One thing you have to realise is that not everyone that work in the Military are sent to war. For example, he can work for DoD as an administrator or in other capacities, the benefit of this is that he automatically gets security clearance which would eventually open more doors for him in future.

and if you don't don't know what you are doing, you'll mess up your Master Boot Records or later download Windows update KB971033 and you are back to square one.
