Lagos which was once known as Eko ceased from being a Yoruba land in 1861.
The name Lagos was given to the land by the Portuguese in the 15th century and it means lakes,or lagoons the name seemed fit for the place because Lagos is surrounded by water.

When the British came to Lagos in the 1800s there was some problems in the land one of which was that the ruler then,Oba Oluwole had died and his vacant throne was battled for by two powerful men,akintoye and kosoko.

Akintoye won this battle and became the Oba of Lagos but after a short time he was overthrowned by Kosoko, akintoye went into exile in badagry where he met British missionaries who were new in the land,he told them his story and pleaded for assistance from them so they called on the British consul,Beecroft to help akintoye with the British military to take back his throne.

Beecroft invaded Lagos with the British navy and subdued the land forcing Oba Kosoko to run away into exile, stating reasons that the Lagos King was still participating in the abolished slave trade.

When they defeated Oba Kosoko, they reinstalled Akintoye as the new Oba and signed a treaty with him to allow them (the British) to be free and protected in the land as they went about their buisness.

Oba Akintoye unlike Oba Kosoko was weak and agreeable to the British and this made them so powerful in Lagos.

In 1853,Oba Akintoye died and the British installed his son Dosunmu as the new Oba.

Oba Dosunmu was as weak as his father Akintoye and wasn't able to completely stop slave trade among the people and so many problems erupted in the land which he couldn't control,the British realized that he was too weak and when they Heard that the french had made contact with the Oba of Lagos they decided to take over Lagos out of fear of the french.

Then,they made Oba Dosunmu to sign a treaty that Britain now owned Lagos and the British crown be recognized as the supreme one in Lagos displacing the Obas crown.

Dosunmu signed the treaty in 1861 and from then onwards Lagos became a colony of Britain and ceased to be Yoruba land but a British land.

Before the British left in 1960, so many Nigerians had migrated to Lagos from other states that Yoruba couldn't even be understood by all lagosians anymore.

There were too many Igbos, Hausa,and calabars living in Lagos and doing buisness freely that the Yorubas lost dominance over Lagos and the issue has worsened for them since then till this day.

A walk in any street of Lagos today lets you know that it's now a multicultural state and not more a Yoruba land anymore.

They've lost so much power and are still losing power over the land that all have realized that they can't regain the land anymore and that is why we call it no man's land today.

Because no tribe owns it anymore.

The West may have been an area with very little population, and probably produced or sent noting to the federal government. Maybe the 500 they were giving them is just to sustain them. We all knew that most of the resources came from the East and North, the West was just used as an export route to the sea, if not, there wouldn't have been rail tracks passing through the whole region.

The current federal sharing formula which aims to seize resources like gas and oil from the east and south to feed the West and north is favoring the west mainly. Notice how the west panicks each time the east or north talks about secession, they know that as soon as Nigeria end, the west will return to Benin Republic or Burkina Faso levels.

In colonial era, all regions contributed more than 10% of their earnings to the colonial government and they in redistribute them according to the needs. Known landmass of South East Nigeria on Wikipedia and other sources has always been 29,525 Km2.

But recently the sum total of the 5 states landmass has been raised to 36,100 Km2. What could be the reason for this? See figures below.

Enugu+Abia+Ebonyi+Imo+Anambra=7161+6320+5670+5530+4844=29,525 Km2 but 36,100 Km2 is now showing on Wikipedia South East page.

Giving that state police will be a force multiplier to the few federal police personnel, it will also engender home grown solutions to local problems best understood and handled by indigenous of a locality.

However, the fear of abuse and state capture of such security institutions to oppression political opponents is sacrosanct.

The federating units must bring out a near perfect blueprint to govern the control of such organ to prevent abuse.

The fear of abuse is where you have the federal courts and the supreme court in the first place. If a state is using its police for anything other than justice, people can take the police to the higher courts just like any other institutions. But Nigeria just like to copy other systems without looking at its own local situation
