lurkee: @debrief It is easy to look from the outside and say " Why can't you just leave?! " but, as someone who has seen domestic violence in close friends and family, it is not easy for the woman to leave especially when kids are involved. Especially in Nigeria. In Nigeria, leaving your husband is one of the greatest "sins" and would ostracise many women from friends. Also these women are left with nothing and prefer to work it out in the hope their husband would change.

I hope the government does something soon because the men usually get away with it. Domestic violence happens in the west too but imagine if you had a better choice in the matter. Knowing that even though you leave this abuser, you kids will still go to school, you will get a roof over your head, your government will pay you a small "salary" so you don't go hungry and so on. Imagine that happening in Nigeria, many marriages will end because some women would be liberated and will feel they no longer have to suffer so their kids can have a functional life.
Many women remain in such abusive marriages because they actually do not have any place to go to in Nigeria, not because they want to remain with the men. If the broken system is fixed many women will leave knowing that they and their kids will have a normal functioning life as you rightly said.

debrief08: I am sorry I sound heartless but I feel no pity or tears for her, she wanted to die as a married woman and she did as Mrs. Kevin, she got her wish. She built her life around someone who didn't love or want her, as many Nigerian woman do, stayed praying fasting and killing herself as they will always tell you to do, become a donkey, stay married, Divorce is a sin Never leave ur home for another woman, fight for your marriage, take your mind away from ur husband, concentrate on ur kids, blah blah blah while you die internally. She is dead and as usual the prententious advisers start lamenting and crying, well she fought to the grave for her "home" she wanted to stay and be miserable with someone who didn't love her, if she was alive I would have given her advice and satisfied my conscience, she wanted to die married, let them continue oh, so many like her, they should continue to stay and die, they will come and post the stories here while d man they killed themselves for is getting ready to bring in d babe he has been dating. The kids they claim to stay for now who is there to love and care for them? Insult me, call me names but I don't feel one bit sorry. Marriage is a do or die for Nigerian women, shey she is happy now she died married
I have followed your own personal stories and you were once in her shoes. You mentioned that you endured lots of beatings and humiliations before you left. If it was as easy as you claim why didn't you leave the 2nd or 3rd time your ex husband beat you up. You said your ex husband once beat you so bad you thought you were going to die but you still stayed, why didn't you leave then? I am not saying that women should tolerate any form of violence, actually the way women in Nigeria tolerate nonsense just to remain married by force is silly and ridiculous. But the issue is, it is not always easy to walk out, you were there and you did not walk out immediately, it took you time and lots of beatings and humiliation before you left even though you had no child. The same reason that made you to stay and not leave after the 2nd or 3rd time of serious belt lashing, beating and humiliation is the same reason why she stayed. In her case she had kids with special attention and needs. I am not saying that what she did was right, but you shouldn't be saying what you said. You were once there and it took you time to walk away. What if you had died or had a permanent disability while you were still hanging in there? Will you appreciate it if some one else writes such about you?

Christianity EtcRe: Pls Am Really Confused About This Bible Passage by dalaman: 5:38pm On Feb 01, 2012
theosci:
Don't worry, it is definitely are hard passage to wrap your mind around. In order to understand this, you have to look at the historical context of that passage. It was during Ancient Rome and women had the social status just above slaves. They had no say in those times and had to answer to their husbands. Paul is saying this in his letter to the church of Corinth to protect them from unnecessary hardship. Because back then, a woman speaking in church would be downright scandalous at best. The woman could have actually gotten in a lot of trouble for behavior like that. So during that time, yes it would have been shameful for a woman to speak in church. Not that Paul was for women being silent. He actually applauded women a number of times for their effort, such as the women in the church of Phillipi. However, he also knew that he had to work with the culture or a lot of women could have gotten punished. After all, the same was said about slaves too (male or female). They would have gotten into serious trouble for speaking in church. Now it wouldn't be shameful for women to do this since our culture is completely different. Remember, when studying the Bible, historical context is very important take notice of.
If we are to go by your reasoning then EVERY  teaching and injunction in the bible can be argued to be obsolete when looked at in historical context. Very few things in the bible "agree" with the modern world if we are to go by your reasoning.

^my point is quite simple dekung - and I suspect you understand it very well smiley So instead of the new priest to go behind the custom, understand its purpose and then modify the instruction to say "kill any animal that disturbs & disrupts the service" he continues to kill cats just because it is what the priests before him did.

I want us to ask ourselves, how much of our christian beliefs & rules are simply empty, purposeless, ritualistic killing of cats? actions that have long lost the original meaning for which it was intended?
If we are to go by your reasoning then its also VERY OK to concluded that most of the teachings and instructions of Jesus himself are purposeless, ritualistic killing of cats.

Christianity EtcWhere Exactly Is God? by dalaman(op): 11:57pm On Jan 24, 2012
Where exactly is God? Does he live in the universe or out of the universe? According to the bible God once lived in the sky and the people tried to build a tower to where he lives, now with the help of observatories like the Hubble space telescope and other observatories we have been able to look deep into the universe but haven't seen any God. We have traveled into space(Higher than the tower of Babel) yet we haven;t seen God. Does God live outside the universe? If he does then how does he act in the universe? Is he every where? This seems like another one of those totally meaning free religious answers because it has a lot of problems to it. Is God in all of us? Its not so clear to me. If we can get to know or be with God only after we are dead then will our souls move out of the universe to another place? And what of a person that died at the age of 80 and another person that died a the age of 12 will they resurrect in the after life with their old and young bodies respectively? Am I thinking too much? undecided

I admire your constructive question. Let me ask u dis question. Do u realy tink everytin in d world just came 2 b,d sky, d ocean, mountain and wat av u.
No, i don't think so. But there are natural and convincing explanations for their existence which may or may not be true, but when you look at the world, you see many mindless forces acting on their own with no particular purpose. For every amazing act we attribue to our creator there is also a horrible act of creation as well. For example take the beautiful land scape around as a beautiful act of creation, then compare it with the earthquake. Animals and diesease, stuffs like that.

Also av u heard of strange powers lik d occult, witches, mermaid, ifa, amadioha nd odas nd av u com in contact with any of dis, my dear, we belif in difer tins as gods bt i tel u God exist. Rememba It is only a fool dat says there is no God
I have heard about such things but i haven't come in contact with any of them. Do all these things exist or is it our belief in them that sustain their existence? Am i thinking too much?

Nice one. I salute your courage &boldness. Let me say this. God may decide to reveal hmself to u if he truly exist and may decide not to do same. Till then goodluck in your search for answers huh
Has God reveled himself to you personally? Many people have made such claims to me but when I ask them about specifics, I always get confusing answers some get testy and insist that I just accept their assertions without any meaningful explanation. I sincerely hope that God will reveal himself to me because am so confused right now.
Christianity EtcDoes God Truly Exist? I Am Dumbfounded by dalaman(op): 6:07pm On Aug 13, 2011
Just wanna share my innermost thoughts on this because I have been a litile confused lately, I've been trying to put myself into "the mind of the atheist" in how I view the world.

I have been looking up at the sky a lot and I discovered that we are in a a kind of dome. Studied astronomy and discovered that there are way too many planets out there that our importance on this planet to me is insignificant. Take out our solar system today and the universe will not feel as if it has lost anything. Everything will continue just the way it has. . .Many solar systems have come and gone and yet the universe is just there, for ever expanding into space, for how long it will continue to expand I don't know. So this brings me to the question of existence of God.

I have also been looking around at various aspects of nature trying to see exactly where God is. While doing this, I came up with a thought provoking question and challenged myself by asking myself this question.

When I look around the world, I see nature. I do not see the spiritual God anywhere. Now, one may say God is evidenced in creation, but for the sake of this question, I am trying to look for the actual spirit of where God might be hanging out. And personally i do not see a God that interacts with his creation any where, all I see are organisms and forces of nature acting on each other alone.

My thought can be summed up as thusly:

"When I look around the world, I see no spiritual beings. Likewise, atheists look around the world and see no spiritual beings as well. Why then must we come up with a God explanation and defend it very rigorously when we all look around and can see nothing? Why must we come up with all these excuses such as 'Oh God doesn't do x and x and x because of y and y and y?' Every single person that lived in the past saw the exact same world that we see today and saw it behave the same way we do today. Yet, despite all the thousands of years of history and God debates, we are still using the same arguments and discussion as man did hundreds to thousands of years ago. Why even start inventing reasons and excuses for something that we can't even see?"

I can not answer this question no matter how hard I try. Putting aside all personal religious beliefs and just looking around the world around me, has me dumbfounded.

Ancient man saw nothing different than we do today. many people that lived and died saw the same natural world where mindless forces are just acting out on their own for no particular purpose. It appears that nature has always been silent on the subject of God.

Why are we no closer to answering the question "Does God exist?" today than we were thousands of years ago?

Does God really exist and he's hiding? Do we truly believe so much that its our belief that is making us see, not necessarily because there is God?

Or is nature's silence on the subject proof he doesn't exist and we just make up excuses to justify the silence from nature? Am truly confused.
