dayokanu: No way they would lose the popular votesDayokanu, please play with the model. If Jonathan gets 97& or 98% of the votes in the SS and SE as he did in 2011, and if voter turnout in those two regions are the same as they were in 2011, it will be impossible for him to lose the election. That being said, Jonathan won the SS and SE by astronomical margins because the opposition did not campaign there. In Nigeria, it is easier to rig an election when your opponent has no supporters on ground to cry foul. GEJ has been a disappointing president and I am sure that 15% - 20% of SS and SE voters will vote for another candidate if that candidate states his or her case. Please remember that in an election where the popular vote determines the winner you do not ignore any voter. |
dayokanu: Theres no campaign Buhari can do in Delta, Bayelsa and rivers that would change anything just like Jonathan cant muster any campaign in Katsina, Kano etc without the presidential paparazzi and protectionJonathan did now win Kano but he got 440,666 votes. He didn't win Kastina either but he got 428,392 votes. We do not have a winner take all electoral college in Nigeria. In Nigeria, the winner of the popular vote wins a Presidential election. GEJ won over 800,000 votes from the 2 aforementioned states, thus contributing to his total tally. APC needs to do the same in the SE and the SS. |
dayokanu: To win an election you dont need to win in all 36 statesYou can do that when you have an electoral college that is winner take all. However, in Nigeria you need to win the popular vote. APC needs votes from everywhere including the SS and SE if not they will lose. |
dayokanu: The new Party shouldnt waste much resources in the South South and SE cos they would return Jonathan regardlessThe new party needs to campaign in the SE and SS like their life depended on it. They wouldnt be campaigning to win 51%. They would be campaigning to win at least 20%. At the moment Jonathan has a firewall in the SE and the South South. We must remember that even in states Jonathan lost in 2011, he was a very respectable 2nd place finisher. In the NE and WE combined Buhari won 10,078,356 votes while Jonathan won 5,228,346 votes. That was a respectable second place finish. On the other hand in the the SS and SE, Jonathaan won 11,103,854 votes while Buhari won only 31,383 votes. What this means is that Jonathan wiped out all of Buhari's NW and NE advantage by winning the SS and SE. I would be the first to say that the SS and SE in 2011 were probably rigged. However, the only way you can blatantly rig is when the opposition has NO presence in your area. I am not saying that the new party needs to win the SE and the SS; all I am saying is that it needs to be a respectable second place finisher. |
Op, hope you put into consideration the multiple rigging of pdp in your equation? No equation will be balanced without putting in effect the pdp rigging mechanism. They so perfected it that they get almost 90% of total number of registered voters in a state, recording another 96% voters turnout!
You are very funny. I normalized the numbers in this analysis. In the 2011 election, the results from the SS and SE were very suspicious. For example in 2011, the turnout was as follows: SW (32%), NC (48%), NW (55%), NE (54%), SE (67%), and SS (67%). From the above, you can see that turnout in the SE and SS is disproportionately higher. Given that in 2011, voter enthusiasm was highest in the NW, NE, SS, and SE, and given that elections were considered more free and fair in the NW and NE, we account for the perceived fraudulent votes in the SS and SE by reducing the voter participation in the SS and SE by 20%. Once you do that voter participation comes down to 54% in the SE and 55% in the SS. |
peckhamboi: Good analysis but I still believe Buhari is the best option for the opposition, he is the only person who can deliver 12 million votes without spending a dime, he is incomparable to people like Ribadu who couldnt even deliver his own state in the last presidential election. I am 100% sure the SW will definitely not vote for GEJ so the real battle lies in NC, if the opposition can add states like Kogi, Kwara, Nassarawa, Edo in addition the the SW, then they have a great chance to defeat the PDP. People like Okorocha, Ngige, Oshiomole could also help the opposition getting a sizeable number of votes in the SS/SE.I made very conservative assumptions in the model. If you look at the model you will see that Lagos is a statistical tie. The reason why is because of the large Igbo and Niger Delta population. I think that the assumptions I used represent a fair base case scenario. That being said, it is very possible for Jonathan's popularity to decline even further thus creating a wave dissatisfied citizens voting against him. Anything can happen. |
Wadeoye: Where did GEJ got 70 million votes from? You are ignorant. GEJ got only 22 million votes even despite all the rigging and padding of figures in SS and SE.Thank you. |
wesley80: Some Nigerians really can be unbelievably stuupid! I can't believe supposedly educated folks are still rooting for Buhari even in the face of a landmark merger that should ordinarily present a platform for some kind of political revolution. What is wrong with us? How's a seventy something year old barely literate retired army General who blamed a "PDP kamfuter" for his electoral loss and whose most noteworthy accomplishment as a Head of state was being a ball-less figurehead while his second in command ran the show, the best a supposedly educated well meaning Nigerian can propose? I just don't get it.LMAO how can I respond to this. I am not in my 70s I am actually in my 20s. The assumptions I put into the model was an example i.e. a scenario. Many options should be examined and you are free to examine your own options. All I am saying is that it helps to have data when evaluating options. Having data helps you answer questions like: can a candidate win with votes from only the NW, NE, and SW? What percent of votes would a candidate need from the SS and SE? Those are valid questions that need to be answered and a model like this can help. While Buhari has many shortcomings, the reason why many people in the opposition still bring up his name is because he brings 12 million votes to the table at very little expense. Presidential campaigns cost a lot of money in Nigeria and if a merger can start off with 12 million votes, they could look for 6 - 8 million more votes from SW, NC, SS, and SE. You dont need to engage in name calling. Debate the topic and I will respond in kind. |
I disagree with you. First of all CPC has 6 senators and about 33 representatives. How many does APGA have? At the end of the day, please remember that mergers happen because of the belief in synergies. In the world of mergers 1 + 1 = 3 because of synergies. You can bash CPC all you want but their presidential candidate got 12 million votes. How many did ACN and ANPP get in 2011? In 2011 the opposition had its limited resources scattered. This time they would be able to devote all of their resources to supporting one presidential ticket. Doing so would create a perception of formidability. Please remember that many Nigerians dont vote because they do not believe that the opposition can win. With this merger in place, the opposition will perform better because there would be a perception that they are a formidable match against PDP. |
I think that the opposition could give PDP a run for its money but it would still be a close election. If the opposition presents Buhari and Fashola, many dissatisfied Jonathan supporters would simply stay at home on election day because Buhari is a divisive figure; but I am not yet sure if many of them would vote for Buhari. The key to success though, would be to make sure that Jonathan does not get a unanimous mandate from the South South and Southeast. The opposition should campaign in those two regions very aggressively. The opposition winning 25% in the Southsouth and Southeast would be a big blow to Jonathan. |
PDP vs APC - 2015 Presidential Election Projection Model Hello Nairalanders, Given the news of the merger, I thought it would be nice for us to have a data driven debate on the 2015 election. I have made some edits to my 2011 model and I have come up with a new improved model for 2015 presidential election. The three tabs in the model are as follows: Summary: Shows the summarized election result. Input (Make Edits Here): This tab allows you to make edits to the assumptions of the model based on the number of votes the 4 major candidates got in the 2011 election. You should only edit the cells that are colored yellow and red. For example under the heading "% of Jonathan's 2011 Votes" you can make assumptions on whether Jonathan would get 100% of the votes he got in 2011 or whether other candidates will get some of the votes he won. You can do the same for the other candidate who ran in 2011. You can also make edits to voter turnout based on whether you expect it to increase or decrease. Election Result Details: This shows the detailed election result by state. I have made my assumptions in the model for the 2015 election and I think that it will be a very close race if the ACN, CPC, ANPP, and APGA are united behind Buhari and Fashola. Please look at the model and ask any question you have about the assumptions I made. I do not want to go into detail because I don’t want my post to be too long. Please do not edit the Summary or Election Result Details tabs. ONLY MAKE EDITS TO THE CELLS COLORED YELLOW AND RED ON THE INPUT (MAKE EDITS HERE) TAB. |
Jarus: I am a big fan of Buhari, for his anti-corruption and discipline credential.Very insightful post. You always make sense Jarus. |
This is a very funny cover letter that has gone viral on wall street. Surprisingly many of the big investment banks have been trying to hire this kid after his cover letter went viral. http://www.businessinsider.com/student-sends-great-cover-letter-for-internship-at-bank-and-its-now-going-viral-on-wall-street-2013-1

GAR3TH: Can someone explain how GEJ can run in 2015? I thought the constitution said you can only have two terms as president? Didn't Johnathan serve his first term when he took over from yar'adua and he's second when he won the elections? I thought Nigeria's constitution was similar to the USA? LBJ only served 6 years as president after JFK was assassinated and did not contest the following elections. Because he would have past the 8 year limit and would have served 3 terms in office. You are not correct. LBJ could have run for a second term but he refused to seek his party's nomination because his disapproval rating was very high due to the unpopular Vietnam war. |
Eko Ile: ^^^^ That was 2011 and a lot of rigging. You are correct. The numbers I provided were not adjusted to account for electoral malpractices. I have a model that accounts for it so here is my summary. In 2011, the voter turnout in the NW was 54.5%, NE 54.2%, NC 47.7%, SW 32.3%, SE 66.9%, and SS 66.9%. Given that voter intensity was highest in the NW, NE, SE, and SS and given that the results in the NW and NE were perceived to be more credible, we can account for the fraudulent votes in the SE and SS by pegging the voter participation of those regions to the voter participation in the NW and NE. Doing this will decrease the voter participation in the SS and SE by approximately 20%. Once this adjustment is made, GEJ still nets 3,967,862 votes in the SE vs Buhari's 5,207,166 in the NW and NE (excluding Adamawa and Taraba). All I am saying is that we need some votes from the Southeast in order to improve our chances of winning the election. Right now, the SE and SS are very good buffers for GEJ. It will be a brilliant move by the opposition to eat into that buffer by winning 20% - 30% of the votes in those regions. |
Demdem: it still doesnt change anything. even with the full support of Igbos, the retardeen will still be booted out.Demdem please dont be too quick to say that. In 2011 GEJ won 99% in Abia, 99% in Anambra, 98% in Imo, 95.6% in Ebonyi, and 98.5% in Enugu. In total GEJ got 4,985,246 votes in the Southeast while Buhari got 20,335 votes. GEJ netted 4,964,911 votes in the Southeast alone. On the other hand in the Northwest, Buhari got 6,453,437 votes while GEJ got 3,395,437 votes. In the Northeast, Buhari got 3,624,919 votes while GEJ got 1,832,622. In the Northwest Buhari netted 3,057,713 votes and in the Northeast he netted 1,792,297 votes. Combined, in the Northwest and Northeast Buhari netted 4,850,010 votes (excluding Taraba and Adamawa which are not Buhari strong holds, Buhari netted 5,207,166 votes in the NW and NE). The point I am trying to make is that the Southeast alone allows Jonathan to neutralize Buhari's advantage in the Northwest and Northeast. Hence, the future opposition candidate must work hard to win votes in the Southeast. As you can see, the biggest advantage that PDP has is that even when they lose states in a Presidential election, they are always a respectable second place finisher. While the opposition can win the Presidential election without winning the Southeast, it cannot win without at least 20% or 25% of the votes in the Southeast and the Southsouth. Demdem at the end of the day, we cannot make dismissive remarks about a region where we need to attract votes. |
Sincere 9gerian: Definitely, its not only people from Niger state the use train services along that route. In any case, when push comes to shove, even 25% of votes from your enemies camp can make all the difference.I guess Jonathan considers his political opponents as his enemies. That is wonderful fresh air. |
Sincere 9gerian: Those 3,000 to 5,000 persons being moved per trip on that route via the resuscitated railway, will speak with their vote come 2015, if GEJ decides to re-contest.If you think that Niger state will vote for GEJ over Buhari in 2015, then I have a bridge to sell you. |
Demdem: The control of the NASS is desirable however considering the Nigerian context its not a must that he/she will need them to perform well. even now that the retardeen's men are in charge, how far has he faired? |
We must all remember that for a non-PDP President to perform well, he or she would need to have control of the national assembly. Do you think that the opposition can realistically win the national assembly? |
T.A. Orji of Abia and Kelechi of Ebonyi. Those guys have maximized their states potentials in an extraordinarily unique way, with the little they've got they were able to build a function bore hole in three senatorial areas in their respective states. Just last year, T.A. Orji was voted the most security conscious governor in the whole of Nigeria. to the extent that he represented Nigeria in delivering speech in Ghana on security. He is doing the work of GEJ. Story short, these able indisputable great governors are the ones the crown fit. Orji for president, Kelechi as the deputy. #voteorji2015#
LOL!!!! This is a very funny joke. |
fellis: He looks better in the first picture. In the 2nd picture he looks kind of shabby.I agree with you. |
zakkyboy please use paragraphs next time. I couldn't read what you posted. |
seedord247: Its not in our culture to do such neither does it in bible or quran...Would you circumcise your daughter? Most of our female ancestors were circumcised. |
Sincere 9gerian: Why cant some of you disabuse your minds for even one second? This thread is not about comparing Fashola and GEJ. Rather it is about demand for ACCOUNTABILITY, OPENNESS and TRANSPARENCY at the 3 tiers of govt, particularly as it affects budgeting for food and refreshment at the state level- Lagos state in this instanceIf the thread is not comparing GEJ to Fashola, why does it have Lagos in the title? Why are you singling out Lagos when there are many other states that need to be more accountable, open, and transparent. Is Lagos the only state in Nigeria? Dont even try to insult my intelligence. |
Sincere 9gerian why are you asking for only the numbers from Lagos? What about the numerous governors out there who are doing absolutely nothing for their states. It is clear that Jonathan and his cronies are JEALOUS of Fashola. At the end of the day, Retardeen is not worthy of even shinning Fashola's shoe. |
Arnold1: What about Ojukwu who ran to Ivory Coast with millions rather than stay and fight ? Isn't he a coward ?Fight and end up like Ghadaffi?? The man had been fighting for 2 years. It was clear and unequivocal that the Biafran forces had been defeated. At the time Ojukwu left, Biafra had already turned into a nomadic refugee camp. Ojukwu left a few days before the federal troops took over the Udi airport (the only airport left in Biafra). If he stayed, they would have killed him and given him the gift of martyrdom. Point blank, if Ojukwu was made a martyr, Igbos would never have completely surrendered. We would still have Igbo militant committing terrorist activities all in the name of their deceased leader. Just look at Boko Haram, it was after their, Yusuf, was killed that they took their terrorist activities to new heights. I think that Ojukwu escaping was one the best things that ever happened to Nigeria. |
texazzpete: Ironic and amusing how cowed people living contentedly under deviant rulers can call other people 'cowards' with a straight face. You hit the nail on the head. |
What we need in Nigeria are strong institutions that deter people from engaging in corrupt practices. Unfortunately, strong institutions require selfless leaders to build them. That is why I supported Buhari in the last election. At the end of the day a President who wines and dines with Anenih and Alams is not going to transform Nigeria. The most he can do is make some minor tweaks. After his tenure is over, we would still be at risk of having a greedy politician replacing him and embezzling all our resources. |
pro01: Utter rubbish. Soyinka has more sense than that. He certainly would never make such uncharitable comments for any reason whatsoever. Since when did it become a crime to be illiterate, or to marry someone that is illiterate? In any case, we all know Patience is a graduate, which makes her far from 'illiterate'.We do not have to be diplomatic about Patience. She may have gone to school, but school didn't go through her. Notwithstanding, the poster made a very elitist statement. Being illiterate is not a crime. There are many educated people who lack common sense while there are many self-educated people who lack paper credentials. Everybody's story is different, and we shouldn't judge somebody negatively simply because they do not have a piece of paper from a University. Please remember that "na condition dey make crayfish bend." |
Eko Ile: They were not elected by Yoruba people, there were rigged in by the same useless and incompetent losers wrecking your land. The fact that the clowns you are talking about are Yoruba doesn't mean we don't have endless reservoir of competent people, the competent people you people don't have hence your backwardness and stagnation.Eko Ile, I said in a later post that I was not saying that Yorubas do not have competent people. There are many competent people in Yoruba land but the political elite sometimes select incompetent people. What I was trying to say was that if the people of a state have to choose between a competent nonindigene settler and an incompetent indigene, they should choose the competent nonindigene settler. |
