MANofMEN:
Group insists Fani-Kayode is threat to national unity

* Says fake news and hate messages must be taken seriously by security agencies

A political group in Nigeria has reiterated its call that former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode be arrested for divisive messages peddled on social media.

The President of the Initiative to Save Democracy, ISD, James Sunday Akinloye, noted that hate must be erased from Nigeria’s politics especially hate messages and fake news.

He explained that if Nigeria’s democracy must grow, then certain persons must be used as example to other that there are laws regulating social media in Nigeria and that people cannot just concoct fake stories.

He noted that it has been four days since ISD petitioned the Nigerian Police and DSS to arrest Fani-Kayode but that there is still no action.

“We read with interest the response by South-South Political Vanguard describing our petition to the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services as a ploy to gain cheap political ploy but this is not true.

“We are dedicated to ensuring that Nigeria’s democracy is preserved and that certain persons who have evil agenda are brought to book by the law. There should be a reaction to every action, Akinloye argued.

He pointed to some messages on Twitter written and published by Fani-Kayode. “For example, days before President Muhammadu Buhari visited the United States, he urged President Donald Trump to subject President Buhari to a DNA test because he is Jubril from Sudan. How can anyone say that? he quizzed.

He then pointed to yet another tweet by the former campaign spokesperson for Goodluck Jonathan in 2015. In Fani-Kayode’s own words, “The man that is there today is Jubril from Sudan and not Buhari. Buhari is dead and he never came back from London. Only his body did. They invoked the spirit of Jubril and placed it in Buhari’s body. It is a common ritual amongst Satanists. Many lives were sacrificed in the process,” he tweeted on 5 April 2018.

Akinloye argued that the group has made photocopies of the hate messages and fake news which were peddled by Fani-Kayode and have attached it to a petition that will be taken to the police and DSS this week.

“It is important that we do not allow ourselves to be carried away by a response from a group that does not understand the gravity of fake news and hates speeches.

“First we think the Nigerian Police should arrest him immediately and then charge him to court. We have evidences of his cybercrime and the hate it has sown amongst young Nigerians in their formative years.

“We have hundreds of responses to some of his post which shows how it was shaping the ideology and philosophy of some Nigerians towards hate and divisiveness and we will not stand and watch kids who are just joining social media to be swayed by this kind of messages.

Akinloye noted that if the DSS and police refuse to arrest Fani-Kayode then his group along with others will stage a peaceful protest both in Lagos and Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

“If we must embark on a peaceful protest, so be it. Enough of hate speeches and fake news. Mr Fani-Kayode must understand that there are cybercrime laws and if you err, then you should be punished.

Good. There has to be responsibility in exercising your right to freedom of speech. Deji is a fake news purveyor; his tweets and Facebook posts are incendiary. I blame the Nigerian police who has been very clueless and has refused to arrest and charge these Twitter hooligans to court where they stay in prison until their trial is over. cool

Nigerians can hardly identify fake news when they see one. Kim Jong-un never travels out of his country, aside China. So where did the so-called international finance forum hold? In the mind of a blogger who's an expert at spinning fake news stories. If someone playfully opens a thread tonight that says "Breaking Newd: Osinbajo decamps to PDP", trust gullible people to swoop on it and begin commenting zealously. If supposed educated youths cannot decipher between fake news and real news, there's a big problem, and Nairaland is not helping.

On a serious note, he's done a foolish thing if he's currently serving because he could be summoned for it and face multiple punishments like extension of service, non-payment of allowances, and even imprisonment on a lonely island inhabited by wolves. gringrin

Some people just have penchant for fake or distorted news. There's no mention of the word 'immortalise' in that whole article, but they're busy whipping themselves in and out even when they either know that the man didn't say so.

I wonder how a museum that détails the evils of insurgency equals immortalising BH founder. Is it going to be named Boko Haram Museum? No!
There's a slavery museum in Badagry (as Ivandragon pointed out), and there's a Nigerian Civil War Museum in Enugu as well, etc. Is the slavery museum immortalising or praising slavery. History of the holocaust is a part of school curriculum in Germany; is Germany immortalising Hitler? No.

Until we stop being hypocritical and accept the fact that there's a wide difference between criticism and outright hate speech, we may just be heading to a Rwanda-esque genocide. And the police force and court too are not helping matters. cool

What many people on Twitter, Nairaland, Facebook call free speech is nothing less than hate speech and fake news designed to cause war. The police have been shackled from arresting people because they know the cases will drag on in court endlessly.

Another foolish and senseless comparison, Republican party and democratic party both started in the 18th century and both stand for two different distinct ideologies, name one party outside those two running a state in America. APC and PDP consist of the same members with practically no ideology. But poor citizens like you have been fooled and intellectually battered to make you believe they are different political parties. When you read, dont read and Crame words for word, read with understanding and meaning.
LOL. My emphasis is that America has more than 30 political parties unlike your belief that it has only two. Instead of you to own up to the fact that you didn't know before now, you're busy throwing unnecessary tantrums about APC and PDP and telling me when Rep and Dem parties started. I only made a comparison with our Nigerian parties because they're the two major parties just as APC and PDP are. I'm done with you.

How does that sound like fighting? He made a senseless comment and i called him out so I could correct his impression, America run two political party system, and none of them is a mushroom party like the point he was trying to raise. No insult intended.
So you're still claiming ignorance that you didn't see the link I included there that shows America has more than 30 political parties? Democratic Party and Republican Party are the equivalent of Nigeria's PDP and APC. SO, between you and I, who's making the senseless comment now?

As it stands now, any vote for Sowore is a protest vote and do not count. The same goes for Mrs Oby, Duke, and Fela.
If Trump had decided to contest under a mushroom party, he would never have won. He needed a big platform to sell his manifesto and the rest they say, is now a beautiful history!

If it was possible that all these achievers had formed a coalition with PDP and one of them was able to grab the ticket, they'll have given Buhari a run for his money.
mike1994reds:
Your trump comparison is foolish and senseless, America run two political party system and people in America vote on ideas and policies of the candidates, trump won cos of his policies on immigration, health care, and tax.you people in Nigeria vote as your stomach leads you, and that is the problem!
Mr man, who are you fighting with? Communicate your opinion in a civil manner pls.

For your information, America has more than 30 national political parties, aside regional or state-wide parties. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_political_parties_in_the_United_States . Now answer the question: If Trump had contested under American Freedom Party or Green Party, would he have won?

Politics › BREAKING NEWS: Appeal Court Reduces Ex-gov, Joshua Dariyes Jail Term by Daviddson(op): 12:03pm On Nov 16, 2018
The Court of Appeal in Abuja has reduced the jail term of ex-Governor Joshua Dariye to 10 years.

PREMIUM TIMES reported how Mr Dariye, a former Plateau State governor, was in June sentenced to 14 years in prison by the high court.

However, the appeal court on Friday said while the conviction was right, the former governor should have been jailed for 10 years.

The court reduced the sentence of 14 years to 10 years for criminal breach of trust while a similar conviction for diversion of N1. 62 billion ecological funds was reduced from two years to one year. The sentences are to run concurrently, like the previous judgement in June, meaning Mr Dariye has now been effectively jailed 10 years.

The appeal court ruled that the lower court aired in law when it sentenced Mr Dariye, a first time offender, to the maximum 14 years term contained in the charge against him.

According to the court, the sentence was handed down in the season of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act which does not allow maximum sentence for first time offenders.

It would be recalled that High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Gudu, Abuja, presided by Justice Adebukola Banjoko on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 sentenced Mr Dariye who was a serving senator to 14 years’ imprisonment on charges of criminal breach of trust and criminal appropriation of the state’s funds.

The ex-governor was convicted on 15 out the 23 counts preferred against him in July 2007.
