Hong kong has autonomous status for a period of time and China signed in on that agreement. It would have been best for them to patiently wait for the duration to expire before taking over Hong kong as agreed.

If care is not taken those people will start clamouring for total independence from China, that's what Britain actually wants. China does not want to lose HK to Britain.
