TravelLooking Back At Migration In 2018 by deleson(op): 6:43am On Jan 17, 2019
The world witnessed an unprecedented migration pattern in 2018. From Africa to America, Asia to Europe, different patterns and processes revealed the complexities of migration in the modern world.

Asylum seekers and migrants are finding it ever more difficult to reach safer and more prosperous countries in 2018.

For those attempting to reach Europe, North America, and Australia from countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, 2018 has been one of the most difficult years. The recent surge of irregular migration has caused unease in destination countries, leading to a rise in populist parties promising hard-line policies on managing migrants.

In the past year, Italy has banned NGO rescue ships in the Mediterranean. It has given Libya training and patrol vessels to intercept and take migrants back to Libya, which the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) called unsafe. Most recently, they passed the “Salvini decree” that would leave migrants homeless and unprotected.

During a meeting of African and EU ministers in Vienna to discuss migration, the interior ministers of Italy and Austria backed a proposal to process the asylum claims of migrants on ships in the Mediterranean. “Once people have set foot on the continent, you can only remove them with great difficulty and much expense,” Austrian interior minister Herbert Kickl said.

These efforts have seen the lowest number of crossings in the last five years. However, the proportion of people dying is increasing. Over 2,200 people have lost their lives in the Mediterranean this year, making it the most dangerous journey in the world for migrants. Many set off from Libya or Morocco, where conditions have been documented to be extremely poor and unsafe.

But 2018 has also seen positive moments. In some countries with young populations looking to leave, governments are looking for ways to provide greater opportunities for young people. This includes business grants, vocational training and business management training.

The EU is also investing in Africa to further the employability and job prospects. In August 2018, the United Kingdom (UK) signed a GBP 115 million grant to Ethiopia, aimed at creating 100,000 jobs and improving the country’s tax system. Germany said it will be financing a four-year programme to reintegrate refugees with host communities in the East African country. In November 2018, the EU Delegation to The Gambia, said the Jobs, Skills and Finance for Women and Youth Programme (JSF) will create about 3,000 jobs for women and youth in The Gambia.

For those seeking to return home while on their irregular migration journey, international organisations like IOM and UNHCR have helped evacuate, relocate or return migrants and refugees. A UN relocation programme has evacuated hundreds of stranded migrants from Libya to Niger to await relocation.

Lastly, a historic global agreement. At the conference for the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration on 10-11 December 2018 in Marrakesh, 164 of the 193 UN member states agreed to 23 objectives. This included the creation of opportunities for regular migration, the prevention of irregular border crossings and the promotion of ethical labour standards for migrant workers, among other issues.

2018 may have been a tough year for migrants and asylum seekers around the world, but for many economic migrants, steps are also being taken to support them with opportunities back home. And at least 164 countries have come together to create a safer world for migrants.
PoliticsRe: FOI Not Binding On States- Lagos Govt by deleson: 9:02am On Jan 05, 2014
To lay the facts plainly, Lagos state has not signed (enacted) the Freedom of Information Bill. At the last check, it was only a public hearing that was held. The document you have on R2K's website is the presented bill of the act and not the ACT/LAW itself.

On the binding status of a federal act on the federating units, that's much of a controversy amidst legal interpreters.

However, with the current governance/constitutional structure in Nigeria, most federal Laws aren't automatically binding on federating states, rather they will have to domesticate or otherwise.

In order to push for speedy domestication of this act in states, citizens' voice just be loud and continuous. And after the enactment, there should strong engagement, follow up and utilization of the act by called and sundry.

Suffice to state, FoIA is not to the ended to engrossed corruption and malfeasance in Nigeria, However, it will assist the war against corruption.

Hi,

In recent time, the Nigerian VO industry has experienced tremendous success...new perspectives to delivery, modern innovation in production with global marketing skills needed for successful operation in the 21st century.

However, as against some international stand-view that broadcasters(TV/Radio) do not make great VO actor, the Nigerian market seems to be encouraging VO actors either young or old to go into broadcasting.

Do you think this is good enough for an emerging VO industry like Nigeria?

Let's feel you pulse here...

Music/RadioRe: Radio Station by deleson: 3:25pm On Apr 11, 2012
Hi,

Setting-up a radio station in Nigeria especially in the happening states could be profitable.
However, getting the transmission license from NBC is the big thing. For instance, getting a broadcast license in states like Lagos and Abuja is almost impossible except with a strong political influence( not even your money will help). This is due to the fact that Lagos and Abuja's airwaves are already saturated which is almost leading to wave-war, nevertheless you can acquire express license in less developed and radio dominated states.

On the average you need about 200-300million naira to kick-start a standard radio station that can at least compete with other existing ones. Note, the more your investment the better your coverage, delivery and financial returns.

Setting up a radio station anywhere in the world requires working with experienced personnels. More so, qualitative human and mechanical resources are essential.

As a radio practitioner, I've over the years been involved in setting-up and managing major and minor radio stations in and around Nigeria.

Hope this info will assist your curiosity.

PhonesHtc Vs Blackberry by deleson(op): 9:54am On Feb 03, 2012
Have you ever explored any HTC phone as well as BlackBerry? Then which do you think is better off?

Better off in terms of giving you satisfaction and meeting your needs @ any point in time.

To start-up, i've used both brands(HTC/Windows Mobile and Blackberry), and i feel windows mobile is just the bump! Aside the fact it requires much internet capacity to function well which could be killing especially when you don't have wireless internet facility. However i'm of the strong opinion that windows mobile is just the best.

What's your thought?
