Politics / Our leaders hav failed to build Nigeria on basis of unity & tolerance -Osinbanjo by DefHQ: 9:45am On Aug 12, 2021
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says unity and tolerance are key elements in promoting national security, economic success, and greatness.

In a statement on Wednesday, Mr Osinbajo’s media aide Laolu Akande said the vice president received a delegation from Arewa Concerned People for National Unity and Religious Tolerance at the Presidential Villa.

Auwal Maidabino and Usman Ado-Bayero led the delegation. Mr Osinbajo explained that some of the greatest nations in the world were multiracial, multiethnic, and multireligious.

The greatest nations in the world are multiracial, multireligious, and multiethnic,” said the vice president. “As a matter of fact, some of these things are as important as the economy and security. A united people, people who see themselves as one, are more likely to be economically successful, more likely to be able to secure themselves and secure their borders.”

According to Mr Osinbajo, religious tolerance and unity is a matter that goes beyond mere advocacy. He said he believed strongly that the greatness of nations, wherever the countries might be, had always been on account of leaders who thought it fit to build those nations based on unity and tolerance.

Politics / Abba Kyari: You Stole 1billion Naira. Sahara Reporters Accuse DIG Egbunike by DefHQ: 11:20pm On Aug 11, 2021
National Coordinator of Competent Governance for Accountability and Civic Trust (CGACT), Amb Adebayo Omoba, has berated alleged smear campaign against the head of the Abba Kyari probe panel and Deputy Inspector General of Police, (DIG) Joseph Egbunike, on an alleged N1billion project for a fake police camp.

Reacting to the alleged blackmail against the senior police officer from an online publication, Sahara Reporters in a press conference in Abuja, Omoba condemned calculated attempt to defaming an officer and “reputable gentle man with impeccable character on the altar of flimflam report on their unfounded allegations.”

According to him, “Based on our findings, the allegations on the DIG who was at the time the CP Budget and Finance, that he joined others to approve the sum of N1billion for the police camp projects in his former role as commissioner in charge of Budget and Finance at the police headquarters and held meetings with contractors to siphon money is a baseless and smear campaign against his personality traits in the force.

“We all know the procedures in awarding and approving government contracts, be it local state or federal, all contracts have to go through government bureaucracy, which means contracts have to be verified from one office to another for accountability and proper scrutiny.

“It is apparent that FIJ and its cohort, Sahara Reporters, was totally misleading and geared towards defaming the said officer owing to the fact that the DIG happens to be the head of the Abba Kyari probe panel, having served as the CP Budget and Finance in 2018 before his promotion to DIG in charge of the Finance and Administration Department of the Nigeria police.

“To this end, Sahara Reporters and FIJ have exposed their unprofessionalism by providing themselves as dump site for junk journalism. A platform that is meant to be a societal watchdog is entrenching itself as an agent of propaganda, fake news and controversies.

“We therefore advise that their reportage should double-check its sources of information thereby carrying out a critical investigation of its news.”

Politics / Igbos should accept they were defeated in 1967 and move on -Amb yerima Abdulahi by DefHQ: 5:49pm On Aug 10, 2021
A former envoy to Malaysia and elder statesman, Amb. Yerima Abdullahi, who is also a close associate of the president, said granting the igbos a referendum was better than eroding the peace and progress of the country, adding that fighting a second phase of civil war is unthinkable.

He made this disclosure in an interview with our correspondent in Gombe, stressing that leaders should embrace alternative means of resolving the debacle.

According to him, “It is not surprising if wars are fought but when wars are fought, eventually someone will lose. However, you become more civilized based on the experiences of the war, so the need to come together and eventually sort out yourselves. Accept that you were defeated in the war, but you will not fold your arms by accepting the defeat.

but if there are people who still feels strongly that they want their own country by whatever name they call it. Whether they call it Biafra, the most sensible thing to do is to give them an opportunity to vote. They should hold a plebiscite, if they want for goodness sake let them go.”

“If igbos wants to get out of Nigeria, well for goodness sake carve it out but they know the implications of being out of Nigeria. The leaders that are leading them should know the implications. They should know that the Igbo man who is very prosperous in Gaboro in the Eastern part of Borno state, in Ilela, Kawoje in Kebbi state.

“There are Igbos all over the country and they are not among the poor ones. So for goodness sake give them the opportunity. Let them go atleast we will experience some peace, what we don’t like is dwindling or eroding the peaceful environment.

I don’t know how you will split a country on a platter of gold. However, it is better to allow them go than to say we fight another civil war,” he added.

Politics / Nnamdi Kanu De Facto Governor-general Of The East [photos] - PM news by DefHQ: 2:50pm On Aug 10, 2021
Nnamdi Kanu heeded by South easterners than the governors

By Abankula

The people of Southeastern states of Nigeria ignored their governors Monday and complied with the order of Nnamdi Kanu’s Indigenous People of Biafra to sit at home.

The protest called by the so-called outlawed organisation was successful, as people stayed home.

It was to demand for the release of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, from DSS detention.

Banks, offices, markets were shut, streets were deserted. Students who were expected to write the NECO test on Mathematics, also obeyed the order.

What this clearly shows is that the average south easterner has bought into the separatist campaign of IPOB, led by Nnamdi Kanu.

Several of the governors ahead of the protest issued warnings to their people to come out for work.

The police also assured the people they will be protected.

But they didn’t heed the warnings and assurances.

The police, rather failed to protect themselves when gunmen attacked their Nnewi area command in Anambra.

Next week Monday is another protest day.
It will be unwise to ignore the sit at home order as you might end up endangering yourself.

Politics / It is unwise to disobey ipob's sit at home order by DefHQ: 9:53am On Aug 10, 2021
For now it is a well known fact that ipob are in the majority and they control the East and to a large extent the south south.. The desire for freedom coupled with the nepotistic body language of the federal government has helped to gather every Igbo man and oppressed masses under the ipob umbrella as they are currently the only group in the forefront of the struggle for self determination..

The federal government are not happy with the huge followership the group are gathering on a daily basis despite proscribing it as a terrorist group. So will do every thing within its power to taint the image of the group..
Having that in mind, Imagine the extent that the lawless DSS are willing to go in order to pull down the group...

If the federal government could go against international laws to kidnap Kanu, not minding the implications, imagine what they'll be willing to do his followers?.. They'll just grab you, plant some guns on you, and torture you into confessing to be an ESN member.

I saw videos of busses being burnt for daring to travel, I also saw videos of peoples Good's being destroyed for defying the order and I said to myself, why would someone wanna take such a risk on that date just because of money?..
It means you do not understand the times! These are times where you can't afford to sag your trousers, draw tatoo, and look rough because the government will just pick u up and tag you UGM..

These are times when you can't afford to defy the sit at home order because several state and non state actors will be in play on that day..the police, army, bandits, could disguise as UGM and destroy your goods, burn your vehicles or even kill you and you'd think it was ipob enforcing the sit at home order...

They'll kill you and try to pin it on ipob..
BE WISE! USE YOUR HEAD.

BREAKING: Anyone who dares comes out’ll find it hot — IPOB denies suspending sit-at-home order
August 8, 2021

The Indigenous People of Biafra has dismissed the alleged statement from the younger brother to its leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, that it has suspended its Sit-at-home scheduled for Monday, August 9, 2021.

A statement from IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary Emma Powerful said that the alleged Kanu’s brother who issued the statement is not IPOB’s spokesman and therefore should be ignored.

According to Powerful, “Kanu brother is not IPOB spokesperson and anybody who listens to that deceptive statement and obligated to such statement by coming out tomorrow will get it hot.”

Politics / If you unite, you can bring down this evil regime, seize power- Rochas to youths by DefHQ: 8:37am On Aug 06, 2021
*****There’s vacuum in Nigeria, says Rochas Okorocha.

Rochas Okorocha, a chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress, says there is a vacuum in Nigeria.

Under President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime, wanton violence and disregard for human rights have plummeted.

Mr Okorocha, a senator representing Imo West, stated this at a one-day summit and award recognition programme of the Nigerian Diaspora Youth Ambassador (NDYA) on Thursday in Abuja.

Addressing Nigerian youths, the former Imo governor stated, “You are the very group of people we have been waiting for to correct our mistakes and build a Nigeria of our collective dreams.

“There is a vacuum in Nigeria, and this nation is waiting for you to rewrite the history of Nigeria. If you can come together to say we want to take the presidency, no matter how many lives you loose, you will do it because you stand to succeed in unity.’’

With the unemployment rate skyrocketing, the senator urged them not to wait for white-collar works.

“If you must succeed, you must do teamwork like the lion to bring down the elephant called leadership. United, you can achieve anything, just like the lion that has its strength in unity,”

Don’t give up. Continue to persist,!

Politics / Saad Abubakar: Nigeria Is In A Bad Situation, Lets Stop Deceiving Ourselves by DefHQ: 8:12am On Aug 06, 2021
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has submitted that Nigeria is in a bad place.

The monarch stated this on Thursday, while speaking during the opening ceremony of a summit in Gombe State, organised by the Da’awah Coordination Council of Nigeria (DCCN).

He advised Governors to ensure there is adequate supply of food, as food shortage looms.
According to the Sultan, scarcity of food will increase insecurity in Nigeria
.

“I will like to call on governors to ensure they make adequate supply of food in store for the common man in anticipation of possible shortage of food in the world. And at the right time, subsidise it so that the common man can afford.

“This is because a hungry man is an angry man. Without food, there will be no peace and without peace, there will be no security,” he said.
The traditional ruler, commenting on the security situation in the country, said: “Let us not deceive ourselves that things are right. Things are not right, we know it and we have seen so much in our lives.
“It doesn’t take anybody a lot to know that Nigeria is in a very bad situation and it is a fact.”

Politics / Politicians Not IPOB are the sponsors of UGM __Hope Uzodimma by DefHQ: 12:43pm On Aug 05, 2021
****…Hope Counter's police on IPOB involvement.
***I am the chief security officer of the state and have done some thorough investigation and I have a credible lead as to those who are sponsoring the activities of these hoodlums..

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has said some aggrieved politicians are behind the attacks on police stations and a correctional facility in the state.

He said the politicians’ objective is to destablise the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.

The governor spoke while featuring on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme.

“what is important to take home is for Nigerians to know of the plot by a group of aggrieved politicians to destablise the government of APC. I have done some thorough investigation and I have a credible lead as to those who are sponsoring the activities of these hoodlums.

“We are working hard to ensure that the sponsors of these dastardly acts must be brought to book.”

The governor also said members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and ESN are not behind the attack.

The police had earlier said the Eastern Security Network (ESN), an outfit of IPOB, was behind the violence in the state.

But Uzodimma said hoodlums were hired from outside Imo state, noting that they only pretended to be IPOB members.

He said: “They(politicians) try to identify grievances of people in a particular area. They hire hoodlums from outside Imo State. They bring them in pretending to be IPOB and they commit this crime and they go away.

“It is not about IPOB. Yes, we agree, we have aggrieved IPOB members. But I can tell you, those who are doing these destructions, most of them were brought from outside Imo State.”

The governor said his administration has trained over 4000 youths on community policing. He said they will work with vigilantes to support the efforts of security agencies to secure Imo State.

Politics / Presdent Buhari to build gas pipeline from Kaduna, Kano to Europe __Femi Adesina by DefHQ: 9:50am On Aug 04, 2021
*****officials say President Buhari sees the pipeline as very “dear” to him.

Officials term it trans-Sahara dessert gas pipeline, envisioned to run from Nigeria’s gas wells through the Sahara Desert to Morocco and onwards to Europe.

“Morocco shares boundaries with Europe. So, once it gets to Morocco, we can hook up with their pipeline system and take our gas straight to Europe through pipelines,’’ Timipre sylva said in Abuja.

“President Muhammadu Buhari and the King of Morocco are very committed to it and we believe that we will take it to an advanced stage,’’ he added.

Meanwhile,In Nigeria, officials say President Buhari sees the pipeline as very “dear” to him. Femi Adesina, his advisor on media and publicity said Buhari wants to see the project succeed.

Ranking as one of the top 10 largest world’s gas resource countries with excess of 600 trillion cubic feet, Nigeria launched what it called the first phase of its gas pipeline project that targets the trans-Saharan and European markets.

It will construct the Ajaokuta, Kaduna, Kano gas pipeline (AKK), which is part of the West African gas pipeline that is already in place, taking gas from Nigeria to Benin Republic, Togo and Ghana. The final lap of the AKK project would extend it to the Sahel and on to Algeria, Morocco and Europe.

The AKK gas pipeline project entails the construction of a 614km natural gas line from the Ajaokuta terminal gas station in the Kogi state in the north central region of Nigeria, through the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, and Kaduna, to terminate at a gas station in Kano.

Crime / Bandits raid suleja communities, carry out house to house abductions by DefHQ: 9:25am On Aug 04, 2021
bandits have Raided Suleja Community, Abducting Children From House To House
A witness said the victims on Wednesday morning from three houses and a hotel within Unguwar area of the metropolitan town.

Unknown gunmen , have raided Kwankwashe, a Suleja community located along the Suleja-Madalla road, Niger State, abducting residents, including children.

A witness said the victims on Wednesday morning from three houses and a hotel within Unguwar Fulani area of the metropolitan town.

According to Daily Trust, a resident, Faith Lucky, whose two children a 17-year-old girl, and a 15-year-old boy, were taken, said she became aware of their presence when they started hitting her compound’s gate.

She said it took them about 20 minutes to pull down the gate.

“I woke up my children immediately and made an attempt to glance toward them through my window. But within a few minutes they rushed towards there and broke part of the window’s burglary.

“They flashed light, and pointed a gun towards me, directing that I should open the room’s door.”

The woman added that in the process, they forced them to surrender their phones along with the available money in their possession, before leaving with the two children.

Another woman said the gunmen arrived in her compound around 1am, and that she, along with her husband, were able to escape.

She said the attackers were able to reach the section where her visiting mother and brother in-laws were.

“So my brother-in-law remained with mama who could not move away. That was how they abducted him and also took our other belongings like phones, laptops, as well as clothes and shoes,” the woman said.

A resident, who simply gave his name as Ruben, said the attackers who also abducted two hotel staff in the area, adding that they operated for more than an hour before fleeing on hearing the police siren.

Efforts to speak to the Suleja Police Area Commander, ACP Sani Badarwa, was not successful as at the time of filing this report, as his orderly who responded to our reporter’s call made to his contact, said that his boss was attending a meeting.

Politics / Gov Ortom Petitions UN Over Miyetti Allah-Terrorists Killings In Benue State by DefHQ: 8:36am On Aug 04, 2021
The governor also said in one occasion, he had to run for close to two kilometres to escape after about 15 herdsmen attacked him on his farm at Tyo-Mu community, near Makurdi, the state capital.

Ortom was one of the governors to push for the anti-open grazing law in his state over deadly clashes between the nomads and farmers, a move that was heavily criticised by the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, which are the umbrella bodies for nomadic herders in the country.

He once told Fulani killer herders to go to Bauchi State saying there was no room for them in his state.

Because of that, I was targeted for elimination, That they will go after me either in my home, farm or wherever they could get me.

“But like I always say, my life is in the hands of God, not in the hands of any Fulani man or anybody whatsoever.

“And I remain firm, I will fight for the truth, equity and fairness till when God permits that I will not be here again, then I will go.

“I appreciate the security personnel attached to me, they were able to repel them and they could not have access to me.

“I thank God for my fitness too. To be able to run for close to two kilometres without stopping, means that God has given me strength, and I am grateful to God.”

Ortom said his grudge is with killer Fulani herders and not people of Fulani extraction.

He said, “I am not going to subject myself to intimidation by anyone whatsoever.

“I don’t have problems with any Fulani man or the Fulani race, but I have a problem with Fulani bandits, who have vowed to take over Nigeria as their ancestral home and I say no, not when I am here as governor leading my state.

“I am not concerned about other states, any state that wants to give their land and themselves to be slaves to Fulani men, I have no problem with them but, in my state, I have consulted with my people and what I am doing is in line with the wishes of my people, and on that, I stand. I have not infringed on anybody’s right.

“My lawyer is here, he is going to make a petition against the leadership of Miyetti Allah because they came out to target me and, behind the scenes, they are planning to eliminate me in my land.

“If I can’t go to the farm as governor with the entire security around me, then who else can go to the farm? You can imagine the pains that we have here in Benue State.

“I don’t know why these Fulani men are coming from Niger, Mali, Chad and Senegal and other parts of the world to Nigeria.
“They have destroyed Mali completely, nothing is happening there, they have destroyed Libya, they have destroyed several other countries with their aggression and they think they can come here and destroy Nigeria. I don’t know what they mean.

“And anytime our Livestock Guards and security agencies go after them, then run back into the forest across the river.

"This is not fair, I am going to make a petition against the leadership of Miyetti Allah because I hold them responsible.

“I have been calling for the arrest of these people since 2017 and they are going about their normal businesses in Abuja, in Yola, Kano and everywhere without security personnel inviting them for questioning.

“And my pain is that these people are protected by our security personnel who are paid with our tax payers’ money. These are security men that are inadequate because of the crisis created by Miyetti Allah and the police are still protecting them.

“Why, are we second-class citizens? I am not a second-class citizen to anyone in this country.

“I pay my tax just like any other person and I am law-abiding and I hope that the security agencies will question these people on why they should single me out in their Yola meeting and behind the scenes giving orders for me to be eliminated. I have seen the result today. If not for the security personnel that were with me it would have been a story.

“Recall that Governor Fayemi came out clearly and said this government has failed. Providing security is nil. Everybody is running all over the place; traditional rulers, governors, politicians and all. If I am not safe in my state, who else is safe?

We are begging the Federal Government that brought them (Fulani militia) into the country, they should settle them to go back to where they came from so that we can have our peace. Even if it means taxing all of us to settle them to go away so that we can go to the farm, we will do that. If I cannot go to the farm, who else can go to the farm in Benue?

Speaking through Gwandu, his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, he said “It is a common knowledge that the two eminent personalities are both lawyers, hence could be entitled to their respective opinions within the context of Section 39 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that upholds freedom of expression.

Politics / YAF: Yoruba Group Rejects Yoruba Nation, Petitions United Nations by DefHQ: 7:57am On Aug 03, 2021
A group, the Yoruba Appraisal Forum (YAF) on Monday, petitioned the United Nations over the plan by the umbrella body of Yoruba self-determination groups, Ilana Omo Oodua, to present a petition against the Nigerian government at the 76th General Assembly of the UN.

The petition was served to the UN alongside its five permanent members: the European Union, the African Union and representatives of other countries.

In the document, YAF urged the UN and its other recipients to bar Ilana Omo Oodua and its allies from attending the UNGA where it planned on presenting a petition against the Federal Government of Nigeria.

According to the group, the petition in question was written to destabilise the country.

The statement reads: “the ultimate objective of this plan by the group is to achieve nothing salutary or beneficial to the people of Nigeria but to further their evil design to undermine and bring down the country and the incumbent administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, out of sheer malice over the forthcoming 2023 general elections.”

Signed by YAF National Coordinator, Adeshina Animashaun, the petition further accused Ilana Omo Oodua of funding “the violent activities of the self-styled Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho, currently undergoing trial in the Benin Republic.

Politics / Ikamu Hamidu Kato Sentenced To Two Years In Prison For Insulting Buhari, SGF by DefHQ: 12:09am On Aug 03, 2021
Justice Dimas Gwama of the Magistrates' Court IV in Yola, Adamawa State sentenced a youth, Ikamu Hamidu Kato, to two years’ imprisonment for insulting president Muhammadu Buhari.

SaharaReporters had earlier today reported that Kato was remanded in prison for insulting Buhari and Mustapha on social media.

Kato, a youth leader of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party in the Hong area of the state, allegedly took to his Facebook page to condemn the insecurity in the area following recent attacks by armed men suspected to be Boko Haram members.

He was alleged to have insulted Buhari and Mustapha in a viral video on his Facebook page.

The presiding judge said in passing the sentence, the court had considered the remorseful mien of the convict and his plea for mercies.

But Gwama said despite his show of remorse and plea for mercies, the court had to convict him to serve as deterrent to others.

Earlier, the convict pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy by convicting him with an option of fine because he was a family man and had orphans under him.

He was later invited, investigated and arraigned before the court by the Department of State Security (DSS).
the Hong local government chapter of the PDP has suspended the youth leader.

Politics / Why Does Buhari Regime Treat Us Like Dirt? IDP's Ask Reporter! by DefHQ: 11:45pm On Aug 02, 2021
IDPs have accused President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime of treating them as worthless pieces of filth, calling on the government to look after them like they do repentant Boko Haram terrorists.

Luka Yathuma, IDPs secretary at the Kuchigoro Camp, Abuja, pleaded with Mr Buhari’s regime to rehabilitate the displaced as it did Boko Haram terrorists. Mr Yathuma said such a gesture would go a long way in enhancing the living standards of IDPs and give them a sense of belonging.

“We are law-abiding citizens of the country who don’t want to cause any harm to anyone. The people that put us in this condition are rehabilitated, trained in skill acquisition, and after that, they are empowered,” he pointed out. “Those of them that want to go to school are being given scholarships to go to school. But what about their victims that are dropping out of school because of the condition they found themselves in?”

“We are begging the federal government also to rehabilitate IDPs, provide them with skill acquisition opportunities and scholarships to make their lives better like the ex-Boko Haram members.

“But when we see the bad group that made us come here being taken care of, it breaks us down emotionally and psychologically. You're rehabilitating ex-Boko Haram members, but what about the victims?” he added.

Mr Yathuma lamented the deplorable state of the IDP camp, warning that vulnerable youths have become “tools in the hands of bad politicians” and criminal gangs.

“If the country is not secure, the rich and their wealth will also not be secure. Go inside our tent and see, we lay on bare ground, and our children are suffering from cold, malaria and other illnesses,” said Mr Yathuma. “Recently, about six people died in our camp here in New Kuchigoro as a result of a cholera outbreak and no help yet.”

Further explaining the squalid condition the IDPs live in, he noted, “Our condition is terrible: some rich people will not keep their dogs or chickens in the tent we are sleeping. But it has become our comfort zones because we have no option.

“Before we were displaced, most of us had houses, cars, sources of income, and means of livelihood. But now we have lost everything. We are emotionally down.

Politics / NASS Plans To Meet US Congress Over $875m Weapons Deal Stoppage by DefHQ: 2:19am On Jul 31, 2021
The National Assembly is billed to hold talks with the United States Congress over the stoppage of weapons sale to Nigeria, Saturday PUNCH has reliably learnt.

The Senate and the House of Representatives may be sending different delegations to meet with their American counterparts on how to successfully procure attack helicopters and other arms and an munition in a deal valued at $875m (N360bn/)

Chairmen of different security committees in the National Assembly, in separate interviews with one of our correspondents between Wednesday and Friday, confirmed knowledge of the deal’s stoppage and their readiness to seek legislative and diplomatic interventions.

The US lawmakers are holding down a proposed sale of warplanes to Nigeria amid mounting concerns over the regime of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari’s (retd), human rights record as the country grapples with multiple security crises.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee of the Congress has reportedly delayed clearing a proposed sale of 12 AH-1 Cobra fighter jets and accompanying defence systems to the Nigerian military.

The proposed sale also includes 28 helicopter engines produced by GE Aviation, 14 military-grade aircraft navigation systems made by Honeywell, and 2,000 advanced precision kill weapon systems – laser-guided rocket munitions, according to information sent by the State Department to Congress and reviewed by Foreign Policy Magazine.

A report by the magazine on Tuesday said the behind-the-scenes controversy over the proposed arms sale illustrated a broader debate among Washington policymakers over how to balance national security with human rights objectives.

The hold on the sale also showcases how powerful US lawmakers want to push the Joe Biden administration to rethink US relations with Nigeria amid overarching concerns that Buhari is drifting toward authoritarianism as his government is besieged by multiple security challenges, including the Boko Haram insurgency.

Western governments and international human rights organisations have ramped up their criticisms of the Buhari regime, particularly in the wake of its ban on Twitter, systemic corruption issues, and the Nigerian military’s role in crackdowns on #EndSARS protesters last October.

The details on the proposed sale were first sent by the US State Department to Congress in January before then-former Vice President Joe Biden was inaugurated as president, according to officials familiar with the matter.

Asked if the National Assembly would engage the US Congress on the matter, the lawmaker said, “Yes, That is what is right. If it requires that, we would do it.”

Also, the Chairman of the House Committee on Defence, Babajimi Benson, said the lawmakers would deploy diplomatic means to resolve the issue.

On how soon the Nigerian lawmakers would meet with their American counterparts, Benson said, “It is a top priority in our diplomatic shuttles. It was supposed to have been held but we are on recess. We hope that it would be done very soon. It is a matter that we would resolve. They just need assurances.”

A ranking member of the Senate, who spoke on condition of anonymity, however, criticised the US for refusing to sell arms to Nigeria.

The lawmaker said, “We are having this challenge. You cannot move freely. This is a matter of Nigeria and Nigerians against insurgents and terrorists, and bandits who have graduated to an organisation that can be classified as a terrorist organisation. They are shooting down Air Force planes; they are killing people indiscriminately. This is why the Nigerian Government is looking for arms to fight them.
