Now it's somehow believed that this original inhabitants of Canaan along with migrants from neighboring Syria Lebanon and Jordan make up Palestine. It was under the Roman Empire that the name Palestine came about. The Roman Empire was a very bad time for the Israelites, Muslims now claim that Israelites came back to Palestine as they now call Canaan as refugees. That Palestine was the only people that accommodated them when they were chased all over Europe. Isn't it funny. The same Canaan that the Israelites has lived and ruled over for many years. The generation that left Egypt all died in the Wilderness, Moses and Aaron were the only ones that came close to Canaan but neither entered it as they first camped on the hill of Canaan. Moses then led the war over Jericho. The first city they subdued. They shared the land while they still carried on the war to possess the lands led by Joshua after the death of Moses. They crossed over Jordan rivers Tigris and Euphrates into Canaan Proper. Took some part of it, settled with some people instead of killing them as God had instructed. Infact Joshua didn't complete the task and they lived together with the Canaanites for a long time before the time of David. The Philistias from Crete started invading Canaan as well, they Occupied Gaza and seeked to expand further. They engage the Israelites numerous times till David subdued them once and for all by killing Goliath and chased them down to the strips of Gaza. David infact subdued the whole of Canaan and ruled over it king. The problem was that the original inhabitants lived with them. The seven are the Canaanites, Amorites, perizzites, Girgashites, Jebusites, Hittites and Hivites. Canaan extend beyond this cities into parts of Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. David ruled over all of it as it was now known the kingdom of Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem. So also did king Solomon who fought no single war during his reign and built the temple of the Lord in Jerusalem where the whole of Israelites together with the original Canaanites who lived among them worshipped. Esau distanced himself and took wives from among the Canaanites and settled his family in the hill country of Seir, which became known as the land of Edom. This land, east of the Negev desert of Israel, lies in present-day Jordan. Jacob in fear that his brother might kill him went to his grand father's house in Mesopotamia to live with his uncle. It was enroute the Journey that God renewed the convenant He made with His Fathers Abraham and Isaac. It was during the years he lived with his uncle that he married his two wives amidst controversies. Jacob after a while came back to Canaan and settled in schecem. Jacob's name was later changed to Israel after wrestling with an Angel. Jacob's life as a man was filled with struggles, cheated by his Uncle laban, to living in fear that his brother might kill him, to living with two wives he hadn't planned for. His two wives never gave him peace and always fought each other. It was after this Struggle with the Angel that dislocated his hip. This is very significant as it shows that he needed to acknowledge his weakness as man and depend on God. This is how the nation of the Israelites the new nation was established but at this time were yet to possess the 7 cities of Canaan. Jacob now Israel had 12 sons which makes up the 12 tribes of Israel. Joseph was sold into slavery in Egypt who later became a governor. His brothers together with their father Israel went up to Him in Egypt during the famine in Canaan. They stayed in Egypt mainly in Goshen till the new Pharoah who knew them not came and hated them, they decided to head back to Canaan but Pharoah refused and subjected them to slavery instead. Till God appointed Moses to lead the Israelites out. Moses grew right inside the palace, it was all planned by God. He ran away from Egypt after killing the Egyptian that fought with an Israelite. The two Israelites that saw him carry out the act accused him of it and he ran away for years further delaying their days in slavery before finally coming back. He led them out but due to the sins of the Israelites as they Journeyed in the wilderness back to Canaan, God got angry at them and told them none of them will make it back to Canaan but their children instead. They kept compassing around Sinai for Forty Years before they eventually made it back. the Israelites entered Canaan, settling at first in the hill country and in the south. The first city they took was Jericho.The Israelites’ infiltration was opposed by the Canaanites, who continued to hold the stronger cities of the region. In the following century, Canaan suffered further invasion at the hands of the Philistines/Palestines who appear to have come from Crete. They eventually established a coalition of five city-states on the southern coast of Canaan. Under the leadership of King David (10th century BCE), the Israelites were finally able to break the Philistine power and at the same time to vanquish the native Canaanites, taking the city of Jerusalem. Thereafter Canaan became, for all practical purposes, the Land of Israel.
Ironically, Jericho (along with the Gaza Strip) was the first territory given to the Palestinians by Israel as part of the Oslo peace agreement in 1994.
