homerac7: these hue and cry over 3MB is getting more stewpid as d days go bye. I have been hearing all sort of silly cries of "abnormalities" with 3MB but never has anybody given a sane and educated reason. Today, a pepper seller will tell u dt d bridge is shaking, tomorrow a dog-catcher will tell tales of how d bridge was vibrating "dangerously", next a lawyer will talk about a bolt that is broken somewhere, bla bla bla..........

Nobody who is an expert has ever said that the bridge is faulty for any reason. by the way, how many bridges in Nigeria is in same type with 3MB? ...so why would u expect that it should b rigid like the other shorter bridges? If the vibration is the reasons u think it is abnormal? then u r right...it is normal for it to vibrate more because of its "abnormal" length. if it were to b as rigid as many of u expect, then that will b very abnormal because it will collapse if only a bicycle rides over it!!! if MUST vibrate more in order not to crmble under its own sheer weight when a rolling load is on it, otherwise there will be serious load imbalance which by its sheer size cant tolerate, hence catastrophic failure.

Pls if u have any other reasons y u think it is faulty, bring it up and i will like a thread be opened where structural engineers will come up and educate the people correctly. Not just silly sayings gathetred from pepper sellers, dog-catchers, lawyers and ice cream hawkers.
Ol boy, I agree with you on the vibration thing, that is only normal. I do not even know if there was anything wrong with it in the first place. What I know FOR SURE - is that NOTHING tangible was done on that bridge to warrant the closure for four months. . . that was just corruption. That's my point.

Well haven read Segun Adeniyi's excellent "Power, Politics and Death", I can only say that there is a way to criticize the dead, which Adeniyi did elegantly and decently, and there is a way not to do so. From the excerpts i see of El Rufai's on Yaradua (if true), then its borderline indecent to speak about a dead man that way - - - he drank, he smoked, he slept, he was lazy, etc - - - I do not doubt that Adeniyi may have had such things to say about many people in Government, but he kept his writing to the things that mattered officially.

In bad taste, I would say.

Now, haven said that, it would be stretching all credulity, to believe that El Rufai could brazenly lie against them all and say things that never happened.

While the work was on, I said repeatedly that NOTHING was being done on that Bridge, that it was a smokescreen for a billion naira contract, and peeps said I was just "hating" the administration.

I do not need any independent report to tell me what I already observed with my eyes. NOTHING was done on that Bridge and I know that for a fact. The painful thing is the fact that a govt can be willing to punish a population of some 15 million for FOUR whole months in order to window dress a critical road such as the 3rd mainland especially after the same was done just about four years ago or so. If the work was done properly then, it should take a decade or two before such comprehensive work is required again. But watch it. . . very soon we will have another few months of closure for "maintenance" again. . .

Logicboy03: See the liar?

Who drew an imaginary line? Mathematics and Philosophy are taught as separate fields in schools. That is not imaginary. I also acknowledge that they intersect because of the logic equations- there is a philosophy of maths. Very sound argument to show that they are separate but intersecting.

Now, you claim that maths is a subset of philosophy with no evidence or logical argument. How is your subset not an imaginary line?

Anonyism smiley
Ol boy there is no point arguing this point with you. It is unlikely to be worthwhile.

thehomer: Question my confidence in what way? We know that billions of years ago, the universe couldn't have supported life because it was too hot and dense. Today, we know that it does support life. This tells me that billions of years ago, there was no pre-existing life but there was matter and life consists of this matter. It in fact consists of the most common elements in the universe so I still don't see what you think is supposed to question my confidence. Did Louis Pasteur know about the Big Bang?

It wasn't sudden. If anyone is trying to introduce magic, it would be you theists who propose some magical entity that is both outside and inside the universe who may or may not be doing anything that decided to magically create life.

Actually, on the cosmic scale, you're irrelevant but at the regular human scale, you're relevant. The problem is that theists claim that humans are relevant both at the cosmic scale and at the human scale. What more are you talking about? If you want to say God, just come out and do so.

So because you find the universe strange you think a God must have been involved? This is just an argument from incredulity and it is fallacious.
I will respond later to this posts as I am taking a dump right now. However please note that I have added a paragraph to my post above.

Note also that I did not say the universe was strange, I said that reality is strange. Different statements please. I will elaborate on that in another thread but its just my subjective perception and maybe I am the strange one.
Christianity Etc › Re: An Interview Of Richard Dawkins By Ben Stein by DeepSight(m):
thehomer: A senseless response once you realize that there was a time that this universe couldn't have supported life. Even if you wish to claim "god did it", he had to have done it using non-living materials.
And that process or mechanism by which non living matter becomes living, is still and forever unknown to you, to Darwin and to Dawkins - not a crime of course, but still remains a fact which questions your confidence that life must not have come from pre-existing life. A principle, which by the way, and as you know, was proven by the french scientist Loius Pasteur.

On the contrary, no such thing can be said for your own abracadabra belief in which non living things suddenly, magically and purposelessly become living. And evolve into intelligent sentient beings to boot.

plaetton: There is no way they can conceptualize the bolded. Since they believe that the universe is 6000yrs old.

If the universe is 6000yrs old, then life on earth only began less than a second ago, and with population growth and its attendant environmental degradations and eventual collapse, there are few reasons to believe that the earth is capable of supporting life for the next 6000 yrs, or another 1 second in the celestial clock.
What has this purposefully designed universe been doing before our arrival, and most importantly , what will it be doing after we may have consumed ourselves to extinction, right after our 2 seconds of celestial existence?
And that very same fact; to wit: our smallness in time and space: means that we are in no position to claim to be either relevant (theists position) or irrelevant (atheists position). The same way that the vastness of time and the universe does not permit the theist to conclude that the universe is all about him, is the exact same way that that same vastness must restrain the atheist from concluding that there is not more beyond what we can see or know or even that the theist may not be right after all.

This just the way that a single cell in the human body can not know, and can NEVER know its relevance or irrelevance to the entire body because the entire structure is far too large for it to ever see or apprehend its true place in the super-structure. I dont know if you are familiar with the Raelian suggestion that the entire universe is just a micro-organism within the body of a larger being, and that larger being is just a micro cell within another larger being and so on into infinity in both directions. I have not said that it is true and it is a question that can NEVER be answered in all eternity, but it is food for thought, which means that you would be s.illy to conclude definitely that humans are irrelevant in the grand scheme. You cannot know that we are irrelevant just as the theist cannot know that we are relevant.

As for me, my own conclusion is that everything is relevant one way or the other. Such would square with science and logic as nature abhors a vacuum and logic does not contain chasms.

As far as I am concerned, although I have never uttered it until now, one of the strongest arguments in favour of my belief in the existence of God, is just how f.ucking strange reality and the experience of reality is. I will do a thread on that strangeness soon.

^^^ Are there people who go about butchering atheists? Is it not the case that they go about butchering people of faith - of a counter-faith - and even so, mostly with political reasons?

You did not answer my question as to if female rights would be helped by making mislims atheistic in those societies. Do you not see the fact that those rights are a cultural issue?

Do you think a Jihadist that is "converted" to atheism would lose his ideas about honour killing for the dignity of his family?

Would he cease to see his women as property to be protected? I gave you the analogy of 'atheistic' lions for heavens sake. Need I write a thesis before you get the point? This is EVIDENTLY a cultural issue. God's existence does not impact on it.

Seriously, no one goes around harming people for non belief in God. They actually go around harming people for believing in God differently. That is what history and current affairs show us.

thehomer: Why? He isn't a cosmologist and he wasn't writing a scientific paper.
Because the crux of the matter is the cause of the universe.

Nevertheless i concede that you have made a good point here: namely: his freedom to discuss and write about whatever he pleases.

Sure. Until you encounter people who endanger their lives and that of others around them for the sake of these said myths. Whether you like it or not, some people take those stories more seriously than you do.
Nobody does this.

I am tempted to leave the statement at that in order to mimic your brief and taciturn style, but just to save myself the bother of another response after you traditionally respond with probably three words ("who says so" or the like) - Let me just clarify that nobody goes about endangering other peoples lives on account of mere belief in a creator or non belief in a creator.

They go about endangering lives on account of the spiced up versions of what God entails - namely - their religions.

So you are speaking to religion, and not to God - and most of all - you are not speaking to the question of cosmological causality which is the question Dawkins should be addressing himself to as a scientist.

Because so far in his society, Zeus hasn't been used as a tool for harm neither has he been cited as a reason for some dangerous action or ignorance.
Is his concern about the harm that Christianity or Islam does? If so, secular society is dealing with that - viz: Womens rights in Islamic Societies is being fought for by the International Community in many ways. Would disproving the existence of God aid that fight, please answer me specifically on this cardinal question?

That question, if you absorb it, shows the point: namely: if he was really fighting the excesses of religion, he would address secular rights and not the existence of God, because proving or disproving the existence of God will not address those secular moral issues which you point out, no?

This alone shows that his issue is in fact not the moral or ethical questions of religious practice; but rather the cosmological and philosophical question of the existence of God, ab initio - and therefore should be addressed as such!

Haba, thehomer, I don try. I dont think I have been as succinct as this ever on this forum, as such I hope you see the point!

Are Zeus's Temples forcing millions to reject evolution and science or is it churches and mosques that hate on evolution/science?
You miss the point, Sir R.E.R.

If Zeus exists, it is irrelevant to the cosmological or philosophical debater what his followers do or do not do. The question is whether such an entity exists or not.

That is what an interested scientist should address himself to.

Not myths and fancies.

That would be just as ridiculous as spending your career arguing against the existence of Santa Claus and his retinue.

A serious scientist, if interested in the issue at all, cannot do such: he can only approach the question from a cosmological and philosophical point of view. Obsessing with Myths like Yahweh is as bad as trying to disprove Santa Claus.

thehomer: And you're rapidly ascending to being detached from reality. If you actually knew anything about determining probability, you'll know that if an event has occurred, then its probability is one. We've been through this before too but you refused to learn from that exchange. If you haven't corrected the sorts of errors you made then, what makes you think that I need something "original" to show you the error of your thoughts?

I can understand that you're bitter about being unable to counter anything I've said but saying that they're things I read elsewhere isn't an insult or a criticism of what I've written here.

That your thought is "original" doesn't make it true and having your type of "original thought" except maybe in composing literature for pleasure isn't really useful especially when they've been shown to be wrong decades ago. What you need to realize is that one doesn't need the "unoriginal thought" you seem to be criticizing to respond reasonably to you. In fact, you won't be having these wrong "original thoughts" in the first place if put the effort into understanding what we've found out so far.

Be happy with your "original thought". I'm sure there was once a time when Bozo the clown was considered original.
His interest as a scientist should be cosmological.

plaetton: And if I may add, Deepsight's notion that a simple belief in creator is harmless seems to ignore all tragedies of human history. There is no such thing as a simple belief in a creator. A belief in a creator brings many many complications and chaos to human interactions and human life, in general.
Again, taking a cursory look at history, we find that humans do not kill or war over observable phenomena, such as moon phases, the planets and stars, sun cycles, gravity, sunshine and rain, atoms, protons, etc.

On the other hand, humans have an inclination to kill and war over man-made things like god, religion , economic and political ideologies.

What I am trying to say, is that if god were self-evident, human life would have been far less complicated than it has been.
The belief in god is a source of unending complications and conflict to human simply because it is a projection of the human mind or psyche, with all the contradictions therein.
If you were being realistic, you would realize that a belief in a creator actually also does a lot of good to a lot of people. Surely you cannot deny that.

In fact, I would go so far as to add that the belief in a creator alone, does no harm: it is the addittional ingredients that cause differnces which lead to wars and fatalities: i.e: The creator is Jewish, the creator is a man, the creator was never a man, the creator is a trinity, the creator demands sacrifice, etc ad infinitum.

Aside these 'spices and ingredients' the mere belief alone that the world is created has never done any one any harm.

And it is that strict point of creation that a biologist like Dawkins should be addressing.

A scientist, such as Dawkins, should not be concerned with religious notions of God at all. His argument should be against the cosmological and philosophical question of causation. Period.
Christianity Etc › Re: An Interview Of Richard Dawkins By Ben Stein by DeepSight(m): 6:51pm On Feb 04, 2013
thehomer: Well you're wrong about that. In the clip under discussion, he read what he wrote about the Christian God in the God Delusion. Do you think that quote had anything to say about religion? Have you read the God Delusion or a fair review of what it contains? If you had, you'll realize that he tried to show that at least the Abrahamic Gods didn't exist and that even if they did, they would be tyrants and religions based on them would be expected to be tyrannical.

To you it is harmless but to those who are denied proper education, are beaten or killed due to religious ideas, it is harmful.
Well you know the issue remains the existence of God; and not religious biases. Especially as a scientist, his own take can and must remain on the logicality of the existence of God as propounded in cosmological and philosophical terms. Going further to Yahweh, Krishna, Allah, or other such, belittles and renders redundant the discussion. Surely you know that?

Please can you tell me what concept of con artist you're using? I ask because anyone who understands the language and buys the book most likely knows what to expect. You go ahead and write your controversial book but before you do, please tell us why writing on religion is controversial.

Really? Are you aware that because of religion, people have been doing and are doing stupid and dangerous things that affect not only themselves but others around them? On Dawkins advancing his professional calling, why don't you actually take a look at his accomplishments on Wikipedia. Seriously, people like you sometimes make me wonder what you think scientists and education are for. You seem to think that scientists should simply shut up and work in their labs as if they're not a part of the society they live in or that they may have views that they may wish to express.

You cannot deny that Dawkins and co are a rallying point today for many atheists - even if other atheists do not look to them as thought leaders.

It is therefore apt to point out how s.illy the ideas of such a rallying point figure are. Just the same way we point out how silly the ideas of religious leaders are.

Everyday, especially sunday, millions of pastors, priests and con-artists of every color and shade mount the podiums and televisions screens to scream "god did this, god did that, god loves this, god hates this",and other false crap.
This has been going on unchallanged for the past 2000 yrs.

Then one man, among a very few, writes a book, goes on public podiums to challange this standard idea that god did this or did that, then suddenly, every one goes ballistic. Then he is called stupid, dunce, intolerant and all manners derogatory names: Just for bravely challanging an old idea.

I find it funny and hypocitical that you somehow expect his reasoning be to perfect and flawless and his scientific knowledge to be perfect and absolute , while same is not required for pastors and priests.

I doubt that dawkins has ever converted any theists to atheism. However, in whatever small way, Dawkins and others like him only help to remind us to come to terms and accept the doubts that we harbor in the deepest part of our minds, irrespective of the daily and incessant blabberings of priests, pastors and imams.

Religion and the belief in god is a mental conditioning. It is going on in millions of locations worldwide right now. It takes a lot of mental courage to break free and challange this conditioning.
As you know, I regard most Pastors and Priests to be as s.illy and deceitful as Dawkins: as such; I am not discriminating here.

The reasons that I state him to be a dunce are well documented: incredibly fallacious arguments that a 2 year old would not make.

The reasons I hold atheists who refer to his arguments - as dunces - is the fact that they cannot see for themselves and reason out their own positions in the same way as applies to religionists to also commit the same id.iocy.

Read the thread provided and show what arguments are wrong. If you cannot do that, or perhaps you don't have the time, then you cannot expect me to write all over again here. That will "expose" my joblessness.

As to Logicboy, I hope, from everything in this thread, you can now see why I describe Dawkins (and everyone else who regards him as intelligent) to be a dunce. It is normal that dunces should follow dunces. Birds of a feather flock together. That is why Pentecostal dunces also follow Pastor Dunces. It is the very same thing.

There is one aspect in which I would agree that he is smart though. Namely as a con-man intent on making money. This is no different from what a writer like Dan Brown does. If you really want to make money from writing, as a smart person, all you need to do is write something controversial. Best of all, hit out at what people hold sacred, and you become an instant hit, from the controversy generated. That is very clever. Dan Brown, Salman Rushdie, Richard Dawkins. All the same, vey old, very well known strategies of Con-Artists and those committed to sharp practices. As a business, it is excellent. I might consider writing something repugnantly controversial and s.illy myself. Makes good bucks, in a repugnant and s.illy world.

Because other than that, it is very curious as to why a non-religious Biologist would bother himself to write a book about religious beliefs, and spend great energy and time on such religious fancies and myths. . .particularly when his object of attack is not the morals at issue but the existence of a creator - a notion which whether true or false; is harmless - - - when he should rather be more busy advancing his professional calling in the lab and in the field - doing biological research for the progress of humanity.

Ah; give me the dollars. . .
