How Does the Biological Clock Work? What You Were Born With

women are born with all the eggs they are ever going to have, and they don’t make any new eggs during their lifetime. Women are born with approximately two million eggs in their ovaries, but about eleven thousands of them die every month prior to puberty. As a teenager, a woman has only three hundred thousand to four hundred thousand remaining eggs, and from that point on, approximately one thousand eggs are destined to die each month.

This phenomenon is completely independent of any hormone production, birth control pills, pregnancies, nutritional supplements, or even health or lifestyle. Nothing stops this inexorable death of approximately one thousand eggs every month regardless of ovulation, ovarian inhibition, or stimulation. Whenever the woman runs out of her supply of eggs, the ovaries cease to make estrogen, and she goes through menopause. Despite a lot of journalistic hype, there is no similar phenomenon in men. Men continue to make sperm and testosterone at virtually the same rates, with only a very modest diminution as they age.


Many population studies have demonstrated over several decades that the average fertile woman becomes infertile by age forty or earlier, and undergoes menopause by age fifty. The mean age of the end of female fertility (according to all the early population studies of fertile women) precedes menopause by about ten to thirteen years. The end of fertility for an otherwise normal, fertile woman, and the age of the onset of menopause, correlates strictly with the decline in the number of eggs remaining in her ovary.

The average female life expectancy in the Western world is currently about eighty-four, whereas in 1900, the average life expectancy was fifty, and in 1850, it was only forty-two years of age. Meanwhile, the average age at which young girls start menstruating in the modern world has decreased from age thirteen or fourteen to age ten or eleven. Neither the overall life expectancy, nor the age of menarche (the beginning of menstruation) has any effect on the average age of menopause.

In fact, the average age of menopause in almost every population studied over any period of time and in any era has remained constant at around fifty. Although some women go through menopause in their twenties (because of POF, i.e., premature ovarian failure) and some go into menopause in their late fifties, the timing does not appear to depend upon any specific element in their lives other than the number of eggs with which they were endowed at birth.

It is this wide variation in endowment of eggs from woman to woman that will determine whether you will lose your fertility early (late twenties or early thirties), or whether you’ll be one of the lucky women who is able to have children into her mid- or even late forties. To recap, the average woman will have three hundred thousand to four hundred thousand eggs at the time of puberty.

An average of one thousand will die every month, and only one of those thousand every month is destined to ovulate. By age thirty-seven, the average woman will be down to only about twenty-five thousand remaining eggs. When only twenty-five thousand eggs remain in the ovaries, menopause will occur in approximately thirteen years. Thus, the average woman begins to become infertile by age thirty-seven or earlier, when her ovarian reserve goes down to about twenty-five thousand eggs, and at age fifty, she will go through menopause. But there are wide variations from this average. What you need to know, in order to plan your entire life, is where you fit on that curve (see fig3. )

This is going to be a bit lengthy, but try to read to the end.

Yeah! It all started last year when I had to resign from a school where I was working, due to some unruly behaviour of the management which I could no longer bear. I resigned into nothing, without backup, without a single savings but bank debt (RenMoney) but today, I have testimonies.

After the resignation, I concentrated on my PPs (fellow teachers will know what this means) and personal development. I would stay at home in the morning to study various materials online (thanks to mtn simple server) and go for my PPs in the evening. In November, God opened amazing doors of high paying PPs for me that i realised NGN350,000 at the end of the month. Then, I quickly started what I couldn't do while working in the land of slavery. I joined a co-operative society so I don't eat all and started meeting some family financial obligations. This flow continued until March when due to Nigeria economic recess, some parents asked me to stop. I felt bad and it was as if i would be back to square one. However, it wasn't so. A colleague called to connect me to a very rich couple who were computer illiterate. In fact, they have one of the leading supermarkets here in Lagos. They've searched for someone who would be coming to teach them in the morning, 2 hours and 3 times a week without finding. I was signed up and it was an experience I will never forget! I trained them for two months and what they paid me each month was NGN10,000 lesser than what my salary was in the land of slavery! Well, the training came to an end and we had to stop. Meanwhile, before I met them, I signed up with a school, teaching ICT on part-time basis. When they (the couple) came on board, I left the school. While I was teaching them, I signed up with another school on part time basis to prepare their year 11 students for ICT IGCSE Edexcel variant. I would go to the school 2 times in a week, go for the computer training 3 times (in the morning) and my PPs in the evening. You can imagine what I was raking in on part time! Though it was stressful, but I enjoyed the flow of money.

So, when I left these wonderful couple, I had a school and 3 PPs and the income reduced to 200,000 (excluding transport). It started becoming challenging health wisely so I asked God to help me know what to do for it was obvious I couldn't continue. Then, I started submitting my cvs in schools. In June, 5 big schools called me for interview and surprisingly, there was no clash of dates (God's factor). The most surprising thing was that it was two years ago (2014) when I submitted my cvs to two of them. To cut the story short, I went and got appointment with two of the schools. One is even with accommodation, (two bed with a/c). I'm resuming with them on 1st of September.

With what happened to me within this one year, I learnt some lessons which I want to share with you:
1. Rather than grumbling, quit working in a place where you know for sure you are not valued. However, don't be too hasty in doing this. Think and pray.
2. Be hopeful. They can still call you where your CVs are.
3. Don't waste time make use of every resource available in developing yourself. I used Mtn simple server judiciously. MTN, you have a loyal customer in me.
4. Be prayerful. God is real! There's an unseen but a greater force somewhere that controls the affairs of men.

France outlaws paying for sex

French MPs have passed a law that makes it illegal to pay for sex and imposes fines of up to €3,750 (£3,027, $4,274) for those buying sexual acts.
Those convicted would also have to attend classes to learn about the conditions faced by prostitutes.
It has taken more than two years to pass the controversial legislation because of differences between the two houses of parliament over the issue.
Some sex workers protested against the law during the final debate.
The demonstrators outside parliament in Paris, numbering about 60, carried banners and placards one of which read: "Don't liberate me, I'll take care of myself", the AFP news agency reports.
Members of the Strass sex workers' union say it will affect the livelihoods of prostitutes, estimated to number between 30,000 and 40,000.
But supporters of the law have said it will help fight trafficking networks.

Sweden was the first country to criminalize those who pay for sex rather than the prostitutes.
Swedish authorities say the number of women on the streets in the prostitution area in Stockholm has fallen since the legislation was introduced.
