Are you this slow?
This is a poor attempt at diversion. Stick to topic, or better still open a topic on the above and invite me. You obviously failed to realize it was in response to your own diversionary comment. Are you that retarded to quickly lose memory of what you started? No wonder it has been a nightmare getting you to remember that Ironsi started the business of constitution bastardization. Read your comment which I quoted. Of course you know that the Isaac Boro angle strips you of the moral ground to accuse Gowon of attacking Ojukwu first hence your quick attempt to classify it as irrelevant. It is actually very relevant. |

Biafra couldn't have attacked PH or Calabar as they were both parts of Biafra, heck! The Biafran vice president was from Akwa Ibom likewise many other top officials of Biafra.
Edo and Yolobas were part and parcel of Gowon's Nigeria that first attacked Biafra at Garkem border. Biafra March to Lagos through Midwest to unseat Gowon and Arewa soldiers that stationed there to co ordinate attack on Biafra was justified.
Your Edo was over ran in 2hours! Talk about an empire of blood now reduced to a pathetic weak minority Lol! If not for Banjo that derailed the mission,Gowon would have been ransacked from Lagos. Can't make anything out of your long post. Lol! You seem to be in a lot of pain and it's showing in your uncoordinated incoherent ranting.
But I'm a bit free, so I will school your bitter Edo soul
Igboland is the most peaceful region in Nigeria in both pre and post colonial Nigeria, it has nothing to do with population as Igboland remains densely populated more than other Nigerian parts. It's so because the people had long evolved a republican system of government that does not have place for savage kings hustling to expand their kingdoms by encroaching into their neighbors lands, in attempt at territorial expansionism, and subjugation of neighbors leading to unnecessary wars and depopulation of the region. The people had mastered the delicate act of peaceful resolution of conflicts more than other Nigerians, there are few occasional conflicts like Aglueri-Umuleri, Ezza- Ezillo but they had all been resolved peacefully. For a person from an empire that constantlywent on wars of expansionism and subjugation against her neighbors before she was ransacked by the British, I understand why this is hard for you to understand.
SE is as cosmopolitan is it can be. Edo cannot compete with any state in SE in any aspect of human endeavour, heck! Ogbuefi once used Anioma to trump Edo in many aspects of development. Read about it here: Your backward Edo has nothing on SE.
SE does not equate to Igboland. It's only a part of Igboland. and it's populated enough for its landmass, hence it's high population density.
Here is international bodies crediting Enugu, who knows your cursed Edo? Lol! https://www.nairaland.com/2031155/enugu-makes-history-joins-worlds
Why do you want to hide behind an artificial grouping like SS where Igbos like Okocha, Okonjo, Utomi, Elumelu hold sway to project your backward region? Which Edo man exactly is more influential than those SS Igbos? Edo man why are you hiding behind SS when Igbos in SS are still trumping you there? Lol! https://www.nairaland.com/3539543/delta-rivers-igbos/10#54251199 Yes in School enrollment, both primary, secondary and Tertiary, Igbos( both those in SE and SS) are on top.
Every SE state has a state university and polytechnic and the private university industry here is warming up.
How many does your Edo have? or you want to hide behind SS again? Lol! Yes, Ndiigbo are all over the world, not just Nigeria, doing exploit! You can die if it so much pains you. Those of us at home are also clearly doing better than Edo in all ramifications. Mr. Ignoramus, population density is not the same as high population. A place with a relatively low population could have a very high population density if its landmass is very small. And that is the scenario in the Middle East where their five states combined is not up to Adamawa alone in landmass. Edo State currently has Seven Universities and two polytechnics. Mention a state in the Middle East that comes near that record. Edo has two three existing private universities with 4 more already licenced while the entire Middle East is still warming up according to you. You can hit your Igbo head against the rock if you are so pained of the existence of the SS. I guess illustrious SS sons like AIG Imokhuede, Amaju Pinnick who just won CAF seat, Enahoro who pioneered independence motion, the Imafidons, Ita Giwa, PA Imodu, Sagay, Late Amodu Shuaibu, the owner of Channels TV - are Edo son, Ben Bruce the owner of Sylverbird TV, Dokoesi - another Edo son owning a TV station, and countless others from the SS are igboids? Funny enough the so called Igboids of the SS resent the Igbo identity. How many Igbos own TV stations at all let alone on satellite? Igbos had before independence mastered the art of simple resolution of conflicts as you claim, yet in 1966 they used a bloody coup in trying to resolve a political conflict of mere alliances? You don't think deeply before making claims. |

No where in history had Ndiigbo attempted to annex other people's land or resources.
But we know of a cursed empire now reduced to a minority state whose Oba went about the entire Southern Nigeria, using weapons gotten from Portuguese to harass neighboring tribes, all the way from Western Igboland to Eastern Yolobaland. Until the British reduced her to mere ranting minorities in Nigeria under two days of conquest.

pazienza: No! Ironsi didn't dissolve the regions! Each region still have governors who were answerable to the centre. Each region always had provinces, before Ironsi and they still did when he left!
Gowon is liable for his actions, both him and his hordes of Yoloba and Edo advisers!
Here was Gowon's actions: "On May 27, 1967, Gowon created the 12 states, killed the four regions and handed supreme authority to the central Government. It has been so since".
The repercussions is why the colonial entity failed today. Gowon actions as supported and advised by Yolobas and Edoids killed the colonial entity.
Accept responsibility for your actions, leave Ironsi. and Ojukwu alone. Not taking responsibility for their actions by Arewa-odunistanis and their Edo partners is the reason why Nigeria failed and will continue to rotten. We see this same action this action today when they attempt to blame GEJ for the actions and incompetence of Buhari and APC!
You lots are pathetic. You sound loud but empty. The mere existence of subnational divisions in a country does not automatically translate to a federal structure. Whether a country is federal or unitary is not a matter of the presence or absence of subdivisions but the extent to which the divisions enjoy autonomy free from the centre. UK has subnational divisions yet it is a unitary state because these divisions are highly dependent on the centre. The situation under Ironsi was similar to that. The mere fact that you admit that the military governors under Ironsi were reporting to the centre substantiates the fact that Ironsi imposed Unitarism as the civilian regional premiers did not report to Balewa prior to that time. Here is Ironsi's speech dismantling the regions: Fellow Nigerians, during the past two weeks, I have presided over meeting of the Supreme Military Council and the Central Executive Council at which many important state matters were considered. It is now three months since the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria was handed over to the armed forces. Now that peace has been restored to the troubled areas it is time that the Military Government indicates clearly what it proposes to accomplish before relinquishing power. The removal of one of the obstacles on the way is provided for in the constitution (Suspension and Modification). Decree number 5 1966 which was promulgated by me today and comes into effect at once. The provisions of the decree are intended to remove the last vestiges of the intense regionalism of the recent past, and to produce that cohesion in the governmental structure which is so necessary in achieving and maintaining the paramount objective of the National Military Government and indeed of every true Nigerian, namely; national unity. The highlights of this decree are as follows: 1. The former regions are abolished and Nigeria grouped into a number of territorial areas called provinces. 2. Nigeria ceases to be what has been described as a federation. It now becomes simply The Republic of Nigeria............." From the above is anyone still ready to keep blindly arguing that Ironsi did not abolish the regions, pulled down federalism and replaced it with an overwhelmingly strong centre, thus unitary system, all in the name of seeking a fraudulent "national unity" in line with "Zik's one Nigeria"? As if that was not bad enough, Ironsi went further to unilaterally set up a constitution review panel 100℅ composed of Igbo soldiers and civilians. Yet this Middle Easterner here is blaming Edos for his brother's sin. The sad Middle East and falsehood are Siamese twins. |

The way you hammer on Gowon's creation of states betrays a lack of awareness that even if the civilian regime had not been brought down by the Igbo coup the regions would still have eventually been divided further into smaller ones in entertainment of the various agitations already being made by the minorities of the Northern and Eastern Regions as had just been done for those of the Western Region. The only difference was that the Federalism/Resource control in the constitution back then would have trickled down to whichever new region or state later got created. So Gowon did not commit any crime by creating smaller states out of the regions thus giving the oppressed minorities their long desired voices. |

slurryeye: The reason why Ibadan was the largest city in West Africa was because of its huge landmass. Before Gowon created the original 12 states, Lagos was very small and its landmass was limited to Lagos Island, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Yaba and Ebute Meta. Other areas like Mushin, Agege, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Epe and Shomolu were under the western region. But after the creation of Lagos state by Gowon in 1967, the regions joined the lagos city, and the population of increased significantly. By the end of the civil war in 1970 people from other region in Nigeria started mass migrating to Lagos, then the population of Lagos skyrocketed to what we have now.
Though Lagos was in no comparison to most ancient cities in pre-colonial era, however, Lagos experienced drastic developmental changes between 1850 and 1960 (if you care to know, I can give you the reasons for the drastic changes). By Nigeria independence in 1960, Lagos was the most developed city in Nigeria. So I wonder what you imply by saying Lagos wasn't as developed as any of the regional capital before 1966 The Largest city status of Ibadan was based on population and not landmass. Geographically the largest cities in the world are the most populated ones. If we are to follow your landmass criterion we then can comfortably argue that Benin City, for example, is larger than Lagos since the landmass still available for Benin to occupy is more than 3 times the size of the whole Lagos State. By the same logic Kano is also larger than Lagos. Now that Lagos has overtaken Ibadan to become the Largest City even in the whole Africa does that suggest that Lagos has now got more landmass than Ibadan? The location of the federal capital in Lagos was what even made it smell all that development by the colonialists. Now, by your own admittance, Lagos of that time was far far smaller in Landmass than the Lagos State of today which came into being through Gowon's creation of twelve states - an action which was remotely triggered by Ironsi's Unification Decree. In terms of population, which forms the most potent factor of development, Lagos was nowhere near any of the regional capitals before Ironsi committed his blunder. It was the centralization of power and revenue purse in Lagos by Ironsi that stunted the growth of all other regional capitals to to the undue advantage of Lagos, hence Lagos soon overtook them population wise and then on all other fronts. |

Now tell me any regional capital that has more infrastructure than Lagos before 1966. Lemme break it down for you one by one.
Educational Institution: By 1888 when no other city or town in what is now called Nigeria can boast of one secondary school, Lagos has 4 secondary schools namely CMS grammar school, Lagos Baptist Academy, Methodist Boys high school and Methodist girls high school. Fast forward to 1950 when very few cities have up to 3 secondary schools, Lagos had over 12 secondary school and one higher institution Yaba College of Technology established in 1947. The same Yabatech students became the founding students of the first university in Nigeria, University of Ibadan.
Residential settlement: By 1930s when most regions in Nigeria still have houses made up of mud houses and thatched houses, Ikoyi has developed into one of the most upscale residential area in Africa. The same Ikoyi is still remain one of the most upscale area in West Africa if not the whole Africa till date. By 1950s, areas in Lagos mainland like Yaba and Ebute meta has become developed a mix of residential and commercial activities while Lagos Island with broad street and Marina has become the commercial backbone and lifeline of Nigeria. Victoria Island at the same time represent affluence which is what it is till date.
Roads and Bridges: Before 1960, almost all the roads in what was then Lagos colony were tarred. Carter bridge the first vehicular bridge in Nigeria was built in 1901
Seaport and Airport: the construction of deep water berth with depth of about 550 meters started in 1921, the Ikeja airport which later became Murtala Muhammed airport was built during the world war II. By the time Nigeria gained independence in 1960, Lagos has a functional airport and seaport
Architectural structures: No urban development will be complete without outstanding architectural structures. Starting from first storey building completed in Badagry in 1845 to race course in 1920s, to Ikoyi club in 1930s, to St. George hall completed in 1934, to holy cross cathedral dedicated on 1950s. Lagos has developed into the most urbanized city in Nigeria before 1960
Now tell me with evidences any of the regional capital as developed as one quarter of Lagos before Aguiyi Ironsi unification decree in 1966. Very funny response so far. You have not answered my question as to why Ibadan remained the largest city in West Africa and not Lagos. Where was Lagos compared with the ancient cities of Ibadan, Benin, etc before colonization? |

Choke on it: "On May 27, 1967, Gowon created the 12 states, killed the four regions and handed supreme authority to the central Government. It has been so since". Unfortunately you refused to address the poser as to the fact that Ironsi set the precedent which Gowon only copied. |

Who promulgated the Decree 34 in the first instance and which Gowon had to abolish in restoration of the federal system? |

2016v2017: Igbos not fools, if they secede from Nigeria, I'll apply for their visa and relocate - Idris Abubakar, Dakata of Kano
I think and believe in Nigeria today, Igbos love themselves more than every other tribe.. If you see any Igbo rich business man, listen to his story how he got to where he is today, he will always start with, I was a poor boy at home with my parents when my uncle, brother, or relation took me and brought me to the city to learn trade with him and finally settled me to start my own.
IGBOS ARE RARE.
1] You will see one Igbo man who has trained and settled more than 100 young men and all are doing well in their businesses.
2] It is only Igbo man that I have seen who would train a child that is not his in schools up to the university level.
3] Only an Igbo man would send a relation abroad to go and find means to survive without minding how much it cost him.
4] Every Igbo man want his brother to live comfortably and don’t have to rely on others.
5] Igbo man would rather teach you how to catch a fish than to give you already caught fish.
6] When an Igbo man marries, he takes good care of his wife and children plus his wife’s relations unlike the other tribes that dont respect their wives.
7] My sister Murna has always said that she would love to marry an Igbo man because they know how to take good care of their wives and those related to her.
8] Igbo man, no matter what and where he maybe, would always have home at heart and wherever they see their people, they make themselves known.
9] Wherever they are, they would surely have Igbo meetings and gatherings of their local governments people.
10] Igbo man would go to meetings every Sunday where they meet with their people.
I wonder how anyone could say that Igbos don’t love themselves, In fact we are jealous of Igbo people for how united and together they come all the time. When something happen to one of them, they would come together and assist. I have seen people from other tribes buried here when they died, but when an Igbo die here they must gather and take the body home in solidarity.
Things Igbo people do together I have never seen in other tribes in Nigeria. An Hausa or Yoruba rich man would never do anything to help you, they rather be giving you 20 Naira every time they see you that is after you must greeted them tire.
If Biafra goes away from Nigeria, I will be the first to apply for their visa, I want stay with them very intelligent people, they know how to make things happen. – Idris Abubakar, (The Dakata of Kano) Hmmmm! Northerners and their deceitful utterances. This Idris Abubakar Dantata knew all this beautiful attributes of Igbos but in this speech of his he refused to spare a line in condemnation of his own brother Ahmadu Bello who constantly openly demonized Igbos and also his own brothers who always and repeatedly murdered Igbos (the wonderful people by his own judgement) in large numbers over the years from 1945. This should be the all-time award winning speech of political correctness. |

Stop blaming innocent Ironsi for Gowon actions which the entire Arewa-oduanistani country supported him on. I can see you are very clever on your failure to mention that Ironsi opened Gowon's eyes to tampering with the constitution through his own Unification Decree. Adam committed less than 0.000000000000001% of the sins ever committed in this world yet he is called the father of sin because he pioneered sin and opened the eyes of man to the "sweetness" of sin. Ironsi is the father of the injustice, the originator of the culture of unilateral alteration of the constitution according to individual whims and caprices, the man who laid the foundation for the social and economic oppression in Nigeria. Gowon, OBJ, IBB, Buhari, Abacha, etc knew nothing of military participation in politics but Ironsi opened their eyes to it and from him they all learnt that our constitution, though a we the people document, was not sacred after all and thus could be mutilated at will with impunity. Ironsi is the political Adam of Nigeria and while he pioneered the evil precedent he was supported by Alaigbo. Recall that immediately Ironsi announced his Unification Decree there were spontaneous breakouts of riot or at least messages of disapproval against it from every region except in his own home Eastern Region. Why? Your guess is as good as mine. |

slurryeye: Did you just say Lagos is not as developed as any regional capital before 1966? Mention any of the regional capital as developed as Lagos before independence. I know you don't like Lagos but just don't say what you don't know So in your world development means only beautiful buildings which were even equally present in all other regional capitals? You never heard that Ibadan was the Largest city in West Africa before Lagos later overtook it courtesy of overconcentration of power and redirection of revenue there through the Unification Decree of Ironsi? |

nkemjacob2: where re other states wen lagos was topping all the list sometin is wrong with ur country Lagos was initially not so privileged. The dismantling of our federalism in the first republic led to the overconcentration of the economy on Lagos being the centre to which all revenues became directed at the death of federalism/resource control in 1966. |

Unak78: I think he's trying to say that there aren't 10 developed local areas or even one outside of Lagos. Debatable, however it bothers me that almost all current investment, including private investment, is directed towards Lagos when the country needs more regional economic hubs. Part of the reason that Lagos is overrun and overpopulated is this mentality. If more investment could be directed towards Aba, Port Harcourt, Kaduna, Maiduguri, Jos, Ibadan etc you would see more growth across the country and fewer people running to one single city. Some of this is out of anyone's hands since you cannot force private investors to go where they don't see a return on investment. But you can invest government funds in different regions in order to make those regions more attractive so that the private sector can finish the job. Look at what China did by with their regional economic zones. It could be said that there were only three economic hubs in that country twenty years ago and two of them weren't even technically part of China. Now Hong Kong will have to soon fight just to remain among China's top ten investment destinations. I like the project in Eko Atlantic, for example, but a similar project elsewhere would help Nigeria more.
At any rate, I'm glad that the OP is proud of his state, but how about wishing for the country's growth, the uplifting of a nation that can be an example for all of Africa. It would not only aid Nigeria, but ease the congestion in Lagos as well. Only a return to fiscal federalism/resource control will guarantee the decongestion of Lagos and Abuja as these two cities were not as developed as any of the regional capitals before Ironsi came with his wicked and self-serving Unification Decree. |

Osho no fine before naw All we want from him is good governance. Na so una value governance by fine people when una go vote for the combination of OBJ and Atiku for 1999? Abi una hear say OBJ and Atiku been win beauty pageant before 1999? Who handsomeness don epp sef? What is special about being fine even? That was how one guy was arguing against the right of secession in Nigeria and everyone thought he had good reasons until he was asked to give his reasons and he responded that if any part of Nigeria should secede the map will no longer be fine as if that is more important than the injustice and oppression in the land. kingzizzy: I dont want to dwell on Adaka Boro, the man wanted to take his Ijaw ethnic group out Nigeria, thats his business. Im not Ijaw.
In terms of secession in Nigeria. I still hold that Nigeria was the creation of the British. Like any marriage, either spouse can seek divorce and leave at any time. I do not know anyone in the world who supports 'forced marriage'. Any of the ethnic groups who were forced into Lugard colonial project reserve the right to opt out at any time, either individually or collectively.
In the case of marriage, this is a union of two people who mutually agreed and signed a legal document to be together, yet they have right of divorce.
In the case of Nigeria, nobody agreed to come together, nobody agreed to be a 'Nigerian' and nobody ever willingly gave up their sovereignty. Constitutional conferences held since the 50's up until the recent one held in 2014 were all about establishing the parameters of being together. There has never been any formal agreement where the various ethnic groups formally came together and willingly agreed to give up their sovereignty and name to Nigeria.
Because of this, Nigeria still remains a colonial figment that has no legitimacy same as it had no legitimacy when Lugard created it in 1914.
A sovereign National conference or a referendum is long over due.
Saying that the constitution does not recognise secession or referendum is irrelevant. The sovereignty of the people is more important than the constitution.
The question to be asked is, did those currently agitating to secede from Nigeria enter at any time, any formal agreement to give up their sovereignty and become Nigerians? If yes, when and where did this happen?
If no, then Nigeria is holding them captive and Ojukwu was right to secede with his people. In marriages where divorce is permitted, the rules and procedure for divorce are spelt out from the beginning and not after the wedding has been done and the marriage in force. In the case of Nigeria all other tribes wanted the allowance, terms and procedures for divorce to be spelt out and agreed upon as binding before wedding ceremony came on October 1 1960, but Igbos refused and insisted that they were sure the marriage was going be blissful despite the preponderance of evidence to the contrary, thus they did not allow us agree to divorce in case of failure of the marriage. So the marriage was contracted with the agreement that none of the partners must later mention divorce in future. As if that was not bad enough the same Igbos, six years later, added a new law that the mention of divorce was punishable by death. But just a year later the same Igbos who insisted that it was all going to be a bed of roses and therefore prevented the inclusion of divorce and it's procedure in the agreement began asking for divorce, and rather than first apologizing for having misled and deceived others with their initial false hopes followed by a passionate plea that the agreement be reviewed to include divorce by consent, they chose to just bamboozle everyone again into accepting their new thought. That was arrogance which no one tolerates. Are we at the mercy of their whims and caprices? Do they have the monopoly of tossing others around? The point being made is not that a union is indissoluble but that as of now in Nigeria it is practically impossible for any tribe to get out either through constitutional review or even violently due to the elitist stranglehold on the polity for their own personal interest. And that the Igbos who laid the foundation for this difficulty in getting out are the very ones pointing accusing fingers. How on earth did a people believe that a country of over 400 tribes with different and sometimes antagonizing cultures would be a bed of roses? Funny enough they were led into that belief by an anthropologist who should have known better by virtue of his profession. |
