Nairaland / General / Re: Solar Eclipse To Occur On Sunday....nigerians Shld Nt Panic by DeSheikh(m): 8:52pm On Oct 30, 2013 |
Nigeria may likely witness partial solar eclipse on Sunday, the National Space Research and Development Agency, NSRDA, has said. The Director General of the Agency, Dr. Seidu Mohammed who made this known in a statement urged the public not to panic over the course of the eclipse. He assured that it will not affect signal from the stationary satellites which means that mobile communication will continue to work. Mohammed said the eclipse will be seen in most parts of the country and in some West African countries. He added that Nigerians should continue with their normal businesses, but said people should use their sun glasses because of partial rays. http://dailypost.com.ng/2013/10/29/nigeria-may-witness-partial-solar-eclipse-on-sunday-nsrda/ |

Mubby4luv: LOL. Atafa maka mutumina, ka gama dasu. ai sai hausa wallahi. banda fari da ja da baki, basu da sunan suran launonin. Meaning: Standing Ovation man! You've beaten them all! No doubt Hausa is the only language that's got it all. Aside white, red and black, most other tribes don't have local names for other colours and I speak a couple of Nigerian languages apart from my mother tongue (Hausa). |
Nairaland / General / Will A Power Transformer Solve My Domestic Power Problem? Pls Advise. by DeSheikh(m): 8:21am On Sep 16, 2013 |
I am contemplating buying a transformer for my house. I am not sure which type yet but I want to be sure it will solve my power problems first. So what is the problem? I moved into my house (my personal house) only to discover that the power voltage in my new neighbourhood is very low. It can only power energy-saving light bulbs and tv. The fans turn so slowly that it is almost like there is no fan. Cant iron my cloth or pump water with the booster. The fridge, ac, microwave, water heaters and washing machine are just decorating the house. Well, as you may have guessed, the load on the neighbourhood transformer is the cause of the poor voltage. I was told that to solve the problem, we needed another transformer. Unfortunately, I have been unable to get the cooperation of my neighbours to deal with this. I have installed a solar power system (which gives me fans, lights and tv every night) and I use my gen to power the booster whenever we need water but all the other appliances cannot be powered by these options. So, I am contemplating getting a small transformer that can get the voltage up for all my domestic needs. But I need advise from experts in the house. Basically, the questions I need answers to are; 1. Will the transformer solve my problem? 2. Is this a good idea? 3. What kind of transformer should I buy? 4. Hiw much will that cost? 5. Is there an alternative solution? Any other other useful comment is welcome. Thanks. |
Politics / Re: Procter & Gamble To Build $250M Plant In Ogun State by DeSheikh(m): 2:56pm On Aug 08, 2013 |
this is stale news. the P&G plant is almost nearing completion. Ground breaking was done since 2012. and FYI, P&G has been in Nigeria since 1992. First Plant is in Oluyole, Ibadan (where Pampers, Always,Ariel and Vicks are produced). Another Plant in Lagos produces the current No. 1 antiseptic soap in the world (SAFEGUARD) which is already catching up with the market leader (Dettol). P&G is a truly multinational company and currently employs hundreds of Nigerians (paying one of the highly competitive salaries in the industry). The Agbarra plant is a move to meet the ever growing demand for P&G's life improving brands whose demand far outweighs the production capacity of the existing manufacturing plants. and FYI, I speak from an insider point of view (just in case you were wondering). |

van Kossy : Gratia: Na wa o! What is d beef about? I'm guessing it's because you didn't make a first class. I'm truly sorry about that. Just know that taking it out on me won't change your condition. And by the way, Van Kossy, I went to a prestigious Fed University where you can't bribe lecturers (read between the lines). It is clear from your outburst that you graduated without character and little learning (your strong 2.1 regardless). Gratia, yes I'm not the only 1st class graduate but as I stated in my earlier response to you, comprehension is your weakness. Now, for the benefit of other likeminds as those quoted above, if you read my post carefully, my point is that lecturers are not paid well enough and as such, people with good degrees who should stay back to teach, most often than not, don't. My reference to 2'2s and below is to buttress how unfair the system is to teachers. It was not meant to belittle or look down on people with those classes of degrees. I rest my case. 22 Likes 1 Share |

Gratia: My dear, there is a reason why we learn comprehension in school. I advise you read my post carefully again (maybe 3 times), then ask yourself honestly, if your comment is appropriate and fair. 6 Likes 1 Share |

nagoma: Anya?? Nagoma ka tabbata kuwa? ni dai na san agwaluma muke kiransa a Kano. We call it Agwaluma in Hausa (at least in Kano). I believe it is borrowed from the Yoruba name for the fruit as we do not grow it locally. it is common knowledge that when a an ethnic group hasn't got something locally, their name for it is usually a corruption of the name it is called where they source it from. e.g. bicycle in Hausa = Keke (yoruba origin), Bucket (bokiti - Ebglish), etc |

Politics / Re: Artillery Fire, Sporadic Gunshot At Naibawa & Darmunawa In Kano by DeSheikh(m): 1:25pm On Jun 15, 2012 |
Jakumo: It is unlikely that artillery is being used within a Nigerian town, even though that is happening daily in Syria, where a civil war has commenced.yes u r right. the recent danbare attack was very close to my house and men!!! the noise was deafening!!!! i believe they are using RPGs. worm: Wow! unbelievable. I am in Kano right now but i only know about this "breaking news" on nairaland. Sporadic gunshots (may be) because JTF usually raid the suspects houses in the night, but 'Artillery Fire' in Kano? NO. I'm in Kano too. my wife (she left the house before me) called a while ago to alert me of the development. but we are still awaiting details. |

most of the responses given are correct or close. I graduated 1st class and was retained. the salary plus allowances added up to about 70k (that was in 2008). i left for a multinational which offered 3x for a start plus lots of perks. though it is painful to see students at home, i now fully understand and support lecturers strikes. it's unfair for one to have studied hard and graduated well and be paid pea nuts to teach when the lay abouts and half seriuos students who graduated with 3rd class, pass and 2'2s are cruising in banks and big companies through connections. though in the long run, lecturing will pay off and guarantees a better retirement (but like someone stated, u have to acquire higher degrees and write alot) i am of the school of thought that lecturers are highly underpaid. 1 Like 1 Share |

We are in trouble in this country. Why?? because of the great poverty of common sense and conscience as displayed consistently by the overwhelming number of people I used to term as the "hope of Nigeria" i.e. those I perceived (Not anymore) as enlightened. Every man for himself. Allah Ya Kyauta. |

Politics / Re: A Muslim Who Risk All To Save His Xtian Neighbours by DeSheikh(m): 11:57pm On Apr 24, 2011 |
Cyborg2011:I believe u. my sister and her family narrowly escaped from Narayi Highcost. My secretary (a xtian) recounted to me in vivid details how many of her muslim neighbours (most of them non-hausas) were murdered plus the hausa maiguards and gatemen by the southern Kaduna xtians. She said she was shocked to see fellow xtians murdering muslims (she had just moved there with her family about a year ago because they weren't feeling safe in Northern Kaduna). The instances are too numerous to mention. The truth is that the media never mentions it when it is the muslims that are the victims. It's the same thing in Jos. This by no means justifies the actions of our murderous kin. Like someone rightly pointed out, these guys are the area boys of the north. Most enlightened Hausa-fulanis and Muslims do not take part in or support violence. The problem however, is that they hardly speak up against it or strive to prevent it. We need to unite with one voice against violence to prevent it, and to nip it in the bud if it occurs. We must also preach the true peaceful Islam (not the misinterpreted one as presented by one of the posters above, which unfortunately, is the version largely taught to our youths today). Allah says in the Qur'an; "Whoever kills a person, it would be as though he killed all mankind; and whoever saves a life, it would be as though he saved all mankind." Mr. Bologi, may Peace be your lot here & in the next life. |

Politics / Re: Would The South Be Peaceful If Jonathan Was Rigged Out by DeSheikh(m): 8:13pm On Apr 22, 2011 |
@poster; I think this post is unwarranted. In as much as I get ur point, methinks it is better to come up with constructive ideas on how to prevent future violence of the sort we have witnessed in the past few days. I am a native of Kano (I am currently on vacation at home) and I witnessed the riot firsthand. IMO, nothing justifies the carnage even though it was initially targeted at the bigshots who are perceived by the perpetrators of the violence as the betrayers of the north. If it had stopped at that & had some of the rioters not attacked non-muslims, non-hausas & other ordinary people (even some CPC/Buhari supporters who are also Hausa-Muslims were affected simply because they were well-to-do), I would have been satisfied for 1 reason. What's my reason? The leaders of the north are largely responsible for the breeding of those cankerworms that carry out killings and riots by their selfishness; only guarding their filial & political interests and turning a blind-eye to the massive poverty, illiteracy, backwardness and so many other ills in the north. I only pray that our northern elites (having seen the danger face-to-face) will now awaken to the task of uplifting the masses from ignorance & poverty by representing them well rather than amassing wealth for themselves alone. if not, I'm afraid in the nearest future, non of them will be able to live peacefully in the north. |
Politics / Re: At Times I Feel Ashamed As A Hausa Man by DeSheikh(m): 9:36pm On Apr 18, 2011 |
@poster I used to feel the same way until my enlightenment as a muslim got to the point where I only see people as people. I am me. I did not choose my ethnicity, or even my family for that matter. All humans are capable of good and/or evil. That said, I feel angered by the senseless violence and condemn it in strong words. The painful part is that a good number of these miscreants did not even vote and they have the guts to blame others for what, if you ask me, they brought upon us ( the true supporters of Buhari). I commited my resources to the BB cause and even had to drive all the way from Kano (on Friday), stayed in a hotel close to where I registered, in order to vote for Buhari on Saturday in Kaduna (my company transfered me from Kaduna shortly after I registered). I then drove back in the evening to Kano only to have my family trapped in the middle of the riot this morning. Thank God I was able to drive through the thick of it all to get them back home before soldiers were deployed to quell the uprising. My friend, it is people like you & I who can change this unbecoming attitude of our people. start with your immediate family and close associates and we can move from there. Don't be ashamed. you are you. Shun the stereotypes and live your life free. Allah Ya taimake mu. |

Apologies for bringing this up here but I need help. Is it possible to remove or block any advert I find offensive while enjoying my Nairaland? I make this inquiry because of the NAIRA PARTY advert with the naked lady showing her butt. I personally find it disgusting (no offence to the owner or those who like it). I'll appreciate any tip on blocking it and if there's none, I guess I may have to stop visiting Nairaland. |

Beaf!: Correction In this part of the country, you can not really tell the religion by the name because many northern christians bear muslim-sounding names which are actually tribal or Hausa names e.g. Damtala Babawo; this person is most likely non-Hausa/Fulani and definitely not a muslim. Righton: Thanks righton for the clarification. I was going to do it myself. LoveKing: Yes, the Muslims will and have even done the same in numerous uprisings in Northern Nigeria; at least my family has, putting us at great risk. I have had a dagger aimed at me before someone else blocked it because I was helping to move belongings of christian neighbours (some of whom we and other muslim neighbours had hidden while others had fled) to our house because they were going to burn the house (Funny enough, the house belonged to a muslim, most of the tenants were christians). The fact is, nobody who is truly a Muslim, Christian or any other true, practicing believer will partake in killing others for their faith, or even encourage violence of any sort. When the Irish protestants and catholics were murdering one another, we all agreed they weren't representing xtianity . |
Romance / Re: I Am Doing Something Abominable And I Know But I Need Help by DeSheikh(m): 10:02pm On Jan 20, 2011 |
If this is true (I'm more inclined not to believe this story), no one can help you but you. Whether u leave the house or not will do little or nothing to change your situation. You are Satan's prey and only you can fight this war. As already advised in some responses, start a special fasting and prayer retreat in a church or mosque to seek God's help in this battle. You need to be determined to stop. So far, you've not demonstrated the determination to win this war. Yes, it is a spiritual war from Satan and his dark forces to not only destroy your life but the lives of your close ones as well. You can win this war only if you are ready to. I hope I've helped (not so sure ) well May God help you. |
