The Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP) has petitioned the Inspector General of Police to investigate the alleged forging of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s signature and the seal of the federal republic of Nigeria within seven days.

According to a letter the CNPP sent to Mr. Ogbonnaya Onovo through its lawyer, Femi Falana, the Nigeria Police have until Monday next week to commence the probe or they (the CNPP) will take the matter to the Federal High Court to force the police to carry out “its statutory duty”.

The group is claiming that the president’s signature and the seal of the federal republic of Nigeria used in the authentication of the 2009 supplementary budget were forged.

In the petition, the coalition of opposition parties said that following last week’s announcement by government officials that Mr. Yar’adua had signed the 2009 Supplementary Appropriation Bill on his sick bed at the King Faisal Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, it took steps to verify the claim.

“To our utter dismay we have confirmed that the signature of the President and the Seal of the Federal Republic of Nigeria were forged by some persons in the Presidency,” the petition read in part.

The petition told Mr. Onovo that “it has also been reported by some media organizations that the alleged signing of the 2009 supplementary budget by the president is untrue.

“You will no doubt agree with us that if this particular allegation of the forgery of the signature of the President and the seal of the Government of the Federation is not unraveled the perpetrators may be encouraged to engage in the fraudulent manipulation of other vital documents with dire consequences on the integrity of governance and national security of the country,” the CNPP wrote.

The petition urged Mr. Onovo to “use your good office to set the engine in motion for the investigation and prosecution of those who carried out the nefarious act.”
