A Nigerian man has survived for two-and-a-half days trapped 30m (98ft) deep in freezing seawater. Harrison Okene, 29, was on board the tug boat Jascon-4 when it capsized in heavy swells. It sank to the seabed, upside down, but Mr Harrison was trapped in an air pocket and able to breathe. Of the other 12 people on board,10 bodies have already been found and Mr Harrison is assumed to be the only survivor. Mr Harrison told Reuters journalist Joe Brock that he could hear fish eating the dead bodies of his fellow crew members. Intense thirst The Jascon-4 capsized on 26 May, about 32km (20 miles) off the coast of Nigeria, while it wasstabilising an oil tanker at a Chevron platform. Mr Harrison was working there as a cook, according to the ship's owners, West African Ventures. Mr Harrison told Reuters he was in the toilet when he realised that the boat was beginning to turn over, and as the vessel sank,he managed to find his way to an area with an air pocket. Mr Harrison survived in an air pocket, 30m underwater in pitch darkness "I was there in the water in totaldarkness just thinking it's the end. I kept thinking the water was going to fill up the room but it did not," he said. "I was so hungry but mostly so, so thirsty. The salt water took the skin off my tongue." "I could perceive the dead bodies of my crew were nearby. I could smell them. The fish camein and began eating the bodies. I could hear the sound." But after 60 hours, Mr Harrison heard the sound of knocking. A team from the DCN global diving company had come to investigate - sent by Chevron and West African Ventures. "We expected it to be a body recovery job," DCN spokespersonJed Chamberlain told the BBC's Impact programme. Mr Harrison "actually grabbed the second diver who went past him," Mr Chamberlain said, adding that the diver concerned got quite a fright. "This changed the whole nature of the operation to a rescue operation." Decompression But even after Mr Harrison had been found, he still faced a complex process to bring him out safely. Having been at such depth for so many hours, he needed time in a decompression chamber to normalise his body pressure. Christine Cridge, a medical director at the Diving Diseases Research Centre (DDRC), advised the rescue team during this process. "It's a situation I've not come across before," she told the BBC's Newsday programme. "After a certain amount of time at pressure, nitrogen will dissolve into the tissues. If he'd ascended directly from 30m to the sea surface..... it's likely he'd have had a cardiac arrest, or at best, serious neurological issues. Mr Harrison describes his story as a "miracle", but he also told Reuters: "When I am at home sometimes it feels like the bed I am sleeping in is sinking. I think I'm still in the sea again. I jump up and I scream." Jan Messchendorp, general manager of West African Ventures said in a statement: "We are very grateful for the survival of Mr Harrison. Our thoughts continue to be with the families of the rest of the crew." He added that the search and rescue operation has now been stopped for safety reasons. http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-22888828 |
Since when do they need the president's premission? Can't they get a court order to tear the place down? Or has GEJ become both president and Supremem court judge?
this is a case of terrorism. . . The president's discretion about this, base on information giving to him about the matter is not within judicial considerations. He has the power to overturn such if need be. |
Many think her songs are mostly for mourning and sorrow. . . But i do listen to her when i want sanity and focus in my mind, especially when reading. Never joke with ebudea. |
God help the family in this trying time. |

surugede: What he has not told us yet is how many local staff will cease from being MTN direct staff when the implement their manpower outsourcing policy. When that is done, many MTN personnel would become outsourced mainly to the vendors, that would mean lesser pay.think its on already. |
Good move! Still waiting for the first to do away with outsourcing companies. . .indirect employment. |
poor guyz. . .i just hope they are not going to jail, and have the right to a lawyer. The trick is to plead guilty and get a soft landing. |
These two Oyo hillibillies are back again!? Just when i thought the state is bringing itself to daylight again! Old school politics is a backward style of politics, and these ones are the two llamas left. We don't want politics of the mohicans in my state again! Where developmental progress is just an anomalous. But i want to believe people are wiser now, they dont mind taking their gifts, and voting the right person for the job. More politics >> less govenance. . .that's what these two can offer! Jiggerboos! |
lafile: All they ever think about is ban. Ban this, ban that. Ban okada, ban importation of rice etc. It never occurs to them that the things they are banning came into existence to meet a need. And as long as the need remains, these things will not go away even if you ban them. Think of creating alternatives and make the things you want to ban undesirable and they will just go away. Naija Govt people just think. Oops! Thinking is beyond their capabilities. Lets just Ban.They don ban boko haram, ban ansaru too. . .no plan to create alternatives. |

Apple devices vulnerable to attack via bogus charger 4 June 2013 Last updated at 11:14 Any Apple device running the iOS operating system could be infected by the bogus charger Apple iPhones can be taken over with "alarming" ease using a custom-built charger, security researchers warn. Using the bogus charger, a team from Georgia Institute of Technology managed to infect a phone with a virus in less than aminute. Any device using Apple's iOS operating system would be as vulnerable to infection, claim the trio. More details of their work will be given at the upcoming Black Hat USA hacker conference. Computer control Brief details of the work were given in a summary of the talk the three researchers are scheduled to present at the hackers' get-together. The researchers, Billy Lau, Yeongjin Jang and Chengyu Song, said they were able to get around the many defences in iOSto install any software they wanted on a target device. "All users are affected, as our approach requires neither a jail broken device nor user interaction," they wrote. The team created their malicious charger using a tiny bare-bones computer called a BeagleBoard that costs about £30 ($45). "This hardware was selected to demonstrate the ease with which innocent-looking, malicious USB chargers can be constructed," wrote the researchers in their conference summary. This computer on the Beagle Board communicates with the target computer and carries out the attack that loads malicious software. The researchers say they studied Apple's security systems closely to find a way round its attempts to stop attackers installing rogue programmes and apps. The researchers hid the malicious application they installed by using the same method Apple employs to conceal the location of its own applications on iOS devices. The presentation will also make recommendations about how Apple could close the vulnerability uncovered by the team. http://mobile.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-22764815 |
WoW! This bounty is quite enticing. . . Its high time i visit borno. Someone said is a great place to be this time of the year. |
Maybe some people are even building nuclear arsenals in one secluded place in nigeria. |
aminubako: Rusted weaponsbut no rust impact. You wouldn't want a "rusted" WWII A-bomb be tested in you neighbourhood. Would you? |
babyosisi: Can anybody tell me any community in nigeria that ever gave free land to migrants?one different case in a million. . . |
ouch dude e no dey show for face you know?
not anymore. . .e don they show for face now o! |
dominique: First Benue then Adamawa now Rivers. How exactly do they come up with these figuressince human behavior is no static, and humans transmits HIV. . .figures are susceptible to change, even judging by various measures and indices in each state. South africa is the current champion in the world for now,but another country might beat them to it soon. |
kokoye: If 'accoomadating' does not include cleanliness..you can go to Ibadan.and when last have you been to ibadan? Could this be based on hear-say? |
mankand: Dumb Post. Why not visit Borno?one would need a visa, and perharps, write a will. |
Ngwakwe: If Abuja is not a State in this context, then Lagos is also ruled out from the list.no,that logic does not disqualify lagos as one of the 36 states. And talk about abia as the most accomodating state is unacceptable to me,and i guess many too. It terms of political and economic participation non- indigenes in abia state, especially from the north are delibrately left dormant. And in the area of socio-cultural participation, many times "outsiders" are victims of common pratices among indigenes. |
Afam4eva: Considering all the variables you have listed, i'll have to say ABUJA. But is Abuja a state? If Abuja is not inclusive then Lagos takes the cake.just as i thought. . . But someone was trying to deny this, saying edo state instead. Probably because he did his service there. |
I mean,accomodating in every sphere of involvements,be it political,economic,and socio-cultural participation of non-indigenes? |
I strongly believe in one thing....... Anywhere you see injustice and oppression, fight it because sooner or later, it might come to your front door.... Yes, Aljazera is a Muslim broadcaster but run and edited by mostly westerners. They made an allegation that civilians are being killed... ( in a country where Police kill bus drivers for not giving them N20) and some people call it Muslim Propaganda? ![]() USA diplomat also made the same allegation that civilians are being killed some weeks back. Are they also propagandist? Yes, Borno do harbour terrorist but that doesn't mean everyone in Borno supports Boko Haram, hence that is the more reason we should fight for the cause of the innocent civlians. . Let's remember one thing..... If there should be a problem in the south, it will be these poorly trained soldiers that will be sent to quell the violence. This is the more reason why we should condemn and criticize them when they use excessive force in the north.
And western medias are never bias when reporting on issues in nigeria? Any intelligent person will be left with no choice but to doubt the credence of this video. No denial about civilian casualties is bama, perhaps there was and exageration though. And the US also cannot boast of being 100% careful in ensuring that no civilian casualties in their pakistan, yemen, and afghan campaigns on terrorism. Terrorists will use even their loved ones as sheilds when allowed to. And that what the military is doing. Measures like imposing curfews, warning civilians to stay away from certain places, and staying indoor, are to avoid civilian casualties. Yes,and that's what we've been doing. But the problem is just that the video lacks merit. And we also shouldn't let propaganda derail the soldiers who are willing to put their lives on the line to fight our common enemy. At least, criticizing them should be base on solid findings, and not some cooked-up video. |
Can be very frustrating when correspondent don't have access to places they thought they could get hot, and exclusive news coverage. Desperation can make them rely on independent clips, which are mostly propaganda. The over-commercialized news media creats kind of competition over getting exclusive news, and they don't mind compromising professionalism. Maybe the said "soldier" was even paid. Also, most of these are staged sometimes, just like we had in the libyan and syrian war when rebels use it to gain solidarity and accuse the other party of war crimes. The soldier could be a bh member. |
how is this girl anymore nigerian than the UK "terrorist"?
perharps you're right. . . . But we couldn't deny abdulmutallab was nigerian, but the UK terrorist was just a different case. The guy is briton. |
Maple: Similarly, that doesn't mean Israel and its allies are not working towards undermining anyone with ties to the Syrian or Iranian regimes. Is it a coincidence that Just last week, the EU and US began to debate whether to add Hezbollah to their so-called list of terrorist organization because of its recent support for president Assad? To the US,hezbollah has always been a terrorists organization just like the taliban and hamas;but that is by the way. And,yes we all know how manipulative secret intel agencies like the CIA and mossad are. But are you denying the fact that the armoury uncovered in kano belongs to hezbollah? Perharps, isreali mossad were the one that planted it just to further "manipulate public opinion" on hezbollah? Even though there are arguments that boko haram 'll rather be tied with alqueda, and not hezbollah, these two organizations had in the past carried out cowardly attacks on the west and isreali prone targets in other countries. And what better targets than african countries, where the chances of their operations being successful is high. |
