A prosecution witness on Wednesday told the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission that Doyin Okupe, Senior Special Assistant on Media to former President Goodluck Jonathan collected N702 million from government’s treasury “for doing nothing”.

The witness, Osas Azonabor, was speaking at an Abuja Division of the Federal High Court where Okupe is facing trial on 59 counts for allegedly diverting the said amount.

According to a statement by the commission, Azonabor said the defendant allegedly received the sum in different tranches between 2012 and 2014.

According to the statement, Azonabor told the court that the commission began investigating the former media aide after it was tipped off about the alleged fraud in 2016.

“Azonabor told the court that the EFCC wrote to the ONSA, demanding the vouchers of the payments made to Okupe.

“According to him, after analysing the payment vouchers, it was realised that cash payment of N50 million, was made into Okupe’s account, as stated in the voucher of April 8, 2014.

“He also stated that another cash payment of N6 million was found to have been made to Okupe on April 2, 2014. He explained that there were series of payment in multiples of N10 million that was made to Okupe between 2012 to 2014.”

The witness gave the testimony while answering questions from a lawyer, Ibrahim Audu who also works for the EFCC.

The witness further told the court that EFCC’s investigation found the sum of N50 million paid into Zenith Bank account of Value Trust Investment Limited, which Okupe is a director.

He said another N35 million was paid into the account of Abraham Telecoms Nig Limited, in which Okupe is a signatory.

“He told us he was the Senior Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan from 2012 and was placed on a monthly salary of N835, 000, paid to him by the SGF,” Azonabor said.

“Okupe said he was paid N10 million monthly for 24 months by ONSA and that the money was reduced to N5 million monthly from January 2015 to May 2015.

“Okupe said the money was for special services and when asked to elaborate what he meant by ‘special services’, Okupe said part of the money was used to sponsor ‘Insight’, a programme on NTA”.

In the course of the investigation, Okupe reportedly submitted a budget proposal by NTA to EFCC, the statement said.

It, however, added that a letter was written to the TV station to confirm the authenticity of the document that emanated from NTA.

In response to that letter, the NTA agreed that the document came from them but added that the said programme was aired free of charge, in line with the television’s regulations for addressing its corporate social responsibility.

The witness further informed the court that Okupe claimed that part of the money collected from ONSA was used to pay workers, but when asked to show proof of payment he only brought a list of names on a written piece of paper and also a typed paper.

“There was no payment voucher, receipt or pay slip to show evidence of payment and when we asked him to produce staff he paid to, he couldn’t produce any,” Azonabor said.

“However, Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) documents of the Value Trust Investment Ltd and Abraham Telecoms Nig Ltd, and a letter of response from ONSA to the EFCC Acting Chairman and statements of the defendants were all admitted in evidence,” the statement said.

The case has been adjourned till Thursday for cross-examination.

Okupe, among others, is facing trial for alleged diversion of funds from the Office of the former NSA.

Igbo man control his mind and does not wait for another person to make decision for him, therefore when he is in your domain and you expect him to do your bidding and he refuses what happens, name calling will set in. Hatred Igbos are facing today is as a result of their doggedness to uphold that which they believe in. You can't blackmail them to yield to your antics. One Of your kind was all over this forum the other time praying for fight to start in Lagos so that he can go and vandalize the shop of his fellow man. DSTV is ripping us off, go to factories in Lagos and see how Lebanese and Indians are treating your daughters but you can't do anything because you consider them super humans. You will rather chose to fight your fellow citizen that did nothing to you. What you considered anti-Social activities is what average igbo man consider opportunity. He owe you no apology for doing business in his country. A typical African is Lazy, no wonder Trump says that Africans are only good in sex. So when they see their fellow African doing their legal business to make money, they call it anti-social activities. Igbos travel far and wide, go to a war torn country today you find Igbos. Ndigbo in Akure eats humble pie, begs Deji over misconduct of Eze

The leadership of the Igbo community in Akure, Ondo State, on Friday swallowed its pride and begged for pardon from the Deji of Akure, Aladetoyinbo Adelusi, following two weeks of hostilities between the Igbo community and the palace.

The Deji had vowed to obliterate the position of the Eze Ndigbo of Akure, after the title holder, Gregory Iloehika, allegedly insulted the traditional ruler.

Mr. Iloehika, was accused of rude behaviour at the Deji’s palace, an action which angered the Chiefs and resulted in a war of wits between the palace chiefs and Igbo traders.

The crisis had started two weeks ago with the leadership tussle between Igbos and Yorubas at the Mojere Market in Akure, but became widespread after the interventionfrom the Deji’s palace were resisted by the Igbo traders.

Mr. Iloehika was said to have made uncomplimentary remarks against the Deji in Council, and was immediately walked out of the palace by the Chiefs.

Viewing the action as an insult to the traditional stool, the Deji ordered the closure of the shops of the Igbo traders as well as the business premises of Mr. Iloehika along Cathedral Road in the heart of the city.

His position as Eze Ndigbo was also nullified, with a declaration that he should no longer parade himself as the leader of the Igbo community in Akure.

The Igbo community also responded by closing their shops in strategic markets in solidarity with their leader, causing some hardship in the town.

The spare parts markets were almost grounded and vehicles owners and mechanics had problems getting parts for vehicles needing repairs.

The intervention of the Ondo State Government to resolve the matter culminated in Friday’s peace meeting between the palace and the Igbo community.

Led by the President of the Ohaeneze Ndigbo, Ondo State, Okechukwu Okorie, the Chief of Staff to the state governor, Kola Ademujimi, Mr. Oloehika and other members of the Igbo community prostrated before the monarch, seeking his forgiveness.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, one Mr, Anoliefo said the Igbo people had found Akure a hospitable place in the last 100 years.

He urged the Deji to forgive their errors, promising that such action would not repeat itself in the future.

Also speaking, Mr. Ademujimi appealed to the Deji, Oba to forgive all the wrongdoings of his Igbo brothers, saying there would be no meaningful development in an atmosphere of rancour.

Responding, Oba Aladetoyinbo said he had pardoned the offenders, promising that their shops at the markets would be opened on Saturday.

Oba Aladetoyinbo thanked Governor Mimiko for his intervention as well as Akure youths for their peaceful disposition all through the crisis.

He however said the position of the disputed Eze Ndigbo would be considered at the council of Obas which would hold next week.

Have you ask your self why Igbos still remain in the north despite all the hostility toward them in the north. It's their resilience spirit. Burn there market and shops today and see them bring up tomorrow in another bush doing wonders. The more you kill them, the more they come. That is why they are successful in everything they do. An igbo man owe you no apology for being successful. And he can't be graceful to a non entity like you because you didn't give him your land for free. The day he bought your land or your shop he didn't put a gun on your head. Beside they are your fellow citizen and are free to live place of their choice so are you. It's not easy for someone to come to your house and give you what you don't have without asking for anything in return. Today the world has moved above ethnic sentiments and bigotry, that is why advance countries like Canada and Germany are begging foreigners to come to their country to work and do business to help grow their economy. But here in Nigeria one lazy group of people (My apologies to hard working Yorubas) are shouting for their fellow citizen to leave the slump they call city but will cry blue murder when trump told their relatives in America to go back to their country. My brother go get busy and be successful and you will never see Igbos as a threat again. My busy Yoruba friends have no time to ask is he Igbo or Yoruba when doing business. They key world is let make money. Hate kills faster then cancer
Because they have no choice but to stay and risk death since returning home to the poor and economically unproductive and unviable land in the East is not an option.

Why they stay or not is not what I asked you, the question was Why are the host communities where you people migrate to are always unhappy with you ...that they even threaten you with death and destruction? WHY?

Explain to us why Nigerians outside your borders are always against your presence, your ways and social conducts?

Based on your judgement, Chinese and Indians in Nigeria are foolish for Living their country to settle down in a place like Nigeria. There are a lot of successful Igbo men whom their business revolve around the east. For instance the only car assembling plant in Nigeria is in the east. The only shoe and other material production factory that serve this country is in the east. That Chinese are coming to Nigeria to do business doesn't mean that their country is not Economical viable. Take Lagos away from your region every thing will crumble immediately. Show me another state in the south west that would compete with any other city in the east. You need to travel out of your home to have a broader view of life. As it is right now, your mind set is too narrow. Your pain is that while you fail in your land, another man came and succeed but that is not the way to go about it. Humble yourself and learn from them. Learn to do those things which they do to succeed that you have not don before. Once you are busy and successful with what you are doing this hatred will disappear from your heart. My ever busy Yoruba friends have no time for hate. They are busy to notice someone who who is not a threat to their work.
Vey pointless and illogical example.

Chinese and Indian people in Nigeria are not terrible and anti-social guests working against my interests, they are not obnoxious, annoying or even blessed with any kind of voting privileges to use against me and my existence.

Last time I checked, Northerners are not issuing out quit notices or face death and destruction to Indian and Chinese people in the North, it was against the usual anti-social and anti hosts people from the SE

Do some soul searching per why Nigerians outside your borders share such sentiments against you.

Btw, there are more people from the East in Ogun, Oyo, Ekiti, Osun and Ondo state than Lagos so of what relevance is the talk about other places in the SW cannot compete with the East? If the East is so much better and economically viable than Ogun, Ekiti, Oyo, Osun and Ondo state, they what are you doing there? Why leave your so-called better and more productive states in the East to suffer and do menial and migrant labor in poor and less good places in the SW? You see how shallow and illogical you people sound sometimes with that lame chest beating argument

You still sound threatened by the present of Igbos in your land. There is a popular saying that says that one doesn't feel threatened in his fathers house. I see no reason why a hard working Yoruba man will be threatened by the present of ever busy Igbo man in his land. No doubt, Lagos is a Yoruba land but same time its is also part of Nigeria and Igbos are Nigerians. Therefore, you can't stop them from moving around in their country. Being a citizen of Nigeria give them the right to reside to any part of Nigeria without owing you apology. It is never on record that Igbos forcefully displaced their host their possession.

As for bigotry, it cut across every ethnic group in Nigeria. If it is not ethnic bigotry, it will be religious one. Up north they are fighting themselves, same in the east and the west is not left out. You haven't seen a Yoruba man castigating his fellow Yoruba man before?. Ijebus are the most hated tribe within the Yoruba land. On the other side the only bigotry Igbo man has shown in Yoruba land is to be successful in what he is doing and at same time being proud of his accomplishment. Have never heard that Igbos are discriminating against Yorubas in Lagos. The two ethnic group has been living peacefully until the selfish politicians came to divide both along their ethnic lines. This crisis is always high during election period.

There are Mega cities in the east, you have to travel round the country before making assumptions. The biggest market in the west Africa is in the east but the truth is that the east is highly competitive. Those that can't make it at home travel out of the region to explore the available opportunities in the target areas. Having a mega city in your domain doesn't guarantee success. If it is like that, Chinese won't abandon their world class cities for a place like Nigeria. You claim to live outside Yoruba land, why did you left your mega city for other region?. My brother get busy and be successful and you will see all these bitterness will disapear.
Feeling threatened by ungracious and anti-social elements and guests in one's house is pretty much natural and something one must pay attention to especially when their interests, belief system, goals and objectives are against mine.

You people are just lucky that Yoruba people play too nice, unlike the North where they issue you quit notice and exit from their land or death.

Insecurity is one thing i noticed in mind of every yoruba man that has been shouting igbos this igbos that. What are you afraid of. Go out of your comfort zone and experience the world in general, out of fear you say no. While in that your comfort zone which is your papa house you are still shouting like a kid who just had a nightmare. Igbos are never a threat to anyone. Their only is crime is that they succeed in every environment they find themselves. If i may ask what boundaries are you talking about, aren't igbos Nigerians anymore?. Please is it a crime for igbos who are Nigerians to exercise their constitutional right in Nigeria?.
Why leave your comfort zone when it's comfortable and productive enough for you to stay in for the rest of your life?

You people live the comfort of your home in the East because it's not comfortable, it's economically hostile and unproductive hence generation after generation of your people must leave and venture into other parts of Nigeria for your daily bread.

Nigerians are not and cannot troop into your towns and villages in the East because there's nothing there for them economically and even socially, even you can not wait to gather bus money and run out of that uncomfortable environment.

All over Nigeria, you people are horrible, annoying, loud, antagonistic and unhelpful guests,. You are always on the wrong side of your hosts, you are always against their interests, progress, and development.

And this is not just about Lagos, you people exhibit the same anti host attitude all over Nigeria at the expense of your gracious hosts, it gets so bad that some hosts asked you to leave their land or be killed.

You people need to do some soul searching just to figure out why Nigerians outside your borders cannot stand you and what you stand for.

Personally, I think your votes and presence should be curtailed and diluted since your interests are always against the host's interests, hopes, and future.

There are other ethnic groups in Nigeria and in Lagos in particular, but must it be just you people annoying, antagonizing and disrupting communities all over Nigeria with your anti-social issues
