistaken to be those of foreigners . So , the aim is to attack the foreign- owned businesses . A lot of Nigerian businesses , like the car dealer ’ s shops and internet cafés , are counting their losses ; they were looted and burnt down . Can you give the value of property lost ? It is in millions . Yes , because when you talk about a car dealer that has lots of cars in its garage, computer accessory business, those buying and selling wholesale stock , it’ s in millions . There is no way it will not run into millions of rand . Do you know how many Nigerian business owners were affected ? We are still compiling that list. There are about eight of them that have come forward , but we are still compiling that list. A lot of them are traumatised already and it is when they come forward that we will know . For some of our people that have moved and are living around Jules Street in Malvern , even in Jeppestown, it is very risky for them to move around because the situation is very tense as we speak . Has the Nigerian Mission been supportive enough ? They are aware of what is happening ; so , we expect them to do their job . But their core function is to protect the lives and properties of Nigerians , so they need to come out in the field and give support to Nigerians . But would you say the Nigerian Mission has given adequate support in the past? In the past, it has been media statements and rhetoric that something will be done . Whatever things that are being done by them, if there is no positive result , we would say something different needs to be done . We believe that if they are giving adequate reports to the government and giving correct advice on how to use some diplomatic instruments to solve this problem , this attack would have gone down . So , we implore them to do more. Whatever they are doing is not working , so they need to do more. The Minister of Foreign Affairs , Geoffrey Onyeama, during his ministerial screening suggested that a hotline should be set up to shorten the response time of Nigerian missions . Do you think that could solve the problem of the xenophobic attacks against Nigerians? That is a welcome idea because that will enable the foreign affairs to get direct information from the victims , so the people that encounter the ordeal can narrate their stories directly to the ministry . But they need to do more; there are so many diplomatic instruments available that they can use to push the South African government so that they will be able to take decisive steps to stop these incessant and outrageous attacks on foreign nationals . The long- years , hard - earned investments of people are being destroyed in minutes . Some people have been building their business for years — some of them, 10 years , and others, more than that — and they are just destroyed within a space of 30 minutes to an hour . It is making life difficult for our people, so we are calling on the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , to step up and put some pressures here and there. There should be serious engagement in finding lasting solutions to these outrageous attacks and looting . Our government representatives in South Africa should also not be seen to be reactive; they should be proactive . There is so much intelligence that is available. Sometimes , we ignore the information and signals , so when they come , we start running helter - skelter , which is not correct . They need to be proactive in terms of solving the problems of our community members. A lot of nerves are frayed due to the losses incurred . How should Nigerians handle the conflict so that it will not escalate ? First of all, every Nigerian in South Africa — those who have businesses , those who are not affected and those who are — should always be mindful and vigilant of their safety. It is very important. We cannot say that South Africa is safe for anybody now because the attack is not being done in one place. It is spreading minute by minute , hour by hour , to different parts . So , we would implore our people that are at home to , please , use any means available to them to reach our government at the highest level to engage their counterparts, so that they can stop these unnecessary and senseless attacks on our people. Those who are there also need to be good ambassadors . We should not give them (South Africans ) reasons to attack us and we need to cooperate with the South African police to be able to root out crime from our community. Whoever commits a crime , whether South Africans , Nigerians or non - citizens , they should face the full wrath of the law . There should be deterrent for every action that is not within the law . Then , this issue of attacks and killings can actually be reduced . Those who are attacking are on the premise of trying to solve crimes ; it is unacceptable and senseless because you cannot use crime to solve crime . How do you say you are solving crimes , then you are looting and burning people ’ s businesses ? The people whose businesses you are looting are not drug dealers . The drug dealers have gone into hiding; you cannot then go on the rampage and start looting people’ s things . Crime cannot be used to solve crime . We should all work together as Africans to root out criminal activities in our various communities . https://punchng.com/joburg-no-longer-safe-for-nigerians-attackers-are-well-organised-president-nigerian-union-safrica/?fbclid=IwAR3fgIYbpOAAjgDnJ7NQt-0EwYNvrGMAVA5Of6Sb-ozSnzFa5ZwZQPzOviE |

Galadima reacted to questions bothering on protest marches an example of which is the #RevolutionNow movement Omoleye Sowere and the attack on former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu in Germany, Vanguard reports. He said that these are features of democracy adding that Nigerian leaders should do their utmost to see to the welfare of those they are leading because it will be a day for reckoning and accountability soon. Galadima said: "I can tell you that these attacks on leaders are part of democracy. If somebody believes in himself, he has nothing to fear and would freely travel out to any country even if you are killed for what you believe. "What I’m driving at is that our leaders should do better than they are doing or else, the law of Karma will catch up with them within or outside the shores of Nigeria. "I’m not supporting anything. What I’m saying is that the leaders should be very careful about their behaviour while in office because the people are beginning to demand accountability from them." https://www.legit.ng/1257437-buba-galadima-attacks-leaders-features-democracy.html?fbclid=IwAR0MAtlQzzCUZ3QHvSzBhTmTFQ6A97foRW-YGNvu4QzS1cdMkuy2JoT7RQY |

Oshiomhole Powerless, Empty, Only Has The Title Of ‘National Chairman’ -Tanko Yakassai Kaduna – Worried by the lack of respect accorded to leaders of various political parties in the country, the vocal elder statesman, Alhaji Tanko Yakassai has advised that powers should be given back to the elected party leaders. Speaking with Independent, Alhaji Yakassai urged that political parties in the country must be reformed, be oriented through ideologies, programmes of what they want to do for the people so that people will begin to appreciate and respect them. Yakassai said this can only be achieved if power is given back to elected party leaders. According to him, “Powers of political parties must be returned to the members of the party”. “You cannot rise to the position of even a messenger in a political party at the state or national level without the blessings or nod of your governor or the president”. The elder statesman who frowned at the rate at which party leaders are being disrespected, blamed former President Olusegun Obasanjo whom he said, was responsible for whittling down the powers of elected party leaders and their structure. This, as it is known, has led to the party chairmen across all platforms and at the various tiers; ward, local, state and national levels, to their being unable to control and direct the affairs of the various political parties. “Obasanjo who made himself the leader of the party, also made governors, leaders of the party in their respective states and this has continued till now. “You cannot become a messenger, chairman or even a secretary of the party, without the blessing of either your governor or the president. So, the party members, rather than respect party leaders, give their alleigance to the president or governors whom they feel are the only people they need. “The first thing we should do, is to take back that power and return it to leaders of the party. With that, party members would respect their party leaders, attend meetings and this would give the party a direction and, the members sense of belonging. Yakassai, who took a swipe at the APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomole said, “Oshiomhole as the APC National Chairman, cannot make you, even a member of the State House of Assembly. “He has only the name of National Chairman. He has no powers, he s empty, the partymen know that their party leaders are empty. “But, if Buhari says you should be this or that, automatically, you will be so, and this also applies to states where the state governors also call the shots”, Yakassai lamented. https://www.independent.ng/oshiomhole-powerless-empty-only-has-the-title-of-national-chairman-tanko-yakassai/?utm_source=&utm_medium=facebook

On this day in history, Thursday, August 29, 1963, a mammoth crowd of about 250,000 people stood outside the historically significant Lincoln Memorial in Washington as Reverend Martin Luther King Jnr said the iconic words “I have a dream” That significant speech in history caused some major changes like the creation of the popularization of the Civil Rights Movements and the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964. The gathering and march on Washington was not just a revolutionary action, it was a turning point in American history as it brought so many people together irrespective of their locations. It is interesting to note that the passion many showed made them conquer long distances as a boy known as Robert Avery, a 15-year-old at that time, had to hitchhike to cover the 700 miles between Alabama and Washington. The march also got the attendance of celebrities such as Harry Belafonte, an actor and singer, and other sensations in Hollywood. With the way celebrities gave credence to the movement, President John F Kennedy’s worry that the march could turn violent was lessened. Though that iconic speech was delivered half a century ago, it has not stopped resonating with people, political and social movements across the world. In 1999, a panel of scholars ranked the speech as number one among the best speeches delivered in the 20th century, which just goes to show how very important the speech is. In all this, it is important to really know who Luther Kings is and have a preview into what his life was during his time. He was born on January 15, 1929 with the original name Michael King Jnr in Atlanta Goergia. He died on April 4, 1968 in Memphis Tennessee. The activist was a Baptist minister who championed the civil right movement in the US from the mid-1950s till his death. It should be noted that his advocacy very much contributed to the ending of segregation of African-Americans in every part of the US. He later became the head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He was given the Novel Peace prize in 1964. https://www.legit.ng/1256784-today-history-august-29-martin-luther-king-jr-delivered-popular-i-have-a-dream-speech.html |
Abakaliki – Ebonyi State Police Command has denied viral media reports alleging a loss of lives during the clash between traders in Abakpa Market and some tax agents of the Ebonyi State government in Abakaliki on Wednesday. The command’s spokesman, Loveth Odaah, only one trader sustained an injury on the head and was immediately rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki for treatment. Our correspondent gathered that trouble started when the Special Adviser to Governor David Umahi on IGR, Martins Ukwuegbu and the Commissioner for Internal Security and Border Peace, Stanley Emegha led some youths to collect the IGR from some traders in the market. The youths it was gathered, were members of the Ekubaraoha Youth Assembly (EYA). Market sources alleged that the ‘revenue collectors’ were using the IGR collection as cover to close down the shops of some traders who took the state government to court over the leadership dispute in the market. According to him, the traders had gone to court to challenge the removal of the market leadership before the expiration of their tenure and imposition of a new intérim leadership on them by the state government. “They came to the market and were taken to the shops of the traders that took them to court and they started closing their shops accusing them of not paying IGR”. ” One of the sons of one of the traders entered into an altercation with them and in the process, a fight broke out”. ” As they were beating him he fell on the ground forcefully and he hit his head on the ground and lost consciousness”. It was gathered that the traders immediately mobilized and attacked the IGR team and beat some of them up while others escaped. Not done, the traders began rioting. They went to the shop of one of the leaders believed to be working with the government and attempted to vandalise it when Police arrived and chased them away. The Police tear-gassed many of them to disperse them and arrested many others. Mr. Mark Onu, Leader of Ekubaraoha Youth Assembly and Umahi’s Special Assistant on Youth Mobilisation denied involvement in the incident. “I am not aware of that, I wasn’t there. You can go and ask the SA on Markets what happened”, he said He also said that no government official has the right to deploy his members for any purpose without informing him. The Commissioner for Internal Security, Stanley Emegha denied that anyone was killed. He noted that he was in the company of the Special Assistant on IGR, Martin’s Okwuegbu went to the market to seal some shops. According to him, five shops were sealed for various reasons ranging from refusal to pay IGR to the shops being used for criminal activities in the market. Okwuegbu on his part said about seven shops were sealed for not paying their taxes. He denied knowledge of any fracas or death adding that the exercise was peaceful. “We sealed the shops and left peacefully. I am just hearing from you that someone died. Nothing like that happened while we were there”, he said. He denied that the exercise was used to victimize some traders as opposed to the government action on the market leadership. “We served them notice to pay three times before going to seal their shops. If anyone says he or she has paid let them come and present their records and we will immediately open the shops”, he said https://www.independent.ng/no-death-in-abakaliki-market-clash-police/?utm_source=&utm_medium=facebook |

G7 Summit: Brazil Rejects $20m Aid To Fight Amazon Fires Channels Television Updated August 27, 2019 Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro delivers a speech, during the new general officers’ promotion ceremony at the Planalto Palace in Brasilia, on April 5, 2019. EVARISTO SA / AFP Brazil on Monday rejected aid from G7 countries to fight wildfires in the Amazon, with a top official telling French President Emmanuel Macron to take care of “his home and his colonies.” “We appreciate (the offer), but maybe those resources are more relevant to reforest Europe,” Onyx Lorenzoni, chief of staff to President Jair Bolsonaro, told the G1 news website. Lorenzoni was referring to a $20 million pledge made at the G7 summit in France to fight the rainforest blaze. “Macron cannot even avoid a foreseeable fire in a church that is a world heritage site. What does he intend to teach our country?” he continued, referring to the fire in April that devastated the Notre-Dame cathedral. The presidency later confirmed the comments to AFP. Brazil’s Environment Minister Ricardo Salles had earlier told reporters they had welcomed the G7 funding to fight the fires and prompted the deployment of the army. But after a meeting between Bolsonaro and his ministers, the Brazilian government changed course. “Brazil is a democratic, free nation that never had colonialist and imperialist practices, as perhaps is the objective of the Frenchman Macron,” Lorenzoni said. Tensions have risen between France and Brazil after Macron tweeted that the fires burning in the Amazon basin amounted to an international crisis and should be discussed as a top priority at the G7 summit. Bolsonaro reacted by blasting Macron for having a “colonialist mentality.” https://www.channelstv.com/2019/08/27/g7-summit-brazil-rejects-20m-aid-to-fight-amazon-fires/ |
