SportsOliseh Tipped For Eaglets Job by DeepZone(op): 2:18am On Sep 24, 2008
Oliseh tipped for Eaglets job
•As Dike denies blaming Gimba, NFF for failure in Cotonou
09.23.2008

Tuesday, September 23, 2008

Indications are rife that former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh is on line to replace yet to be sacked Golden Eaglets head coach, Alphonsus Dike at the Under-17 team.

An impeccable source told KickOffNigeria.com that applications have started pouring in for the job that was not vacant yet until the NFF Board meets on Thursday but the choice of Oliseh has been widely backed even when the player has not been contacted yet.

“You know that Oliseh has a pedigree as a player and he commands almost the same clout and respect Samson Siasia enjoys in football business. Although making a choice of who will replace Dike could be said to be too early for discussion.

“The NFF are not taking chances with time and the leadership is already brainstorming on who takes over the team to prepare them for the Under-17 World Cup that Nigeria is hosting,” our source said.

“We also believe that Oliseh has the clout to arrange quality international friendly matches and youth tournaments within the possible shortest time that could help the team preparations since we don’t have the privilege of playing in the African Youth tournament,” the source who spoke on condition of anonymity disclosed to KickOffNigeria.com.

KickOffNigeria.com also discovered that names like Bayelsa United’s head coach, Monday Odigwe; Gbenga Ogunbote of Gateway and Lemmy Isa are being considered to assist Oliseh.

Meanwhile, Head Coach of the National U-17 Men’s Team, Mr Alphonsus Dike cried out at the weekend against the volume of words being written about him in the press, specifically lambasting a publication in which he was quoted to have blamed the Honourable Minister and some Members of the Executive Committee of the NFF for imposing players on him.

The former Iwuanyanwu, Rangers and Enyimba FC tactician was categorical that he never granted interview to anyone, anywhere since the unfortunate crash of his team from the African U-17 Championship qualifiers, and challenged the reporter of a national sports paper which quoted him to produce the tape of the interview.

“This is sheer wickedness. I never at anytime spoke to this reporter, neither have I spoken to any reporter since my team lost to Benin Republic. How low can people descend? I am ashamed for the reporter and I will personally take the matter up with him”, said Dike.

A national sports publication had at the weekend generously quoted Coach Dike as having pointed accusing fingers at the Honourable Minister/Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Barrister Abdulrahaman Gimba and some Members of the NFF Executive Committee for imposing players on him.

“The players I used to prosecute the qualifying games were picked by myself and other Members of the technical crew of the team. It is unfortunate that we lost. Nobody imposed any player on me. I will say it anywhere,” stressed the coach.

Nigeria’s U-17 team lost 2-3 on aggregate to their counterparts from Benin Republic in the African U-17 Championship fixture.

Coach Alphonsus Dike future has come in for a lot of flak for coaching the Eaglets to a humiliating 3-0 defeat to the Young Squirrels of Benin Republic in their Algeria 2009 Under-17 African Championship qualifier in Cotonou on September 14.

The defeat sent out Nigeria from the Algeria 2009 party and there has been pressure on the Nigeria Football Federation to sack Dike.

Speaking with Brila FM on Monday, Amuneke insisted he deserved to coach the Eaglets, because possessed the professional qualification for the job.

He said, “I have declared my interest in serving the nation, to impart my knowledge of the game to the younger players as a coach but one has to wait for an opportunity.

“No one was born with experience; it is something you gain in your life. I don’t have to coach Barcelona or Manchester United before you can say I have the experience for the job.”

Amuneke, whose brace helped the Super Eagles won the Tunisia’94 Nations Cup for the country in the 2-1 defeat of Zambia in the final, said he would not work as an assistant coach.

“I want to be the chief coach. I want to apply my own way of doing things, I want to apply my own definition of training,” the former Sporting Lisbon star said.

What a woman can do, it would require four men to do - Executive Secretary, Oriade Local Govt
By STEVE AGBOTA
Tuesday, September 23, 2008

Within 21 days of her appointment as the Executive Secretary of Oriade Local Government Development Area in Lagos State, Mrs. Abimbola Jijioho-Ogun made such an impact that the people in the area were singing her praises.

She however does not attribute her quick achievement in office to the fact that she holds Masters Degree in Public Administration but says it is because she is a woman.

Woman of the Sun Index

advertisement

According to her, women are naturally far better administrators than men.

"An adage has it that it is the woman that rocks the cradle," she insists. "As a mother she approaches everything she is doing with every seriousness. She believes that this baby must survive and therefore puts in everything she has, no diversion, no interest and no night crawling. She is wholly devoted to duty. It is this mentality that women bring into whatever office that they find themselves, that is why I say that what a woman can do, it would require four men to do it".

She said that the only problem was that men have refused to realize the women’s administrative potentials.

She attended Holy Child College, Lagos, and Federal Government College Lagos for her Secondary School and HSC respectively. Later she went to University of Lagos for her Bachelor degree, University of Ibadan for her Masters and Lagos State University for her Masters in Public Administration. She has been working for Lagos State Government for over 20 years and rose through the ranks to become the Assistant General Manager of Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

My appointment

She explained that, she never expected she would be appointed the Executive Secretary of a local government.

"Actually my appointment as the Executive Secretary came to me as a surprise because I didn’t expect it. Though one always hopes one day he or she would get an opportunity to serve. When I was working in LAWMA, I was rendering some services but now it is a different ball game because I now have to call the shots. I have to define my programmes and it is quite a challenge. But so far we have been coping tremendously with the assistance of everybody I met on ground from the council manager to the lowest cadre of staff."

Challenges of office

According to her, the challenge of her new office is enormous as it has put her in the spotlight.

"Well, an adage has it that uneasy lies the head that wears the crown. I find out that it has affected my going to bed at night and waking up in the morning because at night I would still be thinking of what I am going to do the next day but with God on our side we are making steady progress."

Mandate of office

The Executive Secretary said that the governor of Lagos State gave them a mandate to make sure that the area was clean and motorable in line with the Lagos Mega-city plan.

"The governor gave us a mandate that we have to make sure that among other things; there should be no filth in our area. He said that we must make sure that the environment is neat and that traffic flows. So we have to patch some of the roads and clear some of the backlog of refuse."

Previous experience

She has had plenty experience working in administration, especially working within government.

"For the past 20 years, I worked in Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency as a police for the environment. From there, I went to the LAWMA as a commercial officer for waste collection where we sell waste to the people and make money. I see my coming to Oriade as a continuation of what I was doing because we used to assist industries to clear backlog of refuse and that is experience that has been helping me."

The idea of a development council

"I think that whatever we have to do, we have to be cautious because it is the people that are important. People need development at the grass root. People need development close to their doorstep and the more you have administration at the local level, the better for the community. It is good to decentralize government down further. The number of local government and local development councils that we have in this state I am sure is not yet enough but it is something for the future. I want the Federal Government to join the state governments to decentralize power down to the grass roots. We should not play politics with development."

Coping with home and office

Being a mother who works very hard it cannot be easy. She attributes her success to having an understanding husband.

"He has always been of immense support right from my secondary school up to this present time. We are also blessed with boys who are now grown. The youngest is in the Senior Secondary School. By and large, they have been my pillars of support. Every body can make his meal. I make the meal for the week and everybody helps me. But right now my husband is not in Lagos but when ever he comes back, I give him all the attention because men want you to know that they the number one baby."

Advice to women

"Our first responsibility as women is to support the home spiritually. We are supposed support the men. Wherever we find ourselves, we must try to deliver. We must try to be of service to our children and the community where we find ourselves. A good mother is judged by the success of her home. To every woman, your first role is your responsibility to your family and your family starts from where you find yourself. My first family now is in Oriade and that is why I want to put in my best so that when I am out, the people will not forget me."

PoliticsRe: Fg Names Street After Fela, Dele Giwa, Bob Marley by DeepZone(op): 2:10am On Sep 24, 2008
Shame, even Bob Marley got a street while they honored only 1 woman. Imagine sexism at it's height.
PoliticsFg Names Street After Fela, Dele Giwa, Bob Marley by DeepZone(op): 2:08am On Sep 24, 2008
Govt names streets after Fela, Saro-Wiwa, Dele Giwa, others
From Martins Oloja, Abuja Bureau Chief

THEIR exploits in their chosen fields were or are still monumental. Some of them have been recognised for their contributions but majority of them remained unsung until now.

There is a major rethink by the Federal Government, which has named major streets and roads in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), a symbol of Nigerias unity, after these eminent citizens, who are often regarded as the nation's "forgotten icons."

A striking feature of the list of beneficiaries of the government's action is the inclusion of some Nigerians who were even executed by the Nigerian state in questionable circumstances.

The move came after 32 years of complicated and indiscriminate naming of streets in the nation's capital after mostly elements, peoples, places and events that are generally unrelated to Nigeria and the continent.

In a comprehensive policy review to be unveiled by the government soon, literary giants, political leaders, famous journalists, notable religious and labour leaders, some living and others dead, have been immortalised.

Among them are Professors Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, Bishop David Oyedepo, Sheik Abubakar Gumi, the late Ken Saro-Wiwa, Mamman Shata, Sonny Okosuns, Babatunde Jose, Dele Giwa, Abubakar Imam, Ali Ciroma, Pa Michael Imoudu.

In the master list obtained by The Guardian at the weekend, about 200 streets will be renamed in an exercise that will affect the following districts in the FCT. They are Maitama and Bunkoro Districts, (Gwarimpa 11) Life Camp (Gwarimpa1), Gudu (Apo Legislators' Quarters) and Asokoro.

In the special recognition cadre are the Abuja Airport Road, to be named after President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua and the multi-District Arterial Road formerly coded S20 after Vice President Goodluck Jonathan.

Another Multi-District Arterial Road (such as Obafemi Awolowo Road covering Utako, Jabi among others would be named after former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. In the justification column of the list, it is written that "no street has been named after him."

Also, former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala will have a street in Asokoro named after her. She had earlier been in Utako District but now a street/close near the World Bank building in Asokoro earlier named after the late Egyptian President Gamal Nasser will be changed to her name. In the justification column, the committee handling the exercise, noted "proximity to the World Bank" while in the executive summary, the panel wrote:

"It is in special recognition of the contributions of the former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to the economic reforms in 2003-2007. There is need to name a befitting street after her in Asokoro, which is usually named after freedom fighters and renowned Africans. Thus the existing Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Street will be renamed after one of the former Ministers of FCT, the late Maj.-Gen. Mamman Vatsa."

In the same executive summary, the 11-man committee which the FCT Minister, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar, set up for the exercise, explained that ", 193 streets recommended to be renamed in the first phase of renaming streets in the Federal Capital City, Abuja is in conformity with the reviewed criteria, which emphasise relevance and current reality as Abuja transforms into one of the modern cities in Africa and indeed the world."

The committee said that "in conducting the exercise, it considered the following:

Relevance of the existing names of streets in Maitama, Gudu-Apo and Jabi/Utako vis-ˆ-vis current realities. In Maitama, over 193 streets in the districts are named after water bodies in Europe and America while a few have African names. Maitama A05 is proposed to be named after hills and rock formations in view of its proximity to the Aso Rock, while Maitama A06 will be named after rivers and water bodies.
Renaming of streets and roads in Gudu Street especially the Apo Legislators' Quarters to reflect Nigeria's democratic dispensation as the area accommodates the top class in Nigeria's legislature, both past and present. At present, the official residences of the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives are located in the area.
In conformity with the existing criteria, which recommend that ring roads and expressways are to be named after Nigerian Presidents, the present Airport Road is recommended to be renamed Umaru Musa Yar'Adua Way while the S20, an Arterial, which runs the Sector Centres in Phase 11 is recommended to be renamed as Goodluck Jonathan Way.
In the special recognition for top literary icons, besides Soyinka and Achebe, who will be honoured in Gwarimpa, other notables listed for the district include the late Prof. Chike Obi, a renowned mathematician, who passed on earlier this year, former Education Minister, Prof. Aliyu Babs Fafunwa, Isaac Adaka Boro, a famous freedom fighter of the Niger Delta cause, Kanu Nwankwo, a football star and Mrs. Margaret Ekpo, a popular woman leader who passed on in 2006.
Others to be honoured (some post-humously) in Gwarimpa Bunkoro District include some religious leaders such as Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, who would have the first Avenue named after him; Francis Cardinal Arinze of the Vatican, Alhaji Abdulwahab Folawiyo, Sheikh, Al Miskin, Sheikh Nasiru Kabara, Sheikh Ismaila Idris, Sheikh Abu Fatah, the late Sheikh Abubakar Gumi, Sheik Dahiru Bauchi and Alhaji Sulu Gambari, the late Emir of Ilorin.

There are also Hajiya Gambo Sawaba, Prof. Claude Ake, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Mamman Shata, Bishop David Oyedepo, Founding Bishop of the Living Faith Church World Outreach (aka Winners' Chapel).

Some artistes and educationists who made the list include the late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Prof. Umaru Shehu, Samuel Okwaraji, Sonny Okosuns, Dele Giwa, Dr. Tai Solarin, Prof. Ishaya Audu, Saadu Zungur, Rev. G.G Ganaka and Bob Marley.

The comprehensive list in Gwarimpa that has never been named after anybody parades other notable personalities, such as the labour leaders: the late Pa Michael Imoudu, Ali Ciroma and Hassan Sunmonu.

The panel also recognised Technical Team members of the Abuja Master Plan in the honours' list. The beneficiaries are Kenzo Tange, a foreigner and Head Technical Team Abuja Master Plan, Oluwole Olumuyiwa (member), Umar Garba Benna, Susan Adoba, E.A.D Nsiegbe, T.M Aluko, Justice Owen Feibai, C.O Aimola, Bawa Bwari, Prof. Akin Mabogunje, Shuaibu Gani, M.O Oyawoye, T. Mohammed and I. Igbiehon.

Apart from Dele Giwa, other media personalities to be honoured include the late Alhaji Babatunde Jose and Malam Turi Muhammed.

Sources at the FCT minister's office told The Guardian last night that more beneficiaries would soon be announced.

I definitely didnt misquote you Funmi because as you can see I'm not the only one who thought this way.

Yopu've made many *jokes* in the past implying you'D like to be with an Igbo dude.
I remember well when you guys almost jumped me when I said i liked Ghanians so much. If I recall, I've said it many times that my younger sister is married to an ibo guy. Very handsome, educated, suave , lovely and all that but i dont know whether he pays tithe or not Lol am hearing they dont pay tithes for the 1st time. BUT i've always made it clear that i can even marry a white man but preferably, an ibo, yoruba or ghananian. I noticed that people here are too sensitive to ethnic issues. You write something, they pick the ones they want to see. I also remember one yoruba tribalist here cursing me out by saying : did you not say you'll marry an ibo man? you'll be cursed if you do that. That was in the politics section. I was stunned.

Are you a RN?
Hll no.

Seriously though, is he Carrib? Decent naija guys don't live in Maryland.
MD is a state and it's hard to believe that the whole state could be crowded with losers even if it's dirty baltimore. I never said my guy lives in MD. He could be in virginia, DC or Delaware and he's definitely not Caribbean.

RomanceRe: Funmi's Dilemma by DeepZone(op): 12:47am On Sep 24, 2008
@ topic: if you say you're a Christian( Huh), then your husband is supposed to have the authority to cancel some of your decisions if he's so inclined, after you marry. Any married couple from different religious backgrounds will tell you that.

So if your guy says no tithing, then don't tithe, because if you do so secretly, then its at your own risk. There's a bible verse which applies to this kind of thing. Something about a girl's father and husband being able to cancel her vows. Old testament though, so you can ignore it if you feel like, i guess, or if your pastor pulls up a different verse to counteract it.
I cannot compromise my religious belief because of a man. Never and I mean it. I'll rather stop that accident from happening now before it's too late. I suspect that along the way he may never drop this idea and may demand I follow suit.

Anyway, after marriage, your husband can even order you to stop attending your church and you're supposed to obey or at least pamper him into an agreeable state of mind.
Not me, I dont have a shelf syndrome. My husband cannot order me to do anything because am not a maid. Dont even think about it.

None of the above reflects my personal; views. Am just stating what I've heard, since you've suddenly decided to go religious.
There is no sudden religious thing going on because I've always expressed my views about tithing from the get go.

Something tells me your b/friend may be Igbo and am wondering if you met him via nairaland in some way? Just curious.
Why do you think so? Ibo men dont pay tithes? I never knew that sha. You must be mistaking me with someone because I've never met anyone online before. Anywayz, my boo is not here and can never be here although he gets mad sometimes if i spend a lot of time here. Hannibal and Pataki are very therapeutic and special to me.
