Foreign AffairsMassive Tornado Kills Dozens In Oklahoma by dadicvila(op): 6:53am On May 21, 2013
More than 50 people are dead after a powerful tornado - nearly 3km wide - swept through Oklahoma City in the US.
A massive tornado carrying winds of up to 320 kph has torn through the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore, ripping up at least two schools and leaving a wake of tangled wreckage.

At least 50 people are dead, including seven children in a school which collapsed during the storm. Seventy-five children took shelter there from the tornado in the town of Moore. Up to two dozen are still believed to be trapped under the rubble after Monday's 3-km-wide tornado.

President Barack Obama spoke with Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin, expressing his concern for those who have been affected and promising all available assistance.

At a press conference in Oklahoma City, Fallin said that additional resources have been called in from out of state, including rescue dogs, as "it will be dark pretty soon and we want to do everything that we can to continue to look for those that might be lost in this tragedy."

She encouraged civilians to stay away from the disaster-struck areas and to leave the work of search and rescue to emergency personnel.

Television video showed tracts of homes destroyed, cars tossed about and piled atop one another, and at least one building on fire.

Rescue workers were pulling third-graders from a severely damaged elementary school in Moore, a KFOR television reporter said from the scene, and aerial video showed first responders sifting through the rubble left behind.

The National Weather Service assigned the twister a preliminary ranking of EF4 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, meaning Monday's was in the second most powerful category of tornado.

"It seems that our worst fears have happened today," said Bill Bunting, National Weather Service meteorologist in Norman, Oklahoma.

The massive twister struck at the height of tornado season, and more were forecast. On Sunday, tornadoes killed two people and injured 39 in Oklahoma.

Witnesses said Monday's tornado appeared to be more fierce than those that tore up the region on May 3, 1999, killing more than 40 people and destroying thousands of homes. That tornado ranked as an EF5, meaning it had winds over 320 kph.

Unknown number of survivors

Officials at two hospitals in the area said they've been treating more than 140 patients, including about 70 children.

"We have many injured and we're just trying to work out how bad it is right now," said a woman who answered the phone at the Moore city manager's office.

Al Jazeera's John Hendren, reporting from Oklahoma City, said the number of injuries remains unknown as the roof of the Moore Medical Centre has "been completely ripped off of the building" and that survivors will have to be taken to nearby towns for treatment.

The injuries could go beyond those sustained directly as a result of the tornado.

"There are hundreds of people walking through the streets," said Hendren.

"The emergency officials here have been so busy dealing with the search that they're having a hard time keeping people from combing through the wreckage, and, of course, that remains dangerous.

The National Weather Service predicted a 10 percent chance of tornadoes in parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Illinois. It said parts of four other states - Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and Iowa - have a 5 percent risk of tornadoes.

The area at greatest risk includes Joplin, Missouri, which on Wednesday will mark two years since a massive tornado killed 161 people.

The latest tornado in Oklahoma came as the state was still recovering from a strong storm on Sunday with fist-sized hail and blinding rain.

Two men in their 70s died in the storm, including one at a mobile home park on the edge of the community of Bethel Acres near Oklahoma City, said Keli Cain, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Office of Emergency Management.

Thirty-nine people were injured around the state as storms toppled trees and tore up  rooftops, she said.

Several hundred homes and buildings were thought to have been damaged or destroyed and approximately 7,000 customers were left without power in Oklahoma. "There is definitely quite a bit of damage," Cain said.

Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin declared 16 counties disaster areas.

More than two dozen tornadoes were spotted in Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas and Illinois, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and local news reports. Hail stones, some as large as baseballs, were reported from Georgia to Minnesota, NOAA said.

The tornado season in the United States had been unusually quiet until last week, when a tornado struck the town of Granbury, Texas, killing six people.

EducationAmassoma:kingdom Of Darkness by dadicvila(op): 9:35am On May 06, 2013
Amassoma Kingdom is situated in Southern Ijaw LGA of bayelsa state,Nigeria..some 30km away from Yenagoa, the state Capital, a waterside village like most Ijaw villages, with a rich Ijaw cultural heritage. It is safe to say that it is one of the biggest Ijaw town, second only to Arogbo town in Ondo state. It's also home to some prominent sons and daughters among whom is Chief DSP Alameisegha, a former Governor of Bayelsa state and the political God father of President Goodluck Jonathan
Above all Amassoma is also the host community of the state owned Niger Delta University(My Alma mata). It's perhaps is the only university town without electricity. The Inability of past and present state Bayelsa state Governments to Provide electricity for a town that is just a measly 25minutes drive from the state capital to me is the 8th wonder of the world
As a student in Amassoma,I remember going into campus late in the evening with the intention of having an all night reading session and meeting jam packed lecture halls, rooms and even the labs, that situation arose because majority of students like me who reside off campus(off course the hostels could only accommodate a very people)troop to the campus every evening to read since its the only place they can be guaranteed electricity. Like every university town, security was a major source of worry,I remember being accosted and robbed a couple of times on my way home,a very close friend of mine who is now a medical Doctor was brutalised by cultists who wanted to take possession of his phone,I also heard cases where other students were robbed and atimes maimed either on their way to campus to read or on their way back home, cases of rape were common place in those days,it is a well known fact that evil and insecurity thrives in darkness. In a state like Bayelsa where complicity reigns supreme and "suffering and smiling" is a way of Life this situation might as well continue for ever, but as an Alumnus of that great school I owe past and present students a duty to draw national attention to this abnormality, yes it is abnormal that a town that is just 25mins drive from the state capital is still in stark darkness over 7years after it was connected to the mainland by the Tombia bridge and the Tombia Amassoma road. It is an abnormality that must not be allowed to continue
It is important to note that certain steps had already been taken by previous administration as contracts running into millions of Naira had been awarded on more than 2 occasions and some transformers and other electrical installations now add to the beauty of amassoma, but "what good is an Orange if it doesn't produce juice??...why successive bayelsa state government keep awarding contracts for the amassoma light project with nothing to show for it remains a mystery to me..I heard from a reliable Son of that Kingdom that certain powerful interest groups do not want electricity in Amassoma because they supply diesel to the university to power their plants,I won't rule it out because in a country like ours where men live only for today and their "bellies and pockets is their god" anything is possible. I remember stories of how certain interest group fought against the construction of the tombia-amassoma road because it will rob them of their livelihood of ferrying students to amassoma by boat from yenagoa, how certain people can be so backward and shortsighted in this 21st century is a total mystery to me
I hereby call on the state Government to as a matter of urgency impose electricity on amassoma kingdom, not for the sake of its indigenes(if they wanted light they would have cried out 4 it)but for the sake of thousands of students of Niger Delta University who risk their lives every night going to the campus to read, charge their phones and iron their clothes and suffer terrible mosquito bites and subsequent malaria ailment
I urge the administration of Hon Seriake Dickson not to repeat the sins of past administrations who invested millions into the amassoma electricity project without even a lighted bulb to show for it..No progress can be made in darkness,a university community without electricity is unheard of. I appeal to the present bayelsa state Government to transform amassoma from a Kingdom of darkness to a kingdom of marvelous light

SportsRangers Or Warri Wolves?? by dadicvila(op): 9:04am On Feb 25, 2013
Nations Cup hero Sunday Mba
yesterday, in Sunday Vanguard, said
that he was a Rangers player having
moved from Warri Wolves to the Enugu
side at the end of last season.
Warri Wolves have repeatedly said that the attacking midfielder was still their player as transfer formalities had not been done. The Nigeria Premier League Interim Management Committee had also looked into the player’s contract and ruled him a Warri Wolves player. But Mba made the following comment yesterday: “We were four players that left Warri Wolves before
the Nations Cup. Why is it that I am the
only one they are bothering. The truth
of the matter is that I have no contract
with Wolves.”
Wolves so sure that no transfer
formalities had taken place yesterday
directed Mba to return to the club for
training on or before Friday, March 1.
“We don’t want to be exchanging
words or be arguing about Sunday Mba.
If he were a bonafide player of Rangers
let them field him in a match and see if
they would not be sanctioned,” Amaju
Pinnick, the Executive Chairman of
Delta State Sports Commission said,
adding that “the Interim Management
Committee ruled on February 13 that
he was a Warri Wolves player as
Rangers were yet to buy him and we
want to leave it at that.”
Warri Wolves spokesman, Etu Moses
tried to accuse Mba of treachery,
saying “why did he present himself as
Warri Wolves player and collected
additional N2.5m when the governor of
Delta State rewarded Super Eagles
players on February 14 with N2.5m
each? “His became N5m because the
governor doubled the reward for all the
Warri Wolves players. He has one year
remianing in his contract,” Moses said,
adding that the club expected Mba to
resume in Warri on or before March 1,
1013.
Rangers’ spokesman Foster Chime said
yesterday that “this matter is between
the Delta Football Association and the
Enugu State Football Association.
At the 2009/1010 season, Sunday Mba
went to Dolphin on loan from Rangers
and another matter is to know how he
ended up in Warri Wolves. The
chairman of our state FA, Chidi Okenwa
has all the documents and we will be
going to Abuja to sort out things.”
The Delta FA said yesterday they
equally had documents to prove that
Rangers had no genuine claim on Mba.
