This was the same reason why ibos still cry about the incident in Asaba where 700 ibos were killed in one swoop. This sounds terrible until people learn that this event was a reaction to what biafran soldiers did to the local population of Asaba when they captured the city and were later made to flee when they heard that the Nigerian army was bearing down for the city to re-take it. The dispossessed the population of their food and vehicles (lorries) and fled in them of course tyrannizing them. When the Nigerian army captured the city, the local population was happy and went on a revenge spree on the ibos among them because the soldiers even did not help to evacuate their fellow iboz. On an occassion, an ibo man not realizing it a really stupi.d move, attacked and wounded the leader of the Nigerian battalion who had just taken the city. Well, again, actions and reactions were not equal but surely opposite: they gathered all the ibos they could find, perhaps more male, and retaliated! And how do you know what they will do? It makes no sense to go into strategizing for the elections while looking through the prism of ethnicity, religion or other mundane considerations. I think it is more prudent to let them work their best on the merger project and when it is time to nominate a candidate, let a proven, competent, well-exposed, strong and capable leader who can build bridges to every part of the country be the yardstick for selecting a candidate. The current arrangement of Nigeria makes it such that it is more difficult for example for the north to unilaterally attack the SE. In a breakup, the Hausa's will still look to take more pounds of flesh for their Sadaunna's killing and all the insult they have endured from iboz. Iboz will need to grow all their own food because you will have to pay more for almost every food you will need from the north. In the West, you will not be welcome as residents because if your neighbour-brothers in Nigeria are NOT good enough for you now in the same country; be sure they will refuse to be good enough for you when Nigeria breaks up.
