Politics / How Nnamdi Azikiwe Created The South -south- Vanguard by DefHQ: 10:04am On Jun 19, 2022
How the Igbo elites create the idea that resulted in the birth of the South-South zone. And why?

The answer starts from the 1940s. The various minority groups in Nigeria were never happy to be lumped with their majority neighbours because they feared that they would fall into local colonisation after Nigeria gained her independence.

The creation of the regions by the British colonial masters for administrative convenience had put them under the control of the Igbo in the East, Yoruba in the West and Hausa/Fulani in the North. The uneasy cohabitation held but not for long.

The carpet crossing in the Western Regional House of Assembly forced Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe to relocate to Enugu, and the process of creating room for him to become the first Premier of the Eastern Region generated bad blood between the Igbo and the minorities.

The minorities started asking for the creation of the Calabar-Ogoja-Rivers(COR) state. Majority of the leaders of the Eastern minorities started supporting rival political parties from the North and West against the Igbo. The Western minorities and their colleagues in the North were also fighting for autonomy, and the Western minorities succeeded in the getting their own region created in 1963 (Mid-Western Region).

The sad events of 1966 which saw a military coup and counter-coup being painted in ethnic and sectional colours led to an attempt by Eastern Region to pull out of Nigeria and declare an independent state of Biafra.

However, the British ex-colonialists helped the North in building a national coalition to prevent the actualisation of Biafra. The Eastern minorities pulled out of Biafra when General Gowon created the 12 states and gave them Rivers State and South Eastern State.

It became possible for the federal side to win the war with a blockade of the seaboards which were home to the minorities.

When the war ended, relations between the Igbo and those who fought them during the war remained suspicious. Particularly the West and the Eastern minorities probably felt that the recovery of the Igbo would affront the gains they made while the Igbo were absent from the system.

The minorities appeared to have discovered some gain in siding with the North or West to protect their new-found political space.

At the Mkpoko Igbo pre-Conference summit in Enugu in April 1994, a document that called for the creation of six geo-political zones, the zoning of top political offices (especially the presidency) and rotation of power among the six zones was fashioned out.

There would be three zones in the North, including a separate zone for Northern minorities, and three in the South, including another separate zone for the Southern minorities.

The Igbo elite mandated former Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme, to lead the presentation of this agenda at the Conference, with Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu and Dr Sam Mbakwe as his able lieutenants.

Ekwueme did a fantastic job, but the North, which opposed the geo-political zones and zoning of the presidency, accused him of trying to break up the North and whittle down its influence, which was not far from the truth, anyway. This was one of their reasons for dumping him for Olusegun Obasanjo in 1999.

It was also due to the efforts of another group of Igbo intelligentsia led by retired Commodore Okoh Ebitu Ukiwe that led General Sani Abacha to create Bayelsa and Ebonyi states on October 1, 1996 , while also approving the geo-political zones, even though it is not (yet) in the Constitution as the Igbo recommended.

The creation of an all-Ijaw state was meant to give the Igbo-speaking groups in Rivers their own area of influence; a struggle that the late Dr Obi Wali, a disciple of Dr Azikiwe political school, symbolised. The original script for the creation of Bayelsa State was written by Azikiwe and handed over to Ukiwe to actualise.

Today, the Igbo gambit has worked to the benefit of both the Igbo and the minorities. The minorities now have their own region, a separate identity and economic and political interests of their own to pursue.

That is why a Goodluck Jonathan presidency became possible with full support from his home zone, the South-South. Now, rather than the Minorities ganging up against the Igbo with their Northern “traditional allies†they are bidding directly for power.

The truth or otherwise of that alliance has been proved and both sides now know who their real enemies or opponents are.

The creation of the zones is a charter of full independence and the equitisation of relations between the minorities and their majority neighbours.

Politics / The North Do Not Trust Toxic Wike, - Atiku On Why He Chose Okowa by DefHQ: 7:47am On Jun 17, 2022
• Okowa betrayed ‘Asaba Accord’ of Southern governors, Afegbua react

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar’s decision to pick Delta State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as his running mate, was long in coming despite the several detours to yesterday’s official proclamation.

At the party’s national caucus meeting attended by three other governors and other prominent leaders of the party, Atiku said Okowa’s choice was a very difficult decision in view of the fact that the other two persons whose names were submitted to him were equally qualifiedas.

Those opposed to the recommendation of Wike argued that he would not be a good sell to the North because of his hard stance against the Buhari administration, particularly, the court case against the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) regarding the collection of Value Added Tax (VAT).

According to him, Okowa possesses the admirable attributes for the position of Vice-President and has the appropriate experiences in both legislative and executive arms of governance.

“He personifies not only the seriousness the current moment represents for our country but also the future that our young people yearn for and deserve.

“He’s a serving governor who has demonstrated in his state and through his conduct, that governance is about service to the people. I know that he will not only add excitement to our energised campaign but will also help to bring focus, discipline and stability to our government come 2023,” . qualities wike currently lacks...Atiku stated.

An insider source with Atiku team noted that while Wike’s candidacy was very strong and highly spoken of, talks of his hard sell to the North were a disapproving factor.

“His courage and strength were highly recommended. Atiku would have needed someone of his caliber to be on the ticket but between Tuesday and yesterday, Wike’s virtues and value to the party were overshadowed by talks of his being highly toxic, which would not only affect acceptance of the joint ticket in the North but across other regions as well. It was a big minus.”

Politics / Buhari Wanted Me Dead By All Means Necessary - Igboho by DefHQ: 1:37am On Apr 12, 2022
Nigerian separatist, Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Igboho, has said President Patrice Talon of Benin Republic saved him from the “murderous” Nigerian government.

Igboho is accused of stoking ethnic tensions in Nigeria after targeting Fulani herders. Last year, he emerged as the latest figure calling for a Yoruba nation in the country’s south-west.

In early July 2021, he fled the country after DSS raided his home in Ibadan, Oyo State, as they cracked down on separatist figures.

He would be eventually arrested in Benin Republic by the French-speaking country’s authorities while trying to flee to Germany.

On Friday, Igboho met with members of his legal team in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

He had been given a conditional release from prison in Benin Republic eight months after he was detained there.

“There is no security; there is nothing in Nigeria. And when you want to speak against all these, they would try to kill you. What was my offence? Do I deserve to be killed?” Igboho, speaking in Yoruba language, asked rhetorically.

When I was arrested, many people did not understand. Truly, Nigeria used all her power. Nigeria requested for me to be handed over to them by the Benin Government. So President Talon said he wants to investigate me. So he said if it is about politics and human rights, it is against the law for them to hand me over to the Nigerian government. That is why all Yoruba people should thank President Talon on my behalf,” he told Politics Nigeria.

Politics / Sunday Igboho: Protest Rocks Beninese Consulate General’s Office In Lagos (photo by DefHQ: 11:13am On Dec 13, 2021
Supporters of Yoruba Nation separatist, Sunday Adeyemo ‘Igboho’ are currently protesting at the office of the Consulate general of Benin Republic in Victoria Island, Lagos, to demand his release.

The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions, while calling on the federal government to ensure the release of Igboho from custody.

Biodun Sarumi, one of the protesters, called on Yoruba leaders and other Nigerians to prevail on the federal government to secure Igboho’s release.
Sarumi said that Igboho should not be allowed to die in detention.

He added that Igboho was innocent of the charges preferred against him and that he should not be treated like a criminal.

According to him, Igboho’s fundamental human rights had been grossly abused.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Igboho is currently in detention in Benin Republic over charges bordering on illegal entry, criminal association, among other alleged offences.

On July 20, Igboho and Ropo, his wife, were arrested at an airport in Cotonou by Benin Republic’s security forces while he was trying to flee to Germany.

The Nigerian government had declared him “wanted” after the country’s secret police raided his home in Ibadan, Oyo state.

A week later, a Benin court blocked his extradition to Nigeria while ruling that he should be remanded in prison pending further hearing.

Politics / Abaribe: Nnamdi Kanu Never Gave "No Election Order" To Anambrans by DefHQ: 3:08am On Oct 30, 2021
Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, the Minority Leader of the Nigerian Senate, has revealed that the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, never gave the order for elections not to hold in Anambra State.

Senator Abaribe made the submission on Thursday, October 28, 2021, when he addressed a town hall meeting with the leadership and students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka.

The town hall meeting, which was held at the ASUU NAU Building, was organised by Valentine Ozigbo, the flag-bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2021 Anambra guber election to present his manifesto to the university community.

While addressing the large gathering, Senator Abaribe revealed that he called Mazi Kanu’s lawyer, who confirmed that the order did not come from the IPOB leader, accusing unknown fifth columnists of engineering the rumours.

“Who gave the order that there will be no election? IPOB has never said that there will be no election in Anambra. It is the handwork of 5th columnists,” Senator Abaribe said.

The respected lawmaker went on to drum support for the PDP candidate, describing him as a “gentleman with impeccable character.”

“When I decide to support anyone seeking public office, I am more interested in the character of the person. If you can not stand up for your people, you don’t deserve to be a leader.

“Anambra deserves a governor that will not always go to Abuja, plate-in-hand. We want a governor that will stay in Anambra and work for his people.

POLL

“It is rare for me to endorse a candidate publicly, but in Val, I have seen someone who is sincere, qualified and eager to work for the people. Hold me responsible in the unlikely event that he does not fulfil his promises.

“Anambra roads are a nightmare, and we all suffering from it. Every citizen wants quality roads, electricity, education, and healthcare. In my interaction with Ndi Anambra, an average Anambra person needs a governor with impeccable character, and that man is Valentine Ozigbo.

“So go out and tell your people that a great change is coming in Anambra State, and it is coming from Val and the PDP,” Senator Abaribe, who represents Abia South in the Green Chamber, added.

Politics / Dont Monitor Our Elections, Stay Away! Buhari Tells New Envoys by DefHQ: 9:11am On Oct 27, 2021
PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has admitted that Nigeria’s elections are always rowdy and the Anambra and 2023 general election will not be an exemption, urging envoys to stay away from them for their general safety.

According to him, in the build-up to the 2023 elections, Nigeria’s politics would be ‘necessarily rowdy and tense.’

“The nature of our politicking is very rancorous. It is the nature of politics here.,” he said.

He, however, advised the diplomats to steer clear of ‘our politics’ and focus on their profession.

“Nigeria’s national elections are due in early 2023. The momentum for enhanced political activities is therefore expected to commence soon,” Buhari further said.

‘”Excellencies, the Nigeria will definitely be a better place and much easier place to live in if we all cultivate the culture of patience and tolerance in order to appreciate the values of each of us and the contributions that we all can make, for sustainable unity.

Politics / Bandits Impose Levies On Sokoto Communities, Issue Ultimatum For Payment by DefHQ: 7:52am On Oct 27, 2021
Bandits operating in several parts of Sokoto State have imposed levies on the locals to pay before next Friday or risk attack, Daily Trust can authoritatively report.

A resident of the area revealed that locals are also barred from their farms by the bandits pending payment of the prescribed levies.

Daily Trust reliably gathered that some of the communities had settled the bandits while others were working hard to raise the money.

It was gathered that the bandits considered the population of each community in determining the amounts they would pay.

“Some are asked to pay N400,000, some N700,000 while some even pay less than that and is left for the community to decide how the money will be raised.

“In some communities, heads of households are asked to pay N12,000 each and young men that are not married pay N1,000 each,” another source said.

Findings revealed that Attalawa, Danmaliki, Adamawa, Dukkuma, Sardauna and Dangari villages were asked to pay N400,000 each.

However, residents of Kwatsal village billed N4million were said to have already paid N2million out of the money to the bandits.

“All the villages were given up to Friday to pay the money or risk attack. People are paying because they have no other option,” one of the sources added.

A member representing Sabon Birni North Constituency, Aminu Almustapha Gobir, who confirmed the development, said there had been no attack in Sabon Birni in recent times because the locals were complying with the directive of the bandits.

“The people prefer to pay and live in peace in their communities than to rely on security agencies or go on exile,” he said.

“We have different groups of bandits in the area, but if you pay a levy to this group how sure are you the other group will not attack you?”

“The same scenario unfolded in Gatawa and Tarah, which were attacked and several of their people abducted by different groups of bandits. Their relatives had to pay ransom to those different groups before their release.

“This is what will continue to happen, if one group places a levy on you and you pay, another group will come to either attack you or demand for levy again and you must pay them or face the consequences,” he said.

Several calls placed to the spokesman for the police in Sokoto, ASP Sanusi Abubakar, and the Commissioner for Security and Carriers Matters, Colonel Garba Moyi (retd), were not answered.

They also did not respond to text messages sent to them.

We should all be busy talking about the release of Nnamdi Kanu.... rev mbaka

The Spiritual Director, Adoration Ministry Enugu Nigeria, AMEN, Rev. Father Ejike Mbaka has stated that only the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, will end the sit-at-home order in the south-east.

The Nation reports in some parts of the south-east for weeks, the sit-at-home order by IPOB witnessed considerable compliance as residents stayed indoors despite repeated declarations by Governors in the region that people should disregard the directive.

The cleric in the now-viral video seen by The Nation during a sermon at Adoration Ground said Kanu must not continue to remain in DSS custody

He said: “For long, nobody has seen him (Kanu) and whether we like it or not, as of today, he is the voice that will open and say something that the entire Igbo youths will say “Amen” to it. We should all be busy talking about the release of Nnamdi Kanu.

“Whether we believe it or not, the sun must rise, it is a matter of time.”

Politics / Bandits Kill 18 In Niger, Kidnap Bauchi Residents by DefHQ: 5:03am On Oct 26, 2021
Bandits have reportedly killed 18 worshippers at Maza-Kuka in Mashegu Local Council of Niger State. The armed men, in the early hours of yesterday, The Guardian gathered, invaded the village in large numbers and attacked the villagers, who were performing their early morning prayers.

It was learnt that the gunmen, who came on motorcycles, went straight into the Mosque and shot sporadically resulting in the death of worshippers.

Secretary to the Niger State government, Ahmed Matane, said over 16 persons were killed in the mosque, while another person was attacked at Kaboji village by the bandits.

ALSO, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has reported ongoing cases of abduction and killings in six local councils of the state by bandits, who also destroy properties.

Mohammed made this known, yesterday at a meeting with council bosses, the deputy governor, Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and some commissioners, at the Government House.

The governor expressed disappointment over alleged “connivance of the terrorists with government officials” to perpetrate evil.

Confirming the incident, yesterday, in Damaturu, the village head, Mai Modu Hassan, disclosed that insurgents engaged the soldiers with a fierce gun battle that lasted for half an hour.

“We were forced, along with our families, to flee into nearby bushes for safety,” he lamented, adding that soldiers asked the residents not to panic, as they repelled the terrorists towards the forest.

Politics / Sit-At-Home: Panic Buying In IMO State Over IPOB's Order by DefHQ: 1:44am On Oct 21, 2021
Prices of items in Owerri, Imo State capital, have gone up astronomically as residents engaged in panic buying ahead of the arraignment of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on 21 October.

Recall that IPOB had said Thursday is the only day should exercise sit-at-home to honour its leader, Kanu, as he is expected in court.

Residents of the Heartland City have continued to engage in panic buying until late evening on Wednesday as families sought to stock their homes out of fear that the order may lead to scarcity of food items.

DAILY POST reporter, who visited some markets on Wednesday evening, learnt that prices of food items like meat, tomato at Akwakuma market, Eke Ukwu Owerri market, a major market in the city, have gone up drastically.

A meat trader, Mr. Anayo Emeana, who confirmed the development, said that cows are very costly now but irrespective of the hike, the people are still buying because their children will not eat food with meat.

A journalist, Nkechi Ojukwu told DAILY POST that the prices of foodstuff have gone up within this period because people are trying to stock their homes with food items ahead of October 21 sit-at-home order by IPOB.

She said, “I’m buying foodstuff for my family, which will serve us until after Monday. The cost of things is so high that by the time you buy one or two things your money is finished,” she lamented.

An onions trader at Eke Ukwu Owerri, Musa Ibrahim, said the rush had caused the cost of food items to go up astronomically in the market.

“I don’t know what will happen on Thursday and people are buying food items to stock their kitchens,” he said.
